AUSTIN - A mobile station issuing Election Identification Certificates (EICs) will be at Huston-Tillotson University in the Davage-Durden Student Union Building on Wednesday, October 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The student union building is located at 900 Chicon Street, Austin, TX 78702. Election Identification Certificates are available without charge to qualified Texas voters who do not already have an approved form of photo ID, which is now required for voting in person. Many Texans already have an approved form of ID and will not need or qualify for an EIC. Acceptable forms of ID in addition to an EIC are: Texas driver license issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS), Texas personal identification card issued by DPS, Texas concealed handgun license issued by DPS. United States military identification card containing the person’s photograph, United States citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph, United States passport Applicants for an EIC will need to present proof of citizenship and identity. For most applicants that means a birth certificate and two forms of supporting documentation.

DALLAS - Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, announced that MHMR of Tarrant County has received a $1 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to implement their System of Care program for transition age youth called, “Paving the Way: Successful Transitions to Adulthood.” MHMR of Tarrant County provides vital assistance and counseling services to persons with mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, addictive behaviors and early childhood developmental delays. MHMRTC is the second largest in a network of community mental health centers in the state, serving 24 counties in North Texas.

HOUSTON - The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is excited to announce the launch of season two of Moms In Training (MIT), a stroller-friendly training and fundraising program in the Houston-area, to benefit blood cancer research and patient services.

MIT is a modified version of LLS’s famous Team In Training (TNT) program that is designed to provide a more accessible outlet for busy moms to take a passionate stand against cancer. MIT was founded in the New York City Chapter of LLS. In its inaugural year, more than 200 MIT team members in the New York City area raised more than $375,000 for LLS. Each mom makes a commitment to raise at least $500 and the average mom involved with the program has raised an amazing $1500! The Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of LLS launched this exciting new program in Spring 2014 when 25 moms got together and raised nearly $18,000 for LLS. MIT provides moms with a coach and team to train with, fundraising support throughout the program, and gives moms an avenue to improve their own fitness level while making a real impact on the lives of those with blood cancer. The second season will begin training on Saturday, October 25 at two different locations (Terry Hershey Park, and Alexander Deussen Park). We will be training to complete the Jingle Bell Run on Sunday, December 14, 2014. SAN ANTONIO - While Ebola gets all the headlines, more Texas parents are worried about the so called ‘Enterovirus,’ which has killed at least one child and sickened hundreds in 46 states, including Texas. Dr. Luis Castagnini with Children’s Hospital of San Antonio says Enterovirus, technically EVD68, is nothing new in the United States. The Enterovirus is one of dozens of ‘non polio single strand viruses’ which cause several types of diseases, mainly in children, and generally in children who have some underlying health condition.

In the tradition of the biblical prophets who so influenced him, he conscientiously eschewed political partisanship and instead maintained an uncompromising stance of principled nonalignment. To this he made just one exception. Because he saw the right-wing policies espoused by the 1964 Republican presidential candidate, Barry Goldwater, as a dangerous threat to the fabric of American society, King put aside his principled nonpartisanship and vigorously campaigned against the Republican nominee, declaring that it was “disastrous that the Republican

Party nominated Barry Goldwater as its candidate for President of the United States.” He lamented: The prospect of Senator Goldwater being President of the United States so threatened the health, morality, and survival of our nation, that I could not in good conscience fail to take a stand against what he represented.

Looking back on Goldwater’s landslide loss several years later, King explained why he believed Goldwater was such a threat: Extremist racial politics: The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism. All people of goodwill viewed with alarm and concern the frenzied wedding ... of the KKK with the radical right. ... While not himself a racist, Mr. Goldwater articulated a philosophy which gave aid and comfort to the racist. His candidacy and philosophy would serve as an umbrella under which extremists of all stripes would stand.

Bellicose approach to foreign policy: Mr. Goldwater advocated a narrow nationalism, a crippling isolationism, and a trigger-happy attitude that could plunge the whole world into the dark abyss of annihilation.

Economic elitism and a stated intent to unravel the social safety net: On social and economic issues, Mr. Goldwater represented an unrealistic conservatism that was totally out of touch with the realities of the twentieth century. Mr. Goldwater had neither the concern nor the comprehension necessary to grapple with this problem of poverty in the fashion that the historical moment dictated.

King concluded: In the light of these facts and because of my love for America, I had no alternative but to urge every ... person of goodwill to vote against Mr. Goldwater and to withdraw support from any Republican candidate that did not publicly disassociate himself from Senator Goldwater and his philosophy.

“Why did ‘Bro’ Die???”

nyone who knows or has been associated with me either knows or perceives this one thing; and that is that I have absolutely have no problem with speaking or writing what’s on my mind. I have not just gotten that way, I have been that way for years. As a matter of fact, me and my wife are both two of the same. For years, pastors, educators, politicians and other leaders have repeatedly came to us through the doors of African-American News&Issues with problems, issues, concerns and all manner of stuff that they wanted to say or to relay to the public, but were too afraid to do so.

So being the grass root community newspaper that we have been since 1996, we have voiced those issues and done so time and time again. Without fear or favor we have held true to addressing current and historical realities affecting our communities. I make no apologies for it and I will tell anyone!

I stated all that to pose this one simple question to the faithful audience of African-American News&Issues, “Why Did Bro Die?” Yup, that’s what I stated and that’s what I meant; why did the Brother have to die? For those of you who may not be too involved with the media and breaking news going on within the US. There has been total chaos regarding the recent Ebola disease making its way onto American soil.

Just last month a man from Liberia by the name of Thomas Eric Duncan, who according to reports was in his early 40’s was diagnosed with a severe case of Ebola.

It is believed that he contacted the disease in Liberia where he played the role of a “Good Samaritan”; by helping his landlord’s daughter who was pregnant.

Not being selfish but seeing a

woman in need he took no thought as to whether or not he should help her. After seeing that she could not walk and was severely bleeding from her mouth, he picked her up and carried her inside the house.

Undoubtably, Duncan had no idea that this woman had the Ebola disease; as she died the very next day. Also, several members of her family died not long after she did.

Thomas Eric Duncan, from Liberia dies at the age of 42 after a severe case of Ebola in Dallas.

He was reported to have been the first incident of the Ebola pandemic in the U.S. However, there was a little bit more to the story than that. Duncan landed in Dallas on September 20. He went to the hospital five days later.

According to CNN’s Faith Karimi and Catherine E. Shoichet, “He was treated for a fever, vomiting and abdominal pain -- all symptoms of Ebola. But he was sent home with antibiotics and was not screened for the virus. Relatives say he told hospital staff he’d come from Liberia.”

It was not until September 28 that Duncan returned back to the hospital after his condition had worsened. At that point he was placed in isolation.

Needless to state, this very unfortunate incident led also to Duncan’s ultimate demise on this

We MUST Understand

past Wednesday. People always say that I talk about and stress this “Black” thing too much. And they can continue to say what they want to say and I will do the same.

We MUST Understand that, there is just something about this Blackness that they don’t understand. Not pointing fingers at any one person, facility or agency at all; but I just wonder if Duncan’s skin would have been possibly 100 shades lighter, would this outcome have still been the same? Maybe, maybe not but my question still remains, “Why did Bro die?”

Especially when there are extensive tests and experimentation that have been put in place for this very reason. And there are Ebola patients in America that have been diagnosed with the disease, treated and remain as survivors. Things that make me go… Hmmm.

But at the end of the day, I am going to have to agree with Karimi and Shoichet who denotes several factors associated with the death of Duncan that makes sense as to, “Why Bro died?”.

In those factors they mentioned the following: Duncan wasn’t hospitalized right away, he didn’t get an experimental drug immediately, he got a different experimental drug, he didn’t get a blood transfusion from an Ebola survivor, the hospital treating him had no advance notice (even though he told them that he was from Liberia – but we will roll with that one anyway), information on his case has been muddled and his family believes his insurance status played a role in this situation.

Kenneth Morris

HOUSTON – Born and bred in one of the most historical neighborhoods in the city of Houston is Kenneth Morris. Being the only son of his mother, Morris’ primary education started out in the 5th Ward community. However, he and his family relocated to South Park where he earned his high school diploma at Jesse H. Jones High School.

During an interview Mr. Morris exclaimed, “I did not excel in academics in school and didn't receive one scholarship offer so I knew if I stayed in my neighborhood doing nothing; I increased my chances of being another statistic, imprisoned or deceased like more than half of my friends are at this very moment.” Motivated to succeed, Morris despite all odds, knew that he had to commit to something that would reward him futuristically. It was at that time that he began studying to be tested by the United States military.

Apparently his study style and determination worked because, once tested he scored very highly.

With his impressive scoring level, Morris was presented with six different offers. Amongst them he recalls quite vividly that there was an additional position that was TX- 4

set aside from the other job offers.

His inquisitive nature made him very curious about that certain position. However, his recruiter told him precisely, “I do not know much about this job, they fly on airplanes, look for submarines, swim a lot and 90% of the people that attempt this career fail, so I wouldn't choose this one if I were you.” But being a product of 'The Hood', afforded Morris with undeniable ambition and the tenacity to challenge any task, so he was definitely eager to do that which others opted not to. Immediately he responded to the recruiter and said, “Well, I will take that job then sir.” Which is exactly what he did.

Hence he started on a career path to become an Anti-Submarine Warfare Systems Operator - Acoustic.

Upon graduating, he did not waste any time on his next plateau.

Therefore, he enlisted into the United Stated Navy boot camp.

He was flown to Great Lakes, Illinois and still remembers this first flight experience just like it was yesterday. Although he had to leave his family, Morris did not realize the monstrosity of the challenge he was about to embark upon. However, he declares that he will forever believe that it was the single best decision that he’s made in his life.

For it was in the U.S. Navy that he learned and retained a great deal of morals, ethics and values.

He revealed that he learned to be accountable, gained structure in daily living, built his confidence level and grew into a responsible young man. While in the U.S. Navy he was privileged to travel to more than 30 different countries and international cities. This feat allowed him the exposure to interact, experience and see the lifestyles of numerous cultures; that he may not have otherwise done had not he made this choice.

During his tenure in the U.S. Navy he was promoted the first time every time and made the rank of E-5

in 3 years. This is quite an honor, considering that most individuals usually take five to seven years to accomplish such a task. To date, he has been the recipient of a number of medals and honors including: NATO Medalist, Good Conduct Medalist, Kosovo Air Campaign Medalist, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medalist, Sea Service Deployment, awarded as U.S. Navy AirCrewman, Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist (Navy), Operation Enduring/Iraqi Freedom Veteran and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medalist and these are just to state the least.

Upon completion from the U.S. Navy he received a basketball scholarship to play at Seward County College in Liberal, Kansas. There he earned an Associates of Science degree in Computer Information Systems.

Since that time, he has sought to continue his education and is currently enrolled in Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where he is pursuing a Bachelors of Science degree in Aeronautics.

After receiving superior accommodations, he finally returned to his native city. Although he found a career working in the Information Technology industry, he soon realized that this was not his true passion. Yet, while working in the IT field, Morris upheld the responsibility of being primary caretaker for his son's mother who is a 100% disabled Navy veteran.

Due to this full time obligation he had no choice but to leave his full-time employment to help her recover after an unsuccessful brain surgery to have a tumor removed.

Though he remained loyal to his family he never allowed his true passion to fade away. He made a sacrifice to offset his vision at an attempt to assist with someone else with getting her life back on track, as much as he was allowed to do.

Though he was literally confined in the physical, he always kept his mind on aviation. He continuously

mounted himself with literature regarding aviation, studied books and consistently kept up with the trending news and issues within the industry.

On November 12, 2013, his vision became a reality and he launched the Aviation S.T.E.M. program. A program that was established, “to engage, inspire and inform disengaged youth, teens women and veterans of the many rewarding careers in the aviation/aerospace industry.”

Morris stated, “I emphasize to all the teens I encounter to never give up on their dreams and if I can be successful in the aviation industry, so can they!” Within the first 10 months of Aviation S.T.E.M. It has already positively engaged more than 2,000 students. Morris admitted that the numbers were well ahead of the intended pre launch goal. He is proud of the fact that his development has had the opportunity to work closely with several organizations and companies

throughout Houston and is looking forward to expanding and working with other positive organizations.

Aviation S.T.E.M. is constantly looking for great volunteers and donors to assist with the program; so that it may continue to thrive as it has for the past year.

Kashmere Multi-Service Center

HOUSTON – AfricanAmerican News& Issues highlights Kashmere Multi-Service Center under the leadership of Director Stephen L. Williams as our business profile of the week.

The Kashmere MultiService Center is a branch of the Houston Department of Health and Human Services, HDHHS. For years throughout the City of Houston, HDHHS has existed to meet the needs of citizens within its area.

According to its history, HDHHS, “provides traditional public health services and seeks to use innovative methods to meet the community’s present and future needs.” The ultimate mission of the organization is to, “work in partnership with the community to promote and protect the health and social well-being of all Houstonians.”

The Kashmere MultiService Center has a list of community services that serve to help assist with the facility’s mission. On site the center has representatives who assist with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, Medicaid, Harris Health formerly

known as the Gold Card.

They also have information concerning rental, housing, weatherization and utility assistance programs available. Additional, resources and programs on-site are as follows: Care Connection: Aging and Disability Resources Center; A.P.C., Inc. - After School Program; Community Re-Entry Network Program (CRNP); HDHHS Homeless Prevention and Rapid ReHousing Program; Kashmere School-Based Wrap Around Project (S.W.A.P); City of Houston Mayor’s Citizen Assistance Office and Neighborhood Centers, Inc. The Care Connection: Aging and Disability Resources Center is a program which focuses on locating both private and public services for older adults and individuals with disabilities of all ages.

The Association for the People and the Community (A.P.C. Inc.) is a non-profit organization that is committed to empowering youth throughout the communities in the form of an after-school program. A.P.C.’s mission is to, “build an intelligent, confident and proactive community.” A variety of tutorials, enrichment activities and college discovery courses are offered through this program.

AUSTIN – The Texas P.O. Number Workforce Commission (TWC) today announced the launch of the Veteran andSignature Industry Partnership (VIP), an initiative to create jobs for veterans and supply a skilled and ready workforce for some of the state’s most high-demand industries: petrochemical, advanced manufacturing and information technology.

TWC has designated

$4.3 million from the state’s Skills Development Fund to establish the initiative, which brings together industry associations, local Workforce Solutions partners and 14-10-08 community colleges to develop training in key industry occupations for veterans.

Local workforce development boards have partnered with industry leaders and 17 colleges throughout Texas to identify high-demand workforce needs in local areas and develop expedited training programs for veterans as part of the VIP initiative. Short-term

certificate attainment and industry-recognized credentials will be included in all three industry training initiatives.

Among the benefits of hiring veterans, the Work Opportunity Tax Credit allows employers to receive up to a $9,600 tax credit on federal business income or payroll tax Date benefits when they hire a qualifying veteran.

All eligible U.S. veterans will have the opportunity to participate in VIP. Funds have been allocated to eligible colleges on a regional basis, based on veteran population and available industry jobs.

“A Man after God’s own Heart” Bishop-Elect C.D. Boulden

HOUSTON - II Timothy 2:24-26 reveals that, “The servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”

A true example of the teachings that the Apostle Paul taught to his young son in the ministry; who became one of the first two bishops is, Houston’s own Southeast side Bishop-Elect C.D. Boulden. While he has been described by many that have come to love and adore him, as a “Man of Many Hats”, Bishop Boulden’s most pertinent hat worn is that of upholding to the call of his heavenly assignment to minister and spread the Word of God. He has not set idle in his command, Boulden personally knows the numerous snares and pitfalls that the devil has set for those who truly have a purpose in God. His knowledge of that truth comes from personal experience, from once being amongst those in bondage.

Boulder knows the street life, “from drug usage to prison covering everything in between.”

However, he has used his own tests and trials as an asset to the ministry of Christ to reach the un-churched and seek to save souls that are lost. He diligently strives to gather and teach those who are in bondage by the enemy that they can have and live a prosperous life in God. Bishop Boulder is a fervent believer and preacher of II Corinthians 10:4-5. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the TX-8

knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

Bishop Elect Boulden is the Senior Pastor of The Real Worship Center Inc., which has become a fixture in the community, providing light to those seeking to come out of darkness. addicts and youth through other entities that the man of God has established. He has implemented several projects including: ground keeping for The Real Worship Center Inc., Just A.S.K. Event Production Company and he has enabled the dispatching of able bodies to other business owners in which he has built relationships with.

Not being willing to make a boast of himself, Bishop Boulden is the visionary of The Real People Awards; an annual Award Ceremony that honors Houston’s over looked advocates in various communities. This year’s Real People Award Luncheon will be held on November 8th at 11 a.m.

On November 9th, Bishop Boulden 9th Year Anniversary will be celebrated and closed out with Bishop P. Landrew.

During an interview, Bishop Boulden expressed that he, “is determined to continuously follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit as he thrusts into another season of ministry.”

He continued, “With having a ministry that has a foundation of being built upon a solid rock, I will continue to rebuke, correct and uplift God’s people through His Word.”

Johnson hails from the Sunshine State, “Florida”.

After graduating high school she proceeded on to attend Vanderbilt University in Nashville,Tennessee. In 1982, after completion of her studies she went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary and Special Education. In the fall off that same year she relocated to Houston and began her path towards a career in education.

School. She later taught at two more schools within Houston ISD, Shearn Elementary and Gregory Lincoln School.

Eventually she begin teaching at Aldine ISD. Her first teaching experience in the Aldine community was at Odom Elementary and Project Recovery at Lane School. While teaching during this time she made a decision to return to school to pursue a Master's degree. She attended Stephen F. Austin State University and successfully completed that goal by earning a Master's degree in MidManagement. Afterwards, she taught at Caraway Intermediate School for five years.

Continually climbing the ladder in the academic community, Johnson began fulfilling the role as an Assistant Principal at Anderson Academy. However, when Houston Academy was opened, she went down in history as being the institution's first principal. After dedicating seven years to the Houston Academy she went back to Anderson Academy, where she remains principal today.

She concluded, “ultimately, that's why I do what I do!”

Mrs. Johnson is married and will be celebrating 30 years of marriage this summer. She also is the mother of two and an active member of Advent Lutheran Church. She is a member of the church choir and enjoys singing.

Free Afterschool Tennis Lessons at Houston-area Parks

HOUSTON - Future tennis stars from the Greater Third Ward area are getting free, year-round lessons after school, thanks in part to a $30,000 grant from Harris County Department of Education’s Center for Afterschool, Summer and Expanded Learning (CASE for Kids).

Operated by the Houston Tennis Association (HTA) and in partnership with the city of Houston’s Parks and Recreation Department, the youth tennis program serves approximately 7,000 kids and is held throughout the year in city parks. The grant from CASE for Kids enabled the HTA to hire and train more coaches and offer classes at more locations. The grant is funded through Houston Endowment, Inc. via the Education Foundation of Harris County.

“Houston Tennis Association provides students who typically may not have opportunities to experience tennis the chance to learn the sport’s fundamentals and develop into quality players,” said Lisa Thompson

Caruthers, director of CASE for Kids. “Participants improve their physical health, enrich their academic experiences and develop their leadership capabilities while learning a new sport and gaining a lifelong love for the game.”

Nine-year-old Tatiana Ryan, who takes tennis lessons at Homer Ford Tennis Center (MacGregor Park), is excited to learn the sport after watching her aunt win a tennis trophy.

“We’ve been catching the balls with each other while moving so we have to work together,” she said. “So other than tennis, we’re learning teamwork.”

Children are taught the fundamentals of tennis and the importance of teamwork. In addition, they receive math, literacy and nutrition lessons that connect state standards to the sport of tennis. The program emphasizes the importance of life skills, so students can fully maximize their potential.

HOUSTON - Behavioral economistudies the effects of psychological, cognitive, social and emotional factors on an individual’s economic decisions. Although the idea has been around since the 18th century, it wasn’t until 1979 that the term really took root. That’s when psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky discussed it in their paper, “Prospect theory: An Analysis of Decision Under Risk.”

Since then, a lot more work has been done on the subject and studies are still being carried out so that we may be able to better understand it. What we do know is that when making a decision, people unwittingly allow their emo-

DIETARY DECEPTION … 3 TO 6 MEALS A DAY?

HOUSTON - Ebony S. Muhammad (EM): Please share your background in the medical field. What inspired you to be a medical doctor?

How many years did you practice traditional medicine, and what was the turning point or event that challenged everything you were taught and trained on?

Akili Muhammad, M.D. (AM): I remember as far back as I can go and I wanted to be a doctor.

My mother says that we were watching a show on television about a cardiovascular surgeon and I told her, ‘That’s what I want to be!’

My father is my greatest example. He was a Captain in the Nation Of Islam and a dentist. When I was in the 6th grade, he converted our garage into his office. I remember playing outside and watching people with swollen faces and in severe pain go in our house/office and within hours leave with smiles. My father’s mark on me was everlasting, because that is the motivation for my practicing medicine – I want to help people improve and leave me better than whence they came.

Prior to graduating high school, I was accepted into a 7 year program at University of California at Riverside and UCLA for undergrad and medical school.

However, I wanted the Black college experience. I attended Prairie View A & M University for undergrad and finished at Meharry Medical College in Dec. 1996. Subsequently, I matriculated at University of Texas at Houston for my Family Medicine Residency, which I graduated in June of 1999.

I was co chief resident my last year and left with so much confidence that I accepted a Medical Director position at a Federal Funded Underserved clinic in South Park called South Central Houston Community Health Center where I performed physician services to all ages and types of problems as well as minor surgeries until I left there in 2001. This was unheard of for a first year physician to take on such task as physician and Medical Director, yet my confidence in my abilities was great.

Although my training was traditional, I was always promoting nutrition and decreasing medicine as the path to improved health. With that mind set I was always researching and reading material that was not traditional, including How to Eat to Live by the Hon. Elijah Muhammad.

In 2004 I met Dr. Abdul Alim Muhammad. Between he and I exchanging many emails and my initial stages of understanding How to Eat to Live, I began questioning everything that I was taught in medical school and residency program.

This was a daunting, destructive, demeaning, invigorating, inspiring and evolutionary experience all in one that culminated with a tumultuous year in 2009.

I had a close cousin enter her third battle with breast cancer who asked me to help her put together a wholistic approach in addition to 2 other deaths of friends (one murder and the other a heart attack) along with a divorce and closure of a six year private practice. I attended my cousin’s funeral in California, but the combination of the two day drive back to Houston and one day of practice when I returned cemented in my mind that traditional medicine was based in too many falsehoods and too much economics superseding true care. I vowed to never return to traditional medicine that day in April 2009! So from December of 1996 to April of 2009, whatever percentage of traditional medicine that I was practicing, I turned to a new chapter with How to Eat to Live as my foundation at that point.

EM: During your years practicing traditional medicine how many patients did you see who suffered with conditions resulting from their diet and eating habits?

AM: Prior to my closure of the six year practice, I concluded that eating habits and traditions was absolutely the underlying cause for 95% of the medical problems in which I was dealing with daily; physical, mental and spiritual. Ending 2008 and starting early 2009, I was averaging 17 patients per day. My frustrations began climbing, because although I was doing much counseling, most Black

people have been trained to seek a quick ‘pill’ to fix whatever has gone wrong.

EM: Now as a wholistic physician, how are you addressing those conditions? For those who applied the healthier method of treatment what were the results? What were the results of those who did not?

AM: Those who did follow my advice, which was always founded in How to Eat to Live, were seeing great and ‘miraculous’ improvements; reversal of high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney problems, heart problems, multiple sclerosis as well as the cessation of medicine for even more problems.

I and those who followed my advice were absolutely convinced that How to Eat to Live was superior information. I didn’t need any more proof; I just needed more people to prove to themselves what I KNEW. The challenge becomes maintenance. It is difficult for people to make lifestyle changes and maintain them. Fear motivates but fear will not maintain people’s actions. We were seeing vast improvements, but then complacency caused a lot to return to past habits, rituals and traditions.

There have been only few that continue the change. In comparison to the traditional ‘pop a pill’ mentality, How to Eat to Live would be like comparing a bathtub to the ocean. From the elation a person feels when their worrisome medical problem is improved and the mental relaxation that is produced, that comparison is fitting.

EVERY patient who was not involved in making lifestyle changes and subjugated themselves to trusting medications worsened and eventually had a progressively poorer or terminal outcome in regards to chronic medical conditions.

EM: Let’s delve into a popular belief as it relates to our eating habits here in America. We are taught to eat 3-6 (small) meals a day with snacks in between. Where did this instruction come from, and what are the believed benefits?

AM: The idea of eating multiple meals a day came from the workout,

muscle building community. As the population of America became larger and larger, the idea of using muscle bound thin people for marketing brought interest in and from that community.

EM: Was this an instruction you offered in traditional medicine and did you practice this as well?

AM: I always tried to live what I taught to my patients, so from approximately 1997 until 2003, I was eating 4 to 5 meals every day. This idea was supposedly in congruence with increasing metabolism and helping people lose weight, but obviously the demographics of America prove that it is not working. The metabolism of our bodies is based on activity, and it doesn’t matter how many meals it takes to get the amount of calories in.

EM: What’s the science behind eating one meal a day? How our bodies and digestive system designed in regards to eating? When we go against that what happens?

AM: Research over the years has proven that digestion time and frequency of digestion is directly related to aging. If a person does a search for calorie restriction or Methuselah mouse, there is plenty information that supports one meal a day as improving health and longevity.

I had an experience with a patient in 2003 when she fell asleep as I was talking to her and I became angry at her. When I realized I had just awakened from a nap myself, I was embarrassed at my anger at her.

That evening, I began reading How to Eat to Live. No book in the previous 17 years of my ‘education’ made so much sense. I immediately jumped in to 1 meal per day to see what the effects were going to be.

I was so convinced that this was superior, I began implementing it with every person who trusted in me and allowed me to put their plan together. The effect for those who attempted to follow, not even fully, saw amazing results.

Scientifically, one meal a day decreases the digestion time, therefore decreasing the work of the body, as well as improving the resolution of toxins and waste. The gastrointes-

tinal system is made to empty itself in 24 hours. So eating 3 meals a day or more has proven to give the length of life that we have in this country, which is extremely short in comparison to scriptures.

EM: Why do doctors continue to misinform the masses (directly and indirectly) to take on and accept what is contrary to the way our bodies are designed to function?

AM: I believe the system of America begins teaching children at a young age to not ask questions and not to challenge the status quo. Doctors have spent many years in school, which ultimately is a training and breeding ground for people to fit in an industry. The first two years of school is learning theory and then the last two are learning application with patients. Well, I noticed while in the process that we literally throw away our theory in turn to follow the ‘example’ of practicing physicians. When in medical school, we had one week of nutrition. So, medical doctors don’t think independently. They think how they are taught to think.

I was labeled as a trouble maker for asking questions in medical school and in residency program. So an introspective critique and change of practice due to outcomes is not common in medicine. This is not a pass, because doctors should be able to conclude that medicines are not healing people and over time they become sicker on more medications.

It is time for doctors to step up and conclude that the system is broken and the people need true help.

EM: Why do you think we have such a difficult time accepting a new life style that can ultimately save and extend our lives?

AM: As a people, Blacks have been shunned away from reading in this country.
