spaces in our region, assisted with more than a dozen public art projects, celebrated more than 115 First Fridays, and sold more than a quarter of a million dollars’ worth of art. s I write this article, my team and I are wrapping up our co-hosting duties for On-Ramp, a 3-day, Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator organized by the Indiana Arts Commission.

We welcomed 34 entrepreneurial creatives to Noblesville for this workshop, and tonight, we hosted a party for them in the South Alley of downtown Noblesville, featuring many of the artists, musicians, and organizations that define the Noblesville Cultural Arts District. The ladies from Gal’s Guide to the Galaxy were there, with Noblesville’s latest temporary mural as their backdrop, sharing opportunities for writers and artists. Deanna from Caravan Classes facilitated a challenging coloring activity for adults. Musician Rod Schindler headlined a musical performance on one end of the alley, and at the other end, Geoff Davis sang and played one of the ukuleles he made himself! Geoff also brought along his mobile printing press and encouraged guests to make their own prints. It was a unique and triumphant way to celebrate our local arts community and a testament to the growth and engagement we’ve accomplished during our first 10 years.

As I wandered through the crowd tonight, I couldn’t help but reflect on just how much Nickel Plate Arts has done in our first 10 years.

Back in 2012, as Nickel Plate was just being established, Geoff Davis was working hard to build Noblesville’s reputation as a nexus for artistic achievement. However, Gal’s Guide, Caravan Classes, and so many others hadn’t even been conceived of, yet. While the South Alley had been closed to traffic, it, like the rest of the downtown square, had no public art and was virtually never considered for public parties and musical performances. What a different world it was then! Since then, we’ve built a network of over 1200 artists, musicians, actors, writers, makers and creatives of all kinds. We’ve helped to design and install at least 8 new exhibition Pictured Above: What was once seen as just an alleyway, over the years has transformed to become an additional art activation location, drawing crowds in unusually charming places.

However, perhaps our greatest accomplishment is not any one thing we’ve done, but the fact that we continue to succeed in bringing the arts community together as a whole, to work and advocate together. We knew when we started that this region was full of artists and performers who were each finding some level of success, but we didn’t realize just how much impact we could have by bringing their voices and experiences together. Now that Fishers is on the precipice of building a brand new arts center, and Noblesville is exploring possibilities for a new arts & entertainment district in downtown, it’s clear that the influence of creatives has had tremendous impact on our economy and our culture and that the next decade will be studded with artistic achievements beyond our current imagining.

Of course, we’ve also suffered some painful losses in our first 10 years. I would be remiss if I did not mention three people who had particular impact on my understanding of our mission and our obligation to our arts community. On April 24th of this year, Hamilton County lost one of its greatest champions when John E. Bundy passed away. John, who’s irrepressible personality and sense of humor are unforgettable, won national acclaim for his incomparable duck decoys and incredible wood finishes and his success buoyed our entire arts community. John was also a passionate naturalist who championed efforts to help the White River recover from a catastrophic chemical spill and fish-kill in 2000. John’s art was rooted in his love of nature and his legacy will live on in our waterways and backroads for generations to come, Artist Doug Arnholter passed away on February 23, 2017, a few weeks after suffering a tragic accident, and just a few months after opening a new studio in downtown Noblesville. Doug was passionate about supporting charitable and social causes and was spearheading a visionary project called “Mural of America,” through which he had created dozens of mural panels with the help of community members far & wide. His energy, vision, and determination were contagious and

he helped inspire others to see the beautiful potential in their neighbors and communities.

He also helped prove that Noblesville was a welcoming place for artists.

On September 17, 2021 we lost Karen Miles, one of Nickel Plate’s original studio artists and advocates for local creatives in all media.

Karen’s artistic style was expressive, taking her interpretation of landscapes and still life to the very edge of abstraction. She used a vibrant palette of colors, turning roadside weed patches into magical oases. She worked fast, but would sometimes spend months on a single canvas, reworking the composition and color scheme until it finally captured the ineffable something that had first captured her imagination. Karen championed an interdisciplinary meet-up while she was a studio artist, which culminated in the book “Poetry and Paint,” featuring literary and visual work from dozens of area artists who had been meeting up regularly in order to be inspired by each other’s skills and ingenuity. Karen was also a pioneering woman, who had made a career in the tech sector, while raising three children.

She was a force to be reckoned with and her bold engagement with the world will continue to inspire me and influence Nickel Plate’s path forward.

There are many others who have shaped our creative community, but I feel these three losses keenly as we turn our gaze to the future.

What will the next 10 years bring? The only way to know is to boldly go forward, seeking out new opportunities and new experiences in every corner of our community. Nickel Plate Arts celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year! A lot has happened in ten years, including some big, transformational projects alongside slow-and-steady growth. Hamilton County Tourism first incorporated Nickel Plate Arts, Inc. in April, 2012, with the goal of supporting, promoting and providing outstanding arts experiences in the cities and towns along the Nickel Plate railroad. Early that year, the organization offered classes and workshops, along with opportunities for artists and performers to share their work, while renovations were completed on two historic buildings on 8th street in Noblesville. In September, we celebrated the opening of our campus and our first 8 studio artists moved in. Since then, we’ve been systematically growing and expanding our programs, services, and artist network and are constantly on the lookout for new arts resources to cultivate for the benefit of all.

No matter how you measure it, we’ve come a long way from our first First Friday, a rainy & cold October night on which four people stopped in at the Judge Stone House.

In celebration of our 10th Anniversary, we asked some of our members, partners and supporters to share their favorite memory or reflect on the impact Nickel Plate Arts has had on our community.

“My favorite memory at Nickel Plate Arts was an antiValentines Day poetry reading we did years ago. My most recent memory is a good one. This spring we had a reading associated with the release of our Aspirational Picnic Table/NHS Literary Magazine. I love seeing the excitement on young writers and artists’ faces when they read their work aloud in a “real” place - not a school space.

I also remember telling a campfire story one October night around a fire at Nickel Plate Arts. That was fun too.

My aspirations haven’t changed since I first knew and worked with Nickel Plate Arts ten years ago. I still want writers and artists to have a place that makes them feel heard, seen and respected as artists. I was introduced to NPA through a series of fortunate events which included a demo of weaving along with other artists on the Square. In the beginning there were pop-up umbrella shows which were so much fun and gave me the courage to try more ways of showing my art.

Nickel Plate Arts works overtime to promote the creativity of artists in Hamilton County through local and regional publications that would not otherwise be possible.

My favorite memory is developing paintings that were appropriate to the theme for the exhibit/show that was being promoted. I remember the call out for the “Paint the Town Red” exhibit. Red was not yet a strong part of my color palate. Developing a painting that explored the use of the color red pushed me beyond my comfort level and changed the way I looked at the importance of color to make a dramatic statement in my paintings. NICKEL PLATE ARTS SUMMER ARTS GUIDE

Recently, I started working at Nickel Plate Arts as the Partnership Manager and the Regional Arts Partner for Indiana Arts Commission. In attempts to clarify what my job was, beyond just the nuts and bolts, I realized my career now involved being an advocate for arts and artists. This job allows me to connect with artists all over Central Indiana and beyond.

I work with local artists who are partners of Nickel Plate Arts. We have some amazing creative businesses in our community and it’s an honor to help promote their business and connect them with other artists. If you or your creative business is interested in becoming a Featured Partner, please reach out to me.

As Regional Arts Partner for Central Indiana, I facilitate the IAC’s grant process. While I could already see the joy of helping artists and groups receive funds for projects, I have been blown away by the human connections I have been able to make. My goal is to start attending events all over the area and personally meet people striving to make a positive difference in our communities. If you have an arts related event, reach out to me and I can get you started on the grant path.

It is important, as an arts advocate, to show why our communities should value the arts.

I think most people know the benefits of the Arts: the human connections, the beauty, the entertainment, and even the mental health benefits. However, I am beginning to learn and see the economic benefits of the arts. The arts in Central Indiana are strong but continue to fight for funding and visibility. Research in 2015 from Americans for the Arts found that arts supported 1,128 arts related jobs in Fishers and Noblesville alone. Furthermore, the total spending by the Nonprofit Arts and Culture Industry in those two communities was $36,678,153. Even the local governments of those cities generated $1,326,000 in revenue from the arts.

If you are an artist, have an arts group, or simply love the arts, I’d love to connect with you and see how to create a network of opportunities. I want to continue to make connections that will strengthen the impact of arts in our communities.

hile mixing business with pleasure has always been frowned upon, mixing business with art has become essential; to provide artists with clear strategies to achieve the pinnacle of entrepreneurial success. The Art of Business hopes to offer regional artists and artisans of handmade products the chance to create a profitable, sustainable business. Using funding from the Indiana Arts Commission Small Business Center grant, Kid Entrepreneur Grant, as well as sponsorship with Allegion for Art & Technology, Nickel Plate Arts plans to pool these funds to partner with local business experts and artists for a training seminar offering several categories of study.

The Art of Business is a proposed training seminar that aims to cover the basics of artist-owned business tools focusing on, but certainly not limited to: branding, finances, product pricing, networking, product display, marketing, etc. No subject matter will be left on the drawing board.

“I see the need for aspiring artists to be given support and a strategy to move through the transition from making art to creating an income generating business. Having a place for people to call home for arts industry training seems natural to be conducted by Nickel Plate Arts.

The goal being to offer artists similar training as you would any small business: where to find capital, where to find support, how to network, and understanding what tools to acquire to sustain their business long term.”

SHELDON SHALLEY TOTEMS AND NATURE’S MAGIC Sheldon Shalley’s exhibit, “Totems and Nature’s Magic” takes viewers on a shamanic journey. Totems symbolize the belief in a spiritual connection to nature. A totem is a natural object, usually an animal but sometimes a plant or any object in nature, that we might encounter a strong connection with. Sheldon uses his paintings to help him connect to totems from nature.

“I was first instructed to paint in a dream in 2002. In that dream I am invited to a family’s home for dinner. After dinner the host says that we are going to paint. He gets out canvases, brushes, paints and we start. I begin swirling paint onto a large canvas. As I paint, I notice that images are appearing. It was like the painting process in the dream was teaching me how to paint.” At first there was little detail in his works, but slowly over time, the detail began to emerge into the way Sheldon paints today.

The paintings presented in “Totems and Nature’s Magic” are Sheldon’s way of both honoring and connecting to the animals and flowers that came to him in a dream, during meditation, in a shamanic journey, or spoke to him while on a walk. At times, his works of art would begin to “simply appear to me as I stared into the background that I had painted.”

MICHAEL MCGUIRE #MIRACLEARTIST Michael McGuire is definitely a #miracleartist - and his introduction to art was not one that most people experience.

Prior to October 10, 2015, Michael traveled for his medical sales job, working long hours, and focusing on his career and his family. But at 3 a.m. on that date, he awoke confused and not speaking clearly. Megan, his wife, drove him to the emergency room.

After a CT scan, the doctor said Michael had bleeding on his brain. He was transferred to a neurology intensive care unit and diagnosed with Dural Venous Sinus Thrombosis. Two days later, he was rushed into emergency surgery to reduce severe

swelling and pressure on his brain. A portion of his skull was removed and the surgery saved his life. However, after his brain injury, Michael developed Aphasia, a language disorder caused by damage in a specific area of the brain that controls language expression and comprehension. Aphasia sometimes makes it difficult for Michael to communicate effectively with others.

During an Aphasia support group at Butler University, Michael picked up a paintbrush. He had never considered his artistic potential. A paintbrush was new to him, but something happened when he began to use it - he discovered his hidden talent and a creative eye for color. Megan, his wife, says that his ability to paint such beautiful artwork is simply amazing, and a true blessing!

Michael has been painting for about twelve years now, largely in acrylic media on canvas. He draws inspiration from many different things, painting whatever he is thinking or feeling.

While his passion is abstract art, his body of work includes contemporary, still life, faith-based and nature-themed works.

RODNEY REVEAL SUMMER SHOWCASE Constantly creating in his Nickel Plate Arts studio, Rodney Reveal has been having a little fun lately on social media. Once a painting is about ready to hang on the wall of his studio, “I go on (Facebook) asking for titles, and people enjoy doing that.”

Rodney takes his time to read every response, then when he finds a theme, “really taking community response into account,” he announces the official title. This interaction has led to some online sales for Rodney, with so many people giving their opinion on a title, generally someone asks, “Is this still available?” The rest is history.

In recent years, Rodney has been studying the works of some Quest for the West winners and focused on the softness of their paintings and how he can bring that to his own work. “I do too many hard edges, so I’m constantly trying to make myself have soft edges. Knowing when to do it, having the technique, and knowing where to use it. This is one thing I’m trying to do better at.”

JOHN DIERDORF FLORAL EXPLOSION John Dierdorf’s style has always been a process. He first picked up a paintbrush in college while studying fine arts and discovered the limitations of realism. He felt restrained. “If I wanted to take a picture, I’d take a picture.”

Inspired by Monet, Pissarro, and other Impressionists, he began developing his own expressions.

The foundational skills John developed propelled him into architecture.

Between his career and family, he wouldn’t actively pursue painting again till later on in life. And when he did, he became both an artist and arts advocate.

John served six years on the Nickel Plate Arts board as a founding board member and has been highly engaged with the organization ever since.

In the last three years, John has branched out into exhibiting with the Hamilton County Artists’ Association and the Fishers Arts Council. His style has recently taken a more nuanced tone, shifting further from realism. The goal is to provide “a two-fold impression” of his subject matter. Thin layers and bright colors give the viewer one impression while standing back, and then another once the viewer approaches it closer.

FREDRICK GREEN BEING THERE Fredrick Green paints what he knows.

People, places, moments in time. Most recently, he has been exploring the theme of “Being There.”

Fred graduated from Indiana University with a BFA in printmaking. In his words, he “got a degree from IU and it took 35 years to get a paycheck from it”. Shortly after, Fred took up a job in construction design. He developed his business and creative skills for five years before becoming an architect. It turned into a life-long career and his fine arts journey went into hiatus. In 2016 he and his wife built an art studio onto their current home; he began experimenting with painting, and she experimented with textiles.

Each painting is made with a loose hand. Thin layers build depth and create vivid tones. Smaller details are done in brushwork and larger details with tools like stamps and silicone spatulas. Fred finds the process similar to lithography.

ANTHONY SCHILLACI POST IMPRESSIONISM REALIST Anthony (Tony) Schillaci shares his work in the Stephenson House this September with his exhibit titled, “Post Impressionism Realist.” It will include many of his figure and portrait works.

Tony became interested in drawing as a seventh grader with a sister who never stopped encouraging him. In the early 70s as a War Veteran he enrolled in the American Academy of Art undergraduate courses and was fortunate enough to have inspiring teachers like Bill Parks, Irving Shapiro, and Douglas Graves. In the early 80s, Tony returned to art once more by taking evening life classes with instructor Max Randt. Every Sunday, Tony and Max enjoyed traveling around Northern Illinois painting en plein air.

With a strong interest in portrait and figure painting, Tony enrolled in the Arts Students League under the guidance of Max Ginsberg who Tony describes as a “master” and was grateful to have him as a teacher.

CRITT HUNTER COLORS OF THE ENVIRONMENT: THE SQUARE PEG CAN FIT THE ROUND HOLE After 43 years working in education - teaching art in middle schools, serving as a principal, and managing programming in the prison system, Critt Hunter truly loved teaching. But a move from Kentucky to Indianapolis, retirement and a pandemic pushed Critt down the path of focusing solely on his own art. He had always focused on others, their learning and progress - and while championing for his many students, he had not championed for himself. This was new territory.

Jumping into art fairs, public exhibits, and selling his art lead him to Nickel Plate Arts, where he will be a showcase artist in the Stephenson House for October with his exhibit, “Colors of the Environment: The Square Peg Can Fit the Round Hole.”

“The title defines my art, as well as myself.” As an art teacher, Critt encouraged students to focus on their strengths, regardless of the labels they were given. For some, their differences did not “fit in” with family and social expectations. In Critt’s classroom, even though they might be a square peg, all held value awakening to the fact that they fit the “round hole” of value. “Like many, I knew what it was like to not meet family and rural social expectations. I also am a Square Peg.”

In each painting, Critt looks to his strengths and finds ways to subtly stretch reality with arbitrary and complimentary colors. “Thus, my goal is to bring color variations to the square peg and to pleasantly surprise and please the viewer. I am grateful and honored to have my paintings exhibited and to even sell my work as my square peg fits beyond the ‘expected’ round hole.”

CRAIG MULLINS & SHERRY HAINES NEIGHBORS Craig Mullins’ training as an architect can be seen in his paintings. While he focuses on wildlife, florals and portraits, his primary interest is painting landscapes. Landscapes are truly where his architect background shines through – especially in farm and barn compositions. “I am very intrigued with the creation of a mood of time, space, and color that cannot be captured in photography.”

Although his crisp, graphic style may make you think otherwise, Craig is drawn to French Impressionist artists such as Monet as well as contemporary landscape artists. “Much of their work tends to be (works) that explore light, color, and the atmosphere of the moment in a way that compels your attention for long periods of time. That is what I am trying to achieve in my own way as an ARCHITECT-ARTIST.”

Craig is sharing his showcase with friend and neighbor Sherry Haines. After thirty years in the classroom teaching painting and drawing to talented high school students, Sherry has finally found the time and desire to pursue her first love of art: painting. During her undergraduate, graduate, and first years of teaching, Sherry focused on oil paints. She created a broad portfolio of work, focused on room interiors and reflections. But the last twelve years left her restless to explore – and she soon embraced acrylics, watercolors, pastels and colored pencils. She moved beyond her previous subject matter and found new focus by capturing the moment that something catches her attention and requires a second look. “I have come to anticipate these unexpected glimpses that bring me great joy. These

MARIANNE GLICK LAYERS & PATTERNS Marianne Glick is taking her paintings beyond the usual materials. Her upcoming showcase will display the “Layers and Patterns” she’s been excitedly exploring.

After retiring in 2005, Marianne became an avid art buyer through eBay. She gravitated towards abstract expressionist pieces and soon amassed an impressive collection. It was her husband who suggested she start painting her own pieces instead of buying. That winter, when the natural world turned bleak and gray, Marianne signed up for her first art class. She started with watercolor but quickly found that acrylic suited her vibrant and bustling style better.

This past winter, Marianne began experimenting with different supplies. She started painting on wood panels instead of canvas and sticking layers of collage and other mixed media on top. Once dry, an orbital sander thins the collage down and creates “rich, deep layers”. Her bold abstract expressionist style has remained consistent with older works. Expect to see vivid hues, lively subject matter, and highly textured surfaces!

If you live in Fishers, odds are you’ve heard the name Michelle Feeney, and it’s quite possible that you’ve seen her artwork. Teaching art for more than 15 years in the Hamilton Southeastern School District, Shelley has been a strong advocate for student creativity and expression.

Working with Fishers Arts Council, she proudly displays her students’ work in City Hall annually, but in recent years, she’s started displaying her own.

As a 2021 Lilly Teacher Creativity Fellowship winner, Shelley traveled to New Mexico and Spain to experiment with a new finger-painting technique. While she had been working on a finger-painting style for a few years, this trip pushed her and provided a new direction to refine her technique.

On the walls of Four Day Ray, you’ll see paintings capturing sunsets in Costa Brava, quaint villages nestled in hills, and groves of thick olive trees. The textures and colors are quite engaging, which lead Shelley to the most appropriate exhibit title, “Colors and Textures of the Land.”

AROUND THE USA Michael Jack’s love of the Palouse region of Washington state in the Summer, and Maine in the Winter, are just two reasons that his upcoming Four Day Ray exhibit is so aptly titled, “Around the USA.” An avid learner who loves to travel, Michael is continuously striving to improve his photographic skills, which are already pretty amazing. As he refines his craft, he finds that upon returning to a favorite location, weather conditions change, the environment changes and his vision changes. “As a landscape photographer, I am inspired by the immense variety and beauty of landscapes across the US.” Michael remains active in a variety of photography clubs and competitions. A juried member of the Hamilton County Artists’ Association, he joined the Photographic Society of American-Worldwide (PSA) in 2017 and became PSA Treasurer in April 2019. He has won a number of awards in competitions, most recently being recognized for the second year in a row as a Top Ten Photographer in the Indiana State Fair competition. He was also awarded an artist’s distinction by the International Federation of Photographic Art and a recognition of photographic excellence by PSA. As a learner, turned teacher, he has given presentations for clubs and groups on composition, color management, printing, post processing and image analysis.

Envision a swarm of squirrels rampaging through fields, destroying crops, and scaring the locals. Sourcing several historic journals and diaries, Hamilton County Historian David Heighway compiled a list of several first-hand examples in an article he wrote for the Hamilton County East Public Library, “At one time this (Squirrel Stampede) was dismissed as folklore, but since Mr. Shirts’ parents were among the first settlers of Hamilton County, he probably heard it first-hand. Allowing for some discrepancy in dates, there are plenty of eyewitnesses to this flood of rodents, as well as modern scientific justification.”

lowers weren’t the only thing in bloom this past Earth Day weekend. Downtown Noblesville flourished with fairy activity during Nickel Plate Arts’ 10th Annual Welcome to Fairyville event.

Between new Fairyvlle After Dark specials and art activations, familiar family activities, and gorgeous weather it was a fairytale come true!

Nickel Plate Arts partnered with over 40 local and regional businesses to create and cultivate numerous activities throughout a 4-day period–all focused on activating downtown Noblesville businesses. From retail, food, service, or arts related business, each block had at least 1 business that participated in offering a class, special drink option, or special guest. We would not have been able to pull off such a unique and whimsical event without the help of our local businesses and sponsors. If you happen to be one of them, we are thankful for your commitment to engage with and support our efforts in creating a cultural arts district worth traveling to experience.

At any given moment, from Wednesday through Saturday, attendees could be seen in their best dressed fairy flare, taking in the view of the annual Fairy House building competition. All houses or series of structures–and even fairy islands and houseboats– consisted of mostly biodegradable materials and quite possibly the most amount of hot glue in any given square mile! All houses created and cultivated again by our local community of crafters, makers and artists. It takes a surrounding community to be active and participate in an arts district to make it a worthwhile endeavor and our citizens showed up in full force.

Several vendor booths consisting of local small business owners, makers, and artists were scattered at the first quarter of the trail as guests were led by a map of the entire downtown Noblesville area. You didn’t have to wander too far to be welcomed by any actor-lead engagements. A troll guarded the Logan Street bridge charging by the jig, joke, or song to continue on the trail. While the fairy-godmother made sure to share her magic and stories with any little fairy or foe along the way.

Our staff counted close to 870 visitors on our campus alone.

Visitors were able to grab a beer (Friday only, and over 21 years old of course) and purchase over 170 craft kids to build on site or take home. Face-painting, live music, dancing, and glass blowing were just a few of the featured activities to accompany the crafting on site.

According to the Americans for the Arts Economic impact calculator, based on attendance stats we collected, purchases made on site and other event related data, Welcome to Fairyville’s community impact created over $45,000 of expenditures (food, drink. shopping, etc) in downtown Noblesville!

While we’ve packed away all of our wings, glitter (though you can still find some in the Judge Stone house wood floor) and mossy tree houses, Nickel Plate Arts is looking ahead to ways we can continue to make a local impact in our arts and culture district and look forward to partnering with all of our downtown neighboring businesses and citizens for what could be our most successful Fairyville yet in 2023!
