1 minute 30 seconds beginning at 1:17 pm Information courtesy of www.StLouisEclipse2017.org and MoDOT

St. Louis area residents and visitors are in for a real treat on August 21, 2017. Just after 1pm on this Monday, the Moon will be between the Earth and the Sun and cast a shadow over Earth. Darkness will fall in the middle of the day. Planets and stars may appear. The temperature could drop up to 15 degrees. Animals and insects may behave like nightfall has set. You may think you have seen a "total" solar eclipse before, but chances are you have not. Most likely you saw a "partial" eclipse like the one that just occurred in 2014. The last total solar eclipse occurred in St. Louis in the year 1442. Twelve states and 12 million people live directly within the path of totality. Missouri ranks #1 in of the states in the path with 3.4 million of its residents living directly in the path of totality. St. Louis has 1.6 million residents living within the path of totality and is tied with Nashville for the most number of residents living directly within the path. Events across the state are planned for this unique astronomical event. An additional 1.2 million people are expected to visit Missouri beginning Friday, August 18 and leaving most likely by Tuesday, August 22. Motorists are also advised to expect heavy traffic on Missouri’s interstates and all roads inside the area of the total eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21. Extreme congestion is expected once the eclipse passes in the afternoon. Viewers of the eclipse should leave early for their viewing location, stay put and then leave late to avoid the heavy congestion after the total eclipse.

VIEWING TIPS 1. It is never safe to look at the Sun without proper eye protection. The only safe way to view a partial or annular eclipse is using a projection of the Sun (such as a pinhole projector). 2. Filtered views of the Sun (such as eclipse glasses) can be safe too but the equipment must be properly filtered and correctly used. 3. During the time the Moon’s disk covers that of the Sun, it’s safe to look at the eclipse. In fact, to experience the awesomeness of the event, you must look at the Sun without a filter during totality. 4. You won’t need a telescope. One of the great things about the total phase of a solar eclipse is that it looks best to naked eyes. The sight of the corona surrounding the Moon’s black disk in a darkened sky is unforgettable.

DRIVING TIPS 1. Plan ahead and allow extra travel time to reach your viewing location. 2. Avoid travel during the eclipse or in the area of the main path if you can. 3. Check traffic conditions on MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map. 4. Don’t stop along the interstate and no parking on the shoulder. 5. Don’t take photographs while driving. 6. Don’t wear “eclipse glasses” while you’re driving. 7. Please exit the highway to stop and view and/or photograph the solar eclipse. 8. Prepare for extreme congestion after the eclipse and consider staying at your viewing location to avoid the heavy amounts of exiting traffic from events. 9. Turn your headlights on and do not rely on your auto headlights. 10. Watch out for extra pedestrians along smaller roads. People may be randomly parking and walking alongside roads in the hour before the total eclipse to get the best viewing.

AFFTON CHAMBER SENDS STUDENT TO LEADERSHIP IN PRACTICE

There’s no better way to develop leadership skills than to practice, practice, practice. That is exactly what Affton High School Sophomore Lynn Eckhardt, did while recently attending the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Leadership in Practice program. She joined more than 120 high school students who were selected as future leaders from schools across the state. Leadership in Practice is designed to provide young Missourians with the opportunity to learn what it takes to be an effective leader in their schools and communities.

The deadline for Missouri disaster survivors to register for federal assistance has been extended to August 14, 2017. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) granted the extension at the request of Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens, citing a continued flow of new applications for federal assistance in the wake of the severe storms and flooding between April 28 and May 11, 2017. FEMA disaster grants are available to homeowners and renters in the 35 designated counties: Bollinger, Butler, Carter, Christian, Crawford, Dent, Douglas, Dunklin, Franklin, Gasconade, Greene, Howell, Iron, Jasper, Jefferson, Madison, Maries, McDonald, Newton, Oregon, Osage, Ozark, Pemiscot, Phelps, Pulaski, Reynolds, Ripley, Shannon, Ste. Genevieve, St. Louis, Stone, Taney, Texas, Wayne and Wright. Survivors – homeowners, renters or business owners – must register with FEMA to determine if they are eligible for federal assistance. Talking with county officials or the American Red Cross, or calling 2-1-1 does not automatically make survivors eligible for FEMA assistance. FEMA’s application/registration process is quick and easy. FEMA encourages all survivors who sustained disaster-related damage or losses to apply as soon as possible before the August 14 deadline. Call 800-621-3362. Operators will be available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. CST seven days a week until further notice. Go online to register at DisasterAssistance.gov

Top 5 Website Mistakes Geoff King & Zach Raineri, ZioSolutions from St. Louis Small Business Monthly, July 2017 1. Not being mobile optimized. “Mobile browsing makes up the majority of internet browsing now and not being mobile optimized means greatly reduced conversion rates and less traffic from search engines,” Raineri says. 2. Not optimizing sites for search engines. “You are missing out on a massive audience,” Raineri says. “A recent study shoed 93% of web visits began with a search engine. In terms of generating business, your site has to be optimized.” 3. Not publishing new content. “New content will help improve your online search rankings,” Raineri says. “If you are posting regular content, it helps your rankings massively as well as positions you as an authority in your industry.” 4. Not thinking about the buyer. Says Raineri: “A lot of companies don’t think about the buyer’s journey and they just go with what they like or how they think the site should look. It is important to also help your customers filter through the site and make it easy to interact and connect with you.” 5. Looking at your website as an expense instead of an asset. “Your website should be your No. 1 digital asset,” King says.

You can also increase your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) by creating a Traffic Catcher Site (TCS) at www.afftonchamber.com!
