FOREWORD 前言 The Hong Kong French Film Festival – French Cinepanorama is back for its 52nd edition, for the greatest pleasure of all French cinema lovers in Hong Kong! The Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, is proud to support this year again the French Cinepanorama and allow cinemagoers in Hong Kong to experience, through the lens of some of our greatest filmmakers, the life and culture in France as well as French perspectives on the world and society. With more than 50 titles, this new edition is a wonderful o p p o r t u n i t y t o d i s c o v e r t h i s y e a r ’s re m a r k a b l e achievements of French cinema including the popular Jeanne du Barry and The Three Musketeers – D’Artagnan, along with famous classics such as The 400 Blows and Amelie as part of the retrospective programme. The festival will also host the Hong Kong premieres of two of the most anticipated French releases of 2023 which have been acquired by the local distributors Golden Scene and First Distributors: the 2023 Palme d’Or Anatomy of a Fall and The Pot au Feu, for which Tran Anh Hung won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Finally, this year will also mark the 70 th anniversary of the Alliance Française in Hong Kong, which gives us an excellent occasion to celebrate and surprise the audience with the visit of some talented French filmmakers. Since its establishment in 1953, Alliance Francaise de Hong Kong has been dedicated to bringing the best and the latest French cinema to its Hong Kong audience. As we are celebrating this year our 70th anniversary, this edition of the Festival is the best example of our passion for cinema. The HK French Film Festival is the oldest film festival in town. It has been running since 1972 without interruption and we have screened movies since our inception, with Les Vacances de M. Hulot by Jacques Tati in 1953! Alliance Française is proud to present for its 52nd edition another exciting program to the movie fans of Hong Kong in 2023 and many special events with a wonderful photo exhibition at Soho House and cinema talents visiting Hong Kong as a highlight. This year’s selection is a mix between a large 2023-film selection and a series of retrospective of 70 years of French cinema: almost 30 films of the year and a selection of successes of the different past decades. This will be a spectacular firework of French cinema in Hong Kong during the 3 weeks of our festival! Vincent Perez is a Swiss actor, director and photographer. He played the title character, Ashe Corven, in The Crow: City of Angels, and starred in Queen of the Damned, playing Marius de Romanus. Some of his films in French cinema include Cyrano de Bergerac, Le Bossu, La Reine Margot and Indochine. He just achieved The Edge of the Blade (2023) that he will present during the Festival. 瑞士演員、導演兼攝影師 Vincent Perez 曾在電影《魔誡追緝令》（The Crow: City of Angels）中飾演 Ashe Corven 、《屍纏妖后》（Queen of the Damned）中演 繹 Marius de Romanus 一角 。他亦曾參與多部法國電影的演出，如《大鼻子情聖》 （Cyrano de Bergerac）、《駝子》（Le Bossu）、《瑪歌皇后》（La Reine Margot） 和《情證今生》 （Indochine）。他將在電影節其間親自介紹他的新作《劍走偏鋒》 （The Edge of the Blade）。
Karine Silla is a French actress, writer and director, known for A Butterfly Kiss (2011), Peau d’ange (2002) and Il est plus facile pour un chameau (2003). She wrote with Vincent Perez the scenario of The Edge of the Blade (2023). She will also present her documentary films, On the Set of “Forever Young” (2022) and Mixing (2023) during the festival. Karine Silla 是一位法國演員、作家兼導演。她的成名作包括《蝶吻》（A Butterfly Kiss, 2011），《天使的肌膚》（Peau d’ange, 2002）及《對駱駝來說做白日夢更容 易》（Il est plus facile pour un chameau, 2003）。2003 年推出的新片《劍走偏鋒》 的劇本是她與 Vincent Perez 合作編寫。電影節期間她將會親自來港向觀衆介紹她 的紀錄片《承傳》（On the Set of “Forever Young”, 2022）。
Jean-Pierre Lavoignat is a film critic, producer, writer and journalist, cofounder and chief-editor of Première and then Studio magazine. From 2006, he decided to focus on documentary production for television. He cocreated several cinema festivals like in Marrakech and the Festival francophone d’Angoulême. He recently published Romy Schneider and Claude Sautet. 影 評、 製 片、 作 家 兼 記 者 Jean-Pierre Lavoignat 同 時 亦 先 後 是 兩 本 雜 誌 《Première》及《Studio》的創辦人之一並兼任總編輯。他自 2006 年起專注於為 電視台製作紀錄片。他與人合作創辦多個電影節，包括在馬拉喀什舉辦的電影節 及安古蘭法語電影節。最近他出版了羅美雪妮黛（Romy Schneider）及克洛德蘇堤 （Claude Sautet）的傳記。

When Samuel falls to his death in mysterious circumstances, the investigation cannot determine whether it’s suicide or foul play. Sandra is ultimately arrested for murder and the trial puts their tumultuous relationship and her ambiguous personality under the microscope. Based on a graphic novel by Sara Varon, Goya-Award-winning director Pablo Berger’s first venture into animation is a colourful, vibrant and touching buddy drama. To escape solitude, Dog assembles Robot from a build-it-yourself kit. Setting off on a whimsical exploration of New York City, the new best friends develop an inseparable bond as they savour curbside hotdogs and roller-skate through Central Park. In 1982, Wim Wenders asked 16 of his fellow directors to speak on the future of cinema, resulting in the film Room 666. Now, 40 years later, in Cannes, director Lubna Playoust asks a new generation of filmmakers similar questions. Cinematic Pulse: at the heart of Luc Roux’s Photography
After studying at the Beaux-Arts d’Avignon, Luc Roux first worked as a photographer for Première from 1983 onwards, then, with Marc Esposito and Jean-Pierre Lavoignat, he participated in the creation of Studio Magazine in 1987, where he was the regular photographer for 17 years. His mission was to follow film shoots and festivals as well as to take portraits of actors and directors for covers and interviews. When they were created, these two new-style film magazines, both cinephile and popular, gave as much space and care to the image as to the text and became between the 1980s and the mid-2000s, the most widely read and influential film newspapers. In the wake of their success, comparable magazines were launched in several European countries, as well as in the US.
Luc Roux：用心為光影留下印記 在 阿 維 尼 翁 美 術 學 院 畢 業 後， 初 出 道 的 Luc Roux 自 1983 年 起 先 後 曾 為《Première》 雜 誌， 導 演 Marc Esposito 及 製 片 Jean-Pierre Lavoignat 擔 任 攝 影 師， 他 亦 有 份 參 與 於 1987 年 創 刊 的《Studio Magazine》的創辦，並為該雜誌社擔任常駐攝影師長達十七年。他的工作主要是 跟進電影的拍攝過程和拍攝電影節花絮，並為演員和導演拍攝肖像以作雜誌封面和採訪之用。 這兩份風格創新的電影雜誌的內容因給予圖像和文字同等的篇幅和重視，迎合當時的電影愛好者和 普羅大衆的口味，因此成為二十世紀八十年代至二零年代最受歡迎和最具影響力的電影刊物。繼它 們的成功之後，在歐洲多個國家，甚至美國相繼有同類型的雜誌出現。

In 1975 is held the trial of Pierre Goldman, a fiery and controversial figure of revolutionary left-wing activism. Guilty of numerous charges, yet he proclaims his innocence in a double murder accusation. Twenty years before the OJ Simpson case, the Goldman trial reflects the political, ideological and racial tensions that marked the 1970s in France and Europe. Then considered to be the trial of the century, it divided an entire country and widened the gap between the conservative right and left-wing intellectuals.

An association takes in young LGBT people made homeless by their families. Behind the apparent comedy, the excesses, the desire to assert themselves, lie shattered lives. They all have this furious desire to exist, to find their place in society. Here, in a race of six months to find a job, a place to live and accept themselves as they are, Noëlle, who runs the association, and Alex, who helps her in her mission, are also forced to face up to their own failures and question their motivation for helping others.
In the middle of a performance of the play The Cuckhold, a very bad boulevard, Yannick gets up and interrupts the show to take over the evening... What follows is a bizarre moment where conventions are turned upside down and the spectator becomes the orchestrator. Dupieux has produced a singular opus, shot in a few days, with an incredible score by his actors.

At the end of summer, Dr. Grange will celebrate his 3rd retirement farewell party. He struggles to leave the palliative care unit that he founded 25 years ago in a small countryside hospital. The driving force behind this commitment was a personal tragedy. The last few weeks with Dr. Grange and his patients – Cynthia, Didier, Jacqueline – raises profound questions about our ties to family and life.
The film explores how art and beauty can bring people together. Director Karine Silla takes a unique look at youth and feminism, as well as questions of identity and transmission. The film is a dialogue between the arts: dance with the École des Sables, music with the rapper Nix and the singer Elia, cinema with the students of Kourtrajmé, architecture, literature and fashion with Maison Chanel.

A y o u n g P a r i s i a n b o y, A n t o i n e D o i n e l , neglected by his derelict parents, skips school, sneaks into movies, runs away from home, steals things, and tries (disastrously) to return them. Like most kids, he gets into more trouble for things he thinks are right than for his actual trespasses. Unlike most kids, he gets whacked with the big stick. He inhabits a Paris of dingy flats, seedy arcades, abandoned factories, and workaday streets, a city that seems big and full of possibilities only to a child’s eye.
Amélie is a fanciful comedy about a young woman whose purpose in life is to orchestrate the lives of people around her in order to fix up their troubles. This leads her to invent all sorts of ideas to intervene in people’s existence and to create a world of her own making. Her mission is rudely interrupted when she meets a strange, off-beat young man, Nino Quincampoix. Although fascinated by him, she plays hide-and-seek games, afraid of really opening up to this appealing young man.

Antoine promises to take the orphaned Juliette away from St. Tropez after a party where she has wandered onto the yacht of the urbane Eric. But in the morning the bus and Antoine zip by Juliette’s stop. About to be sent back to the orphanage by her foster mother, Antoine’s younger brother Michel comes to Juliette’s rescue with a marriage proposal and she accepts. Eric wants the brothers’ shipyard as a casino site and brings Antoine back to St. Tropez. Life gets complicated.
October 1942, during the occupation. Philippe Gerbier, a civil engineer, is one of the French Resistance’s chiefs. Given away by a traitor, he is imprisoned in a camp. He manages to escape, and joins his network at Marseilles, where he makes the traitor be executed... Trough fabulous music this movie tracks three generations of musicians and dancers from Russia, Germany, France and the USA, from before World War II through the war and the Holocaust, to the 1980s. Their lives become intertwined through the historical circumstances, and the culmination is the presence of several, including a former Nazi pianist and a French Jewish Holocaust survivor at an anti-famine concert.
A young, handsome Bogart wannabe rascal is on the run after killing a cop. He returns to Paris for his money and also tries to persuade his beloved American student to take flight with him. After all the indecision, she eventually betrays him. Before his “breathless” moment, he still longs for this unrequited love.

Chinese Adventures in China sets up shop in Hong Kong, where Belmondo, as the bored-to-death young heir to a knitting-mills fortune, has anchored his yacht and tried to kill himself for the ninth time within a week. Someone suggests that he could turn his suicidal impulse to good account by insuring his life for $2,000,000 and letting himself be murdered. He does – and then meets Stripper Ursula, a girl worth living for and everything has changed.
Christina Delasalle suffers greatly at the hands of her brutish husband Michel. She inherited the boys boarding school they run but it’s clearly Michel who is in charge. With Nicole Horner – one of the teachers and Michel’s former lover – they decide to kill him. Christina, who has a serious condition, is terrified. Summer 1941. Over Nazi-occupied France, a Royal Air Force B17 Flying Fortress becomes lost after a mission and is shot down over Paris by German flak. The crew parachutes out over the city, where they run into and are hidden by a house painter and the grumbling conductor of the Opéra National de Paris. Involuntarily, they get themselves tangled up in the manhunt against the aviators as they help the airmen to escape to the free zone with the help of Resistance fighters and sympathisers.
In a rural French village an old man and his only remaining relative cast their covetous eyes on an adjoining vacant property. They need its spring water for growing their flowers, so are dismayed to hear the man who has inherited it is moving in. They block up the spring and watch as their new neighbour tries to keep his crops watered from wells far afield through the hot summer. Though they see his desperate efforts are breaking his health and his wife and daughter’s hearts they think only of getting the water.

Nikita is a young lady who with two Nihilist friends commit robbery and murder while on drugs. After her trial she is not executed or taken to prison, but to a school for special operatives. She is told that Nikita no longer exists and she will be trained to pay back society for what she has done, as a spy/ assassin. She is trained for over two years and with no warning is handed a gun in a restaurant and told to kill the man at the next table as her handler leaves.
Indochina, in the late 1920s. On a ferry across the Mekong, a French teenage girl meets the Chinese Man. She is fascinated by his riches and elegance, and accepts a lift in his limousine to complete their journey. Together, they enter a whirlwind of reckless, all-consuming passion, born from desire and suffering. After the death of Jean Cadoret, his wife has returned to the life of opera singer and his daughter Manon has grown up and become a gorgeous lonely shepherdess. Ugolin is now a thirty year-old wealthy bachelor planting carnations. His grandfather Cesar Soubeyran presses him to get married to carry the name of their family since he is the last man alive. When Ugolin sees Manon on the fields, he falls in love with her. One day, Manon plots revenge against Ugolin and Cesar and the whole town is in despair.

The night of August 24, 1572, is known as the Massacre of St. Bartholomew. In France a religious war is raging. In order to impose peace a forced wedding is arranged between Margot de Valois, sister of the immature Catholic King Charles IX, and the Hugenot King Henri of Navarre. Henri’s mother Catherine of Medici maintains her behind-the-scenes power by ordering assaults, poisonings, and instigations to incest.
Daniel used to deliver pizzas. Now he’s a taxi driver. He’s a demon at the wheel and drives a very powerful car. He is forced into making a deal with the police when he has a run-in with Emilien, a cop who’s just failed his driving test for the eighth time. Pierre, a successful engineer in building highways has a traffic accident at a moment of major decisions in his life he was about to take.
