South Florida’s leading engineering education resource. The college offers a complete range of fully accredited engineering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs in cybersecurity, internet of things, construction management and computing and information sciences as well as biomedical, civil and environmental, electrical and computer, and mechanical and materials engineering. With $82M of external funding, research is an integral part of the college’s mission and its success. The college is the largest producer of Hispanic engineers, and one of the top producers of African American engineers and females with doctoral degrees in engineering among public institutions.
Florida International University is a vibrant, student-centered public research university, located in South Florida.

State-of-the-Art Research Facilities Empower Innovation at the College of Engineering & Computing

The Wall of Wind is dedicated to researching extreme weather, testing future climate scenarios –particularly for Category 5 storms –through simulations. The large-scale hurricane simulator utilizes a 12-fan, 8,400-horsepower system capable of generating 157 mph wind speeds with rain intrusion. This research analyzes the potential damage levels and devastation caused by extreme hurricane winds.

FIU is expanding its College of Engineering and Computing with a 125,000 square-foot, six-story building that will house makerspace labs, active learning classrooms and research laboratories at Modesto A. Maidique Campus. The new multidisciplinary facility is designed to better prepare the next generation of engineering and computing professionals as part of an effort to help graduate more engineers and expand innovation in Miami and throughout the state. The LEED Certified Gold building will feature 20,000 square feet of interactive research and teaching space with best-in-class computing and prototyping equipment for advancements in the fields of cybersecurity, nanotechnology drug delivery and environmental resilience.

The Solar Research Facility is the only solar research facility of its kind that FPL has installed at a Florida university. The 1.4-megawatt solar array is comprised of more than 4,400 solar panels on canopy-like structures that provide clean electricity to FPL’s grid and shade for about 400 parking spaces. The unique solar array incorporates a 24-foot by 12-foot FIU logo that is visible from high above.
Engineering faculty and students from the Energy, Power & Sustainability (EPS) program at FIU will use the installation to conduct important research that will help FPL advance solar energy in the state.
FIU is the largest Hispanic serving educational institution in the continental United States and is one of the nation’s leading producers of scientists and engineers from underrepresented groups. We at FIU are thrilled you want to join our Panther family and pursue your graduate degree with us. Each program has a graduate program director (GPD) and in most cases, a committee of faculty members makes the decision on your admission.
This means decisions take longer, especially if the program pools all applicants and makes all the decisions at once. It also means that each program has its individual requirements and deadlines. You are strongly encouraged to visit your program’s website and contact the GPD to receive the most current information.
