Haven’t you seen the military equipment on rail cars being shipped to police stations? Don’t be fooled by the obvious. There is a greater agenda at work here. Think about this, more black men have been gunned downed by police under President Obama’s watch than the last few presidencies combined. I’m not saying it’s his fault but what’s really going on?

Yes it’s hard seeing your family members being mercilessly shot down like rabid dogs and killed at the hands of fools drunk on power, then only to be exonerated of all charges. It’s hard not to get caught up in the rage. If we protest and fight we are in a no win situation. I am tired of seeing my people on the short end of the stick, frustrated with a lack of hope that things will ever get better.

Those Nazi Demons are ready to annihilate us. We have to be wise and beat them at their own game. God has placed in nature a law that rewards those that increase their chance of survival. It naturally selects things that are better and more suited for survival. It’s the evolution of natural selection.

We the Descendants of African Slaves are the youngest human beings on the planet.

And we are like Bebe’s kids “We don’t die we multiply”. In reality that’s what we must do.

We must prepare our youth to with stand this physical, mental and spiritual warfare that is targeted against them.

Thanks To Trump The Democrats Can Take Back Congress, If They Get Their Act Together Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author & Political Analyst

GOP presidential contender Donald Trump has given Democrats something that seemed only the stuff of shop talk, wishful thinking, and even fawn dreams a year ago. That’s a real shot at taking back Congress.

First, let’s get the presidential race out of the way. Long before Trump’s campaign came totally discombobulated amidst the sex charge stuff, there was almost no way that he, or any other GOP presidential candidate for that matter, realistically could have won. Clinton had nearly twenty states big, little and mid-sized either locked down, or that solidly tilted toward the Democrats. This gave Clinton more than 200 electoral votes before the first voter punched a ballot ticket. Barring any major Clinton scandal, revelation, near cataclysmic crash of the economy, or 9/11 style terrorist attack on US shores a week before the election, it didn’t require much for her to net the remaining 60 plus electoral votes in other states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Colorado which have solid Democratic numbers and voted for Obama twice. So, that leaves the Senate and the House in play.

This requires grabbing five contested Senate seats from the GOP and keeping the ones that are fairly safely in Democratic hands. In the House it meant taking 30 of the seats that are in play to get full control, or at the very least winning as many of them as possible to dent the GOP House majority. The Senate takeover is eminently doable since the Democratic contenders are either

seasoned elected officials, with solid name identification, a solid voter base, financial backing, and a fairly good ground game. The Democratic National Committee and other Democratic funding and organizing committees, are providing solid back up and support to the candidate’s campaigns.

The House is the much tougher nut to crack, since many of the seats appear to be in either lock down or heavily GOP leaning districts. There are reasons this could change. One is Trump. His race baiting, woman bashing, immigrant scapegoating, campaign of vilification and deliberate polarization could radically ramp up the number of independent, and even moderate, centrist Republicans, who defect to the Democratic candidate.

Trump almost certainly will energize Democrats to flood the polls to defeat him and in the process boost the vote total for the l Democratic congressional challenger.

The most winnable House seats are not in the hard core GOP bastions in the South and the Heartland, but are in Colorado, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Nevada, and Minnesota that are either Democratic controlled or swing states. The voter demographics in the competitive districts are not top heavy with Trump’s core voter base, namely lower income, blue collar, rural, less educated whites, but are suburban districts with a sizeable number of college degree, or educated, professional, business career voters. They are conservative, and have voted GOP, but the GOP presidential candidate they backed was a traditional GOP candidate such as John McCain or Mitt Romney, not a race baiting, polarizing Trump.

YOUR LIFE CAN BE CHANGED WITH THE STROKE OF A PEN!

Howard Zinn in his version of A People’s History of the United States once made reference to a very true thought.

In it he said, “The prisons in the United States had long been an extreme reflection of the American system itself: the stark life differences between rich and poor, the racism, the use of victims against one another, the lack of resources of the underclass to speak out, the endless “reforms” that changed little. It had long been true, and prisoners knew this better than anyone, that the poorer you were the more likely you were to end up in jail. This was not just because the poor committed more crimes. In fact, they did. The rich did not have to commit crimes to get what they wanted; the laws were on their side. But when the rich did commit crimes, they often were not prosecuted, and if they were they could get out on bail, hire clever lawyers, get better treatment from judges. Somehow, the jails ended up full of poor Black people.” And I could not agree with the famed historian more!

For this reason, I have decided to convey the importance of us looking, paying attention and being proactive in our upcoming elections. All races within an election are important. However, I would like to encourage the faithful and loyal readers of African-American News&Issues, to pay close attention to the District Attorney and Judge offices that will be on the ballot. Many people do not realize that with the “stroke of the pen”, the District Attorney has the power to change a person’s life, by indicting. Then the judge has the power to lock you up, that’s what you call, “Power”! It’s just as simple as that.

I will not attempt to sway our readers in any way in reference of who to vote for.

But I am simply asking that

members from our community pay attention to these races and vote. District Attorney Devon Anderson and Kim Ogg are the candidates for the seat of District Attorney. I would like to try to convince as many people as I can to zoom in on these races. I cannot place enough emphasis on us paying attention to this race and going out to vote. It is no secret to anyone that we are steady losing our young Black kids to imprisonment and being caught up in the judicial system all together.

From times past, we have seen repeatedly that many of the tradition District Attorney’s are not doing anything to protect our communities. All that means to me is that we have to do it ourselves, by electing people who will actually care and protect our communities.

We need to have some serious influence in this race. Because it’s a sad reality that here in Harris County, we have more African-Americans incarcerated than any third world country in the world. I would think that this should be cause to, “sound the alarm”.

Now, I’m sure that there are some people that believe that I don’t have a clue of what I am talking about. Some people may believe that the presidential election supersedes any political race there is. We MUST Understand that ALL races are important when it comes to protecting our communities.

However, I will adamantly continue to say that the local races held within counties, cities and parishes are extremely crucial and vital to our communities.

If you think I’m lying the next time your son, daughter, niece, nephew, cousin, other relative, friends or even yourself get caught in the crossfire of the judicial system; I urge you to try to find your way to Washington D.C. and demand that the President sentences you

or your family. I dare you to go marching up there to plead your case; chances are you won’t even make it pass the gate. My point is, while the highest seat in the country that a person can occupy is the presidential seat; when it comes to making decisions that directly affects you right in your own backyards these local seats are not to be taken lightly. As it is by way of chain of command, the ultimate power is invested into the District Attorney and Judges.

With that being stated, it just so happens that we Africans living in America have a voice in determining the right people to put in place. But we must utilize that voice and encourage others to do the same.

We MUST Understand that it is crucial that we look at our court systems and vote the right people in office that are going to do the right thing without respect to ancestral origin, color, culture, etc. It is time out for us letting people sell us wooden nickels and label it as politics, when they have the power to control the destiny of our future, if we allow it.

Concluding, I must refer to my own words. We as Africans living in America have two of the most powerful tools that a person can have. Those tools are, “our money” and “our vote”. Therefore, we must be very careful in whom we invest them to.

SAN DIEGO - Top Cops all over America are grappling with the challenges of how to erase historical injustices and rebuild community trust in African-American communities without hurting future ranks.

That is the focus of law enforcement leaders meeting at the 2016 International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Annual Conference and Exposition in San Diego, California.

A Sincere Apology “Events over the past several years have caused many to question the actions of our officers and has tragically undermined the trust that the public must and should have in their police departments,” IACP President Terrence M. Cunningham said in a statement released by IACP. “For our part, the first step in this process is for law enforcement and the IACP to acknowledge and apologize for the actions of the past and the role that our profession has played in society’s historical mistreatment of communities of color.”

Chief Terrence M. Cunningham has more than 32 years of experience as a police officer, 16 as Chief of Police of the Wellesley Police Department, Wellesley, Massachusetts.

During his distinguished career in professional policing, he has served as President of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, Vice President for four years and Chairman of the Legislative Committee for the past eight years. He is currently a member of the Executive Board of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, the Greater Boston Police Council and the New England Association of Chiefs of Police.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) is a professional association for law enforcement worldwide. For more than 120 years, the IACP has

been launching internationally acclaimed programs, speaking on behalf of law enforcement, conducting groundbreaking research, and providing exemplary programs and services to members across the globe.

FBI Involvement/Input Adding to the public apology and raised awareness among top law enforcement brass was Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey, who told the group of police chiefs that leadership is needed that can bring about a balance that not only helps reduce friction between police and the Black community, but also improves police images and nurture relationships that encourages more young African-Americans and others to have a desire to serve as police officers in the future.

Both Cunningham and FBI Director Comey noted that it is a challenging time to serve in policing, but that leaders must assess the situation and take the steps necessary to move forward.

According to Comey problems are multiplied by a narrative that is forming about American policing. It is a narrative that has formed, in the absence of good information and in the absence of actual data, and it is this: Biased police are killing Black men at epidemic rates.

“That is the narrative,” he said. “It is a narrative driven by video images of real misconduct, possible misconduct, and perceived misconduct.” Given the national attention given to police shootings and the number of Black males being shot

and killed by police, the two focused on history, but played down the notion that shootings are epidemic.

According to the Guardian, in 2016, 856 people have been shot to death by police, Of those, 204 of those are African-Americans.

Cops Need Better Understanding of Black History with Police Comey called on law enforcement leadership to know their neighborhoods with the greatest need being for police to know the people who live there.

In particular, the history and journey of Black America. “...Know the hopes, the dreams, the disappointments and the pain,” he said. “Know the history of law enforcement’s interaction with Black America, because the Black people of America know it... AfricanAmericans, like all Americans, want good policing because they know it is the path to safety and prosperity.”

Comey also challenged the constant upheavals over police shooting stating that more facts are needed and more done to track data before jumping to or drawing conclusions over the shootings.

“Americans actually have no idea whether the number of Black people or brown people or white people being shot by police is up, down, or sideways over the last 10 years,” Comey said.

Notice is hereby given that the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, TX (METRO) will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, October 26 at 12 noon to receive public comment regarding a proposed fare change to amend the fare policy to provide free fixed-route service to qualified disabled and decorated veterans.

A description of the proposed fare changes will be available October 12 for public review at the following locations: • Online - RideMETRO.org • METRO Administration Building - 1900 Main St., Houston, TX 77002 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM weekdays The public hearing will be held in the METRO Board Room on the 2nd floor at 1900 Main St., Houston, TX. The meeting will also be streamed live on RideMETRO.org.

ACRES HOMES - As early voting approaches, Harris County’s failure to make polling place reforms quickly before the November presidential election may have claimed its first casualty right here in Acres Homes.

More than 2500 voters who voted at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church at 2516 Paul Quinn Street in Harris County Precinct # 576 no longer have a place to go.

“They don’t have a place for us to have the election,” said Charles Ingram, who serves as Harris County Precinct 576 Judge and Precinct Chair Chair. “This is a voting rights issue for the people living in this area of Acres Homes.”

The polling place had previously served voters at that location for 30 years.

Their voting rights are in danger of being impaired because they have been left high and dry with no direction and no idea where to go and cast their ballots – drawing the ire of leaders and residents who say Harris County dropped the ball.

African-American News&Issues made calls and left messages at the Harris County Clerk’s Office, District Clerk offices and to the voting division offices of Christopher Daniels, but no calls were returned.

Ingram calls the failure to set up a place for people to go to vote not only unacceptable and the action has angered many longtime Harris County voters who participate in elections there.

“The county clerk never gave us official notices of any changes and did not let voters know any alternatives by mail or phone call or signs,” he said. “This is unacceptable to deny the people here their rights and a place for them to go and

cast their ballots.”

According to records, many polling places in Harris County which were surveyed by the justice department during elections in 2013 and 2016 were found to have architectural barriers — such as steep ramps and narrow doors — that make them inaccessible to voters who use wheelchairs.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in the Southern District of Texas, requires accessibility improvements to polling places in future elections and training for poll workers about accessibility features. The Department of Justice also seeks changes to the process Harris County uses to select its polling places.

In that suit, it was alleged that Harris County also failed to accommodate the needs of voters who are blind or have vision impairments, the suit said. Voters with disabilities are “being denied the same opportunities as non-disabled voters to vote in person,” according to the lawsuit.

It is not known whether St. Paul MBC was targeted and taken off polling place listing for non-compliance, but it is not currently listed on the county’s lost of polling places. A look at the list reveals that Precinct 0576 has no polling place listed – only the words, “To Be Determined”.

“Why is this being done now. The whole thing is unacceptable, upsetting and has been mishandled badly,” he said. “The people want to vote. If you are not going to have it there people should have been notified me or the people by letter and told us where to go. I want answers and I want them now.”

Ingram said he plans to take the matter up with state and federal officials.

The City of Houston Housing and Community Development Department (HCDD) submitted the Action Plan for Disaster Recovery – 2015 Flood Events (Plan) to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Plan serves as an application for $66,560,000 in federal funds provided through the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery Program (CDBG-DR). This funding is to be used to address flooding impacts from major disasters declared in 2015 and future flood resiliency. Major disasters due to severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding were declared on May 29, 2015 and November 25, 2015.

Mayor Turner: Houston Nears Goal of $15 Million to End Chronic Homelessness

JPMorgan Chase Commits $1 Million to The Way Home to Fight Homelessness in Houston HOUSTON - The road to end homelessness for many AfricanAmericans, veterans and other minorities just got smoother as Mayor Sylvester Turner announced a $1 million grant from JPMorgan Chase to support Houston’s ambitious efforts to end chronic homelessness through The Way Home – the Houston region’s nationally recognized homeless housing initiative.

“Merely maintaining our momentum of reducing homelessness is not enough,” Turner said. “It is not about managing homelessness, but solving it. Homelessness may be a complex, centuries-old issue, but I have no doubt that we will continue to achieve the long-term goal of effectively housing Houston’s homeless.”

JPMorgan Chase the first corporate donor to support The Way Home’s development of permanent supportive housing for homeless Houstonians.

The Way Home has now raised $7 million towards its $15 million goal to finish creating 2,500 units of housing for chronically homeless individuals. These vulnerable individuals have all been homeless for a year or more and suffer from a disabling condition.

Ending chronic, veteran and family homelessness is a top priority for Mayor Turner and the City of Houston, as well as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Labor and Veteran’s Administration.

Since 2012, the City has worked with over 100 collaborative partners to house over 7,000 homeless individuals, including 4,735 homeless veterans. Overall homelessness in the City has been reduced by nearly 57% during this period.

Through The Way Home, more than 100 local governmental, business, faith, nonprofit, and charitable organizations are working together to build and manage a single system utilizing a “Housing First” strategy to solve homelessness. Since 2011, more than 3,325 chronically homeless individuals and over 4,920 home-

less veterans have been permanently housed, helping reduce overall homelessness by 57% and essentially ending veteran homelessness in the region.

“JPMorgan Chase’s support is more than just a grant, and it’s more than just about getting the homeless off our streets. It’s an investment in solving homelessness and changing the lives of homeless Houstonians,” said Mayor Turner.

“The Houston region is on track to end chronic homelessness, but we need the community’s support to cross the finish line. Therefore, I challenge other corporations, large and small, across our city, state and nation to follow JPMorgan Chase’s

MISSION STATEMENT

On September 24, 2016, the world got a chance to witness what we have known for generations. They will now have the opportunity to become familiar with the triumphant, redeeming history that is ours. On that day was the opening of the National African American History Museum. It was eleven years in the making. Although many people take issue with our former Republican President, George W. Bush, he authorized the creation of the museum during his presidency. Lonnie G. Bunch III was appointed as director of the facility that would tell our story from the Middle Passage to our current day struggles. With such a task at hand, the leaders of this effort knew the project would undergo much scrutiny, so every detail needed to convey just how much thought and research was poured into the museum’s creation-even including the building’s architecture. It would span five stories high and would mimic the shape of the crowns that our ancestors wore long before they knew of a place called America. The building design was brought to life by architect, David Adjaye who shared that the exterior, made of bronze colored plates, gives the illusion of darkness and symbolized the dark but transformational presence that Black people have had in America. The completed project cost more than five hundred forty million dollars, with more than four million of it donated by common citizens.

Since its opening, the museum has seen a constant flow of visitors who have ranged from our most celebrated personalities to everyday people. The inaugural ceremonies lasted three days and was attended by President Barack Obama, among other dignitaries. Activities included musical tributes, dances, poetic presentations and opportunities to learn tidbits about African culture.

Within the negative tidal wave of police brutality sweeping our country, the museum’s opening was a welcomed, redeeming acknowledgment of our contributions to this society and economy. The celebration of who we are on this national scale helps to reassure us that not all politicians are self-serving, not all law-

From the time I started school until now, my junior year in high school, my mother has always told me “Angel go to college; get a career; you shouldn’t want just a job; you should want a something more; be someone I never got the chance to be.” I’ve always heard that even during times when I wanted to give up, I just knew that one day all of the hard work was going to pay off. My mother has been my biggest inspiration. She didn’t get the chance to go to college. At the age of 16 she had her first child. No one was there to help her, so she had to drop out of high school to take care of her child. She is the strongest woman I know because she raised my four brothers and me by herself.

men are biased against Blacks and not every judge and jury are close eyed to justice and equality. Maybe America did in fact get something right along the way. What the African American has to offer is an integral component to what makes American who she is. As quoted by our President during his opening day speech, the museum is a “place to understand how protest and love of country don’t merely coexist but inform each other.” It gives us permission to embrace both.

Although my family and I have not had the opportunity to visit the museum, I hope one day, the opportunity comes my way. Reports about the 35,000 artifacts making up the 12 exhibits is sure to incite curiosity and pride in every onlooker. When a person has a desire to learn, they have a desire to improve themselves. As crime in our communities continues to rise along with high school dropout rates, families should be encouraged to bring their children to learn about their history and culture in ways that are genuine and fair. What would be the impact of more teenagers knowing and appreciating their history? How would it change the path they take? If Washington’s students were able to witness firsthand the power, preservation and influence that existed in one race of people, who could they become? Our charge, our mission: lift the veil of ignorance, educate and watch them soar.

She did not get the chance to start college until we were older. To raise us, she worked and earned her Certified Nurse’s Assistant license to start working at nursing homes. She realized that raising four kids was expensive and went back to school to earn her cosmetology license to become a stylist. During the daytime, she would work in a salon and at night, she worked at a nursing home. Needless to say, she didn’t get much sleep and when she did, she slept all day. In spite of always having somewhere to go or things to do, she still found ways to make sure we were taken care of. She enlisted the help of her cousin to come over and baby sit us and clean the house. Although my mother had various types of help at times, she always carried the burden of ensuring that we had everything we needed to

develop into independent people. During those times of less help, my older brother got a job to help her with some of the bills but she still maintained two jobs. After many transitions, helping others and being helped, she enrolled at Long Star College.

When she first started, she struggled.

Sometime I would even see her cry. I kept encouraging her to keep going ensuring that it would get easier. Even though throughout many trials, my mother was not able to continue her post-secondary goals at Long Star College, through her experiences, trials, and setbacks, I have learned a great deal. All of the struggles my mother endured have strengthened her resolve to always strive for success, but it also strengthened her message to her children and others.

Living the Booker T. Washington’s Legacy

ooker T. Washington High School has a lot of student potential. There is so much talent that teachers seem to see in them.

Students are making this school better every year because of the examples that have been set in historical terms and the ones that are set for us every single day.

On April 5, 1856, Booker Taliaferro Washington was born into a life of challenges and hardship. He excelled in education and graduated from Hampton University in 1875 at the top of his class. He began teaching and he knew he had found his passion. It was while he was a teacher that he increased his influence within the African American community. His message to them was through hard work and self-pride, people who were oppressed could overcome their struggle by building up their own neighborhoods and businesses. By doing this, they make themselves proud and earn the respect of other people.

After becoming a famous speaker and writer, in 1881 the state government in Alabama agreed to establish the first technical school for African Americans named the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute. While leading his school, he instilled in his students his life’s mission: to educate and encourage self- pride and productivity. Booker T. Washington had a strong message to the former slave and recently freed blacks. It was the message that you can accomplish anything even though your surroundings may not be the best. You have the power over yourself to be the best you can be and no one but you determines your destiny.

Dr. Phillips, much like Booker T. Washington, changed the outlook of the people he led. There has been a huge change at Washington High School. He has changed our perspective for the better. Our school had a detrimental reputation of having many students who make bad choices that negatively affect the school and the entire student body.

Dr. Phillips came to make the changes that we truly needed. Instead of having students drop out, dress improperly, and make bad choices, we have programs in place now that help students realize that the choices they make today can change the direction of their lives forever. Now students are learning better manners and are being more respectful toward one another because he respects us as young adults.

Dr. Phillips has set an exemplary example towards how students should dress, speak, and act in the real world.
