When we come for the workshop, we will have an expert explain why appraisal districts were created, why we have property taxes, what your tax dollars pay for, the exemptions available to property owners and the different ways you can protest the value of your property. We also bring someone who can look up the account history so they can answer any specific questions you might have.

These workshops are especially important for property owners in communities such as Acres Homes that are starting to experience a turnaround where sales are increasing and property values are going up.

Understanding exemptions and having certain exemptions in place, could help save you money in the future.

Many times we also bring representatives of the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector to the workshops so they can explain their role in the property tax system. They will tell you how much money a homestead exemption can save you, the value of an over-65 exemption and explain what a tax deferral can do and how it could help some property owners.

In addition to talking to property owners, we are also talking to realtors, mortgage companies and title companies so that they can provide the correct information to you when you buy or sell property. We also have short videos on our web site that talk about specific subjects in simple, understandable language.

One of my goals is to help you understand the property tax system and provide various ways to answer your questions. One of those ways is through a Property Tax Workshop.

Election 2016 Demonstrates Power of “We the People”

On the night of December 16, 1773, Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty boarded three ships in the Boston harbor and threw 342 chests of tea overboard, according to History.com.

The Boston Tea Party was a political protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston on December 16, 1773.

The demonstrators, some disguised as Native Americans, in defiance of the Tea Act of May 10, 1773, destroyed an entire shipment of tea sent by the East India Company. They boarded the ships and threw the chests of tea into Boston Harbor.

The British government responded harshly and the episode escalated into the American Revolution.

This historic election sent a strong and powerful message to Washington, DC Elitists and the Mainstream News Media.

Both groups met their “Kryptonite” and it is called “We the People”.

“We the People” served notice on those who would want to take government and use it as a control mechanism to influence policies, limit information, skew facts and hide truth from hard working Americans.

The mainstream news media stepped out of bounds endorsing a candidate and them building a moat, a walled arsenal and a small fort around the Democratic candidate to protect her. They have lost credibility.

As a journalist, I have always held the position that our jobs are to report the news first without fear or favor.

In Election 2016, the statement to these Elitists and the Mainstream media that this Government and Constitution belongs to the people, not the news media or the elitists.

Here is what our constitution states: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

This election was more than a defeat for Hillary Clinton and the Democrats.

It turns out that it is a mandate against mainstream media organizations, like The New York Times, Dallas Morning News, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, CNN, NBC, ABC, USA Today and so many others so-called respected news agencies. Even big name music entertainers and Hollywood actors failed to influence or change the course of this election.

The Constitution of the United States of America is the supreme law of the United States.

Empowered with the sovereign authority of the people by the framers and the consent of the legislatures of the states, it is the source of all government powers, and also provides important limitations on the government that protect the fundamental rights of United States citizens. That includes elections too.

The news media does not and never should exist to tell people what to do or to influence the Democratic process.

The media should never tell the people its serves how to live or vote and elitists don’t know what is best for the general populace.

This should also be a warning for

the people to always learn to investigate facts, study issues and make your own informed decision.

- Do not count on mainstream news media as your sole source of information.

- Investigate and inform yourself and see what it means to you, your community and neighborhood before making any decisions.

- Measure your news outlets by their ability to be fair and objective in reporting both sides of an issues and not working hard or campaigning to tell you how to vote, live or act I feel great that the American people spoke loudly and sent a strong message to the media and elitists to take their hands off the Democratic process, step back and stay in your lane.

The American people are smart enough to make the right decision when we the news media engages in giving people all the facts and only the facts.

The truth always stands on its own. It does not have to be hidden, manufactured, adjusted or doctored in order for the American people to make decisions.

Fanning The Sanders Would Have Beaten Trump Fantasy Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author & Political Analyst

Somewhere near the top of the mountainous volumes of presidential campaign post mortem nay saying, arm chair quarterbacking, told you so blather, and so-called scientific political analysis of why Clinton lost is the assertion that Clinton rival, Bernie Sanders, would have handily beaten Trump. That’s said because Sanders seemingly had the same message as Trump; anti-Wall Street elite, rip the big banks, and globalization for the havoc its wreaked on blue collar workers, and the Rust Belt, and a thumb his nose at the party bosses and the Beltway political crowd. This supposedly made him irresistibly appealing to the angry, alienated, less educated blue collar and rural throng that powered Trump’s win. This is nothing more than bitter, after the fact wishful thinking that ignores too much.

Trump massaged, manipulated, and ultimately commandeered the media. He turned his political campaign into a three-ring traveling reality TV media circus. The result: he spent bare pennies for much of the campaign on media ink and face time while the mainstream networks crawled all over themselves to transform every Trump belch, yawn, and one line bluster into instant news, looped hour after hour. This was ratings manna from heaven and swelled the coffers of the networks.

Trump as master of the one liner absurdity was their cash cow. Sanders had no such facility or appeal. In the months that he slugged it out with Clinton, he was at best at best a media afterthought, and at worst and oddity, or mostly ignored. He would have fared no better during a general election showdown with Trump in getting the massive media attention Trump got, and remember he didn’t

have a fraudulent email scandal to draw some network chatter.

Trump muscled his way to the top of the GOP presidential contender pack with his outrageous, unabashed, racial, Muslim, immigrant and woman baiting cracks, digs and broadsides. It worked because the less educated, white male and female blue collar and rural voters didn’t simply fume at being allegedly marginalized or ignored while Democratic Party elites bowed and scraped to minorities, women and immigrants. They fumed at immigrants, Muslims and minorities for their alleged marginalization. If they were losing jobs and companies were fleeing America’s shores for China, Mexico, or anywhere else, then blame those non-white countries for it.

Sanders by contrast was a progressive Independent-Democrat which made him a politician in a party that many blue-collar workers saw as bowing and scarping to those same minorities, women, and immigrants that supposedly were snatching jobs away from suffering whites.

He reinforced their deep suspicion of racial pandering by left politicians like him when he railed against mass incarceration of blacks, spoke favorably of Black Lives Matter, and demanded sweeping criminal justice system reforms that too many conservative whites smacked of proBlack, anti-law enforcement.

It’s true Trump told the GOP establishment to take a hike, and at times hammered it in speaking to his idolatrous pro-Trump throngs.

Sanders pretty much did the same to the Democratic establishment.

But there was one major difference.

Trump was a long standing known quantity among that establishment, in the corporate business world, and with legions of Americans through his media presence. Sanders did not have that built-in advantage. Before he hit the trail against Clinton, he was an obscure senator from a small state, little known outside the senate and a circle of left radicals.

WE AIN’T GOT A DAMN THING TO LOSE WITH OUR NEW PRESIDENT!

“The presidency and the vice presidency is bigger than any of us.” This response was uttered by President Barack Obama, after Hilary Clinton conceded in her quest for presidency; whereby officially making Donald Trump the next President of the United States of America (POTUS). President Obama duly noted that he and his administration would make a smooth transition to accommodate Trump. He encouraged the American people by acknowledging that even though he and Trump have had differences, the same was so when he inherited office from former President George W. Bush. To that regard he said, “I have instructed my team to set the example that President Bush’s team set eight years ago, and work as hard as we can to make sure this is a successful transition for the president-elect.” I agree with President Obama and am also encouraging our readers and want you to know that, we ain’t got a damn thing to lose with Donald Trump as our new president.

First of all I just have to state, that I am not surprised by the outcome of this presidential election. I have been writing and talking about politicians being held accountable for the longest.

People have gotten downright tired and disgusted with trusting politicians. Although Hilary Clinton was definitely qualified to lead this country as President, there were just too many withstanding circumstances attached with her. That is, in addition to the fact that she is a politician! Her husband former President Bill Clinton, didn’t do her any favors by standing on the side-line as her cheerleader. People have not forgotten about the womanizing elements associated with him years ago. Many Black people are also still reminded of the “Three Strike” law that he signed into effect, during his administration which assured that many from the Black population were imprisoned or remained imprisoned. Then there has been

the Benghazi circle of fury that preceded her. So, again I state people are just having a hard times trusting politicians, with all of their big talk and broken promises.

Many people are still in a state of shock, in terms of believing that Donald Trump won the presidential election. But, he just spoke his mind and people respected brutal honesty. It’s one thing to do and say whatever you have to in order to win or get ahead. Yet, when a person tells you the truth no matter how you might feel about what they have to say; if it tells you nothing more at least it tells you that they are honest and have nothing to lose. Anyway, some of the things that Trump said while he was on the battleground seeking the seat of presidency weren’t too far from the truth. Now, I didn’t like nor approve of the rhetoric that he created surrounding President Obama’s birth certificate. But we must remember that he also said a lot of other things about a lot of other people as well.

During many debates or through other avenues, he said many things about Hilary Clinton.

He talked about the former First Lady Barbara Bush and he called Ted Cruz wife “ugly”. The man just spoke his mind and called, “a spade a spade”, and people respected him for it. But the bottom line is that he is our president and we have to respect him. I always talk and write about the word “respect”. And I am just a strong believer that we ain’t got a damn thing to lose with him. Just look at history, even though the Black man was in the White House, they did everything that they could to clip his wings. So now that we have a White man back in the White House, what could we have to lose?

So here we are with Donald Trump in line as the next, Commander-in-Chief. His own party (Republican) doesn’t even like him but they are going to have to figure out how to work with him. At this point, both the

Democrats and Republicans will now have to try to figure out how to work with him. A person has to know history in order to understand what went on this election. A lot of White men have always had a problem with women in superior positions. But it’s no surprise that he won. As a matter of fact, I told my wife that he was going to win.

It was one thing for them to let Obama slip through the cracks, but they certainly were not about to allow Hilary to do the same thing.

At the end of the day it all boils down to, “Respect”! I believe when a person goes out of their way to achieve a certain position that they should be guaranteed at least a certain level of “Respect”.

Especially in a position as important as the POTUS! Now that the shoe is back on the right foot as it relates to this country, my sentiments will remain the same. Contrary to how anyone feels about the new POTUS. The fact remains that he should be respected. I mentioned a couple of editorials ago, that as long as a person upholds their responsibility and do what they are supposed to do I will support them. Hell, even Hilary showed her humility with the colors that she wore; she wore the color purple which is a representation of Blue and Red uniting (Democrat and Republican). With that being stated, We MUST Understand that we don’t have a damn thing to lose with our new president!

We live in food deserts and our connection to these places are disappearing. Have we allowed “gentrification” to change our landscape economically, politically, demographically, and culturally. HOUSTON - Once considered the South’s largest unincorporated Black community, Acres Homes remains one of the most notable of historical Black communities in remaining in Houston and Harris County.

It was developed around the time of World War I when landholders began selling off home sites in plots big enough to allow small gardens and maintain chickens or farm animals. The town derived its name from the fact that land was sold by the acre and not by the lot, according to the Texas State Historical Association. Acres Homes is located south of Aldine and ten miles northwest of downtown Houston in Harris County. It’s first settlers came from rural areas, attracted by the community’s inexpensive land, low taxes, and the absence of city building standards.

Preserving the rich African-American history and culture that helped to shaped places like Acres Homes and other communities of color is what Preserving Communities of Color Conference is all about.

This year, the event is being held in Houston from November 16th to November 19th, according to PCOCC Media Representative Tanya Debose.

PURPOSE

The Preserving Communities of Color Conference will bring together people interested in prioritizing historic preservation in communities of color and is based on the premise that historic preservation is a component of revitalization.

It’s main agenda is influenced by how we engage our history and continue to build legacies that preserve communities of color.

The aim of this event is to create a sustainable agenda for preserving places that embody the African-American experience of place, culture and heritage in America.

It is also an opportunity for other communities to join us and learn the steps being taken toward preserving a more diverse American history.

Many African-Americans Representatives from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Black Mayors, business leaders, descendents, planners, historians, ministers, educators and others will gather to strategize and support efforts to recognize and preserve Houston’s communities of color.

The multi-venue event features four days of engaging activities including workshops, round tables, master classes, tours and power talks. The conference will also be a mix of local, national and inter-

national experts sharing their knowledge and experience.

Dubose said the conference is open to everyone who believes in creating inclusive communities that are healthy, safe, culturally enriched and filled with affordable diverse housing options and economic opportunities for everyone.

INTEREST IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN PRESERVATION COMMUNITIES SURGING Already Across America, people are working to preserve the rich history and culture of African-American historic places. Many are telling the stories and sharing history that has rarely been told.

“Without a plan, the community will perish,” PCOCC Media Representative Tanya Debose stated. “This is our opportunity to amplify voices and bring them under one roof to create a platform for forward movement.”

“The goal is to transform our historic communities into vibrant inclusive communities and cultural centers,” she said.

BLACK TOWNS AND SETTLEMENTS After the Civil War, African-Americans left the plantations and settled in places where they established their own communities even

incorporating some into independent, self governed municipalities. These early pioneers were the first African American “placemakers” in America. Many places were setup in a township format with everything they needed including churches, schools, stores and homes.

In every state across America, Blacks settled themselves into clusters of freedmen sometimes referred to as colonies, settlements and towns. It is estimated that more than 1200 places were settled by Blacks in settlements, enclaves, and towns were established in every state in the lower forty eight contiguous United States between the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Of those, more than 500 settlements were established with physical elements and cultural institutions in a town format. Only 50 to 60 Black towns were legally incorporated in nineteen states between 1865 and 1915.

Debose said that today, black historical communities are at a pivotal point where something must be done to preserve what’s left of our past.

“We must also renew our communities so that the existing residents are not displaced,” she added. “ Finally, we must transform these communities into thriving inclusive places and cultural destinations drawing from the collective strength of our ancestors and continue the legacies they started by preserving those important places that embody our identity, history and heritage.”

Black history experts indicate that telling our own stories is important to present a complete story of America that is enriched and reflect the contributions of all Americans, even people of color.

Lone Star College-Victory Center Peers Supporting Peers

By Marshana Prudhomme Sometimes it is easier to discuss personal challenges with one’s own peers. So out of consideration for students having difficulties with sharing personal issues, the Hogg Foundation of Mental Health created Transitional Age Youth (TAY), a grant which funds the Peer Wellness Marshana Prudhomme Specialists program. This program allows young adults to help their peers.

“It’s all about dusting yourself off and getting back up, and a sense of understanding to know that someone else went through this. If they can overcome the situation you can too!”

A Peer Wellness Specialist (PWS) is a young person between the ages of 15-24 who has overcome all types of obstacles, and now helps other young people overcome their obstacles. Pedro Cavazos is the Peer Wellness Specialist and TAY Recovery Coach who helps students at LSC-Victory Center with career development, life and skills training and supportive guidance and counseling. PWS operates through the non-profit advocacy group, Communities in Schools of Houston (CIS) at LSC-Victory Center. PWS serves as a support group to the campus.

“The impact from these groups should give our students a sense of

hope and understanding, hope for them to know that it’s okay to fall down,” CIS campus Mental Health Specialist Amanda Howard explains. “It’s all about dusting yourself off and getting back up, and a sense of understanding to know that someone else went through this. If they can overcome the situation you can too!”

Howard, an LPC-S Mental Health Specialist-PT at the LSCVictory Center, says CIS meets with the students every other week “to discuss what’s going on with them at the moment.” Howard first inquires of students what they would like to know and learn, and with that information the groups or workshops are formed.

CIS helps students who have various challenges, whether mental health awareness, assistance with housing, personal goals or academic achievement. As for PWS student leaders, Howard says they are not exactly assigned. “It’s more of an organic process. A student can have an idea for a group or workshop, but he or she doesn’t have to lead. That’s when another student can help lead that idea to other students,” she says.

Serving Our World Through Public Achievement

By Lissette Carrera A relatively large group of high school seniors and college students have united in order to practice and foster democracy.

Public Achievement, a program taught by LSCVictory Center professor Christopher Phlegar, has sparked an interest in Lissette Carrera students to serve. Students are made to think critically about all the emerging issues that are important to them and their community.

The students get the option to choose which issues truly spark a fire in them. The issues discussed at meetings range from environmental pollution to college rape culture. Meetings are held every Friday and require the active participation of everyone

involved. Through the power of Public Achievement, students are learning how to serve while putting democracy into action.

Among the many groups, there is one called, “The Green League.” It is composed of four high school seniors and one traditional LSC-Victory Center student. The group’s main concern is environmental pollution and for the past couple of meetings, they have been actively discussing major issues the earth is facing, such as global warming, which some believe to be a myth.

Through the motivation and dedication of Victoria Basulto, a high school senior, the group has learned how to further appreciate the earth.

Also, “The Green League,” has managed to make smart decisions and detailed plans, while including everyone’s opinion.

“Public Achievement has opened my eyes to actually view the world in a deeper way. Through all the issues we have been facing, I realized that we all have to do our part in conserving the earth,” Xavier Bishop, president of Brother for Brother said. “We have to make a difference, especially since it only takes one step at a time.”

PRESERVATION EFFORT HISTORY/ BACKGROUND It all started in 2013, when the mayors of five of America’s most representative historic Black towns and settlements (Grambling, LA; Mound Bayou, MS; Eatonville, FL; Hobson City, AL; Tuskegee, AL) began to discuss ways to individually and collectively preserve and promote the heritage and culture of their communities.

The informal discussions evolved into a series of structured conference calls in April of 2014 and those calls produced a series of strategic actions: • The mayors agreed to participate in exchange visits to each town.

HOUSTON – Pastor Joshua T. Scott M.CD. and Lady Veronique Scott J.D. has been labeled as, “true believers of Christ, called to inspire the next generation to stay faithful in their religious belief and love for God.” Pastor Scott is a graduate of Morehouse College and Prairie View A&M University where he earned a Master’s degree in Community Development.

His wife, Lady Veronique graduated from The University of Texas at Austin and Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law. Collectively, this dynamic duo has merged their expertise, knowledge and passion for advancing the body of Christ in a venture to inspire the youth of the African-American community to become more engaged with the scripture. As a result, they have created the Jo-Jo’s Bible Adventures Series to empower youth of all races and cultures to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

In a recent interview with Pastor Scott, he explained their vision and reasoning for creating a book that depicts melanin characters. He said, “One of the main reasons that we decided to write this book is because, we found that a lot of generations are not connecting with religion, as we once knew it.” He continued, “Our young people are not excited and don’t have the same passion about church, the way we did when we were growing up.”

It has been said that in order to address an issue, one must first identify the root of the issue. As such, the Scott’s believe that one of the main reasons why the level of excitement and passion has been subsided in the world of faith as it relates to the African-American youth culture is because many cannot see themselves in the scripture. Pastor Scott revealed that, “When you visit many book stores, you are not going to see a lot of characters of color.” Therefore their credence suggests that, “Once a child is able to see characters like themselves, they can connect and identify with them better.” It is their desire that by children seeing characters like themselves, it will arouse a renewed interest in the scripture. Pastor Scott expressed that, “If a child can see something that shows them that this is my heritage and history of where I come from; and if God created Adam and Eve and all these other people that look like me… Then I know he can work a miracle in my life – so that was our concept in formatting Jo-Jo’s Bible Adventures.”

Background Insight on Jo-Jo’s Bible Adventures Jo-Jo’s Bible Adventures is compiled through the journey of 10-year-old, Jonathan and his 7-year-old sister, Jolie.

Jonathan is a really good big brother, whose main objective is to protect and watch over his younger sister. He strives to ensure that Jolie understands the Bible and knows how to pray. As a big brother, he exemplifies the role of a guide to detour his sister away from trouble. It is a Christian book which covers, Genesis to Exodus in several series including the stories of: Adam and Eve, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and Moses and the Children of Israel as they exit out of the land of Egypt. Other books in the series are: Jo-Jo’s Bible Camp Adventures and Jo-Jo’s Easter Adventures.

Jo-Jo’s Christmas Adventures is the next book in the series that will be debuting on November 25. Jo-Jo’s Christmas Adventures will be in the form of a coloring/activity book. The book will serve to tell the story of the birth of Jesus. In it, children will have the option to create their own idea through color of the way that they envision characters of the Bible exemplified. In addition to Jo-Jo’s Bible Adventures Series, there are T-shirts, calendars, puzzles, buckets and mugs available for purchase. All items are decorated with representations of children of color.

In regards to advice to the Black community, Pastor Scott said, “Love yourself, love the skin that you’re in and appreciate and celebrate those who are around you. Our history has to be our history. It can’t be tied or connected to the history we’ve been taught. We have to learn our own history. Every culture is taught their own history. But, we leave Black history up to the White school system. We turned ourselves over to that when we decided to be integrated.

When we forced integration on ourselves, we washed our history away.

So now it’s easy for people to say that slavery wasn’t really slavery…. It was just some people who wanted to be indentured servants. But it is important for us to embrace our heritage and learn to love ourselves.”

Lane, TSU Board Chairman Derrick Mitchell, HCC Board of Trustees Chair Adriana Tamez, Ed.D., HCC Chancellor Cesar Maldonado, Ph.D., P.E., and HCC Trustee and twotime TSU alumna Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, Ed.D. were among the administrators in attendance.

“We are excited to partner with HCCS and strengthen the bonds of higher education between the campuses,” President Lane said.

“This agreement allows us to develop programs that will enhance the educational experience of students attending both Houston Community College and Texas Southern. We are going to work in an aggressive manner and ensure that interested students know how to get from the community college system into a direct track that ends with a bachelor’s degree.”

The agreement recognizes both institutions as active educational partners committed to providing greater educational opportunities and services for students.

Benefits to students will include scholarships, joint admission, and conditional admittance to TSU’s Honors College. Data sharing will contribute to the maintenance and efficiency of transfers, and promote effective cooperation between the two institutions. HCC will accept reverse transfer credits from TSU students who leave college prior to completion of their baccalaureate degree in order to complete the requirements for an HCC associate degree.

“This is the beginning of a great relationship for our students here at HCC,” Chancellor Maldonado said. “The enrollment and registration process will be taken care of when our students choose to transfer to TSU. All they have to do is show up to class. This is a great partnership that will not only save money for students, but will increase their success rates.”

Kirk Whalum returns for new radio show & annual Gospel concert Grammy Award-winning jazz saxophonist and gospel artist Kirk Whalum is set to begin a show on Texas Southern University’s iconic station, KTSU 90.9 FM. The Kirk Whalum Show will premiere November 23 and the live, two-hour show will air every Wednesday at 5 p.m. The program will be filled with music, talk and inspiration. Whalum graduated from Texas Southern in 1982 with a degree in music.

Whalum is an ordained minister and the recipient of numerous awards for musical excellence. He received two Stellar Awards (Gospel music’s highest honor), three Dove Award nominations and an NAACP Image Award nomination. A 12-time Grammy nominee, Whalum won his first award in 2011 for Best Gospel Song, It’s What I Do – featuring Lalah Hathaway, in collaboration with lifelong friend and songwriter, Jerry Peters.

His big, rich tenor sax sound is unmistakable – Whalum’s soaring solo is heard on Whitney Houston’s megahit, I Will Always Love You. He is an in-demand session player for top artists such as Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and many others. He is a member of the popular soul/jazz group, BWB, which features Whalum with Rick Braun on trumpet and Norman Brown on guitar.

Whalum’s holiday extravaganza “A Gospel According to Jazz” Christmas concert returns to Texas Southern University, December 2, featuring renown jazz keyboardist and composer Keiko Matsui, and Norman Brown along with singer/song writer Shelea, John Stoddart and Kevin Whalum. Honorable Intentions: The Obama Legacy

If more people really knew the true Obama legacy, more people would not see the need to take our country back from the initiatives and policies that have benefitted our country so within the last eight years.

This election year has been a fascinating one especially for younger and future voters. With the just as many people feeling strongly for one candidate as others are against another, the race to succeed the forty fourth president of the United States of America has created a lot of interest in our political system. The background of Obama presidency is just as important as his time and triumphs in office. We should not forget who George W. Bush divided our country and put into place laws that made surviving hard for middle class families. Obama took office during a time when people were tired of Republican policies and how those policies did not put the country on the right path. In fact, the country was headed for a serious depression when George Bush left office. Since that time, Obama has had to make many difficulty choices. He had to make plans that many people in Congress did not agree with. He came along when people were looking for change. Just what does he leave behind? How do people perceive his accomplishments? Do people actually know what those accomplishments are? I believe, no. There are so many extreme negative views about the president that flood cable news networks, the internet, and talk and satellite radio that his milestones tend to get lost in the shuffle or misunderstood or purposefully buried. In the age of bold arrogance and self-boasting, there is not a place for modesty in politics.

As he steps aside and prepares for life away from the round table, a new generation of young people who can barely remember January 20, 2009, when President Obama was inaugurated for his first term, they need to know that the first African American president of our great union made much progress to make life better for the average families. A few of his most notable “wins” are as follows: *Passed the Economic Stimulus which allotted more than 787 billion dollars into the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which lowered unemployment and created more than three million in the private sector jobs. *Ended the War on Iraq *Eliminated Osama bin Laden *Bailed out the Bank and Auto Industries when a time that their failure would have posed considerable threat to the overall economy. *Passed Credit Card Reform that made it difficult for companies to arbitrarily raise rates and created a more fair relationship between provider and consumer. *Passed the Affordable Healthcare Act that allowed millions of Americans to finally get healthcare. *Strengthen relations with Cuba for the first time in more than fifty four years Even considering that this is the short list, he was able to accomplish this and much more without the scandal that we are so accustomed to from those in power or leadership. As we say farewell to President Obama, we do not say goodbye to his example of excellence and commitment to integrity and honor. We thank him for his legacy and service.

What is At Stake?

With all of the talk about the 2016 presidential race, the students of Washington are listening and thinking about the outcome of the election. Mixed emotions that range from excitement, passion, disgust and great anticipation have tied to the debates and discussions that can be had just about anywhere.

Government classrooms have not been the only places where opinions have been ablaze. The drama of the debates have drawn many teenagers who normally are disconnected from politics. Most students have felt that the concerns and the positions the candidates share are the worries of parents and other adults and that they, in fact, had a few more years before they needed to engage in such discussions.

They see now how close to home the issues are and the importance of paying attention. Their time for action may not be this particular election since many fall just short of the voting age, but they realize that the process and results are real. For many students, especially those that are sixteen and seventeen year olds, the next president will make the important decisions concerning taxes, the cost of tuition, healthcare and immigration. These are the issues that will affect them as they become young adults and opinions are just as bold and the candidates. According to my unofficial poll of those around me including both my peers and family, there is overwhelming support of Hilary Clinton. Celebrities from the music and movie industries have come out to endorse her in

recent weeks. Will this make a difference? Will this matter to undecided, Hispanic, African American, women and younger voters? Recent CNN and major broadcast polls have reported that Clinton has consistently held a slight but steady lead over Trump.

For those who have some of the same concerns as I do, we endorse the fact that, as President Obama exclaimed, “Justice that is on the ballot, tolerance is on the ballot and hope is on the ballot…” Although the race is close, and the possibility of our chosen candidate fails to take office, one positive result of all of the negative ideals that have been spewed from these campaigns is that young people, the next generation is taking note and getting ready to action in our political system. Some teenagers have seen with a vivid eye how electrifying but divisive American politics can be. They have been a witness to how the people can lead and send the first African American President into the White House but how a Congress can thwart progress in the name of partisan politics.

They have had a front row seat to how the system works but can stall out when inclusion and consideration for your fellow man do not take center stage when the important issues are at stake. With high hopes, Hilary Clinton looks forward to first time, young voters making their way to the polls, but the true victory is when people mobilize for a cause and learn to work together to make change through our political system. The more people who engage, the more, we the people, win.

Being and Staying Unconquered

There is a famous poem by a Latin poet, William Henley, that stirs the hearts of anyone who is determined to succeed in life. It sings a song of endurance in the face of difficult times. The poem reads below: INVICTUS Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.

Around the halls of Washington High during this second grading period, for some, this is a time of endurance, determination and responsibility. The romance of summer now long gone, and coasting through classes that are reviewing what I already know has come to an end. The second grading period has become a test of determination and the will of students to do whatever it takes to keep their grades good while having fun. Even though the poem describes the hard times a soldier faces as he goes up against a true enemy or battle, I think most students can be inspired about the way he views what he must do. He could have taken the perspective that what lies ahead is too hard and find ways to get out of what is expected - like a few of my friends do on a regular basis. Instead of going to tutorials, doing make up work or asking for extra credit work to bring up a grade, many students just chalk up the entire year, give up and decide to take the class in summer school. Although that option is available to us, is it the best option? Is it the option that shows that we are unconquerable and undefeated? It is not and what will we do the next time a challenge comes our way?
