Loretta Devine

Loretta Devine was born on August 21, 1949 in Houston, Texas. Her mother, Eunice O’Neal (née Toliver), was a beautician, and her father, James Devine, worked as a laborer.

She grew up in the Acres Homes area of Houston where her mom was a single mom to six children. She was very active on the pep squad, and performed in talent shows at George Washington Carver High School.

In 1971, Devine graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Drama. In 1976, she received a Master of Fine Arts in Theater from Brandeis University.

Devine was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha the Epsilon Lambda Chapter.

Loretta Devine pursued a career in acting, eventually becoming a force on Broadway and having her big break with the hit musical Dreamgirls. She eventually focused almost solely on big and small screen work, thus becoming one of the most prolific actresses in the business, starring in a huge array of projects that include series like A Different World, Boston Public, State of Georgia and The Carmichael Show as well as films like Waiting to Exhale, The Preacher's Wife, Crash, For Colored Girls and Jumping the Broom.

Now Is The Time For Heroes Attorney At Law

wo popular movies currently are being screened in cinemas across the nation.

Both deal with struggle, courage and hope.

The first, "The Darkest Hour," dramatizes Winston Churchill’s first days as Britain’s prime minister in the spring of 1940. His nation was at war with Nazi Germany and most of Britain’s army was surrounded and trapped at Dunkirk, a section of beach along the French coast of the English Channel.

Churchill's opponents and supporters alike urged him to make peace with the Germans and capitulate to Hitler's demand that England withdraw from the war in Europe. But in a show of extraordinary courage, Churchill resisted the temptation to “play it safe."

Instead, he found a way to save his army and went on to become a celebrated hero of the war.

"The Post" is the second film currently enjoying acclaim.

It follows the publisher of the Washington Post, Katherine Graham, during the days that she stood up to a bullying U.S. President Richard Nixon and published the classified "Pentagon Papers," exposing the government’s lies behind the Vietnam War. The decision to print the secret government documents could have spelled ruin for the paper and Graham herself, but nevertheless, she persisted. When the Pentagon Papers were published, public opinion against the Vietnam War rose to such a pitch that America ultimately had to withdraw from the conflict.

What makes both these films so popular is that people admire heroes who show courage in the

face of daunting odds. But heroes such as these are hard to find today. Corporations and big money interests have bought the hearts and souls of most of our politicians and media executives. America is starved for heroic action. But if we want to see the type of heroism we crave, we must sit in a darkened room and watch it project onto a screen in a two-hour fictional narrative. "The Darkest Hour" and "The Post" are heroic escape fantasies for Americans today, just as the glittering Hollywood extravaganzas of the 1930s were fantasies that helped Americans escape the dreariness of the Great Depression.

I am not saying that we have no heroes, but we do not have enough. There are too few heroes in our legislative bodies in Washington D.C. and in our state capitals. Too many elected officials spend more time trying to get re-elected than doing right by the people they are sworn to serve.

Too many media personalities and executives are more interested in ratings than speaking truth to power.

The everyday working man and woman who struggle to keep their families fed, clothed and properly cared for are real heroes,

The first thing I think of every time I see my paycheck is the false information that was presented to Texans to “sell us” on the Texas Lottery. I distinctly remember hearing that the vast majority of the money generated from the Texas Lottery would be allocated for education. Now each payday I ask myself, “Where is all of this money?” and I’m convinced that it has been misallocated.

Sadly, I feel the same way about two large school districts in Houston – Houston Independent School District (HISD) and Aldine Independent School District (AISD) – because recently both are crying broke.

HISD’s superintendent, Richard Carranza, has abandoned his district in the face of adversity to head New York City’s school system. HISD is currently holding town hall meetings to discuss its budget issues and is considering cutting numerous educator jobs as well as bus routes for its

but they are betrayed by selfish national leaders who refuse to put their shoulders to the wheel to bring about changes for the better.

We should not look for leadership from politicians and media celebrities who do nothing but tout their own non-existent accomplishments. Leaders who have neither the will nor the ability to take heroic action when needed do nothing more than squander the public trust.

We, the governed, must learn to be critical of our government if we are to improve our lives. We must become “critical thinkers.”

We must become thoughtful, logical and informed and we must consider the source of our information and disregard that which is not credible or is meant to manipulate us. We should not accept old saws such as "All politicians lie."

We must not accept being lied to by those in power, nor should we accept liars as our leaders. Liars must be voted out of office if they are elected in the first place.

As consumers of information, we must learn to be critical of what we are told in print and over the airwaves. We must use our common sense when listening to the news and reading newspapers.

During the civil rights era, many major newspapers in the South lied

in their reporting on the conduct of demonstrators and marchers. They lied, even more, when they tried to hide violent hateful responses to those demonstrations by local White bigots. Those newspapers lied because it suited their racist agendas to do so. During that time, we had to refute those lies and expose them for what they were.

Today, it suits the agendas of many media outlets to lie in glowing terms about a president who is himself a despicable liar. To make matters worse, there are foreign antagonists flooding American social media with misinformation.

We must refute these new lies and not let them poison our nation unchallenged.

To do this, we not only must be critical thinkers, but we must become the heroes that we are looking for.

It will not be easy to bring about change at a time when simply surviving is difficult to manage. We live under a hostile federal government as well as many hostile state governments.

But we have been through worse.

As a people, we have survived much worse and we have forged ahead.

AISD received an $800 million bond referendum within the last four years. Yet, they too are considering budget cuts that would adversely impact teachers and students. On top of that both the superintendent, Wanda Bamberg, and the deputy superintendent, Archie Blanson, have announced their resignations at the end of the 2017-2018 year.

Something is definitely amiss, and taxpayers should be asking questions. An independent audit of both of these districts seems warranted.

These districts should be held accountable in the same manner in which they hold their administrators and educators accountable for student success.

It’s time to follow the dollar.

Modern Day Phones: A Tool for Freedom The Standard View Billy “Hollywood” Groves

M

odern day phones are the reason the world is seeing the most devastating crimes being committed against African Americans these days.

Someone had a modern day phone with a camera and used video recording to film different crimes involving African Americans. I really doubt if the police version of what really happened would have been the true version of what the world saw through television, radio, newspapers, via internet and other media outlets.

“The truth will set you free”, is definitely a saying that has been proven to be true and verified through the use of modern day phones. As we move forward with this concept, we can and must use our phone cameras “to shine the light” and tell the truth.

God will always bring a plan to his people that will allow them to stand up and defeat the enemy confronting them. In the modern day crisis that African Americans are facing these days, our phone cameras have become very powerful tools. I know that there are some negative effects of modern day phone usage that we must work out, but overall the good far outweigh the bad.

However, if you look at it, these modern day phones are the tools available to us right now. They can be used to help us bring justice for our people who have been taken advantage of and violated by corrupt people in positions of authority, including our law enforcement officers. We know that many of these crooked people in positions of power have benefited from the

practice of “ throwing a rock and hiding their hands”. I remember years ago when a lot of our Texas lawmen, kept guns with them that they got from “suspicious sources” and used them as “throw down weapons”. The “throw down gun” was used as a fake piece of evidence by an “alleged Black shooter” that the lawmen could use as justification for murdering the offender.

If there had been cameras in the hands of people who witnessed these actual crimes and the true incident had been filmed, then the outcome of those cases would have been totally different. It would be with no camera evidence against the words of the guilty officers.

In this era of racism and bigotry, you probably never will hear people in positions of power advising people to keep their cameras and use them when there are altercations with police. Just like the “underground railroad” was used to help Black slaves escape to freedom, modern day phones are one of the tools available these days that will help us escape false attacks by crooked law enforcement.

It is important that the leadership of our Black communities continue to emphasize the use of modern day phones. We all have heard the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child” but we need to know that it also takes a village to protect them and the adults around them.

As Black people in America, we should know that there are some problems that we are having, that just filming those problems “will not” change the situation, but there are many serious racial law breaking problems that those cameras will solve by just filming them.

Negroes Made in America

n January 29, 2016 from The White House Office of the Press Secretary, former President Barack Obama addressed the need to embrace Black History month. He said, “Our responsibility as citizens is to address the inequalities and injustices that linger, and we must secure our birthright freedoms for all people…

Let us reflect on the sacrifices and contributions made by generations of African Americans, and let us resolve to continue our march toward a day when every person knows the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

During this delivery, the former president did not just limit the scope of celebrating Black history month to the month of February alone and I’m sure for good reason.

Quite naturally he understands the grave nature of embracing Black history within American history contininously. So I have a problem with many of these Negroes made in America. It appears that since Black history month is over with, some of these Negroes made in America have only limited themselves to celebrating Black history just during the month of February.

After that, many of them just go back to being labeled, “other”. I have a serious concern with this issue.

We MUST Understand that even though everyone in America may not understand the significance of Black history, it is important that African-Americans understand its place. If it were not for the inclusion of Black folks becoming a part of this nation, there are many inventions, movements, rights, ideas, ordinances and a good many of other elements that would not exist today. Not long ago, I wrote a piece explaining to our readers that, “Black History is America’s History.”

The presence of African-

Americans in this nation is just as important as the representation of White folks. It was slaves who helped to build and establish this nation. During Black history month, we explained that according to the one-drop rule there has been a long-line of Black presidents that have served as Commanderin-Chief of this nation. Therefore, we have to understand that we also helped to pioneer, establish and govern this country as a whole, as well.

Yet, here we are in the year 2018, and times have shown that the further we Africans living in America have gotten away from the days of: slavery, Jim Crow laws, segregation and the Civil Rights Movement; many of us have gotten further away from our true heritage. Marcus Garvey once said that, “people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”

This thought is so true, because when a person does not know where they come from it is hard to see where you going. We MUST Understand that the month of February has been a designated month for African-Americans to embrace our culture and heritage.

But, when it comes to talking about who I am and where I come from, I believe that it is a year-round story, because I don’t just survive and live during the month of February only.

Origin of Black History Month According to www.history. com, Black History month was initiated in 1915 after the abolishment of slavery. The source offers a brief history of its origin which is revealed in the following statements. In September of that year, “the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African descent. Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures.”

Continuing, the site informs that, “In the decades that followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Negro History Week. By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the civil rights movement and a growing awareness of Black identity, Negro History Week had evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses.

President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to ‘seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.’”

Concluding, at AfricanAmerican News&Issues, we have been adopted the idea that Black History is 24/7/365. My wife and I have always felt that knowing and understanding where we as a people come from, has a lot to do with who we are and who we will become.

HOUSTON - I John 3:17 poses a question to those who profess a belief in the Lord Jesus Christ - “whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?”

While it is true that there are many amongst us that have a “zeal” of God, the truth is that not every one of us subscribes to the greatest commission that Christ left on record for his disciples – that we love one another.

members, who are called Vincentians, is to follow Christ through service to those in need.

St. Vincent de Paul serves those in need regardless of creed, ethnic, social background, health, gender or political affiliation.

Most Catholic churches have a St. Vincent de Paul Conference. The society is compiled of Vincentians which are volunteers, who imitate Christ through service to those in need and bears witness to his compassionate and liberating love.

Members show their commitment through person-to-person contact and no work of charity is foreign to the society, it includes: any form of help that people are suffering from whether poverty, human dignity and personal integrity in all its dimensions.

Willie French Jr. and the late Joseph Strauss, along with several other members helped pioneer St. Monica’s Food Pantry. Past presidents include: Willie French, Joseph Strauss, LouAnn Richard, the late Joyce Brantley and Glenn Gonzales.

Upon establishment volunteers operated out of a 10x10 room in the back of the church. Under the leadership of Joyce Brantley, the pantry moved to a 10x20 room in the church hall, where they worked out of for nearly 20-years.

Once former President Glenn Gonzales assumed leadership, he noticed after doing “home visits”, that there was a dire need for a larger space to house more food,

While there, President Gonzales explained the significance of St. Monica’s scope and stressed the need for an adequate amount of space to accommodate the needs of a growing demand amongst residents.

From this experience, the organization was blessed with a substantial grant from the City of Houston, which enabled them to build the current facility that the pantry operates out of. The Food Pantry has a dual purpose. Not only does the building operates as a Food Pantry, it also serves as a disaster relief center during times of major disasters within our city.

President Jacquelyn Strauss-Shannon

Shannon was born in Houston and reared between the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens communities. Raised as a devout Catholic, much of her education was performed at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School. Ultimately, she graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School, and later studied at Texas Southern University and Durham Business College.

During her professional life, she worked in Customer Service, Outside Sales and Communications departments at several companies including: Southwestern Bell-AT&T, AT&T, DHL and Houston Cellular. She was also worked as a Physical Therapist Assistant at Herman Hospital. After retiring in 2009, she began volunteering full-time with the Society of St. Vincent De Paul.

Shadowing in the footsteps of her father and uncle Ivory and Joseph Strauss respectively, she began serving at the St. Monica Food Pantry. Today, Shannon remains committed to poor and needy families throughout Houston in her role as President.

She has been a part of the Catholic faith for 71-years and attends Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church. Shannon is married to her husband, Vernice. Together they have two daughters, Natasha (Keith) and Surrenda (Edward), five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Shannon maintains that she has long been a helper of humanity and enjoys doing it. She said, “I just enjoy serving God and helping people, the Lord has blessed me so much in listening to their stories and trying to get them back on the right track.” She continued, “You have to have that spirit to go out and serve people.

Celebrating 125 Years

Booker T. Washington Junior- Senior High School has become 125 years old this year, 2018. First known as Colored High, it was established in 1892 and was occupied in the fall of 1893. The first principal from 1893-1912 of “Colored High” was the late Charles Atherton, for whom one of our HISD elementary schools is named.

It was the first high school to be established for our people in the city of Houston.

It was built on the comer of West Dallas and Frederick Streets, fifty-seven years after the founding of Houston by the Allen Brothers.

The first graduate of our school was the late Wright Munger, who finished the prescribed course of study in 1896. The following year (1897) it was a high total of 14 graduates. The student enrollment outgrew the original building by the year 1927, and it became necessary to rehabilitate and enlarge the educational plant. The school was rebuilt at the same site and named “Booker T. Washington Jr.-Senior High School” in honor of the late Booker T. Washington (18561915), famed educator, founder of Tuskeegee Institute and author of Up from Slavery and My Larger Education. Mr. William E. Miller was named principal at this time when the school was renamed. Naturally, a newly named school had to develop its peculiar identity symbols.

Miss Virginia B. Miller, an English teacher, whom no Washington student during these years will ever forget, selected ‘Wisdom” as one of the school’s mottos: “Wisdom is the principle thing; therefore, get wisdom and with all thy getting, get understanding.” The current motto of Booker T. Washington is “Seek wisdom.” The colors, ‘’blue and gold” were chosen by Mrs. Marjorie Teal, physical education teacher, and Mrs. Freddie Lights Kemp, music teacher. “Royal Blue” represents Stateliness and Loyalty, and “Gold” represents A Thing of Great Value or Goodness.

The Golden Eagle was chosen as the school’s mascot because it was the mightiest, most powerful and sharp-visioned bird that

soared through the air.

The school song was written by accomplished poet, orator and English teacher, Mrs. Mary E.B. Isaacs, pinning the very stirring words, and Mr. J. Will Jones, the (then) music supervisor of all Black schools, furnishing the rol­licking rhythmic musical setting. These words will always linger in the memories of all Washington students: “Just like a Mighty Eagle flying Tow-er-ing O’er this fellow’s flight (fellow’s flight) So, will we, too, thy sons and daughters Soar O’er wrong to fields of right.”

On January 26, 1959, with Mr. Arthur L. Huckaby serving as principal, Booker T. Washington moved into its present location, 119 East 39th Street at Yale.

In September 1965, Mr. F.D. Wesley began his administration. Under his most capable and progressive leadership many innovations have been developed and initiated so that the students enjoy a well-balanced academic and extracurricular activity program - and they excel in both. This wide-range developmental activity program has been planned for the students because Principal Wesley believes that the busy student is a happy and productive one - and that time must be devoted to instruct him in social and moral graces; and also much attention has been given to the physical well-being of the students.

Sylvester Turner-Houston Mayor ; Carmen Lenoir Hanks Howard; Hon. Jarvis Johnson- State Representative

HOUSTON-Carmen was born December 21, 1932 to Virginia and Thaddeus Hanks Sr. in Houston Texas. Her family moved to Chicago, Illinois when she was just an infant.

At age 15, Carmen lost her mother to an illness. She was raised by her grandmother who was known as Grams. She attended Wendell Phillips High School where shebecame a cheerleader in her sophomore year. She graduated in 1951, and shortly after that she married Alex. Howard Jr. Carmen has three children; Stephen, Marsha, and Jeffery.

After separating from her husband she raised her children on the south side of Chicago in a place called Algeld Gardens. She was a hard working mother, but she always had time to spend with her children. She was loved by all of her children's friends and all the neighbors. She believed in taking her children as well as the neighbor's children to places of culture so they would learn more about the world. She was known as the neighborhood mom.

In 1971, Carmen ventured out and moved to West Springfield, Massachusetts where she lived for one year, from there she decided she would return to her birth place Houston, where most of her family lived. She has four brothers, Thaddeus Jr., and Leon who are deceased. Her two living brothers are Wendell and Dennis. She has three sisters Deborah, Denise, and Lasonya She has 11 grandchil-

dren, ·and 7 great grandchildren which all call her grannyma.

Shortly after her move to Houston she got a job at JC Penny in the cash office where she worked for several years, from there she worked for First City National Bank in customer service up until her retirement. She joined Starlight Missionary Baptist Church in 1973 and was baptized by the late Rev. U.S. Turney. She became an active and dedicated member. She loves her church and continues to grow stronger in her faith under the leadership of our current pastor Rev. Clifford B. Meachum Jr. She is the senior member of the choir, the recording secretary of the bereavement committee, a member of the mission, and regularly attends Sunday school and bible study. She is a very caring, loving, and gifted person, some of which is seen through her spiritual poetry writings entitled Shared thoughts and feelings. Her poems are very special to family and friends, They all end with a scripture and in small print, Carmen Howard and the Holy Spirit in Me! Our Journey begun on March 1,2018 with 4 students participating in the Calf Scramble. BTW- FFA program had a very successful night because three out of four of our students caught a calf; Ja'Mia Lewis, Luis Rivera, and Damion Jones.

Each student that caught a calf receives a $1,750 sponsorship to purchase a steer or heifer for next years Livestock Show. Two days later, another student named Jonah Brown also caught a calf. He did great!

Jonah was 2 seconds away from winning the first catch belt buckle, but he too will receive a sponsorship.

Jonah didn't have long to celebrate because he and our FFA President Inayah Johnson, had to start preparing to show their goats on March 8th! The kids showed their hearts out, but unfortunately neither student was able to make sale, the good thing is they learned how to finish what they started! Inayah Johnson was disappointed that she had to part ways with her goat after the show, but Mr. Nicolas Turner had to reassured her because she had to participate in the Calf Scramble the very next day! Inayah did great in the calf scramble, and she caught her calf with

ease.

A few days later a student by the name of Alex Richards was scheduled to show his pig. Alex did great in the show, but unfortunately the competition was to tough, and he failed to make sale. On the last day of Houston Livestock Show, Booker T. Washington FFA went out in style! One of the leaders in the program Joel Stafford was scheduled to calf scramble. Joel was very confident that he would catch due to the fact that he caught a calf in Fort

Worth's Calf Scramble a few months prior. Joel went out there and caught a calf in less than 30 seconds. He was the first student to catch, and he won the T. A. Glazier 1st Catch Award belt buckle!

Joel did so good he received a sponsorship from the President of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Joel Cowley I am very proud of my students because they represented Booker T. Washington High School and the High School of Engineering Professions wonderfully. - BTW
