Tracing their journey from 19th century Ireland to pioneer life on the Wabash and Erie and the Whitewater Canal, Hyatt braids together one story from three strands. She inter-weaves her great-great grandmothers’ stories with her own: how rediscovering these strong women changed her life. To further honor her heritage, Hyatt’s performance will include Celtic harp accompaniment in the tradition of Irish bards.

About Liza Hyatt Liza is an art therapist at the Charis Center for Eating Disorders, and she teaches at Herron School of Art and St. Mary of the Woods College. In 2003, Liza received her first Frank Basile Emerging Stories Fellowship to develop the story Through John Muir’s Eyes. She is the author of several books, including The Mother Poems (Indianapolis, IN: Chatter House Press, 2014), which she wrote during the last five years of her mother’s life. Most recently, she received a 2017 Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis.

In addition to being a delightful raconteur of mountain life, Sheila is an accomplished clawhammer style banjo player. Her artistry conveys a powerful sense of family and place.

Born in Boston to a Cuban father and Irish-American mother, Antonio Sacre is an internationally touring

bilingual storyteller, author and solo performance artist, based in Los Angeles.

He has performed at the National Book Festival at the Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, the National Storytelling Festival, and museums, schools, libraries, and festivals internationally. Called “a charismatic, empathetic presence” by the Chicago Tribune, his stories have appeared in numerous magazines and journals, as well as on National Public Radio.

The Litta Grand Opera Company from Chicago performed to a packed house of 500. The opera house was in constant use—often with two or three performances per week—but by the 1910s the Delphi Opera House was showing its age. Motion picture theaters were coming into vogue and third-floor performance spaces were losing appeal. The final blow came in 1914, when the Delphi Opera House was condemned as an unsafe structure.

Eighty-two years later, the Delphi Preservation Society purchased the building and began the long journey of restoring the historic theater to its previous glory.

Indiana Landmarks and Storytelling Arts of Indiana developed the If These Walls Could Tell series in 2011 with generous support from Frank and Katrina Basile. These original stories inspired by historical Indiana buildings are about the people who have built, lived, worked, gathered and restored these vintage places.

About David Matlack David Matlack attended his first storytelling event in 1990, where he heard Jay O’Callahan. He found himself slowly introducing the use of stories while visiting schools as a veterinarian. Many years later he continues to tell stories as a member of the Bloomington Storytellers Guild. David won first place at the 2016 Liar’s Contest, told ghost stories at Crown Hill Cemetery and told an Indiana State Park adventure for Two Truths and a Lie at Pokagon State Park and McCormick’s Creek State Park during the summer of 2017. David is on the faculty of the IU School of Medicine in Bloomington and is a breeder of fine Arabian horses.

Award-winning storyteller Barbara McBride-Smith breathes life—albeit a wizened Texan version—into the old Greek myths. With her incurable Texas drawl, she spins the Greek myths as you’ve never heard them before, rendering them 99% more fun while retaining 100% of their original insights into the crooked ways of the human heart—and the no-less crooked ways of the ancient Greek gods.

About Barbara McBride-Smith Barbara McBride-Smith grew up in Waco, Texas, was educated in Boston, Massachusetts, discovered the ways of the world on the New Jersey shore, and settled down in Oklahoma for three decades. Over those years she served more than 25,000 students as a school librarian and was named the Oklahoma School Librarian of the Year in 2007.

Simultaneously she held the position of adjunct instructor at Phillips Theological Seminary, mentoring pastors in the art of storytelling for ministry. In the fall of 2014, Barbara made her way home to Texas, becoming once again a bona fide Texan living on Galveston Island.

During this two part series, our presenters Sally Perkins and Ellen Dunnigan will guide participants through a process that will help them understand the value of telling stories of their business or not-for-profit. Participants will learn how to identify their target audience(s) as well as the purpose in telling their story to that particular audience(s). Participants will learn the elements of effective stories as they discover and shape at least one great story about their business or not-for-profit.

During the second session, participants will refine the stories generated in session one. The focus will be specifically on the “oral� telling of stories, knowing that if you can tell your story orally, you can then translate it to effective digital and written formats. Participants will also learn and practice some specific, easy-to-implement techniques to tell the story orally for maximum impact.
