hen I was a kid, I could spin in endless circles, fast and carefree. The world blurred by me, and I could feel the centrifugal forces pushing the blood into my outstretched fingertips. It was exhilarating and freeing and fun. I would drop into a dizzy heap, giggling and enjoying the rush of it all. It never made me sick to my stomach and, although I remember smacking into objects every now and then, I never felt in danger or out of control. It was just fun.

Now, spinning three-fourths of the way around in my desk chair too quickly makes me nauseous.

I know that sensitivity to motion sickness is something that can amplify as the years go by, but I can’t help but suspect that it’s more than that. Equilibrium, steady footing, and being able to see where I’m going are all things that are pretty important to me as an adult. Not only are they very soothing, but they are foundational to my sense of purpose, my self-confidence, and my decisionmaking. Without them, I get a little nauseous.

So, naturally, the last few months have been a challenge. I’ve had to pivot—to redirect my trajectory, my expectations, my approach to getting work done—so many times lately that I have often felt like I’m spinning in circles. Every now and then, I felt a little glimmer of that child-like exhilaration as I realized that I was up for the challenge, or that a new plan or approach was going to work. But more often, I’ve just felt tired and worried and dizzy.

I know that I am extremely fortunate. My loved ones have all stayed physically healthy, and, although we’ve had to rethink some of our earning

strategies, we’re also financially healthy. And through all of it, I’ve had a spotting point that has helped me stay emotionally healthy, too.

A spotting point is an object or an item that a dancer focuses on as they spin. Their body moves evenly through the turn, while their head stays forward and then spins around quickly, as their eyes snap back to focus on that point. Staying focused on a point helps them keep from getting too dizzy or unbalanced.

My spotting point has been Nickel Plate Arts, or, more specifically, all of the amazing people who make Nickel Plate Arts what it is. I’ve focused on my staff, making sure that they have what they need to stay healthy, safe, and ahead of their workload. I’ve focused on our artists, many of whom are creating amazing new work in response to this global pandemic, while others have been eager to share their normal work in a new way. And I have focused on our community, trying to get art supplies and projects into the hands of those who need them most.

That may seem like a plethora of points to focus on, but really, it’s all the same thing: I’ve been focusing on our collective love for the arts. The arts are what we turn to when we are overwhelmed, lonely, scared, or just bored. The arts help us make sense of the world, express our reactions, and celebrate our gifts. Whether it’s Netflix or a notebook, a simple sketch, or a song sung in isolation, I know that billions of us around the globe have found great solace in artistic pursuits as disease and uncertainty have swept across the planet.

I hope you can find comfort in belonging to this great, global creative continuum. I am certain that you have created something since mid-March—a wonderful meal, a great Instagram photo—and I am certain that you reveled in someone else’s creativity during that time, too. As a part of the Nickel Plate Arts community, I hope you’ve been able to take advantage of all of the wonderful resources our community has been generating (for more, see page 22).

If your thoughts have now turned to all of those members of our community who are isolated from the arts right now, either because of their health, finances, or other barriers, please know that there are important ways that you can help. Turn to page 15 to learn more about Emergency Art Kits, and 12 to make a donation to support Nickel Plate Arts’s mission.

The road ahead is still a twisting, winding blur and it is sure to have some intimidating challenges. We may stumble or go a little slower in the coming months, but we will make it through. We have a spotting point and we have each other, and I can’t imagine a better dance partner than you! And maybe, just maybe, once we all know that we’re safe again, we can recapture that child-like exhilaration as we continue to spin round and round.

Great art doesn’t have to command an entire wall or fill a whole gallery warehouse to be truly impressive! Nickel Plate Arts celebrates all things miniature in June’s show by highlighting works of truly “tiny” art. Whether you’re just beginning to build your art collection, are adding to an already impressive one, or simply love maker-type wares, this show offers the ability to acquire original, well-curated, small works of art!

JULY: TATTOO EXPO July 3-31

If art’s purpose is to challenge viewers—to make a statement or alter perception—then can’t a tattoo be considered art, too? Like most hotly-debated issues, the answer is subjective. However, as the stigma surrounding tattoos fades (studies show that one in five American adults has one), tattoo lovers approach their tattoos like fine art, collecting from a variety of artists much in the same way that art collectors amass canvases and sculptures. In the last century, tattooing has made its debut in galleries, museums, auctions, and conventions. July marks its exhibition at Nickel Plate Arts.

AUGUST: DREAMSCAPES & BELIEF August 7–31

In a dreamscape, which is a strange or mysterious landscape or scene often characteristic of dreams, there are no rules. Up can be down, color can be more or less vivid, physics and perspective can change with your mind’s will – your perception of the world is open to imagination! Dreams can help us process our abstract emotions, can be indicative of our belief systems, and can even teach us about ourselves and others. Nickel Plate Arts’ August show explores dreamscapes, all belief systems, and how art can connect us spiritually.

MARCH: BELINDA SHORT Belinda’s Mixed Media & Monsteys

Belinda Short is a fabulously imaginative ‘mixed media’ artist who also creates sculptures, paintings, digital art, jewelry, resin art, textile art, and more. From papercraft to more traditional art forms, she is truly diverse in style and media. Short has even forayed into bookmaking in the past and recently started making custom journal covers on pre-made books (taking on a series of book covers art projects).

Short draws inspiration in her efficient and sustainable art processes from her childhood. She says, “I grew up really, really poor, so when I’m not splurging on supplies I don’t need, I spend a lot of time trying to come up with ways to make things cheaply (and archivally if possible).” Short further describes her art process and style by calling most of her work “eviscera” art—a term she made up to represent the emotional combination of layered art that is truly meant to be interacted with.

Belinda is also a professional singer, often streaming performances along with her visual art practices for the world to enjoy. Short says, “I’ve been streaming art off and on for 13 years since streaming started being a thing. I love making art online and interacting.” Currently, Short is working on an augmented reality game to share via streaming as well. Stay tuned to her Mixer channel for updates!

MAY: MARIANNE GLICK Illusory Impressions Looking for a way to positively approach the winter months after a career in corporate training, Marianne Glick began painting in September of 2005. Her love of gardening inspired many of her early paintings. Most of her recent work is abstract. She often uses more than one medium in her work, combining watercolor, acrylic and some collage to create pieces that reflect her exuberant nature. “I have worked in a variety of media and am now focusing on acrylics. I enjoy the use of rich colors and textures in my work. Exploring the interplay between transparent & opaque, warm & cool, brush work and pouring fascinates me.” Her personal mission is to ignite, inspire and direct energy for positive action. Her paintings allow her to colorfully express her mission and hopefully bring joy to those who view them.

Marianne’s paintings have been accepted in juried competitions sponsored by the Hoosier Salon, California Art Day, Indianapolis Art Center, International Society of Acrylic Painters, International Society of Experimental Artists, Midwest Abstract National Exhibit, Watercolor Society of Indiana, and Women’s Works.

APRIL: TONY SCHILLACI Expressions Tony Schillaci has been a lifelong artist. As a seventh-grader, he started learning with his sister, who never stopped encouraging him to create.

In the early 70s as a Vietnam Veteran, Tony used his GI Bill to pay for undergraduate courses at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Schillaci says, “I was fortunate to have great teachers like Bill Parks, Irving Shapiro, and Douglas Graves.”

Today, Schillaci’s artistic goal is to fill in the missing gaps in life where he says he “forfeited art for family and business.” His complete focus for the last several years has been painting every day without fail, trying to improve bit by bit, in order to find “the masterpiece within.”

Schillaci’s show, “Expressions,” appeared online during month of April.

“Expressions” explored a series of oil portraits in which Tony has captured the expressions of politicians, entertainers, and everyday people.

He has always made things and believes it is important to do so. He says that “it’s one of the ways I enter into and participate in the world. Relationships are forged, moments are experienced, art is made.”

Thomas Dreesen Thomas has been an art director, graphic designer, and artist in Indianapolis for more than forty years. He graduated from Herron School of Art of Indiana University. He has worked at various design studios and advertising agencies and is now retired. Tom has been concentrating on fine art painting and other art projects as well as freelance design projects for the last few years.

Patricia McGriffin Pat McGriffin has been painting for over fifty years with a focus on animals, landscapes, and flowers. She has taken classes at The Herron School of Art and studied privately with Nicholas Logsdon, Paul Sweeney, Lynn Thomsen, and RoZelma Brown. From May through September 2019, her orchid paintings were the focus of a solo exhibit in The Office of the President of Butler University. Pat’s painting, White Orchid, was chosen from The Hoosier Women Artists 2020 juried exhibit to hang in The Indiana Governor’s Mansion for one year.

Sydney McQuade Otto Sydney’s relationship with the arts began with a gift of oil paints at the age of seven. Largely self-taught, Sydney has developed a style as unique as she is. Although her paintings follow no particular conventions, her work can be recognized by her soft melding of color. Texture, the use of light, and emanating emotion are all elements threaded throughout her body of work. Sydney was first introduced to abstract art through her uncle, Justin Snow, a noted abstract painter. His paintings hung on the walls of her childhood home, and he continues to be an important influence in Sydney’s painterly world. Workshops with Dublin painter Timothy Hawksworth encouraged exploration and opened doors to abstract expressionism.

JULY: SHELDON SHALLEY Reflections on Nature and the World Soul Sheldon began painting in 2001 in response to a dream in which he saw himself at a dinner where the host offered canvases and brushes in exchange for creating a painting.

Shalley recalls that “it was like the painting process I was using in the dream was instructing me on how I was to paint.” Adhering to his dreams’ suggestions, Shalley typically begins by painting several colors onto a canvas creating an undefined background. He then stares into the background until he sees an image emerging. He develops whatever he sees—a part of an animal, a bird’s beak, a nose, a person’s eyes, etc. He develops the images and allows the painting to emerge.

Sheldon is married to Betty, and both reside in Noblesville. Besides his busy psychotherapy practice and hours spent painting, Sheldon conducts a Shaman Circle and participates in various workshops and trainings in Shamanic healing and energy medicine. He is active in both Nickel Plate Arts and the Hamilton County Artist Association. You may see more of Sheldon’s art at artbyshalley. com.

Please join Sheldon for his July exhibit at Nickel Plate Arts titled “Reflections on Nature and the World Soul.” The show explores the animating spirit that inhabits all nature, connecting it into one organism of divine intelligence.

Shalley explains that “The World Soul” can be understood as an energetic web that connects all of life and the spirit that lives in all things whether that be a stone, a tree, a river, a blade of grass, a butterfly, an animal, an organ in the body or the Earth herself. The pieces in this exhibit are chosen from a group of paintings Sheldon did in the past year in response to dreams and images met in meditation and in shamanic journeys that reflect images of Nature and the World Soul.

AUGUST: MICHAEL JACK Maine to Palouse Michael Jack is an incredible local photographer full of passionate stories to tell.

While he is a longtime lover of photography, he has also always had an interest in automobiles and racing. He struggled historically to keep up with both art and racing hobbies at the same time, so he decided to focus on automobiles for almost 25 years.

After his retirement in 2008, he found time to devote to photography once more. Realizing what he had for so long missed, Jack decided that photography would be the focal point of his passions moving forward! Now Michael is an active participant in several organizations that embrace the art of photography.

Jack is a member of Nickel Plate Arts, a juried member of the Hamilton County Artists’ Association, and participates in several photography clubs. He is currently Treasurer of the Photographic Society of America- Worldwide. In 2019, the accomplished Michael Jack even won “Top 10 Photographer” award from the Indiana State Fair.

He says, “I continually try to improve on being more creative and not let my finance background cause me to merely ‘record’ an image.” As such, Jack enjoys traveling to different areas and capturing the essence of landscapes in his work. His artistic goal is to provide his audience with a sense of place and an appreciation for a view, especially if that view details a story of “beauty and decay.”

Jack will explore this theme in his upcoming August showcase at Nickel Plate Arts. His images will traverse iconic lighthouses, rugged seashores, peculiar and picturesque hills, and abandoned barns and homes.

Back Porch Beauty by John Dierdorf

SEPTEMBER: JOHN DIERDORF John Dierdorf is the definition of modern impressionism. His abstract impressionist methods emerged as his preferred style and definition of work with the use of loose, spontaneous brushstrokes to capture the essence of a subject.

Dierdorf says, “Spending time in the garden or taking in the scenic landscape from the back porch provides inspiration for new works as my painting style continues to evolve.”

His preferred medium is boldly colored acrylics. When possible, he enjoys blending subtle tones to create an interesting expression that includes architectural elements, trees, and flowers. Dierdorf draws inspiration from several painters including Robert Indiana, Monet, Miro, Kandinsky, and Pollock.

His passions for architecture indeed stem from his architecture studies at Ball State University. There he learned not only how to create buildings, functional interiors, and exterior spaces between and around buildings but also how to be a curious observer of his surroundings and how light and shadow impart character. Those lessons all provided a great foundation for his current painting projects, not just his architecture career!

OCTOBER: SHAKILA GARUGU Shakila Garugu is a self-taught artist and art instructor who believes in the importance of self-expression. Although she utilized her left-brain talents to receive her masters in mathematics, she later was inspired to focus on her right-brain talents by her mother’s art. She found a passion for painting and has since continued to create artwork for the last twenty-four years. Shakila’s dynamic works capture both humans and animals. Each of her works is highly detailed and features areas of interest throughout the composition.

Her intent in doing this she says is to “lead the viewer’s eyes to wander in different directions.” Her preferred media choices traverse oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, and pencil. Shakila’s art these days is mostly realistic in nature consisting of portraits, landscapes, and figures.

Garugu currently teaches art to children and adults in both Fishers and Carmel. She has also inspired her two daughters, Shruthi and Neha, to carry on her passion of art. She originally started her art career in India, but has worked in or displayed her paintings in Arizona, California, Connecticut, and Indiana as well. Shakila says that no matter where she is, “whenever I can, I immerse myself into my passion of art. It gives me a reason to live as it makes life more colorful!”

In October 2020, Shakila will have an exhibit at Nickel Plate Arts in the Stephenson House Gallery that features a broad collection of her work from her oils and acrylics to watercolors and charcoals. She says that she is grateful for Nickel Plate Arts and this exhibition opportunity “because it has given me a platform to showcase and appreciate art.

Along with giving me the opportunity to display my art to many people, I have had the honor to meet many wonderful artists as well. [Nickel Plate Arts] is a great blessing for artists who are looking to grow in a safe and supportive community.”

CRAIG W. MULLINS & SHERRY HAINES “NEIGHBORS” Nickel Plate Arts is thrilled to announce a joint showcase, “Neighbors”, in the Meyer Najem Gallery for the months of May and June celebrating the work of Craig Mullins and Sherry Haines. Read more about the artists below, in their own words!

CRAIG W. MULLINS “My training as an architect can be seen in my paintings. This art is focused on subject matter, composition and color with acrylic paints and pastels on large canvases. While I paint wildlife, floral, and portraits, my primary interest is painting landscapes.

Many of these landscape paintings have architectural elements as part of the context such as farm and barn compositions as well as images from travel and hiking experiences all over the world.

Much of this work tends to be precise relative to the building subject, contrasted with a loose expression in the landscape elements of trees, ground texture, water and sky. I am very intrigued with the creation of a mood of time, space and color that cannot be captured in a photograph.

“I am particularly drawn to French Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet and the Hoosier Artists who flourished in the early 1900s as well as contemporary landscape artists. Much of their work tends to be landscapes that explore light, color and the atmosphere of the moment in a way that compels your attention for long periods of time. That is what I am trying to achieve in my own way as an ARCHITECT-ARTIST.”

SHERRY HAINES “I developed an interest in the visual arts at an early age. That interest grew and became more intense during my high school years and while pursuing a Bachelor’s in Art Education at Taylor University and a Masters in Art Education at Ball State University. With each new drawing and painting course I became more aware of my own desire to teach painting and to pursue my personal interests in this medium.

“Following my collegiate years, I taught art at public and private schools for thirty years, concluding my service in the classroom with an eighteen-year tenure at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis. During those wonderful years, I had the joy of instructing and guiding many very talented students who have gone on to successful, creative carriers in the arts. Daily these students inspired and challenged me. After an extremely rewarding career in the classroom, I now find myself with the time and desire to pursue my first love of art: painting. I look forward to getting involved with the painting community of greater Indianapolis and the State of Indiana.

Michael McGuire’s backstory as an artist is a poignant one. On October 10, 2015, Michael was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with Dural Venous Sinus Thrombosis, a very rare brain bleed. Two days later, he was rushed into emergency surgery to reduce severe swelling and pressure on his brain by removing a portion of his skull (decompressive craniectomy). This surgery although scary saved his life. Michael had to start anew, learning how to walk and eat again. Since this monumental brain injury, Michael has developed Aphasia, which means that Michael knows what he wants to say but has trouble thinking of the right words to communicate. While communication is difficult for Michael, his wife Megan helps him work through this, and art gives him a medium to communicate with others.

Michael discovered his hidden talent for painting one year after this journey began. He has a creative eye for color. Megan, his wife, says that his ability to paint such beautiful artwork is simply amazing, and a true blessing!

Michael has been painting for about four years now, largely in acrylic media and styles on canvas. His creative process begins with only a rough idea of what he wants to paint. McGuire then picks the right size canvas and colors of paint, letting his subject matter guide him. He draws inspiration from many different things, painting whatever he is thinking or feeling. His wife Megan says, “sometimes he will pause a TV show we are watching to admire a painting in the background or wander away from me to look at a painting on the wall if we are out somewhere together.”

Dan Howell’s clay work began when he was a boy, making sculptures on the creek banks near the source of the White River on his father’s farm in central Indiana. With encouragement from his high school art teacher, he continued his foray into clay. He first earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Ball State University, did some study and work in France for a year, and then continued to receive a master’s degree in sculpture and ceramics from Ball State University.

Dan proceeded to teach art in a wide variety of forms for forty-five years in three different Indiana high schools. His work has now come full circle with a ceramic studio at his home on the banks of the White River in Noblesville.

Currently his style involves the interplay of natural images and geometric patterns. He enjoys using natural images and relating and/or contrasting them in compositions with simplified geometric patterns.

Not content with one form, Dan has explored a range of media including fiber, carved wood and stone, and cast and welded metals. He has practical furniture and fanciful lawn sculpture in his body of work as well. His clay pieces range from functional wheel-thrown porcelain to hand-built stoneware and abstract sculpture. Dan’s work spans fifty years and has been shown in collections both locally and internationally.

s I write this, it’s day fifty of our state-mandated shelter-inplace order. The order, led by Governor Eric Holcomb, began on March 25. When each day feels like a week and many days we can’t even guess which day of the week it is, how do we respond? With many businesses shut down and thousands of Hoosiers out of work, how does the artist community reach an audience of potential patrons? During this unprecedented global pandemic, each of us has faced a unique set of complicated challenges. Yet, even during the time of COVID-19, the art goes on.

Probably my biggest step was returning to teach art, as I have not offered art classes for several years, and doing so virtually in a Facebook Live event hosted and arranged by Nickel Plate Arts.

DRAWING A PAYCHECK We touched on art’s power to meet and even heal our emotional needs (see Korie Pickett’s article on page 19), but for many artists in the Nickel Plate Arts network, art is also a significant source of income. The business of art has its ups and downs, but certainly, nobody expected something to come along that would bring our collective sense of normality to a screeching halt. I queried some of the artists in the Nickel Plate network about how they have adapted their art and art businesses to the new reality of life in the age of coronavirus.

What I learned is not only that each artist has his own unique set of circumstances, but I couldn’t help but notice a theme of stubborn resilience among the group. I asked the artists how COVID-19 has affected each of the artist’s businesses. Michael Janosky, one of Nickel Plate Arts’ studio artists, reflected on the challenge of sharing art online as opposed to in-person. “There are subtleties, richness, and a depth to my work in my medium of oil painting that cannot be adequately conveyed virtually,” Janosky remarked. “For it to be truly appreciated, it needs to be seen in person. This has not been possible recently with my studio’s Nickel Plate Arts campus suspending visits, galleries closing temporarily or

permanently, and art fairs canceled or postponed due to the pandemic.

I have also not been able to personally interact with patrons and tell my story and explain my work. For me, I believe this lost interaction has been the most difficult part.”

Several artists in the Nickel Plate Arts network expressed a high level of disappointment due to closures of previously scheduled exhibitions and events. Krista Darrow, our 2019 Emerging Artist of the Year, had “three exhibitions including a solo exhibit at the Ignite Studio in Fishers.”

Photographer Frederick Durham echoed Krista’s sentiments: “COVID-19 has affected my art business a lot. It has definitely slowed down and kind of put everything in a complete stop and made it harder to keep a constant business flow.”

ON! DRAWING FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE Here’s what I’ve noticed: these artists have a killer combination of perseverance combined with a keen willingness to adjust their previously tried-and-true approaches to reaching clients. While Darrow has drawn on resources including social media and Zoom workshops for ideas, Frederick Durham is relying on his strong work ethic to come up with new ways to produce work and continue to get business.

For Beth Forst, it’s all about mindset. “I have kept the idea of positive growth and creative energy abundance alive. By goal setting, I have a one-year plan and a five-year plan to work through.”

This was a perfect time to feel the changes, and realize that a recreation of Beth Forst was staring me in the face.

Beth, whose studio is in the white house two doors down from Nickel Plate Arts’ campus on South 8th Street in Downtown Noblesville, has adjusted her perspective on this time to become one of personal and creative renewal, albeit a forced renewal. “As I was returning from a Florida tour of art festivals and awaiting the spring/summer/fall schedule of Midwestern shows, I kept receiving festival cancelations,” Forst reported. “Art was taking a sabbatical. I was taking a sabbatical!! This was a perfect time to feel the changes, and realize that a recreation of Beth Forst was staring me in the face. I need a haircut and a new vision of art.”

DRAWING A CROWD Our artists, like the rest of us, have been forced to adapt. They’ve been forced to attempt a different approach during a time when we can’t view art in person. So, where have they found clients over the past few months? As uncomfortable as it is for everyone, our artists have found opportunities on the outskirts of their comfort zones.

Frederick Durham has adjusted by upgrading his Photoshop skills so he can offer collages and scrapbook-like photos for his clients.

“With that it allows me to work freely and express my creativity and it also gives my clients a chance to take part in the project as well.”

Durham continued, “I also will be trying something new—I am going to produce a series of three abstract paintings. It’s way outside of my comfort zone, but I’m excited to try it and be able to share it with the world and my clients.”

Beth Forst has used some of her time to take online marketing classes in order to avail herself to an online audience. “I am changing and a better expression of myself is both an idea and a process. I am okay with being outside the box. That is where the best ideas come from.”

Like Forst, Michael Janosky has explored an online approach to finding clients. “My website was a bit neglected, but no longer!

I’m working with social media more and learning to use tools to design posts. I participated in virtual First Friday for the first time in May. Probably my biggest step was returning to teach art, as I have not offered art classes for several years, and doing so virtually in a Facebook Live event hosted and arranged by Nickel Plate Arts.

Ultimately, I am optimistic and continuing to invest in myself and my business as an artist.”

Michael Janosky’s outlook remains positive. “I believe people will continue to appreciate artistic expression and beautiful objects, perhaps even more than before,” he noted. “I’m not sure how this will translate into sales and income for artists. The market and venues may change, some customers may not return, new customers will emerge, and new income sources may be established. Artists will continue to make art, but will also have to think both more actively and differently about how to reach a market.”

Yes, artists will continue to make art. Nickel Plate Arts hopes to continue to be a resource where artists can learn what is working, what isn’t working, and how we can implement best practices for reaching our potential audience. This act of digital outreach will undoubtedly become an important discipline for successful artists in the year 2020 and beyond. It is possible to make new connections, even when we feel like we’re being forced to innovate and adapt. We hope that you continue to stay connected to the Nickel Plate Arts network of artists, patrons, partners and creative entrepreneurs so that we can continue to sharpen each other’s approaches. With this communal approach— rooting for each other—we hope that each of us can realize our fullest artistic potential.

Kits for adults and teens were organized by medium, including a drawing kit, an illustration kit, a watercolor kit, a soft pastel kit, and an oil pastel kit. Kits for kids and tweens included an array of media - drawing pencils, colored pencils, markers, watercolor paints, oil pastels and a sketch pad - all the basics needed for artistic fun!

Nickel Plate Arts worked with local service organizations and schools to distribute the kits. Prevail, the Shepherd Center, and Janus distributed art kits, projects and supplies to their clients, and Nickel Plate worked with teachers at Noblesville, Hamilton Heights, and Hamilton South Eastern schools and Trustee’s offices to distribute the materials. In all, over 200 individuals received art supplies through this project.

oday is May 1. And day forty-six, for me of this—quarantine, unemployment—whatever you call this moment in time. I’ve done a lot of writing or actual video recordings over the past forty-six days, mostly to check in with how I’m doing. For me, it’s super vital to check in with myself, process things and be completely honest and transparent even with myself about how I’m feeling—mentally, emotionally, and physically. That’s really what keeps me grounded. I have kept my sanity through all of this through a lot of stretching, a lot of writing, a lot of self-talk, a lot of meditating and— most importantly—a lot of creating.

Creativity has kept me alive my entire life. Creating has been my source of feeling at home wherever I might be at any given time. It’s what brings me back to the reality and true nature of who I am. And it’s also sustained me financially through all of this. I worked one day a week as a barista before all of this happened, and I have yet to receive any unemployment benefits due to the gravity of the situation and everyone else who also is also waiting.

So, the only way that I’ve been able to survive financially is by continually creating content and creating the community that I needed so desperately two years ago and still need desperately to this day.

I created Queen Spirit magazine out of desperation. Originally, I needed a community where I could feel safe and heard and seen. So I created one issue of the magazine. It started as a digital platform and now just released the third print publication.

Selling those issues has been keeping me afloat as well as making jewelry.

I specifically work in metal and I’ve found that hammering out my feelings has been very therapeutic and very necessary. I’ve been experiencing a lot of anger in this time and a lot of resentment for plans I had that can no longer be. Yesterday, I was struggling because I should have been flying home from New York City after working in New York for a month with the Tribeca Film Festival, which is a gig that I look forward to every year. That’s a gig that carries me, financially, for three to four months. And that was something I had to just let go of and accept that that’s gone. And I don’t like the words “new normal” because there is nothing normal about any of this, even though it’s new. It just isn’t for me.

create a habit. Well, this has been forty-six days, so everything in life is about habits right now—staying inside these days, doing the same things just in a different order, day in and day out.

Those are my habits these days.

Making sure that I’m kind to myself is essential.

Making sure that I’m creating and staying true to what I believe my purpose is, is essential.

Unfortunately, I feel that people support artists quicker and easier in person. So without being able to do the pop-up shops where people get to genuinely know me and know my heart, and while they might love my work, they end up wanting to support because they love who I am.

I hope that I am able to create the same impact digitally. I hope that my energy can transcend everything that’s happening right now and that creativity will continue to carry me. And I believe that is what’s going to happen.

One thing that I think has always gotten people through the hardest times in the world is art and creativity. Artists are the gatekeepers of truth. I don’t think that’s a quote that is so famous for no reason. Artists are the ones who show the impact in a visual and tangible way. We are able to be transparent and speak to the emotions of others that may not be able to convey those emotions themselves.

That is an honor and a privilege and also a very exhausting job, but it’s one that I personally will continue to choose day in and day out. Without creativity, without writing, I don’t know that I’d be here to live to tell about everything that’s happening right now. So I think that it’s our duty, as artists, to continue to show up in the world however we can, whether that’s painting, writing or music.

So, yeah, as you can see, art is my therapy. Creativity is what heals me and it just feels like a really huge blessing to be able to wake up every day and create despite the circumstances going on in the world. It feels like an honor and a privilege to be able to create with my hands and make some things from nothings or to repurpose silverware that people have thrown out into rings that can make you feel special and adorned in a moment where you might feel small and unseen. I will never take it lightly. The privilege, the honor, and the purpose that has been placed upon me—creativity—is everything. I’m thankful to be an artist in this world. I’m thankful to be alive in a time where we need a lot of healing.

I hope that whatever the other side of all of this looks like that there will be so many beautiful stories told, that there will be so many incredible images to behold, and some really incredible books to be read. Thanks for hanging, reading and I hope that you’ve been affirmed or at least feel less alone in this crazy thing we call life.

WHITE RIVER SOUND CHORUS White River Sound Chorus is a community of women representing a wide range of age and experiences. We join our voices in song. Standing on the risers as 35 members, and always accepting new singers to the fold, we blend our voices and performances to a wide range of musical arrangements, keeping to the tradition of barbershop harmony. We are a strong force of friendship and support to one another, as well as a sublime source of fun. Together we escape everyday stresses by adding the fresh breath of singing to our lives.
