~Roy Douglas Malonson, Publisher~
The recent attack at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina that resulted in the death of nine African-American parishioners --- Rev. Clementa Pinckney, Tywanza Sanders, Cynthia Hurd, Rev. Sharonda ColemanSingleton, Myra Thompson, Ethel Lance, Rev. Daniel Simmons, Rev. DePayne Middleton-Doctor and Susie Jackson --- has caused many to reflect upon the type of nation America has become. Even President Barack Hussein Obama, who personally knew Emanuel Pastor Rev. Clementa Pinckney, has taken to the airwaves to offering biting commentary condemning “the senseless murders.” The President who lamented that he had to “make statements like this too many times” continued his commentary by remarking that “any death of this sort is a tragedy. Any shooting involving multiple victims is a tragedy… There is something particularly heartbreaking about death happening in a place in which we seek solace and we seek peace.” As is too often the occasion, the shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church became the latest issue for opposing political viewpoints to debate. President Obama issued one of the earliest national salvo’s in the storied battle for gun-control by relating that “We do know that once again, innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun…At some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this kind of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. It doesn’t happen in other places with this kind of frequency. It is in our power to do something about it.” Predictably, those who disagree with the President, like Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, took to the airwaves to denounce Obama’s position by retorting, “What kind of person goes in a church and shoots nine people? There’s a sickness in our country. There’s something terribly wrong, but it isn’t going to be fixed by your government…” TO CONTINUE READING ‘CHURCHES’ SEE PG. 4
