DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

FESTIVAL DE CINE EUROPEO DE PUERTO RICO Este 2021, se cumplen 12 años desde que la Alliance Française concibió la idea de traer el cine europeo a nuestro archipiélago a través del Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico. Desde entonces, el Festival ha cursado por desastres naturales, pandemias e incluso las posibilidades de no poder celebrarse. Es en estas vicisitudes, que hemos evolucionado para continuar siendo un vínculo multicultural y de diálogo entre el Viejo y el Nuevo Mundo.

12 years ago, the Alliance Française had an aspiration: to present the best of European cinema to an avid public in Puerto Rico. The Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico European Film Festival) was thus born. Since its launch, the Festival has evolved with the times, facing challenges fit for a movie along the way—from natural disasters to even a global pandemic. HISTORY

Desde el 2013, el Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico ha ayudado a desarrollar el talento de cineastas puertorriqueños en la producción y exhibición de cortometrajes locales. Cortadito es una competencia anual de cortometrajes creado con el fin de apoyar a cineastas locales con los recursos necesarios para fomentar sus talentos y la plataforma adecuada para amplificar su visibilidad. Obras presentadas en Cortadito han alcanzado reconocimiento internacional, incluso en diferentes festivales de mayor prestigio. Debido a la pandemia, este año no hubo convocatoria para la creación de cortometrajes, por lo tanto para este Festival se escogieron obras ya creadas.

Since 2013, the Puerto Rico European Film Fetival has fostered the professional and artistic development of aspiring Puerto Rican filmmakers. As a competition, Cortadito is geared to provide participating filmmakers with the resources to produce new work, as well as a public forum for its presentation. Short films presented at the competition have gone on to compete at various festivals in the United States and around the world. Because of the ongoing pandemic, the 2021 edition of Cortadito opted to present previously completed short films.

Durante la Noche de Clausura virtual este próximo 27 de mayo de 2021, se premiará a los ganadores de Cortadito 2021: Presentado por Total. Se otorgarán varios premios en diferentes categorías tanto para los cortometrajes puertorriqueños como para los europeos. Como parte del jurado, el Festival contará con las productoras Annabelle Mullen y Maite Rivera, y el escritor Rubén Ramos. El mejor cortometraje europeo ganará un premio de $1,000, y el mejor cortometraje puertorriqueño se llevará $1,500.

During the virtual Closing Night on May 27, 2021, the winners of Cortadito 2021 Presented by Total will be announced. Puerto Rican and European filmmakers will received awards in their own respective categories. This year’s jury include producer Annabelle Mullen, producer Maite Rivera and writer Rubén Ramos. The best Puerto Rican film will receive a cash prize of $1,500, while the best European short film will take home $1,000.

The heart of this Festival has always been its showcase of European films. Through the vehicle of cinema, we fulfill our mission of building a cultural bridge between Europe and Puerto Rico. During this digital edition, we are thrilled to offer 12 films from an array of countries, including France, Spain and Italy. In particular, we would like to acknowledge the consulates of Germany and Switzerland for their respective contributions to the program, which include the coming-of-age drama Cocoon and the Romanche-language comedy Hide and Seek. While 2021 has continued to leave international borders closed, we hope our program allows our audience to experience new cultures and perspectives.

De casualidad se topa con Elias, un niño introvertido que podría permitirle vivir legalmente en Bélgica. Desde Viena llega la Doctora Ilse von Stroheim, arquitecta de la nacionalista Nova Europa, que ahora sustituye a la Unión, y de la que nuestro confuso “héroe” está llamado a ser Emperador. ¿O no?

The fragile monarch demands to return home at once, but is condemned instead to a strict regime of rest and rehabilitation. From Vienna arrives a delegation headed by the distinguished Dr. Ilse von Stroheim, who bears the thunderous news that the last King of the Belgians will become the first Emperor of Europe. The King decides to take matters into his own hands.
