The 2026 edition of the French May Cinema Programme celebrates cinema in all its forms. We offer a diverse selection of French films presented in two sections: The Cinema of Marguerite Duras and The Art of French Comedy: 2026 Edition.
Celebrating the 30 th anniversary of Marguerite Duras’ passing, The Cinema of Marguerite Duras is co-presented with Broadway Cinematheque, which also celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. We joined forces to introduce six long features directed by the renowned French novelist and playwright. It comprises four adaptations of her own novels and plays, as well as two original works. For this special occasion, we also collaborate with the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society’s Cinefan (May-July 2026), which will present six films based on Marguerite Duras’ scripts.
Showcasing the eclecticism of new French comedies, The Art of French Comedy presents six films of 2026. “The Better Me” is a scathing critique of this urge to constantly compare oneself to goals set by society. “Tough Luck”, directed by Gérard Jugnot, who we welcomed in Hong Kong at the end of 2025 for the 54th HKFFF.
“Family Price” (Asian Premiere) is based on a play that was performed in Hong Kong in 2024.
“Murder in the Building” is a crime comedy with Hitchcockian overtones. “Police Flash 80” is a cop comedy set in the 1980s, and “Marsupilami”, which cumulated 6 million at the box office in France, is based on the comic book character created by André Franquin.
Last but not least, in collaboration with Intercontinental Hong Kong, we will be screening "Santiago, The Camino Therapy" exclusively, it will be released in Hong Kong later this year.

THE CINEMA OF MARGUERITE DURAS

Contrary to her contemporaries of post1968 cinema, such as Agnes Varda and Chantal Akerman, Marguerite Duras was already a successful novelist when she made her directorial debut. Following her first screenplay with "Hiroshima, Mon Amour" (1959), she spent ten years working as a screenwriter on film adaptations of her own novels. In her mid-fifties, she directed her first features, "La Musica" (1967) and "Destroy, She Said" (1969), and continued to develop an inimitable style over her next 25 years of filmmaking.
This series presents four adaptations of her own novels and plays: “La Musica” (1967), “Destroy, She Said” (1969), “Yellow The Sun” (1972) and “India Song” (1975) - as well as two original works: “Nathalie Granger” (1972) and “La Navire Night” (1978).

On vacation at a quiet hotel surrounded by a lush green forest, married couple Max and Alissa become fast friends with two new arrivals. Elisabeth Alione is coping with a recent miscarriage and seems detached from her wealthy husband, Bernard, while aspiring novelist Stein grows increasingly besotted with the lovely Alissa. The film focuses on themes of identity dissolution, political allegory, and psychological manipulation.

"India Song" is a modernist drama set in 1930s colonial India, focusing on Anne-Marie Stretter, the bored wife of a French diplomat, who engages in multiple affairs. The film is characterised by its non-synchronous sound and image, where disembodied voices narrate the action while characters remain silent, embodying ennui, colonial decay, and tragic romantic despair.

A man returns to his hometown right after his wife has finalised their divorce in this brow-beating psychological drama. The two argue over their past relationship, a union marred by mutual infidelity, and a young American woman on a tour of France has the misfortune to run into the depressing ex-husband.
The film does not tell a story. It relates the event of one afternoon in a house where a man, two women and two children lived. A camera zooms in on a house. It is an afternoon in springtime. A woman walks along, returning from the fields. A child is sleeping beneath a tree. Near the child, a man smiles at the woman who approches him...

"Le Navire Night" is an experimental film about an anonymous telephone romance between a man and a woman who never meet. Set against a backdrop of nocturnal Paris, they communicate via unlisted lines left over from the German occupation. The film is a dreamlike exploration of desire, language, and profound loneliness, often using voiceover narration while showing empty cityscapes or actors preparing to film..

In a single room, a woman named Sabana leads a tense dialogue between three men who embody conflicting ideologies: a workers' activist, an authoritarian supporter, and a "Jew," representing the excluded. The story unfolds almost entirely through conversation, gradually revealing the characters' doubts and leading them toward an unexpected, tenuous common ground.
Adam is a teenager who’s lost and heading in the wrong direction. A judge gives him a surprising choice: walk 800 kilometres on the Camino de Santiago to think about his future. He sets off with Fred, a tough and outspoken woman. Together, they go on a journey that could change their lives. She is looking to heal from her past; he is struggling to channel his anger and feelings of abandonment. With every mile traveled and each encounter — amid clashes, exhaustion, and moments of peace — a bond gradually forms between the two walkers, and each discovers their unsuspected inner strength. But will it be enough to achieve their goals?
In France, we love a good laugh. French comedies consistently top the box office charts and are hugely popular. Some of their most famous lines have entered everyday language. 2026 is no exception. To the extent that the 79 th Cannes Film Festival selected a French comedy directed by Pierre Salvadori for its opening film. We gathered six new comedies with specific twists:
• "Family Price", an adaptation of the play that gathered more than 400,000 people in the French theatres
• "The Better Me", a fantasy thriller and social critique comedy
• " Tough Luck", directed by no less than Gérard Jugnot, our guest of honour for the 54th Hong Kong French Film Festival (2025)
• "Murder in the Building", a Hitchcockian crime comedy
• "Police Flash 80", a comedy set in the 1980s with crooked police officers and their dubious methods
• "Mar supilami", the biggest comedy hit of the first half of 2026
