Quelle grande joie pour moi, à peine arrivée de France, de commencer ma mission à la direction de l’Alliance Française de Porto Rico avec un évènement incontournable de la programmation culturelle de cette belle Maison : Le Festival de cinéma européen. Quatre jours de projections, d’échanges et de festivités dans ce merveilleux espace qu’est le Fine Arts Popular Center à Hato Rey.

Nous sommes aussi très fiers de pouvoir offrir l’audiodescription et le sous-titrage pour personnes malvoyantes et malentendantes sur deux films et sur toute la sélection de Cortadito 2021.

Après de long mois de confinement et de restrictions, c’est un réel bonheur de pouvoir se réunir et célébrer tous ensemble la 12ème Edition d’un festival qui nous transporte et nous fait voyager. De l’Islande à l’Espagne en passant entre autres par l’Allemagne, la France et l’Italie, nous découvrirons le travail de grands réalisateurs et interprètes de genres aussi différents que le film à suspense, la comédie et le drame sans oublier le film d’action et d’aventure magistralement représenté par Jean Paul Belmondo, inoubliable acteur récemment disparu.

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

FESTIVAL DE CINE EUROPEO DE PUERTO RICO Cómo olvidar aquel 16 de marzo del 2020 cuando, el equipo del Festival de Cine Europeo a punto de finalizar los artículos promocionales de la 11ma edición del festival, se oficializó que la Tierra entera se paralizaba a consecuencia de un virus mortal.

La incertidumbre nos tocó a todos.

No sabíamos qué sería del mundo, qué sería de Puerto Rico y si al final la edición número once del festival se podría llevar a cabo. Sin embargo, una vez más como puertorriqueños resilientes aguantamos, nos adaptamos y salimos adelante produciendo una edición virtual que para nuestra grata sorpresa fue todo un éxito.

Aunque el miedo de tener que volver al encierro por el bienestar común continúa inminente y acechante, vamos saliendo de esta pandemia con la frente en alto y a flote.

Ya han pasado poco más de dos años desde la última vez que nos reunimos presencialmente a celebrar nuestro festival. Como dijo el gran Raúl Juliá en la película La Gran Fiesta, “Lo Imposible

no es Boricua”. Con este moto seguimos hacia adelante, contentos de que, a pesar de la pandemia, finalmente podemos regresar a las salas de cine a darnos un buen Bordeaux y disfrutar de lo que nos apasiona, el séptimo arte.

Con una nueva directora a cargo de la Alliance Française y un incansable equipo merecedor de un reconocimiento incuestionable por su ardua labor en hacer que este, el festival de todos nosotros, continúe su misión de ser vínculo entre Europa y Puerto Rico, queremos invitarles a franquear las puertas del Fine Arts Popular Center nuevamente y disfrutar, en la insustituible magia de sus salas, de la 12ma edición del Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico no es la excepción.

Por esta razón, desde hace 9 años la Alliance Française de Puerto Rico ha tenido un fuerte compromiso con el cine hecho en nuestro archipiélago. De modo que para el 2022 regresamos más determinados que nunca a continuar con nuestra competencia de cortometrajes puertorriqueños bautizada Cortadito: Presentado por TotalEnergies.

No pierdas la oportunidad de someter un proyecto cinematográfico a ser producido con la ayuda de la AFPR. Se escogerán 6 proyectos que luego de producidos serán presentados en el Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico 2022.

HISTORY

Desde el 2013, el Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico ha ayudado a desarrollar el talento de cineastas puertorriqueños en la producción y exhibición de cortometrajes locales. Cortadito es una competencia anual de cortometrajes creado con el fin de apoyar a cineastas locales con los recursos necesarios para fomentar sus talentos y la plataforma adecuada para amplificar su visibilidad. Obras presentadas en Cortadito han alcanzado reconocimiento internacional, incluso en diferentes festivales de mayor prestigio. Debido a la pandemia, este año no hubo convocatoria para la creación de cortometrajes, por lo tanto para este Festival se escogieron obras ya creadas.

Since 2013, the Puerto Rico European Film Fetival has fostered the professional and artistic development of aspiring Puerto Rican filmmakers. As a competition, Cortadito is geared to provide participating filmmakers with the resources to produce new work, as well as a public forum for its presentation. Short films presented at the competition have gone on to compete at various festivals in the United States and around the world. Because of the ongoing pandemic, the 2021 edition of Cortadito opted to present previously completed short films.

El jueves 27 de mayo de 2021 se entregaron un total de 11 premios en la Noche de Premiación Online. El cortometraje Mateo obtuvo el premio Mención de Honor del Jurado y el premio a la Mejor Dirección.

On May 27, 2021, the winners of Cortadito 2021: Presented by TotalEnergies were announced at the closing night of the Spring Digital Edition. Warren? took home five awards, including Best Short Film. The short Mateo received an Honorable Mention from the Jury, as well as Best Director.

En el 2020 la Alliance Française de Puerto Rico se comprometió aún más con el servicio a diferentes comunidades sociales, favoreciendo aquellas con discapacidades visuales y auditivas, gracias a la tecnología innovadora de subtítulos asistivos y audiodescripción.

En esta edición de otoño el Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico presentará tres tandas con materiales asistivos.

Las películas Just Kids y The Barefoot Emperor cuentan con subtítulos asistivos para las comunidades sordomudas. De igual manera la competencia de cortometrajes puertorriqueños, Cortadito 2021: Presentado por TotalEnergies, incluye audiodescripción y subtítulos asistivos.

Este esfuerzo no hubiese sido posible sin el apoyo de la Fundación Puertorriqueña de las Humanidades, el National Endowment for the Humanities y la

Fundación Ángel Ramos. El Festival de Cine Europeo está eternamente agradecido a estas entidades por hacer del cine de Puerto Rico uno más inclusivo para todos.

Back in 2020, the Alliance Française of Puerto Rico committed itself to expanding its services to different social communities—most notably, the hearing and visually impaired, thanks to the innovation of assistive subtitles and audiodescription.

For this Fall Edition, the Puerto Rico European Film Festival will present three different screenings of films with assistive materials.

The European film Just Kids and The Barefoot Emperor will offer assistive subtitles for the hearing impaired. The Festival will also offer a special viewing with both audiodescription and assistive subtitles of the Puerto Rican shorts participating in Cortadito 2021: Presented by TotalEnergies.

This groundbreak effort would not have been possible without the support of the Puerto Rican Foundation for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Ángel Ramos Foundation.
