CRIMINAL JUSTICE

By: Roy Douglas Malonson

Hypocrisy at its finest: What a White man can get away with, a Black man would get lynched for half, and this “unspoken but well understood” rule of thumb is something that African Americans have been aware of for generations. And White people know it too, they just once pretended to ignore it, that is, until their “Proud Boy” criminal-in-chief Donald Trump became president of the United States of America. It’s been hell ever since. We want you think about something. Imagine if Barack Obama did or said half the things Trump did, the country’s first Black president would have been impeached -- with MORE than enough votes to kick him out of the White House -- or even assassinated while Trump keeps getting passes for no other reason than he was born rich - AND WHITE! The world of Trump is CRIMINAL and goes

against all of the JUSTICE that Obama was feverishly working to bring to America. A revisit of all of the atrocious and egregious acts Trump committed while in office shows how racist this country is – and how much racism certain “shades” of political leaders are willing to turn a blind eye to in order to protect one of their own. Republicans – we are talking about you! Trump has been wreaking havoc on America even before he became president, but his “rock star” celebrity status - with no political background - made him a “Teflon Don” Godfather that Francis Ford Coppola could not even conceive. The last four years have seen Trump commit one offense after another, with no Republicans willing to speak up or out against him, for fear of retaliation from him Criminal Justice and his base, possibly loscont’d page 4 ing their seats. Texas was brought to its knees this past week after a historic winter storm blew in, bringing temperatures the Lone Star State hasn’t seen in over the last 70 years. At one point, CenterPoint Energy, which serves the Houston area, was feverishly working to restore service to nearly 1.27 million people who were impacted by outages. It was a “blame game,” with both the Governor of Texas and the Houston mayor pointing fingers at Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), saying it was responsible for the state not being prepared to handle the epic cold, leaving millions of residents without power, water pipes bursting in homes statewide, hotels closures limiting places to evacuate to, and dozens of people dying from either cold exposure, house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning while just trying to stay warm. “Neither the City of Houston nor Harris County controls or regulates ERCOT or the power generators. The power outages are the responsibility of the state,” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner tweeted. He also acknowledged that he, too, was without power and frustrated. As the Energy Capital of the World, Houston is the headquarters and the intellectual capital for virtually every segment of the energy industry including exploration, production, transmission, marketing, supply, and technology. Houston employs nearly a third of the nation’s jobs in oil and gas extraction and has specific

Hilterism: Trumpism Who would have thought that after the election of Barack Obama in 2008, America would elect an openly Hitler mentality-oriented president? Donald Trump received more votes in America than Hitler received in Germany. On November 6, 2021 we saw the openly racist violent mentality of many of the White individualisticinsurrectionists who voted for Trump the second time around, and were violently disappointed. Question: who are these individuals? At the same time, these insurrectionists were trashing the sacred symbol of American democracy; a Black man and a Jewish man in the state of Georgia were making senatorial history. What a hopeful-spiritual contradiction! After a bloody Civil War, a violent Civil Rights struggle, and

political assassinations there are still a significant number of Whites who refuse to share God’s bounty with other Americans because of racial hatred. January 6th should have been a spiritual reflection time-out for chaos in America. Instead, on January 20th when Garth Brooks sang “Amazing Grace” at President Joe Biden’s inaugural ceremony, many Whites who are Trump Loyalists were reactionary and punitively upset at Garth. WHY? Amazing Grace is a gospel song for the ages written in 1772 by John Newton, a White man. Its spiritual meaning transcends race, religion, time, social-class and cultural barriers. Republicans are sick and penicillin is not the cure, because they desire to live in an entirely White country. America was never a White country because Native Americans (Indians) and Mexicans were indigenous-inhabitants of the land when the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. By and large, the Republican Party has a White Privilege agenda, and the Democratic Party has an inclusive Multi-Cultural Amer-

ican identity agenda as profoundly displayed in President Biden’s inaugural inclusive-programmatic format. Diversity is America’s greatest strength. Diversity is profoundly expressed throughout nature, not sameness. A rose of different colors is still a rose. Likewise, “The beauties of Nature come in all colors. The strengths of humankind come in many forms. Every being is wonderfully unique. All of us contribute in different ways. When we learn to honor the difference, and appreciate the mix, we find harmony.” Unfortunately, rather than share God’s bounty with other Americans, Trump Loyalists would rather destroy the country. Question: what is the origin of White hatred/ privilege? Most of the spiritual confusion in America lay squarely at the doorsteps of White Christian Right Evangelical churches, and White pastors who are preaching ungodly-worldly doctrines, and calling it The Word of GOD: “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.”

We must run while they walk! How many bubbles are in a bar of ivory soap? This is the question that Southern voter registrars used to prevent you and I from voting for decades. It was state sponsored Voter Suppression and White Supremacy. “King Donald Trump” and his millions of acolytes spread thousands of lies and disinformation and still lost the Presidency, House of Representatives and Senate. King Trump’s own appointed judges dissed him dozens of times. Despite the “stop the steal” trope, Black and Brown voters kept their eyes on the prize. The crushing defeat came at the hands of a combination of hooks and right crosses thrown by voters of color in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Arizona. The Georgia voter phenomena is a

forecast for Texas. In Georgia, it was unheard of for Black voters to overperform in a special runoff election. Black and Brown voter participation exceeded expectations even after the Republican opponents threw the kitchen sink. They were knee-deep into a contentious divorce by Rev. Raphael Warnock and they used his sermons at Ebenezer Baptist Church to color him as antiAmerican. Voters of color were sophisticated enough to dismiss the hype. The lesson for Blacks and voters of color is that we must run and organize while the lunatic Republicans walk and destroy themselves. Kamikazes during World War II were essentially pilot-guided explosive missiles. Kamikazes within the Republican Party are on a mission to trounce and dismantle other Republicans. Let them embrace death instead of defeat and shame. Let them become a regional conspiratorial party seeded by QAnon theories and their delusional “Queen” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Republicans are on a suicide mis-

As the Japanese kamikaze pilots found honor in crashing outdated planes into battleships, the Republicans have closed ranks around an outdated strategy to reach an America that no longer exists. by purging hundreds of thousands of voters from the rolls. Additionally, there were 950,000 voters of color that did not vote in the presidential election, but they caught the wave and crushed the odds in the Special Election. Barack, Michelle and VP –elect Kamala Harris joined Black voters in Georgia and spoke truth to power and changed the trajectory of history and the country. One of the challenges in Texas is to reach the registered voters of color that stayed home. Will people of color start vigorous

as food. They have been warned to stop and rediscover the soul of their party. Most are consolidating around an insurrectionist and have targeted those who vote their conscience. They have decided to devour Rep. Liz Cheney and 11 other party members who felt violated by the crazies that invaded the capitol. Kevin McCarthy and the party of Trump want to excommunicate their principled colleagues and banish them to the Gulag. The question is: What is our responsibility while they eat their own? Consider this, is it true that sometimes your “opponent’s opponent” is your friend? Before Stacey Abrams campaigned for governor and the special run-off in Georgia for the US Senate, the State of Georgia had begun a voter suppression campaign

civic education and engagement programs for 16- and 17-year-olds? George Floyd and Breonna Taylor demand that we emulate Georgia and change the narrative. We must find the programs that aim to build a progressive presence in Texas and flip the state to blue. Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton can only hold the state by stopping you and I from voting responsibly. Guess what, in the nation and the State of TEXAS we have friends - white, brown, red and yellow. Remember the proverb, A single bracelet does not jingle. Let’s do this... Criminal Justice cont’d world none of us have ever witnessed before. A world where clear audio is heard of him boasting about grabbing women by the pu***, but people still voted for him anyway. A world where clear audio is heard of him admitting to a reporter that he knew the coronavirus was coming to America, but he chose to downplay the information and the deadly virus, costing hundreds of thousands of American lives. A world where clear audio files are heard of him begging -- downright bullying -- officials to “find votes” for him so he can overturn the 2020 election - which he clearly lost. But we are jumping ahead of ourselves, let’s take a walk down the last four years. Under the Trump Administration/ Regime, we have experienced a government shutdown, and hardworking men and women who have never been on public assistance found themselves unemployed, homeless and in food distribution lines while the former president worked on perfecting his golf swing. Trump, in national White House press briefings, mocked the handicap, spouted various conspiracy theories about media “witch hunts” against him and even used racist “Kung-Flu” rhetoric about Asians, which is now causing an influx of brutal, some even deadly, unprovoked hate crime attacks against Asian Americans. Trump shockingly threw rolls of paper towels to Puerto Ricans displaced by hurricanes, and RIPPED apart families trying to cross the border, leaving the children caged for years now, with some not having seen their mothers

February 21, 2021 or fathers since being taken into custody, and likely will never again. The man who claims this election was “stolen” from him, clearly has a case of selective amnesia of how he recruited foreign interference when having Russians get involved in his first presidential run against Hillary Clinton. And in the recent election against Joe Biden, he threatened to hold up military aid to a foreign nation -- the Ukraine -- unless they “dug up dirt” against Biden and his son. If that had been Obama, the seat at the desk in the Oval Office would never had had a chance to warm up. What if Obama flat-out refused to release his tax returns - - like Trump -- then loaded the cabinet with appointees of his super-rich friends, family and in-laws who have no political experience, no training, no credentials, no empathy and definitely no connection to the common man all under the disguise of a “Drain the Swamp” motto which was nothing more than a smokescreen while he secured his own agenda.

GREATER HOUSTON EDITION What if Obama had a mistress-porn star by the name of “Stormy” – allegedly like Trump -and had his hot-shot lawyer pay for her silence? Obama’s Black bottom would never have been able to “weather” that storm. If -- under Obama’s watch -- more than 200,000 Americans died from COVID-19, he would have been burned at the stake worse than a Salem witch. If-- under Obama’s watch -- Russians placed bounties to have American soldiers killed, or craft assassination attempts against other opponents, he would have publicly demoralized, criticized and called weak, unlike Trump who could casually dismiss it without a statement. If -- under Obama’s watch -- Black Lives Matters protesters (instead of Trump’s Oath Keepers, Proud Boys and insurrectionists) would have stormed Capitol Hill in a deadly assault and hide-and-seek quest for the Vice President and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, there would have been BLOOD EVERYWHERE… BLACK BLOOD…BLACK LIVES ‘DON’T’ MATTER BLOOD…NEGRO BLOOD on OBAMA’S BLOODY BLACK HANDS. Oh, but not when it comes to Trump. His “Lily White” hands remain clean in the eyes of the GOP. Like John Lennon sang, “Imagine all the people, living for today. You may say I’m a dreamer…But I’m not the only one … I hope someday you’ll join us…. And the world will be as one.” This is no dream; we are all fighting hard to wake up from the nightmare of Trump’s America. His criminal acts go unpunished and, as usual, no justice for us. Unprepared cont’d focus on energy tech and renewable forms of energy. With these bragging rights, many were wondering how could a winter storm that so other states breeze through wreak havoc in our lives? Experts say the ERCOT market design was fatally flawed, with it not being a question of it would ever fail, but rather “when” it would fail. In 2013, Ed Hirs, an energy fellow at the University of Houston, predicted grid failure would occur in Texas if the market wasn’t redesigned. And he was correct. The grid reached a breaking point early Monday as conditions worsened and knocked power plants offline, ERCOT president Bill Magness confirmed. Some wind turbine generators were iced, but nearly twice as much power was wiped out at natural gas and coal plants. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott called

frees Texas from federal regulations, including ones that could have required it to be better prepared for the freak cold snap. Grid operators knew one day an event like this could happen, but they were not forced to do anything about it. It was left up to the power companies to invest in the costly upgrades to prepare their systems for a massive storm, but many opted out of that decision. An ERCOT representative explained the upgrades are not mandatory, but there are financial incentives to stay online, but no regulation at this point. Hirs said deregulation is not an excuse. “If you’re going to say you can handle it by yourself, step up and do it,” he said. So, with that being said, we have to ask: have we learned anything yet? Greed costs lives. - AANI

MEET STACEY PLASKETT

Not many people knew who Stacey E. Plaskett was before the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, but after the Congresswoman eloquently, but fiercely, laid out a case of Trump’s misdeeds, many wanted to get to know her better. So, who is Plaskett and where is she from? Congresswoman Plaskett represents the United States Virgin Islands’ at-large Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. She is currently serving her fourth term in Congress. With Vice President Kamala Harris no longer being a senator, Plaskett is now the only Black woman in the chamber. Plaskett made history when she became the first nonvoting delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives to serve as an impeachment manager. Even though she argued the case to convict Trump for allegedly inciting the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, she was blocked from voting to impeach,

because the U.S. Virgin Islands, the territory she represents, does not have a vote in Congress. In her opening remarks of the trial, she mentioned speaking “truth to power.” “You’ll see that this violent attack was not planned in secret. The insurgents believed they were doing the duty of their president. They were following his orders,” Plaskett said. She further added that Trump spent months “cultivating a base of people who were violent, praising that violence and then leading that violence, that rage, straight at our door.” She used Trump’s own words against him. “We’re going to the Capitol,” Trump said. “We fight. We fight like hell. And if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.” Even though she helped to stack a case many said was undeniable, the GOP would not go against Trump and he was let off with nothing more than a slap of his Republican wrist – again.

But Plaskett is being praised for her impressive work, and she has an even more impressive story, journeying from housing projects in Brooklyn, N.Y., to St. Croix, the U.S. Virgin Islands. For the 117th Congress, the members of the House Steering and Policy Committee unanimously appointed Congresswoman Plaskett to serve on the House Committee on Ways and Means, the oldest and one of the most exclusive committees in Congress. In true historic fashion, Ms. Plaskett is the first Member from a U.S. territory and the fourth African American woman to serve on this committee. She is also a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, House Blockchain Caucus, and the New Democrat Coalition where she is a cochair of the Infrastructure Taskforce and the at-large Leadership Member. Congresswoman Plaskett also co-chairs the Congressional Caribbean Caucus. Ms. Plaskett earned her un-

BILLIE HOLIDAY’S “STRANGE FRUIT”

Many may not realize, but legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday was a big part of the Civil Rights Movement. In fact, her 1939 song about lynching, “Strange Fruit,” made her a target of the FBI. “When you think of Billie Holiday, you think of this brilliant tortured jazz singer. I didn’t know that she kicked off the Civil Rights Movement. That’s history and they keep it from us,” said Lee Daniels, who has directed an upcoming film about Holiday’s life. Eleanora Fagan, known professionally as “Billie Holiday,” had a career which spanned 26 years. Nicknamed “Lady Day” by her friend and music partner Lester Young, Holiday had an innovative influence on jazz music and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. “Strange Fruit” stunned audiences and redefined music. The iconic song is a haunting protest against the inhumanity of racism. The lyrics, first written by Abel Meeropol, a white Jewish schoolteacher in the Bronx - mixed with Holiday’s vocals - stirs souls. “Southern trees bear a strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swingin’ in the South-

ern breeze Strange fruit hangin’ from the poplar trees” Meeropol was a dedicated Communist and progressive thinker who was also a part-time writer and poet. Sometime in the 1930s, he came upon a photo of a lynching. That image remained in Meeropol’s mind, and first led to a poem, “Bitter Fruit,” which he wrote for a 1937 union publication. The poem was set to music and renamed “Strange Fruit” and performed on several occasions, including by singer Laura Duncan at Madison Square Garden. It then made its way to Holiday, who was performing at New York’s Café Society club. Her version haunted audiences, and the rest is history. “Strange Fruit” protests the lynching of Black Americans, with lyrics that compare the victims to the fruit of trees. Such lynchings had reached a peak in the Southern United States at the turn of the 20th century. The song has been called “a declaration of war” and “the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement.” Holiday said that singing “Strange Fruit” made her fearful of retaliation but, because its imagery reminded her of her father, she continued to sing the piece, making it a regular

part of her live performances. Holiday would close with it; the waiters would stop all service in advance; the room would be in darkness except for a spotlight on Holiday’s face; and there would be no encore. During the musical introduction to the song, Holiday stood with her eyes closed, as if she were evoking a prayer. Holiday recorded two major sessions of the song at Commodore, one in 1939 and one in 1944. The song was highly regarded; the 1939 recording eventually sold a million copies, in time becoming Holiday’s biggest-selling recording. Holiday died on July 17, 1959 of pulmonary edema and heart failure at the age of 44. The song, which has received critical acclaim over the decades, will continue to live on. Holiday’s “Strange Fruit” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1978. It was also included in the “Songs of the Century” list of the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1999, Time Magazine named “Strange Fruit” as “Best Song of the Century.” In 2002, the Library of Congress honored the song as one of 50 recordings chosen that year to add to the

National Recording Registry. The song was included in the National Recording Registry on January 27, 2003. In 2010, the New Statesman listed it as one of the “Top 20 Political Songs.” In 2011, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution listed the song as Number One on “100 Songs of the South.” Daniels’ film, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” is scheduled to be released February 26 on Hulu.

Aldine ISD cont’d every U.S. President has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Black History Month is also celebrated in Canada and the United Kingdom. This year the national theme of Black History Month is: The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity. Black History Month has inspired schools and communities across the nation to organize local celebrations, create black history clubs and host performances and lectures. Aldine ISD schools will be celebrating Black History Month throughout the month of February. In Aldine ISD, we will be using the month to reflect on the theme “Legacy.” “While it is a time to celebrate the Black men and women who have made sweeping contributions to our country, it is something we can all celebrate now and throughout the year,” Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney, said. “We can all celebrate because all of us have the ability to build our own legacy and make real change. I have no doubt that our stu-

dents are working to do just that. Throughout this month, we will take a look at the accomplishments of Black people and also highlight those in our District who are making a significant impact in our community.” This year, Aldine ISD is hosting the inaugural Black History Oratory Competition. The competition is open to all Aldine ISD students in grades 3-12. Each campus will host individual campus competitions before selecting the top winner at each campus. Campus competitions will take place between January 19 – February 10. The district competition will take place from February 17-19. Students who are learning at home and on campus are encouraged to participate and share their voices. Join us throughout the month as we celebrate the many achievements and contributions of African Americans. Use the hashtag #AldineBHM to share your Black History Month celebrations!
