The Midterm Election Aftermath "The issues in the mailing aren't issues we made up or created, they are part of the everyday things our community is thinking about as they head to the polls. Our goal was to amplify these issues.

"We know that some folks are less likely to vote in the midterms when we don't have the same urgency of a national candidate. charged attacks on his authority and impeachment has been a constant refrain from right-wing officials and pundits to rally their base. The former Arkansas Republican Governor Mike Huckabee, a 2016 hopeful and the most high-profile member of the Arkansas GOP, said on conservative radio in August that President Obama "absolutely" deserves to be impeached but that the current Senate would not remove him from office. Equal access to voting remains paramount as numerous reports of voting irregularities emerged during the midterm elections yesterday.

Malfunctioning voting machines, voters turned away because of erroneous voter ID laws, missing names of registered voters and long lines were among the major challenges that the NAACP fielded along with our Election Protection partners via the 1-866-Our-Vote hotline. We as-

Obviously, Republicans had a good night. And they deserve credit for running good campaigns. Beyond that, I’ll leave it to all of you and the professional pundits to pick through yesterday’s results.

What stands out to me, though, is that the American people sent a message, one that they’ve sent for several elections now. They expect the people they elect to work as hard as they do. They expect us to focus on their ambitions and not ours. They want us to get the job done. All of us in both parties have a responsibility to address that sentiment.

Still, as president, I have a unique responsibility to try and make this town work. So, to everyone who

A Republican Midterm Wave Will Further Sink Black America Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author & Political Analyst

GOP pundits and some in the media gleefully noted that a few African-American listeners purportedly walked out on President Obama during a campaign speech he made at a Maryland high school on October 19 to boost the candidacy of Maryland gubernatorial Democrat candidate Lt. Governor Anthony Brown. Brown is in a bid to become the nation’s second African-American governor. This was more than merely an excuse to poke fun at Obama. The point is that supposedly many African-Americans are so turned off by Obama that they will stay home in droves on November 4. And since black and Hispanic voters typically have a lower turnout during off year national elections than older whites, this supposedly will further shatter the Democrat’s chances of staving off the much predicted Republican “wave” of mid-term election victories.

The standard prediction is that the GOP is likely to seize control of the Senate, tighten its grip on the House, and ramp up its control of even more state legislatures and possibly governorships.

The GOP has made no secret of what that will mean. It will hammer even harder the Affordable Care Act, permanently shelve any effort at a minimum wage hike, kill any effort to strengthen voting rights protections, further stymie efforts to expand Medicaid, and harden its line against any of Obama’s judicial and administration appointee that it deems to liberal or moderate. It will effectively dismantle the firewall that Senate Democrats have erected to keep many of the nutty, retrograde initiatives and bills shoved up by the tea party influence GOP controlled House from getting to the Senate floor.

This would force Obama to do two things to counter the GOP dominance.

One is to veto any of the GOP passed bills that gut or peck away at education, health care, and job creation spending and initiatives. The other is to force him to continue to pen more executive orders to get any effective action on vital initiatives. In both cases, the GOP will stand this on its head and scream even louder that Obama is a tyrant, and attempting to usurp congressional authority. There almost certainly will be more dark hints again of impeachment. The aim is to emasculate his presidency.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell crowed the day after Obama won election in 2008 that the GOP would do everything humanly possible to make Obama either a one term president or failing that a failed presidency. That boast wasn’t just about stonewalling Obama. It was a continuation of the GOP’s high intensity war waged by successive GOP presidents Reagan, Bush Sr. and George W. Bush against the moderate reform agenda of Democrats. What’s euphemistically called the liberal, big government, entitlement agenda. That means dismantling or gutting the entire range of health, education, and economic support programs for the poor, working class and minorities.

For the six years of Obama’s White House tenure, the GOP controlled House, most GOP senators, and GOP controlled state Legislatures and state houses across the country, have dithered, hectored, obstructed, and torpedoed the range of initiatives from voting rights protections, Medicaid expansion, greater public school funding, job creation programs, criminal justice and immigration reform, blocked the appointment of moderate judicial nominees, and intensified the assault on labor unions and the Affordable Care Act. A GOP compliant Supreme Court has done everything possible to demolish the campaign funding playing field to allow big corporations and Wall Street to bankroll with impunity rock solid corporate and financial industry friendly Republicans and some Democrats.

No Vote, No Voice!

or the last several months, I have intentionally and repetitively left on the front page of every African-American News & Issues edition a slogan that is of extreme importance to members of every community and especially the Black community. Anyone that has been in my presence or have read any of my editorials before now will no what comes next.

Because I have relentlessly expressed these sentiments hoping and believing that we Africans living in America would get the message. This phrase that I am referring to is, “Your Money and Your Vote – these are the most powerful things you have; be careful who you give them to.” There is a meaning and a reason why I have re-emphasized this message.

There are some things, places, people and otherwise that we can not afford to watch who we give “our money” to because it is of utmost necessity that we do. That is one thing that is understood.

However, majority of the time we have the power of who we entrust “our money” to. But the one thing that no one can control or have any influence whatsoever of is “our vote”.

Certain members of the Black community freely give money away and spend it on a variety of things, yet that’s their prerogative.

Nevertheless, there is “our vote” no one can force us to vote or even persuade or control who or whether we vote. But the thing is when we fail to utilize “our vote” which many people do not realize is simply “our voice” then we lose control or we neglect our right to speak and say anything.

Of course the United States Constitution grants according to the First Amendment the right to freedom of speech. But I’m making reference to making our voices heard where it really does matter.

Now make no mistake, I am not stating that no one within the community has a right to be heard.

It is just that so many people go around bragging and boasting about how, for the first time in American History we have a Black president; seating in the highest seat in office that any man can. Yes that is a great accomplishment and those that read African-American News & Issues quite often have read me offer my compliments as well.

We MUST Understand that even being the president although, he is one that is entitled to certain executive orders, powers and procedures; along with that responsibility comes many others.

For instance the entitlement of having to go through certain methods to get certain bills passed and other things done for the American people which has to go through the House and Senate which collectively makes up Congress.

We MUST Understand the restrictions and limitations that it places upon the POTUS when he is a Democrat and has to be upheld by a strategic Republican party that opposes every single thing that he presents, supports, suggests or even brings to the fore-front.

Though I have wishful thinking of our POTUS and believe that he is going to put his best foot forward and deal with the hand that he has been dealt no matter what.

Hence, there is still almost a blatant reality, that if you think

these last six years have been something on President Barack Obama then you just ain’t seen nothing yet; especially with the Republican party making a hefty sweep in the most recent elections held on Tuesday of this past week.

Ultimately, I have to agree with Author Earl Ofari Hutchison who stated that, “The brutal reality is that a GOP controlled Congress, a GOP White House, a lock down Supreme Court and a majority of GOP controlled state legislatures and governorships would pose something that America hasn’t seen in decades, and that’s a GOP dominated America.” So, Black America prepare yourselves because that is what we are facing at this point and time in history.

As it was, there were two Black men that held two of the three highest seats in the country that any man can. I believe that we all know that Attorney General Eric Holder has decided to resign; although that within itself is another editorial.

At the end of the day all I am stressing is that if you don’t vote, you can sit around and talk about your local school systems, neighborhoods, city, state and nation, all you want to; but that is exactly what you are doing is sitting around and talking because, when you don’t vote believe it or not you don’t have a voice!

HOUSTON - Webster’s Dictionary defines the term “hustler” as having been associated with: “to quickly move or push (someone) often in a rough way; to move or work in a quick and energetic way or to play a sport with a lot of energy and effort.”

To that regard, Curtis James Jackson, III known as “50 Cent” to the Hip Hop community made a statement in regards to hustling. He stated that, “Some people are born with very little; some are fortunate enough to have it all. When I grew up, we didn’t have much. I had to hustle to get what I wanted... but I had that hunger for more. I didn’t always make the right choices, but I learned from my mistakes.”

Much like the well-known rapper, Acres Home’s own born and bred Abron “Lucky” Hunter, III can attest to these words. Birthed as the third child out of eight to Hazel and Abron Hunter, Jr., Lucky as he is known in the “The Hood” early phases of life titled him the idiom ,“Black Sheep of the Family”; a term often associated with “an odd or disreputable member of a group, especially within a family.”

He attended Mabel Wesley Elementary School and M.C. Williams Middle School.

Although he started shooting hooky in the 3rd grade, his parents did not find out until he was in the 5th grade. Though Lucky was very intelligent, he still found himself in trouble TX- 4

as a child. Getting away with a lot of things seemed to come easy to Lucky; undoubtably helping him to live up to the nickname “Lucky” (based from the root word, “luck” which by definition is, a force that brings good fortune or adversity). However, that “luck” did not always bring good fortune as Lucky, recalled his first time going to jail at the age of 16. Unfortunately, he ended up there for a crime that he did not commit. Yet that would only serve to be the beginning of his lifestyle during that dispensation.

Seven years later, after living very riotous life in the streets he ended up in the penitentiary. He stayed there a couple of years and then got out. But at this point in his life he already began to become accustomed to the “street life” and as luck would have it, Lucky ended up in the penitentiary again in 1978.

While, most of the time that he served in the prison was done in solitary confinement; when he wasn’t in his cell, he was out in the fields picking cotton, corn, weeds and things of that sort (but that was also done in solitary).

Lucky described solitary as being a place that was dark 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Throughout his sentence, Lucky was transferred from unit to unit, he vividly recalls being at the Retrieve Unit, now known as the Wayne Scott Unit in Angleton. It was during that time that he remembers being one of the youngest “on the block”. About three years

after being in the Goree Unit (a unit for first convicts), Lucky begin to realize that there had to be a better way. Some years before then, he had already paid for a GED at Texas Southern University. But, he had a GED and still couldn’t read or write. Nonetheless, he had made up in his mind that this small disability would not serve to be a handicap to him. Accordingly, he taught himself to read, write and do legal work while in solitary.

Shortly thereafter he started going to college in prison.

One skill that Lucky always had was that he was good in Math. This skill would prove to be beneficial as he later got into the Craft shop. He was into this work from 1981 – 1984 at the Goree Unit. From there he would go on to play sports and exercise. It wasn’t until he went to school to become a Certified Computer Technician, that he realized that he had a niche in the Computer Industry. Lucky revealed that he was, “transferred from the Jester III Unit in Fort Bend to the Clemens Unit in Brazoria.” Over the course of his 15-year stretch of serving time in prison, he would acquire more skills, gifts and talents that would serve to assist him with making better choices and decisions once he was released. He became a bookkeeper, this role labeled him as the “Go To” person in prison, because back then he explained, “many officers stole and they used him to ‘cook the

books’”. It was while on the Clemens Unit that he earned his Barber’s license, an honor that he is very proud of; because “that was a very hard test”, Lucky said during an interview. He reminisced that it was after taking and passing that test, that he really knew he could pass a test.

As time went on, Lucky would gain a reputation from mentoring other youth that would come into the units that he was on. Of all the faces and people that he remembers he called out three names that he can never forget: John Morgan, Dante and Randolph (although Randolph, “Randy” has been in prison for 40 years, Lucky makes it a point to look after him). He taught them how to do craft among many other resourceful things that he had learned while imprisoned.

After serving a hard yet eventful decade and a half away from family and friends, Lucky was finally released in 1993. However, upon his release he had already made a vow to himself that he would not get caught up, ‘in the game’ the same way he did before he left.

HOUSTON - Recently, The City of Houston honored community leader and Acres Home resident, Mr. Langston G. Knowles for his service, leadership, entrepreneurship and commitment to education.

Mayor Annise Parker designated November 4 as Langston Knowles Day in Houston.

He will be given a proclamation for his contributions to the city thanks to Houston City Council Members, notable community leaders, and those he’s served.

Knowles has been known as a dedicated educator at Booker T. Washington High School for the Engineering Professions and Founder of Knowles Realty Company for many years in Houston. He has also impacted the lives of numerous young men through the Gents organization, a social club he established on the campus of Booker T. Washington High School for the Engineering Professions in 1964, which was founded upon service and commitment to advancing higher education.

Devon J. Castro-Stevenson, Founder and Director of Gents Alumni Inc., says he and the entire organization are so excited for the proclamation of this day. He added, “Mr. Knowles is the most modest person you will ever meet, but he is so deserving of this day of honor.”

HOUSTON - On Sunday, November 02, spiritual and political leaders amongst individuals from various communities came out to the Historic Freedman’s Town for a “Blessing of the Bricks” ceremony. They all gathered at across from St. James United Methodist Church at 1314 Andrews St., 77019.

The residents along with other concerned citizens all congregated with leaders across Houston to update and share with the public the serious risk of Mayor Annise Parker, “authorizing the City Public Works Department and Conrad Constructions beginnings its destruction of the historic brick streets.” Brick streets that were built and paved by former slaves.

Religion Profile: St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church

HOUSTON - African-American News&Issues presents, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church as our Religion Profile of the week. The church is under the Missionaries of St. Paul; where Father Edmund Nnadozie, serves as Pastor. The parish is located at 5102 Dabney St., 77026. The church has a rich history that extends over six decades ago.

Accordingly that history entails that on June 26,1950, Bishop Wendelin J. Nold signed a decree establishing St. Francis of Assisi Parish. The original parishioners were of Czech and other European origins. Slowly over the years AfricanAmericans moved into the area and the Whites departed.

The parish is now predominantly African-American, with a large number of Filipinos who worship with the El Shaddai ministry on Saturday.

Currently, the Church has approximately 850 registered families served by three weekend masses.

The present church structure was built in 1965. The new church was designed with its patron St. Francis of Assisi in mind. Instead of a traditional style steeple, the top of the church was designed to resemble a cowl (capuche), the pointed hood worn by monks.

Upon the entrance of the church, which is the south vestibule (to the right) is the Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi. Depictions on the walls include pictures of Black saints and the founders of religious orders. This area was TX-8

refurbished by the generous gift of Dr. & Mrs. Kenneth D. Wells.

The sanctuary lamp above the altar was salvaged from the old St. Mary’s Orphanage, Galveston, that was destroyed in the Great Hurricane of 1900. A gift from the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, legend says that, a cluster of sisters and orphans were found dead huddled under the sanctuary lamp.

To the left of the main altar is the Baby Cry Room, dedicated to St. Joseph. Several prints of Joseph and Jesus are on the west wall.

Immediately behind the main altar is the Marian Chapel.

The chapel dedicated to Mother and Child has representative artworks from many ethnic and racial groups.

Monsignor Patrick Wells collected the artwork, numbering 25 pieces, over several years. The Marian Chapel is used for daily masses. Additionally, pictures of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Blessed Mother Theresa of Calcutta can be found on the south wall of the main sanctuary. A tapestry of “Our Mother of Africa” hangs in the northwest corner of the main sanctuary.

The parish strives toward a vision which promotes: “a caring, loving community of men, women and children who possess a genuine Christian concern for one another, a unified family where the members, aware of God’s presence in each of them and led by His spirit are able to work, pray and play together; a faith filled community where gospel values are studied, lived, nurtured, shared and celebrated; a community of individuals and groups traveling together on a common faith journey; a community harmoniously working for the kingdom; a community that is active in service and evangelization.”

The Mass Schedule for St. Francis of Assisi is as follows: Saturday Vigil, 5:00 p.m.; Sunday Mass, 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.; services in the Marian Chapel are held on Tuesday, 6:00 p.m.; Wednesday 7:00 a.m.; Thursday 7:00 a.m. and Friday at 8:00 a.m.

services are in the Main Sanctuary.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is Saturday from 4:25 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. or by appointment. Baptism for the parish are the 3rd Sunday of the month.

St. Francis of Assisi School In addition to the church there is the St. Francis of Assisi School which has a mission of, “developing student leaders by emphasizing faith, service and academic excellence while maintaining a strong tradition of Catholic values.”

The school is a part of the parish and states that they, “are committed to walking with students down the exciting, enriching and challenging road to academic success.” It has offered a quality, faith-based education to students throughout the neighborhood for over 50 years.

Not only has the school educated members from its neighborhood but families from all over the greater Houston area have attended the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School.

Thus creating a representation of many faiths, and allowing the school to share its vision and commitment of working toward the actualization of each student’s potential.

The school’s design and structure is geared towards, “each student receiving an education that will prepare them academically, spiritually and developmentally to excel at some of the city’s best college preparatory high schools-- and they will have the freedom to do so within an inclusive atmosphere that fosters a love of learning, developing the values to make responsible choices and the importance of service to others.”

EveriGirl is an up and coming online apparel company featuring graphic tees with fun characters along with inspirational slogans to promote self esteem and confidence in youth. The company has developed a motto which states, “because every girl is beautiful”.

Their vision and main objective is, “to motivate young girls and teach them that beauty has no color or size.”EveriGirl is owned and operated by two sisters, Stephanie Marshall-Thomas and Monnika Marshall-McFarlin.

The two have compiled a slogan which entails the following, “God’s Children are His; Made in His perfect image; We do not have the right to determine which one of His vast creations is perfect.” The development of the company has quite an interesting tale according to it’s history and formation.

The Story of EveriGirl: In 2010, a mother was giving her 6-year-old, brown skinned daughter a bath as she played with her fair skinned doll. During their casual conversation, she was

shocked to hear her daughter say she wished she looked like her doll because they are beautiful.

Immediately the mom told her daughter that her brown skin was beautiful and God made her the way He wanted her.

However at that moment, the mother’s reality set in realizing that there isn’t any representation of her daughter in the clothes she wears, the toys she plays with and just in everyday life. In a frequent trip to

lack Americans are into politics, but only at the retail level as “consumers.” After all of the trappings of the candidate are in place, Blacks get to go to the polls and pull levers. It’s “the kingmakers” who determine what names appear on the ballots.

For example, instead of being “Hillary supporters,” some Blacks could be on the “ground floor” of the presidential campaign. People at the Ready for Hillary Super PAC say that a 2016 Hillary Clinton campaign could cost $1.7 billion.

Conventional wisdom indicates that African-Americans contribute few dollars to federal candidates running for office. But Blacks’ overall political participation is on par with White Americans, relative to differences in education and income. You’d think that with the rise of Barack Obama it seems logical that African-American donations

would increase, but donations from Blacks did not increase in 2008; indeed, they actually declined compared to 2006 and 2004. According to posts, actor Morgan Freeman gave a million dollars to the Obama super PAC, Priorities USA Action. African-American real estate developer Wayne Jordan gave $500,000 to two Obama political action committees (PACs).

Most Blacks want to refrain from letting their political ideologies intersect with their businesses. But some Blacks may want to take a look at the business of political fundraising. In United States politics much importance is put on raising money. On the basic business end of politics, fundraising plays a large role in getting candidates elected to public office. Without substantial sums of money, a candidate has virtually no chance of achieving his or her

Of all the advertisements, sales papers, her beautiful brown skinned daughter is confronted with on a daily basis, there is none that represent her. What does this say not only to African-American girls, but all girls? That only one

type of girl is beautiful? That only one type of girl is worthy to have an abundance of dolls that look like her or adorn a favorite tee? Thus with all these questions in mind, the company EveriGirl was born.

Consistent with EveriGirl’s motto, its main purpose is to create a culture of recognizing the beauty in all girls. Because AfricanAmerican girls are underrepresented when it comes to graphic tees, toys, etc, EveriGirls current

goal. In the 2004 general elections, 95 percent of House races and 91 percent of Senate races were won by the candidate who spent the most on their campaigns. Also, it’s easier to stay in office than to get there. Incumbents are generally able to raise more money than their opponents.

Plane tickets, hotel rooms, campaign headquarters overhead, staff, event catering, event space and entertainment are the types of costs to be incurred on the campaign trail. In America, the legitimacy of a candidate is directly proportional to the size of their campaign coffers.

As the 2016 presidential race starts to hit high tide many Blacks may be eager to back a candidate by hosting fundraising events, volunteering or just placing a campaign sign on their car or inside a home window.

Fundraising is the process of soliciting and gathering voluntary contributions of money or other resources, by requesting donations from individuals, busi-

nesses, charitable foundations, or governmental agencies. Although fundraising typically refers to efforts to gather money for nonprofit organizations, it is sometimes used to refer to the identification and solicitation of investors or other sources of capital for for-profit enterprises. Fundraising is the type of business that you can start at home or in a small office.

A professional fundraiser works with charities, nonprofit organizations, schools, groups and political campaigns to help organizations raise the money. A fundraising business owner may work to plan special fundraising events, call on donors and help guide the organization with its marketing efforts to promote the cause.

Fundraising firms work with clients to establish a finance plan and its execution. Most campaigns need a finance committee, fundraising events, major donor solicitation, direct mail and online fundraising.

Collectively, Stephanie Marshall-Thomas, Monnika Marshall-McFarlin and their mother who works diligently right beside them in the person of Natalynn Marshall has a goal.

That goal is to be the change that they wish to see, “first starting in our homes, communities, city to state, reaching the nation and beyond.” Additionally, they are striving to become, “a worldwide brand of products that any and every girl will wear.”

Candidates can raise large sums of money in a single night by hosting sit-down dinners for targeted, wealthy donors for a per-plate fee. Micro targeting is a technique of sifting through personal data and extracting what's useful. Campaigns hire data-mining specialists to get specific information on potential voters and donors.

Those people are then micro targeted with personal messages.

Today, diabetes affects more than 29 million people in the United States or over 9 percent of the population. In addition, another 86 million American adults, more than one out of three individuals, have pre-diabetes, a condition that puts people at increased risk for diabetes. Many African Americans are included in these statistics. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 13 percent of African Americans have diagnosed diabetes. Although all people with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2, are at risk for diabetic eye disease, African Americans with diabetes are at higher risk of losing vision or

going blind from the disease.

Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication of the disease and includes cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Diabetic retinopathy, the most common diabetic eye disease, is the leading cause of blindness in adults 20–74 years of age. According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), more than 800,000 African Americans have diabetic retinopathy, and this number is projected to increase to approximately 1.2 million people by 2030.

“The longer a person has diabetes, the greater is his or her risk of developing diabetic eye disease,” said Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., director of NEI. “If you have diabetes, be sure to have a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. Don’t wait until you notice an eye problem to have an exam, because vision that is lost often cannot be restored.”

Nutrition Services in Select Stores Across Texas During American Diabetes Month

SAN ANTONIO - In its commitment to helping customers create healthier habits and fight obesity and diabetes, H-E-B has partnered with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to announce the launch of H-E-B Nutrition Services.

Registered dietitians and nutritionists will be in select stores throughout Texas providing affordable nutrition education and care, including private one-on-one consultations, grocery shopping tours, cooking demonstrations, group health classes, kids cooking classes, “lunch and learn” sessions, disease management classes and more.

The program is designed to help educate Texans based upon their individual health and nutrition needs. Currently, H-E-B is accepting Medicare, Humana and Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance for these health-based services, with even more insurance providers slated to join by 2015.

H-E-B’s nutrition experts will also be available upon request for off-site group nutrition events such as health classes, cooking demonstrations, speaking events and training.

H-E-B is a long-time supporter of the American Diabetes Association and its mission to prevent and cure diabetes, and to improve the lives of all people affected by this disease. The launch of H-E-B Nutrition Services coincides with American Diabetes Month and the American Diabetes Association’s current “America Gets Cooking to Stop Diabetes” campaign.

Research has shown that when people with diabetes maintain good control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol, they can slow the development and progression of diabetic eye disease. In addition to having a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year, people with diabetes should do the following to keep their health on TRACK: • Take your medications.

• Reach and maintain a healthy weight.

• Add physical activity to your daily routine.

• Control your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

• Kick the smoking habit.

Aldine Education Foundation Holds 3rd Annual Donor Breakfast Recently, the Aldine Education Foundation (AEF) held its third annual Donor Breakfast to celebrate past accomplishments and look ahead to the future. The event was held at the M.O. Campbell Education Center.

During the breakfast, Penny Westerfeld, interim president of Lone Star College-North Harris, presented a $10,000 donation to AEF. The money will be used exclusively to provide scholarships to schools in the Lone Star College System to graduating Aldine ISD seniors.

“We are proud of the wonderful partnership we have with Aldine ISD,” Westerfeld said. “We want to thank you for this long and wonderful partnership.”

Also during the breakfast, attendees heard from

Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. Wanda Bamberg, who provided an overview of AEF. She reported that the Foundation awarded three $5,000 scholarships and 25 $1,000 scholarships to AISD seniors during the 2013-14 school year and nine teacher grants totaling $31,755.

“This is a wonderful organization for our children and we’re excited about the work that’s been done thus far,” Dr. Bamberg said.

During the breakfast, the audience also heard from Dr. Emily Bartley, who was the district’s Secondary Teacher of the Year during the 201314 school year, a group of teachers from Hinojosa EC/ Pre-K Center who were AEF teacher grant recipients and from AEF Board Member Kyle Sadler.

Dr. Bartley was awarded

$5,000 by AEF for being selected the district’s Secondary Teacher of the Year, and put the money to good use.

“I’m still amazed with Aldine and the appreciation they showed to not only me, but to all the campus teachers of the year. They honored every teacher financially.”

She in turn used some of the funds she received to help her students at Aldine High School.

She paid for one of her students’ books for his first two semesters of college, and also helped out other of her students who needed it.

“We need to teach our students to give back,” she said. “My students were amazed at what the Foundation gave to our teachers.”

exas Southern University’s College of Science, Technology, has been authorized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to begin offering Bachelor’s degree programs in Civil Engineering in the spring of 2015 and in Electrical and Computer Engineering in the fall of 2015.

“This is a major addition to COSTs STEM degree programs and a great step forward in the advancement of education for minority students,” said Dr. Lei Yu, COST dean. “These programs will provide significantly to the workforce for civil, electrical and computer engineers.” According to Yu, these are the professional occupations with the greatest demand of all engineering and science occupations and which have the least minority practitioners.

Students graduating from the newly minted engineering programs will be in great demand, as the statistics show that the demand for engineering graduates in the next decade is expected to increase at more than double the rate for all other professionals.

Civil engineering is expected to experience significant growth in light of the urgent need to rebuild the national infrastructure.

Electrical and computer engineering will also be expected to grow significantly with the advent of the “Internet of Things” and the automation of the manufacturing, transportation, and energy infrastructures. Engineering education is considered a priority for the State’s economic well-being and the national security. TSU will now be able to join other institutions to make its contributions by adding the production and diversification of highly skilled engineers to the workforce in the State.

Both programs will be accredited through the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) which is the major engineering program accreditation body in the United States. Both programs will differ from other similar programs in the area by including a formal co-op engineering track. Working with corporations, industries and government agencies, the Cooperative Education Track will give students the opportunity to gain work experience before graduating. Alternating work semesters with school semesters, the students can work towards career goals in a meaningful job while going to school and testing degree interests in real-world situations.

“It was our goal to develop a Civil Engineering Program that would provide high-quality, practice-focused education to fully develop and enrich the students’ lives in a culturally diverse environment; and develop their personal potential to the greatest extent possible to serve the society at large,” said University President Dr. John Rudley. He added, “I am so very happy for our university, our current and future students and our alumni and former students.”

“Societal needs call for greater diversity within the engineering profession,” Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. James Ward noted. “Historically, African- Americans have been severely underrepresented in the engineering fields so consequently there is a dire need to implement more academic programs that will attract, nurture and graduate more African Americans in the engineering disciplines. Our two new degree programs will contribute to stemming the tide of constant decline in the number of degrees awarded to minorities and African American students in Civil, Electrical and Computer Engineering.”
