FOREWORD 前言 As the newly appointed Consul General of France to Hong Kong, I am honoured to write this foreword for the Hong Kong French Film Festival. As many of you know, this legendary festival is the oldest in Hong Kong and has grown stronger with each passing year. This 55th edition will continue the upward trend, with more than 50 movies screened and presented to the Hong Kong public. I must confess I am very impressed by the Alliance Française’s great selection of films, which reflects the vitality and diversity of French cinema! The festival will start with a diptych dedicated to French national hero Charles De Gaulle, followed by screenings of many other noteworthy and acclaimed French productions and co-productions. Among them, you will have the opportunity to discover the movie “Violette” (Changer l’eau des fleurs), by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who honours us with his presence in Hong Kong and his engagement with the Hong Kong public. For the first time, the festival will also present a selection of films from the famous Cannes Film Festival section, la Quinzaine des cinéastes (Directors’ Fortnight). Julien Rejl, Artistic Director of the Directors’ Fortnight will attend the festival and take part in a series of Q&A and masterclasses. Another novelty this year is the ‘On va au ciné !’ program, which aims to show French films to Hong Kong students. Cinema has served as a bridge between Hong Kong and France for decades. This year’s retrospective, ‘French Frames in Hong Kong’, will illustrate it brilliantly through a selection of French films shot in Hong Kong. The festival will also pay tribute to the great French talents who have unfortunately left us this year, Brigitte “BB” Bardot and Nathalie Baye. I hope you will find this year’s edition of the French Film Festival both entertaining and enriching! The Hong Kong French Film Festival is Hong Kong’s longest-running film festival: organised each year by the Alliance Française de Hong Kong, it is committed to promoting and celebrating French cinema. This 55 th edition stands out for i t s n e w f e a t u re s a n d i t s e x c e p t i o n a l l y rich selection of films, highlighting the diversity and uniqueness of the French film scene. Our teams have prepared an exciting program, combining the latest French releases, a retrospective, special events, and visits from renowned talents. Of the 60 movies selected this year, 41 are 2026 productions, some only recently released in France or not yet released at all. The retrospective focuses on French films shot in Hong Kong and pays tribute to two major French actresses who left us recently - Brigitte Bardot and Nathalie Baye. This edition marks the launch of two new projects. First, the Directors’ Fortnight Extended, following editions in Tokyo, New York and Los Angeles, comes to Hong Kong with a curated selection of films from the Cannes Film Festival’s independent Quinzaine des Cinéastes. For the occasion, the HKFFF will welcome Julien Rejl, Artistic Director of the Directors’ Fortnight. Second, the festival’s new outreach programme, Let’s go to the movies!, which aims to support Hong Kong–France cultural exchanges through French cinema, will offer a selection of films dedicated to students from primary school to university. Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, whose film “Amelie” has become a symbol of French cinema, has also honoured us with a visit to present his new film, “Violette” (Changer l’eau des fleurs). 剛剛接任法國駐香港總領事一職，本人非常榮幸為香港法國電影節撰寫序言。眾所周知，這享譽日隆的電影盛典是香港歷史最悠久的電影節，並且規模日益壯大。今年第五十五屆延續了這上升趨勢，將介紹超過五十部影片給香港觀眾。必須承認，法國文化協會精心挑選的影片給我留下了深刻的印象，它們充分展現了法國電影的活力與多樣性！

由香港法國文化協會主辦的香港法國電影節是香港歷史最悠久的電影節，一直以來致力於推廣法國電影。今年第五十五屆除了貫轍選擇的片種極度豐富之外，更推出全新的環節，充分展現出法國電影的多元性和獨特性。

電影節將以向法國民族英雄戴高樂致敬的二部曲電影之首部《戴高樂之戰 ( 一 )：抗戰》展開序幕，隨後將放映許多其他值得關注且讚譽的法國電影及合力製作的影片。其中包括由 Jean-Pierre Jeunet 執導的影片《重拾新生活》(Violette)。我們非常榮幸他將親臨香港，與香港觀眾互動交流。今年電影節將首次加入康城影展的「導演雙週」(Quinzaine des cinéastes) 的環節。「導演雙週」藝術總監 Julien Rejl 將出席電影節，並參與一系列問答環節和大師班。另一個新環節是「一齊去睇戲！」(On va au ciné !)，旨在向香港學生介紹法國電影。數十年來，電影都是連接香港和法國的橋樑。今年電影回顧其中的一個主題「法影香江」(French Frames in Hong Kong) 將透過一系列在香港取景拍攝的法國電影來證明這一點。希望您能享受今年法國電影節帶來的娛樂和啟發！法國駐香港及澳門總領事館很高興能成為香港法國電影節的長期合作夥伴。

OUR GUESTS OF HONOUR 電影節嘉賓 Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a French film director and screenwriter known for the films “Delicatessen”, “The City of Lost Children”, “Alien: Resurrection” and “Amelie”. Jean-Pierre Jeunet bought his first camera at 17 and made short films while studying animation at Cinémation Studios. He befriended Marc Caro, a designer and comic book artist whom he met at an animation festival in Annecy in 1974, and they became longtime collaborators and co-directors. Together, Jeunet and Caro directed award-winning animations. Jeunet’s films often resonate with the late twentieth-century French film movement, cinéma du look, and allude to themes and aesthetics involving German expressionism, French poetic realism, and the French New Wave. Jeunet and Caro’s first feature film was “Delicatessen” (1991), a melancholy comedy set in a famine-plagued, post-apocalyptic world, in which an apartment building above a delicatessen is ruled by a butcher who kills people to feed his tenants. They next made “The City of Lost Children” (1995), a dark, multi-layered fantasy film about a mad scientist who steals children’s dreams so that he can live indefinitely. The success of “The City of Lost Children” led to an invitation to direct the fourth film in the Alien series, “Alien: Resurrection” (1997). Jeunet directed “Amelie” (2001), starring Audrey Tautou. “Amelie” tells the story of a woman who takes pleasure in doing good deeds but struggles to find love herself; it was a huge critical and commercial success worldwide and was nominated for several Academy Awards. For this film, Jeunet also gained a European Film Award for Best Director. The film will be screened as part of the 55th Hong Kong French Film Festival. Lastly, he directed the film “Violette”, adapted from Valérie Perrin’s novel. It will be presented as part of the 55th Hong Kong French Film Festival and released in France in early December 2026. Ella Rumpf is a Swiss actress known for her intense and transformative screen presence. She broke through internationally with her role in “Raw” (2016), earning acclaim for her fearless performance. Her versatility spans arthouse and genre films, with recent roles in “Coutures” (2024), a drama set in the Paris fashion world. In 2022, she received the Swiss Film Award for Best Actress for “Soul of a Beast”, marking a major recognition in her home country. Rumpf continues to be one of the most compelling talents in European cinema. OUR GUESTS OF HONOUR 電影節嘉賓 Julien Rejl is the Artistic Director of Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des Cinéastes), the independent section of the Cannes Film Festival organised by the French Directors’ Guild (SRF). He was appointed in 2022 and presented his first selection in 2023. Before joining Directors’ Fortnight, Rejl spent more than a decade in film distribution and publishing, notably at Capricci, working on the release of films by filmmakers including Hong Sangsoo, Wang Bing, Albert Serra, Bi Gan, Abel Ferrara and Tsai Ming-liang, as well as restorations of films by major filmmakers from cinema history. As Artistic Director of Directors’ Fortnight, he oversees the selection of feature and short films, the programme’s overall artistic direction, and its international activities. Julien Rejl will introduce 7 French films at the 55th Hong Kong French Film Festival. The 2026 Directors’ Fortnight selection includes 5 films: “Le Vertige”, “Gabin”, “Viva Carmen”, “Too Many Beasts”, and “Shana”. Two classics from previous Directors’ Fortnight selections: “Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles”, and “Love at First Fight”. Clarence Tsui is a Hong Kong-based film critic whose work has appeared in the “South China Morning Post”, “The Hollywood Reporter”, “Cineaste”, “Film Quarterly”, and “The Film Verdict”. He has curated programmes at institutions ranging from the Centre Pompidou in Paris to Cinematheque Passion in Macau. He directed the Broadway Cinematheque and the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival from 2019 to 2022. He has served on juries in Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, Rotterdam, Tokyo and Paris. He is also a part-time lecturer at the School of Journalism and Communication, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. As part of the 55th edition of the Hong Kong French Film Festival, he curated the Directors’ Fortnight Extended selection and the ‘Let’s Go To The Movies!’ selection. 徐匡慈是一位常駐香港的影評人，其作品曾在多份報刊 : 如《南華早報》、《The Hollywood Reporter》、《Cineaste》、《Film Quarterly》和《The Film Verdict》中發表。他曾為巴黎龐比度中心及澳門戀愛·電影館策劃電影活動。 2019 年至 2022 年，他擔任百老匯電影中心和香港亞洲電影節總監。他曾擔任康城、柏林、洛迦諾、鹿特丹、東京和巴黎影展的評審。他同時也兼任香港中文大學新聞傳播學院的講師。他為第五十五屆香港法國電影節策劃兩個新環節：「導演雙週延展」和「一齊去睇戲」。

Alma Brami is a French novelist, screenwriter, and playwright. In 2025, she co-wrote the screenplay for the dramatic feature film “A Dangerous Game” with Karine Silla, which will be screened at the 55th Hong Kong French Film Festival. The screenplay is inspired by her novel “Qui ne dit mot consent” (Silence Gives Consent), published by Mercure de France in 2017. Directed by Karine Silla, the film is scheduled for commercial release on November 4, 2026. Author of over eight novels, including her award-winning debut “Sans elle” (2008), Brami is known for her intense, emotionally sharp explorations of grief, family ties, psychological trauma, and maternal love; most recently in the thriller “Ils sont moi, je suis eux” (2023). Her stage work includes the monologue “L’Ombre” (The Shadow), performed in Paris, at the Avignon Festival, and in Singapore, as well as “Mardi c’est le jour du poulet”, presented at the Théâtre des Mathurins in Paris. A celebrated novelist and children’s book author, her writing consistently delves into complex emotional landscapes with sensitivity and psychological depth. June, 1940. France collapses and signs the armistice. In the midst of the chaos, an unknown general refuses to give up and flees to London to save what remains of freedom. Without an army, without backing, without hope. Yet, little by little, resistance fighters, rebellious students and determined soldiers rise in England, France and Africa to join the cause. Their faith, audacity and thirst for freedom defy what history seemed to have written in advance.

Dozens of French films have been shot in Hong Kong over the last 60 years. As the city’s oldest active film festival (first screenings in 1953), we cannot help but look back. From the 1960s onwards, French directors began using the city as a vibrant, exotic backdrop, starting with “Chinese Adventures in China”. Over the following decades, French filmmakers kept flocking to Hong Kong to capture its neonsoaked and sensory landscape. We provide you with five examples from the 1960s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.

Michel Bernardin works for “Planet Assistance”, which helps travellers in need. On his first assignment, Michel goes to North Africa to get a man out of the hospital but ends up with the wrong man and accidentally sets off a coup d’état. In New York, he is attacked by men in Harlem while trying to bring a musician back. Lastly, he goes to Hong Kong, where he comes across his fiancée but is also an unwitting puppet of some racketeers. Michel Bernardin 任職於 Planet Assistance 公司，專門協助有需要的旅客。他接到的第一項任務，是前往北非把一名男子從醫院帶出來，結果卻帶錯了人，還無意中觸發政變。在紐約，他本想帶一名音樂家回國，卻在哈林區遭人襲擊。最後，他來到香港，重遇未婚妻，卻又在不知不覺間淪為一夥不法之徒的扯線公仔。
