BUILDING TOMORROW'S LEADERS: ALEXANDRIA-FAIRFAX ALUMNI CHAPTER'S SUPPORT AT ACPS MENTORING EVENT

Earlier this year the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) held a transformative event, "Your Future Today," dedicated to nurturing and empowering young Black males through mentorship. This initiative was a crucial part of ACPS's "Equity for All" strategy, specifically designed to address and support the unique needs of Black male students in grades 6-12. The Alexandria-Fairfax Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, played a vital role in bolstering this noble cause.

A Day of Empowerment and Education

The event unfolded on February 24, 2024, at Alexandria City High School, formerly known as T.C. Williams High School. It began with a hearty breakfast and inspiring opening remarks from ACPS Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt and School Board Member Christopher Harris, brother of the Alexandria-Fairfax Alumni Chapter. Their messages of hope and encouragement set a motivational tone for the day, resonating deeply with the young attendees.

3

Learning and Engagement

The day featured a panel of esteemed speakers, all alumni of the host high school, who shared their personal journeys and successes. Their stories, filled with both inspiration and practical advice, captivated the audience and sparked a lively Q&A session, offering young students actionable insights and guidance.

Dominic Turner, ACPS Chief Financial Officer, led a hands-on session focusing on career development and financial literacy— crucial areas for young adults as they navigate their futures. Additionally, Crystal Bailey from the Etiquette Institute of Washington conducted an interactive class on etiquette, emphasizing the importance of social skills in achieving personal and professional success.

Mentorship and Connection

Throughout the day, over 40 students had the chance to engage with mentors from the community and the Alexandria-Fairfax Alumni Chapter These interactions provided students with valuable advice and helped form supportive relationships, essential for their personal and academic growth.

Impact and Support

ACPS data highlight that Black male students often face disproportionate challenges, including higher rates of disciplinary actions and academic disparities. Events like "Your Future Today" are critical in addressing these issues by fostering strong mentor-mentee relationships. These connections leverage community, family, and cultural strengths to enhance students' potential and success.

Community Contributions

The event received significant support from the Alexandria-Fairfax Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and the Community Praise Church of Seventh-day Adventists. These contributions underscore the community's role in supporting educational initiatives and reflect a collective commitment to uplifting young Black males in Alexandria.

A Lasting Impact

"Your Future Today" was more than just a day-long program; it was a pivotal part of a broader initiative aimed at creating lasting impacts in the lives of young Black males. By equipping them with the tools, skills, and networks necessary for success, the event laid a foundation for their future achievements. As the day concluded, the sense of hope and possibility lingered, promising brighter futures for the young men of Alexandria.

Elegance and Altruism: The Alexandria-Fairfax KSEF and David Yurman Fundraising Event

Nestled in the heart of the city, the boutique was abuzz with anticipation. Luxury met philanthropy in an exclusive fundraiser at David Yurman in City Center DC orchestrated by the Alexandria-Fairfax Kappa Scholarship Endowment Fund (AF KSEF) in partnership with the esteemed jeweler. This unique and specially curated shopping experience and fundraiser was more than a shopping event; it was a testament to the power of community and corporate collaboration, underscoring AF KSEF’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities for young men in Northern Virginia.

A Luxurious Collaboration

On April 20, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the jewelry boutique became a beacon of generosity and style. Brother Philip L. Thomas, AF KSEF Board of Directors had meticulously orchestrated the event, ensuring that 10% of all sales during those two hours would be funneled directly into the scholarship fund. The allure of David Yurman's exquisite jewelry, paired with a noble cause, drew a generous crowd eager to contribute. The patrons, each with their own story, found themselves united by a common purpose as they perused glittering displays, knowing their purchases would pave the way for the education of promising young scholars.

5

The Impact

As the afternoon sun began its descent, the results were nothing short of extraordinary. Over $44,000 in sales were generated in just two hours, a figure that spoke volumes about the community's support and enthusiasm for AF KSEF's mission. Each purchase transcended the realm of material acquisition, becoming an investment in the future of Northern Virginia's youth.

Media Spotlight

Adding to the day's prestige was the presence of FOX5 DC, capturing the event's essence through the lens of seasoned journalist Guy Lambert. An interview with AF KSEF Vice President Brother Marcel Dixon and Brother Philip L. Thomas offered viewers a deeper understanding of the scholarship fund's enduring impact. Lambert, a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., brought a personal touch to the coverage, highlighting the fraternity's unwavering commitment to service and excellence. This media exposure not only elevated the event's profile but also extended its reach to potential new supporters and advocates, amplifying the impact of the day's efforts.

A Testament to Collaboration

The partnership between AF KSEF and David Yurman stands as a shining example of how luxury brands and charitable organizations can collaborate to achieve remarkable outcomes. The success of the exclusive shopping experience and fundraiser underscores the potential of such alliances to generate substantial support for crucial causes. As AF KSEF continues to champion educational opportunities, events like this are pivotal in ensuring that young men in Northern Virginia have the resources they need to pursue their academic and professional dreams. With the steadfast support of the community and corporate partners, the future indeed looks bright for the beneficiaries of AF KSEF’s efforts.

The Inaugural Forum of Senior Executives & Military Officers

AT THE INTERSECTION OF LEADERSHIP AND LEGACY:
7

The inner sanctums of the Tower Club in Tysons Corner recently played host to the first Senior Executives & Military Officers Mentoring and Leadership Forum, organized by the Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. This gathering, marked by its high intentions and the caliber of its attendees, was just the beginning of the chapter's ambitious membership strategy aimed at strengthening professional and leadership development for its members.

A Confluence of Visionaries

The event was shepherded by the astute leadership of Brothers Lieutenant General (Retired) Les Smith, Dr. Rodney Edge, Mark E. Sparger, and Geoffery Coleman. Brother Smith, a Laurel Wreath Designee and Retired Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army, holds the highest honor in Kappa Alpha Psi. The room was filled with the energy of entrepreneurs, business leaders, military officers, and young professionals from diverse fields like logistics, engineering, bioscience, and technology, each bringing to the table their distinguished perspectives. The diversity was not just in their professions but in their ideas, creating a vibrant tapestry of discourse.

The Exchange

This was no ordinary networking event. The forum was charged with a palpable intensity as it cut to the core of professional growth and leadership. The discussions ventured beyond the surface of typical business dialogue, touching on the profound implications of mentorship and the deep, often personal, motivations driving each participant's professional journey.

The Charge

Understanding the importance of ongoing support, the brothers implemented a structured follow-up system involving 90-day check-ins. These are critical touchpoints designed to nurture the fledgling mentor-mentee relationships developed at the forum. The regular social interactions planned around these check-ins are not merely social but strategic, reinforcing the bonds formed and the commitments made.

8

Driving Membership Growth and Development

This event was the first of many, forming a cornerstone of the chapter's strategy to strengthen the value proposition for the brothers in the chapter. The chapter's membership strategy has already caused a 900% increase in recent graduate growth, underscoring the need to provide leadership development opportunities to new brothers joining the chapter. Dr. Rodney Edge, a key player in this program, brings his extensive leadership experience as a retired colonel from the U.S. Army and the private sector, further enhancing the initiative's impact.

The Legacy of the Forum

The commitment demonstrated by the forum’s participants and organizers promises a future where these leaders not only succeed in their fields but also pave the way for others to follow. This is the legacy of the forum—a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and continuous personal growth that extends far beyond the walls of any single event.

As the forum concluded, it was clear that the seeds of future success had been sown. The participants left with new knowledge, renewed purpose, and the inspiration to forge ahead, embodying the spirit of #AlwaysFirst.

Following the enriching discussion, the Beaus transitioned into a hands-on necktie and bowtie class, led by the dedicated AF coaches of the chapter. This session was not merely about knots and styles but was a metaphorical tying of tradition with modernity, as these young men refined their sartorial skills, preparing to present themselves with class in various societal settings.

Understanding the Beautillion

For those new to the concept, the Beautillion is not just an event, but a significant rite of passage for young men transitioning into adulthood. Here, Tommy graduated from Fort Hunt High School in 1975, ready to carve out his own path.

Service and Sacrifice

Tommy's commitment to service was evident early on. He attended Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Finance Corps through ROTC.
