MESSAGE FROM THE CCO Dr. Anthony Naranja, DDS Chief Clinical Officer Greetings, fellow dentists! It’s been such an exciting first half of 2021 with much to be thankful for. I can finally see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel as it leads us back to a world that certainly feels more “normal.” However, for the Clinical Team, what has become our new normal is better than ever. During COVID-19, it felt that so many connections were lost – with friends and colleagues, with our favorite past times, even with just the outside world. As our Clinical support and education programs continue to grow, we’ve been able to recapture some of those lost connections through the EPE program, expanded clinical education and training, enhanced practice development programs, continued engagement from our Strategic Clinical Council - and perhaps most importantly - a growing Clinical Team who is passionate about supporting our network of practices. I’ve been especially thrilled to recently add two of our top network dentists to the Clinical Team - Dr. Jumoke Adedoyin (Director of Clinical Relations) and Dr. Daniel Fenton (Director of Implant Education & Clinical Training). It was so important to me that we hire doctors from within our network to lend their first-hand experience as we continue to build our programs of support for our practices. In conjunction with the outstanding work in Fixed Full Arch Solutions from Dr. Dan Holtzclaw, I am confident we will see amazing growth and expansion in our support of practices with the guidance of our newly added dentist leaders.

STRATEGIC CLINICAL COUNCIL In late spring, the eleven network doctors who currently make up the Strategic Clinical Council came together at Affordable headquarters in Raleigh, NC. The clinicians spent a Saturday with Affordable senior leaders to lend their input on the most important organizational initiatives, ranging from strategic vision to practice staffing concerns. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Council members enjoyed dinner and golf at Drive Shack, where competitive spirit and laughs were in abundance. The Council, which has been in existence since 2018, has continued to be a critical aspect in the organization’s leadership and strategic processes by providing the voice of the doctor community. The Council meets virtually every month in addition to several in-person meetings each year, providing direct insight on a variety of topics and initiatives. Council members participate on a yearly rotational basis, allowing more clinicians to provide a diverse array of experience levels and perspectives. Gene Kirtser, CEO of Affordable Care, shared his thoughts on the importance of the Council. “We established the Strategic Clinical Council in 2018 and since then every significant strategic decision has been influenced by the Council. I’m infinitely grateful to the doctors that devote their time to serve on the Council. Their input and advice is so vital to ensure that doctors have a big voice in the direction of Affordable Care.” With the recent appointments of Dr. Daniel Fenton and Dr. Jumoke Adedoyin to Affordable Care clinical leadership positions, the Council will be more significant than ever before. In their new roles, Dr. Fenton and Dr. Adedoyin will rely on the Council's leadership and guidance as they drive clinical initiatives across the network, with emphasis on clinical education, dentist recruitment and doctor engagement. "It's an exciting time for Affordable Care with the investment and focus on clinical leadership," comments Dr. Anthony Naranja, Chief Clinical Officer. For more information on the Strategic Clinical Council, please contact Emily Buechler, Director of Clinical Operations (emily.buechler@affordablecare.com).
NEWS WORTHY AROUND THE NETWORK
WIN OVER WIN, FROM START TO FINISH Introducing Local Start Dental in Durham, NC Later this year, Local Start Dental, a new concept in the Raleigh-Durham area, will come to fruition. It is a merging of various interconnected parties. Dental students. Dental professionals. A World Ranked Dental School. Businesses. Local agencies. Contributors. And a community in need. In fact, it’s collaboration that will address many needs - a need to grow, to teach, to give back. A need for a helping hand. In uncovering those needs and uniting these parties, the idea emerged for something extraordinary: Local Start Dental. In early 2018 Doug Brown, Affordable Care’s Vice Chairman and former CEO, and Dr. Scott De Rossi, former Dean of UNC Adams School of Dentistry (ASOD), were discussing the challenges faced by those whom their respective organizations serve. Brown noted the overwhelming lack of access to tooth replacement services for the patient population, while Rossi cited the insufficient number of patients that UNC Dental students rely on to accurately train in denture procedures. After much discussion and innovative thinking, the mission of Local Start Dental became a reality: restoring smiles and confidence for our underserved neighbors while advancing the clinical skills of dental professionals. Life-changing Oral Care and Learning (LOCAL) is the acronym which created the program's name of Local Start Dental. This philosophy is exactly what will take place within the walls of the non-profit oral care clinic, currently under construction in Durham, NC.
"This is a local community agency that will serve others...and “start” applies to both dental students starting their careers and patients restarting their lives,” says Brown, Local Start’s Volunteer President. With 16% of North Carolina’s population living in poverty, 1.7 million people are at risk for oral health issues. As it stands, 21% of seniors in the state are edentulous while both middle-aged and younger adults are also plagued with deficient oral health. Additionally, North Carolina has over twice the national rate of emergency room dental visits, where the underlying issue is rarely treated, let alone diagnosed. The need is there. A large portion of the need lies with the 4,000 veterans living in Durham as well as the 200,000 veterans within the 14 surrounding counties. Due to limited capacity and services, these servicemen and women cannot secure tooth replacement care through the Durham VA. Those who are able to secure assistance from community agencies can expect good basic care, but, Brown says, “rarely can these organizations afford to supply removable dentures. For those in need of fixed dentures, hybrid dentures, and advanced prosthetics, Local Start will provide. It’s really going to be the best care they can get,” Doug Brown; Dr. Desiree Palmer, DMD; Dr. Mark Scurria, DDS
Of the dentists who will care for these patients, Local Start hopes many will be from Affordable. Our network clinicians will have the opportunity to volunteer their time, lending their skills to those in need. This partnership may sound familiar. In 2017, Affordable was affiliated with Brighter Way Dental Institute in Phoenix, AZ, which was the inspiration for the Local Start model. Since then, hundreds of our affiliated practitioners have participated in similar initiatives across the country, providing pro bono dental care while simultaneously achieving invaluable experience. One key difference for Local Start is the partnership with a higher education institution. “The nuance is having the UNC Adams School of Dentistry involved here...It brings its own innovative attributes to it and an exciting educational viewpoint,” says TomM Sharpe, Local Start Board Member and also Vice Chairman of Affordable Care. Conveniently situated near both UNC and the Affordable Care Support Center, the location of Local Start Dental provides excellent accessibility for patients, dental students and the Affordable network. Its structure is the perfect mechanism for which to advance our clinicians’ skills - all while giving back. With a significant number of Affordable practices in the eastern half of the U.S., many on the east coast, Local Start gives clinicians the same advantages other programs offer but perhaps in a more convenient location. “It gives us an east coast presence, the ability to help more communities, and more opportunities for in-person interaction,” Brown says of the benefits for those within the Affordable network. Local Start is eager to welcome Affordable’s 600+ licensed dentists to join in its mission. Fortunately, due to the dynamics of the North Carolina State Dental Board, Affordable Care dentists from other states who want to participate with Local Start can expect a quick turnaround on temporary dental licenses. In addition to functioning as a place where dentists can give back by practicing their skills, Local Start will serve as one of the training venues for Affordable’s sponsored clinical education courses. “Unique and tailored to the specific needs and requests of Affordable dentists,” says Brown, the customized courses will strengthen the Affordable brand and increase awareness, further validating Affordable as the leader of the DSO market. (continued on next page)

Another benefit of Local Start is the relationship Affordable will create with UNC’s ASOD, consistently ranked among the top dental schools in the world. With a full-time clinical director on staff, ASOD faculty will manage, advise and mentor 160 UNC dental students who will rotate continuously at Local Start Dental. Brown notes that “Many dental students may get only one case of dentures while learning at the UNC Clinic in Chapel Hill.” With the experience they will receive at Local Start in Durham, students will have additional opportunities to advance their skills, approaching their cases with elevated confidence. North Carolina based dentists and affiliated Affordable dentists will supplement the services students are able to provide. Local Start promises education opportunities for students, training opportunities for Affordable dentists, and phenomenal patient care. The result: life-changing outcomes for everyone. The lives of these patients, the unique stories that each one of them holds, says Sharpe, “are so compelling. Giving back to them makes our clinicians feel fantastic.” He continues, “To be able to give them this full-mouth restoration, to tell the story of ‘here is this person before and here they are after and this is what their life now looks like...’ I think everyone sees this as simply incredible...these stories are just magic.” The magic isn’t lost on anyone. Making the magic happen, however, requires the right ingredients (aka funding, supplies, and equipment), which numerous businesses and organizations have been happy to contribute. Affordable Care has made a substantial contribution as have Brown, Sharpe and another familiar name. “One large contributor was Mrs. Henson, widow of Dr. Don Henson, the co-founder of Affordable Care,” Brown says. The vendor community is stepping up as well. Henry Schein, Bien-Air, Straumann/Neodent, BioHorizons, Carestream and Carbon are some of the largest contributors making the Local Start dream a reality. Thanks to the support and the dedication of so many parties Local Start boasts a 5,000 square foot clinic with 10 operatories, a dental laboratory, and a classroom. Dentists and students alike will enjoy start-of-the-art resources and equipment including a Carbon 3D printer, Carestream Cone Beam Imaging, an Ivoclar scanner, Dentrix, and Digital Design of Prostheses. As for the work atmosphere, the founders of Local Start place a high value on instituting appropriate safety protocols and a culture that supports diversity and inclusion regarding race, gender, experience and thought. The clinic is situated on the ground floor of the newly constructed Willard Street Affordable Housing project, near many community agencies and organizations, and adjacent to the Durham Bus Station. A transit hub will bring in a patient base that easily spans beyond the borders of the Triangle area. Sharpe admits, “We anticipate a huge demand from the jump but we will start out slower than we want to because slow is what we should do to get our bearings and get the process running smoothly.” If all goes according to plan, the first Local Start patients will walk through the doors in the beginning of UNC’s fall semester in August. At its core, Local Start Dental will serve both the community and our network of dentists, According to Sharpe, this is nothing short of ideal. “Everybody can feel good about this. From patients to clinicians in training, from companies involved to BEECHTOWN ISIt’sFULL FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOODS THAT benefactors supporting it. Everybody wins. one ofOF those rare moments where you truly see that.” It truly is a win-win.

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE Dr. Shane Tewis, DDS DDS Dentist & Area Director | Broken Arrow, OK It was back in 2001 when, “my path to DDS and now ACI began,” remembers Dr. Shane Tewis. Fresh out of dental school, Dr. Tewis was first introduced to DDS while working for the National Health Service Corp (NHSC). Committed to NHSC four days a week, on his off day he worked for a DDS practice in Checotah, OK. In 2003, he accepted a full-time position with DDS in Broken Arrow, OK. Dr. Tewis has maintained this role ever since. Over the past 18 years DDS & Implant Solutions has expanded its offerings, grown its base in the southern U.S., and joined forces with Affordable, enhancing its standing in the DSO market. The company has flourished over these two decades. Dr. Tewis’s career is no different. Back in 2003, DDS’s offerings included general dentistry services and immediate dentures. “I was extracting an enormous amount of teeth each day, so I became very good at it,” Dr. Tewis says. When DDS added implants to their services in 2009, officially changing their names to DDS Dentures & Implant Solutions, Dr. Tewis was well prepared. “I was already doing implants,” he continues, “I feel very fortunate that I came to DDS at a time when I was able to grow with the company. My practice kind of skyrocketed from there.“ Through the years Dr. Tewis and his practice kept on soaring. He was recognized for his achievements at the 2019 CARE Conference, receiving the Platinum Practice Award, a distinguished honor bestowed upon a single practitioner in the network who has achieved Top Year over Year Growth. In 2020, a year that rocked our nation, the Broken Arrow practice maintained their strong standing, including Dr. Tewis’s placement of over 800 implants that year. Dr. Tewis credits the success of the practice first and foremost to his team, who he “can't do anything without”. In particular, he points to Regional Manager, Bronson Harris. “He takes really good care of his people as well as the patients,” Dr. Tewis says. “I attribute a lot of my success to the way Bronson manages the practice.” The partnership formed between DDS and ACI has also had a profound impact on Dr. Tewis. “Since ACI came on board the education that is brought to the table is top notch. It is elevating not only my confidence, but my skill level as well.” Accessibility to first-class continuing education and a phenomenal team are contributing factors to high performance, yet so too is a physician’s discipline. For Dr. Tewis, it comes down to extreme ownership and a very strong work ethic. It’s also about dedication and heart. “I love taking care of patients. I love solving problems,” he says. “I just love what I do. I feel lucky that I'm one of those people that can say that.” The DDS model has also contributed to his success and is the rationale for Dr. Tewis’s loyalty to the network. “Being able to focus on dentistry and my patients and nothing else. It’s very rewarding,” he says. Dr. Tewis’s devotion and achievements have unveiled additional roles for him within Affordable. In August 2020, he became a DDS Area Director, a mentor for other DDS clinicians in his region. He was also one of ten dentists selected to become a member of Affordable’s Strategic Clinical Council, meeting with Affordable’s senior leadership to discuss company initiatives, serving as a voice for fellow dentists in the network. This August he will become the newest faculty member at Implant Pathway, training ADI and DDS affiliated clinicians alike. Though Dr. Tewis is fully engrossed with his practice, the leaders at Affordable have seen a leader in him. And so, they’ve asked him to step up and take his place in these roles. “I feel like it's an honor,” Dr. Tewis says. “It’s a responsibility to better the profession for the company that I work for.”

CELEBRATING WOMEN IN DENTISTRY TAPPING INTO OUR STRENGTHS, LEADING, BALANCING AND BELIEVING.
This past March some of our renowned female practice owners came together In celebration of International Women’s Month. Dr. Jumoke Adedoyin, Dr. Nicole Jackson and Dr. Sabrina Nguyen took to Zoom in an effort to learn from one another, share their experiences, and grow together. These three women represent leaders in the dental community, a community that has, for all time, been male-dominated. But times are changing. The world met its first female dentist in 1855 and since then women have been edging their way forward in this discipline. Forty years ago, only 11.7% of dental school graduates were women. The shift came in 2018 when, for the first time in history, more females than males enrolled as first-year dental students in the United States. Today 49% of U.S. dentists under the age of 35 are women. Though the future of dentistry is looking quite feminine, we’re not there yet. “You’re the dentist?” Even with over two decades as a practicing dentist, Dr. Jackson, owner of the Covington, Louisiana practice, is accustomed to hearing this question when greeting her patients.
DID YOU KNOW? IN 2018, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY, MORE FEMALES THAN MALES ENROLLED AS FIRST-YEAR DENTAL STUDENTS IN THE U.S.
She’s not alone, as both Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Adedoyin, nodded in solidarity and understanding. “I’m a minority in this field in that I’m young, I’m Asian and I’m petite,” says Dr. Nguyen, owner of the Kissimmee, Fl practice, who joined the network in 2019. “For many patients, this isn’t what they expect. They’ve never seen a doctor like me, let alone one who performs surgeries.” Dr. Adedoyin is well-trained in this reaction. “You play it off. With a level of maturity and professionalism, you can turn that right around and let your skills speak for you. In the end, that works in your favor.” It’s no surprise that more and more women are entering dentistry. The job security, flexibility, gratification, and prestige that the profession offers are attractive. But it’s not only about what a career in dentistry offers women. It’s just as much about the attributes offered up by women to the discipline. Compassion. Empathy. Intuitiveness. These predominantly feminine qualities are what these dentists agreed to be key to their influence and success.
DID YOU KNOW? BY 2035, FEMALE DENTISTS ARE EXPECTED TO MAKE UP 46% OF THE DENTAL WORKFORCE.
“Patients feel like they are being listened to, and that, more than anything, makes such a big difference in being able to do the work we do,” Dr. Jackson says. Though both hard and soft skills are necessary, the soft skills are what separates one doctor from another, creates a positive team culture, brings patients in the door, and keeps them coming back. The “woman’s touch,” as Dr. Nguyen calls it, is a must in treating patients, as much as serving as a practice leader. She makes a concerted effort to create an environment where she “runs side by side” with her team, instead of in front of them. It’s a culture of empowerment and positivity, a culture that all three dentists embrace.
Dr. Jackson currently leads an all-female practice, including a female lab manager. “We are all in sync with each other...not that a male wouldn’t be welcome, but we are in tune with each others’ ebbs and flows and it works well,” says Dr. Jackson. The practice culture that these female dentists have created isn’t lost on the patients. “When a patient walks in, the best compliment I receive is, ‘Your whole staff really enjoys working with one another,’” Dr. Nguyen says. Dr. Jackson concurs, sharing that the most recurring feedback she receives from patients is how she and her staff “work like a well-oiled machine.”
"THEY'VE NEVER SEEN A DOCTOR LIKE ME, LET ALONE ONE WHO PERFORMS SURGERIES." Dr. Sabrina Nguyen, Kissimmee, FL
"ONE OF THE UNIQUE QUALITIES THAT WE, AS WOMEN, BRING IS INTUITIVENESS." Dr. Nicole Jackson, Covington, LA
For many women, having a well-oiled machine in the workplace often goes hand in hand with a dysfunctioning machine in their personal lives. As of 2019, 42% of businesses are women-owned and of these female business owners, one in three are mothers. Even though more and more women are taking the entrepreneur reins, they remain the primary caregiver. Dr. Adedoyin declares that “this culture that says we have to be it all” needs to shift.
Though it’s hard to juggle it all, the flexibility of being an entrepreneur, particularly at AD&I has its benefits. The model itself is almost designed for the modern woman’s lifestyle. Prior to joining AD&I, Dr. Jackson was a private practice owner. In that phase of both her professional and personal life she recalls, “there wasn’t a moment to sit down.” Having gone into dentistry for the freedom it offered, there came a point when she acknowledged the absence of the freedom it promised. “I will tell you I have a completely different lifestyle now since I’ve become part of the Affordable family. I feel liberated.” She insists, “You can have that work-life balance.” Though for a while Dr. Jackson lacked that balanced life, she was never without autonomy. Autonomy, for Dr. Nguyen, however, was a first. Since graduating dental school in 2016, Dr. Nguyen has exclusively worked in corporate dentistry, where the “corporate-run, not doctor-led” culture was constant. Until she stepped into AD&I. “You get so much say here. You're acknowledged. You’re heard. And someone is always here to support you,” Dr. Nguyen says. As for the hopes and dreams they have for women in dentistry, Dr. Nguyen summed it up in a word. “More.” More female leaders, more mentorship, more championing fellow women, a more diverse representation of what a dentist is and can be. And a more accurate look into ourselves, sans any selflimiting beliefs that society or history has put upon us. Support swirled on this Zoom call. There was harmony, understanding, and a bond among this triad of women. They recognized. They empathized. They heard one another. They were women.

CELEBRATING WOMEN IN DENTISTRY
Dr. Pearson (center) with her team in Wilsonville, OR
WHEN DETERMINATION RUNS DEEP Dr. Annette Pearson, DDS Practice Owner | Wilsonville, OR For the young Annette Pearson, summers in the 1960’s and 70’s promised two things for certain. Time with her grandmother and a dental appointment. Incidentally, when thinking back on her childhood, some of Dr. Pearson’s fondest and most vivid memories happen to be those trips to the dentist. Dr. Pearson was one of five children raised by a single mother in Arizona. Every year they would escape the scorching southwest heat, traveling to Indiana to spend their summer with their maternal grandmother. It was during this time that their mother, an ESL professor at a community college in Arizona, chipped away at her PhD in nearby Bloomington. Summer after summer. Over and over again. “One thing that was always a treat was going to see the dentist,” Dr. Pearson remembers. “Grandma would take all five of us into Indianapolis. It was a big thing for us. We’d get dressed up, go downtown, see the dentist and have lunch.” One year, when seven year old Dr. Pearson excitedly told their family dentist, Dr. Phillips, that she too wanted to be a dentist when she grew up, he more or less patted her on the head and said, “Maybe a dental hygienist, Annette.” It seems that the ever resolute Dr. Pearson didn’t hear him.
It was the 1960’s when Dr. Pearson was born, and at that time female dentists were few and far between, totaling a mere 1% of the discipline. Being a woman in a predominantly male field, however, didn’t discourage her. And even though she came from little means, her determination never wavered. It’s no wonder considering that Dr. Pearson comes from a long line of hardworking barrier-breaking women. Take Beatrice Warnicke. Dr. Pearson’s maternal grandmother did much more than influence the oral hygiene of her grandchildren. “My grandmother was born in 1902. Her mother died when she was very young, so she was raised by her father. She went to law school in Indiana and became the first female prosecutor in the district.” Dr. Pearson recounts. Warnicke had two children, one of which was Dr. Pearson’s mother, Louise Renault, who divorced when Dr. Pearson was very young. Though it would be anything but breezy, Renault was forever determined to successfully raise her children while obtaining her Doctorate in Second Language Studies, no matter how long it took. After thirteen years of courses and commitment, that degree was hers. Whatever solid determination gene these women shared, it passed down to Dr. Pearson. “That power and influence was there, before I was even born,” she says. “You can make your dreams come true.” She notes, however, that success requires output. “Nobody gave me it. I didn't have anybody pay my way.” It was her. All her. Dr. Pearson set course for her place in dentistry by first attending community college, where she obtained an AA degree in Dental Technology. She stayed the course, working full time in a dental lab and becoming a certified dental ceramist technician in 1986. She attended night school for ten years, to “keep [herself] out of trouble,” so she says. That decade of coursework accumulated in the credits necessary to apply for dental school at the Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD). Though she lacked a four year undergraduate degree, her accomplishments in and dedication to the field, along with the strong relationships she molded with the directors of IUSD’s Orthodontic department gave her an edge at enrollment. She also received a strong recommendation letter to dental school from none other than Dr. Phillips, her childhood dentist. In 1998, after 17 years in the field, Dr. Pearson graduated from dental school. All of that schooling just wasn’t enough somehow, as over the next three years she completed IUSD’s Master of Science in Dentistry program in Prosthodontics. While an Assistant Professor at IUSD, Dr. Pearson came upon Affordable Care. She connected with Dr. Linda Wick, practice owner of the Franklin, Indiana ADI affiliated practice at the time, and began working with her on a part-time basis, focusing solely on dentures. When the 2008 recession hit, she was asked to join the practice full-time. She agreed, on one condition. “I said ‘Only if you will teach me how to perform surgeries,” Dr. Pearson recalls. “Dr. Fowler, the other dentist at the practice, took me under his wing and showed me how to take teeth out in a way that seemed as if they were just floating out.” After almost ten years working in the Franklin practice, Dr. Pearson and her husband were ready for a new adventure. Affordable was gearing up to open de novo practices in Oregon, and so, they decided to settle in Portland, where Dr. Pearson has been practice owner since January 2011. She has thrived in this role. In 2019 for example, she performed 7,000 extractions. It's now 2021 and Dr. Pearson has forty years of dental experience behind her. Forty years of diligence and determination, growth and grit. Forty years that delivered something sacred. “Grandma always told me, ‘They can take away everything from you, but never your education.’” Maybe that’s the reason for those forty years. They weren’t easy. They weren’t the norm. But they were possible. And Dr. Pearson made them permanent. Because she could and it will always remain.

DR. JUMOKE ADEDOYIN MEET THE DOCTOR
Dr. Jumoke Adedoyin, an Affordable Dentures & Implants practice owner for the past 12 years, was recently appointed to Director of Clinical Relations. It’s a role tailored specifically for Dr. Adedoyin and her unique talents, focused on fostering and strengthening the critical relationship between Affordable Care and our network of dentists – specifically related to doctor recruiting and engagement. As a new member of the ACI Clinical Team, Dr. Adedoyin will work closely with Clinical leadership to lead the doctor assessment process and develop strategies that enhance doctor communication and engagement. Her clinical perspective throughout will prove to be a valuable component, strengthening the Clinical Team’s overall impact. “That’s one of the highlights of this job. I'll be working with people I’ve formed relationships with throughout the years,” she says. Dr. Adedoyin will be serving as one of the leaders on a new three-part team, including Dr. Daniel Fenton, the newly appointed Director of Education and Clinical Training, and Dr. Dan Holtzclaw, Director, Fixed Full Arch Solutions. They will work in tandem to focus on the doctor career journey continuum, including recruitment, engagement, clinical education, quality of care, and retention. “The whole point of creating these clinical roles is to fulfill the clinically led and operationally managed concept that Affordable seeks to uphold and I think this is one of those steps to make that a reality,” comments Dr. Adedoyin. Dr. Adedoyin believes dentist engagement begins at the moment clinicians are introduced to the Affordable network. She is especially excited about working in close collaboration with the Clinical Recruiting team to provide clinical oversight in dentist selection and build network credibility during the interviewing process. “When doctors are getting recruited, they want to hear from a real-life dentist in the network to give more validity to the company and the role,” she says.
While recruiting the right dentists is certainly important, equally critical are retaining and engaging the network of existing clinicians. Having experienced immense success as the owner of the Cartersville, GA practice, clinicians within the network regularly reach out to Dr. Adedoyin. Due to her approachable nature and credibility within the discipline, clinicians are both eager and comfortable seeking her counsel. That counsel is respected within the organization and beyond, one of many reasons for her becoming the strong and accomplished leader that she is today. As part of her new role, Dr. Adedoyin will be spearheading clinical practice assessments as part of the Enhanced Patient Experience (EPE) program - lending her knowledge, experience and expertise in an effort to help others succeed. In this role, she says, “I get to see a lot of doctors and understand their pain points while addressing their individual growth process. I then provide this information to management so that as a company we can grow and all will grow with us.” Though now part of the Affordable Care’s Support Center team, she will maintain a presence and influence on her Cartersville, GA practice, which “will help me stay grounded and connected,” Dr Adedoyin says. Confident in her abilities to tackle the responsibilities that come with this role, Dr. Adedoyin acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead. “I’m so used to instant gratification with my patients. I can control that process to a certain extent.” She recognizes that now her job is to lead other dentists down a path of success, the path that she herself has walked. “I’m excited to lead from a different perspective, to put my other strengths to use,” she says. “ I've always known that I've wanted to lead on a larger scale. I feel like I can touch more patients by touching more doctors.”
About Jumoke Adedoyin Dr. Jumoke Adedoyin was born in Nigeria. After moving to the United States as a teenager, she received her Undergraduate Degree from Clark Atlanta University. She attended Howard University College of Dentistry, graduating first in her class. Following the birth of her first child, Dr. Adedoyin became an Associate Dentist with Affordable Dentures in 2001. After several years running her own successful private practice, she returned to Affordable Dentures in 2009 as the owner of a de novo practice in Cartersville, GA. She is a faculty member of Implant Pathway in Phoenix, AZ, and has earned both Fellowships and Masterships in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (MICOI) and the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics (MAAIP). In addition to dentistry, she enjoys her work as a life coach and mentor to fellow female dentists. She currently resides in the Atlanta area with her husband and three sons.
DR. DANIEL FENTON MEET THE DOCTOR
Dr. Daniel Fenton, who has been affiliated with Affordable Dentures & Implants for the past 8 years, was recently appointed to Director of Education and Clinical Training. In this role, Dr. Fenton will be responsible for formalizing and executing a clinical training strategy for the Affordable network of dentists; developing training curriculum, validating and selecting training partners, and cultivating vendor relationships to ensure all clinicians have the training and education needed for success. With a diverse network of dentists and an ever-growing network, this is certainly no small task. Dr. Fenton will work in close collaboration with Dr. Jumoke Adedoyin and Dr. Dan Holtzclaw in their clinical leadership roles. Each of the leaders will reach clinicians at unique points during their career journeys with Affordable. As the first point of contact, Dr. Adedoyin will connect with clinicians during the recruiting process, foster engagement and perform an initial assessment of their educational needs. It is then up to Dr. Fenton to “do a deep dive into their abilities and cater a personalized curriculum with a focus on advancing each clinician's clinical skills.” Doctors who excel will move on to Dr. Holtzclaw who “will push the boundaries of the top doctors in the network." Together they create a dynamic trifecta, sharing the ultimate goal of growth and achievement for each individual doctor in our network. It’s no surprise that this new role belongs to Dr. Fenton, as education is weaved throughout his professional story. His expansive academic roster includes a full academic undergraduate scholarship, a Masters and DMD at Nova Southeastern University and being one of four selected to complete an internship program in Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He excelled in pre-prosthetic surgery and denture fabrication during his two years with the National Health Service Corps. Adding to his achievements are the more than 2500 CE hours he has completed to date.
Dr. Fenton went from student to teacher in 2017 when he became an Implant Pathway Faculty member. In the next several months, he will begin teaching for Neodent’s "Train the Trainer" Program as well as leading Affordable's implant training initiatives, including programs in conjunction with Local Start Dental. Serving as both teacher and student, his quest for learning continues. “I’m often the educated while I’m being the educator. I always learn several things from the people I'm teaching,” he says. “You're never done learning. You have to leave your ego at the door, for if you don’t you’ll be blinded to what is out there.” Like his devotion to education, Dr. Fenton places a high value on mentorship. “It goes beyond the walls of dentistry,” he says. “If you are fortunate enough to have a mentor, regardless of what line of work you are in, there’s no substitute for that. It’s invaluable.” Dr. Fenton’s first mentor came into his life prior to dental school and it was his experience volunteering for his practice that solidified his decision to make dentistry his life’s work. “My mentor was the one who made me excited for this position. I was fortunate to have him as my mentor and feel its my obligation to pass that on to someone else.” He passed his philosophy of mentoring to many dentists within the Affordable network including Dr. Peter Fereg, Dr. Nick Castellanos and Dr. Sabrina Nguyen, who have grown under his guidance, exceeded all expectations and now run their own successful practices. His countless contributions of mentorship and his passion for serving others in the Affordable network has led him here. “Everything at this point has added up to this unique opportunity,” he says, speaking of his Director position. “Developing other clinicians resonates with me in that I'm making a larger impact,” he says. “When you pass on knowledge to others you exponentially change more lives.” Though this new role will demand his full attention, Dr. Fenton will continue to practice his craft. “It’s critical for me to stay involved as a clinician from a credibility standpoint and because of the passion I have for what I do,” he says. “It will run as it normally does. It will just take on a new identity. There is an infinite amount of credible people there to continue on. They will thrive.”
About Daniel Fenton Dr. Daniel Fenton earned a Bachelor of Science degree at University of Florida and went on to Columbia University in New York City where he matriculated in their Post Baccalaureate Sciences program. Dr. Fenton was one of five students selected to participate in Nova Southeastern University’s Masters of Biomedical Science program. Upon completion, he attended NSU’s College of Dental Medicine where he received his doctorate degree. Dr. Fenton is an avid CE enthusiast, having accumulated over 2500 additional hours since dental school graduation; including the AAID Maxi Course, Misch Implant Education Continuum, Dawson Occlusion Seminar, and the Garg Implant Institute. He has Fellowship status within the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), Associate Fellowship status within the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, (AAID), and Diplomat status within International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI). He holds Diplomat status within the International Dental Implant Association (IDIA) and fellowship status within the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics (AAIP). Dr. Fenton is a faculty member of Implant Pathway and an instructor for both BioHorizons and Neodent. Dr. Fenton currently resides in Florida with his wife and their two children.

BUILDING A DREAM TEAM
Whether in the workplace, professional sports, or your local community, having a solid team is critical to success. Building that team requires a keen understanding of people, their strengths and what gets people excited to work with others. Here are 6 easy tips to help you build the team of your dreams:
1
Be aware of your own work style
2
Get to know your team
3
Clearly define roles and responsibilities
4
Be proactive with feedback
5
Acknowledge and reward
6
Always celebrate success
As the leader of the team, you must be extremely aware of your leadership style and techniques. Evaluate yourself and be critical about where you can improve, especially in areas that will benefit those whom you are a leading. Be your own boss. Be flexible. Know who you are as a leader.
Much like you need to hold yourself accountable for your actions to assure you maximize performance and results, you must make the time to get to know your team and encourage camaraderie. Invest your time to fully understand how your team members process information and what is required to motivate them to excel beyond what is expected from them. Think of your team as puzzle pieces that can be placed together in a variety of ways.
Each of your team member’s responsibilities must be interconnected and dependent upon one another, not unlike team sports, where some players are known as “system players” – meaning that, although they may not be the most talented person on the team, they know how to work best within the “system.” A team should operate as a mosaic whose unique strengths and differences convert into a powerful united force.
Feedback is the key to assuring any team is staying on track, but more importantly that it is improving each day. Many leaders are prone to wait until a problem occurs before they give feedback. Feedback is simply the art of great communication and should be part of one’s natural dialogue. Feedback can be both formal and informal - in fact, if it becomes too structured and stiff, it becomes difficult for the feedback to be authentic and impactful. Remember that every team is different, with its own unique nuances and dynamics treat them as such. Allow proactive feedback to serve as your team’s greatest enabler for continuous improvement. Take the time to remind someone of how and what they can be doing better. Learn from them. Feedback is two-way communication.
With proactive feedback comes acknowledgement and reward. People love recognition, but are most appreciative of respect. Take the time to give your teammates the proper accolades they have earned and deserve. At a time when people want to feel as if they are making a difference, be a thoughtful leader and reassure your team that you are paying attention to their efforts. Being genuine in your recognition and respect goes a long way towards building loyalty and trust. It organically ignites extra effort! When people are acknowledged, their work brings them greater satisfaction and becomes more purposeful.
You must take the time to celebrate success - take a step-back and reflecting on what you have accomplished and what you have learned throughout the journey. In today’s fast-paced, rapidly changing world of work, people are not taking enough time to understand why they were successful and how their success reverberated and positively impacted those around them. Celebration is a short-lived activity - don’t ignore it! Live in the moment and recognize what allowed you to cross the finish line.

ENHANCED PATIENT EXPERIENCE
CLINICAL SUPPORT PROGRAM
IN THIS TOGETHER: EPE CLINICAL TRIBES In the process of creating the EPE Program, the Affordable Clinical Team recognized an unanticipated need. Though clinicians throughout the network have much in common, it's fairly uncommon for them to connect with one another on a regular basis. Often hearing doctors report that they felt isolated from their peers, the Clinical Team decided this was a problem that needed a solution. In January 2021, Jim Smyros, Sr. Director of Implant Services, and Emily Buechler, Director of Clinical Operations, launched Affordable’s EPE Clinical Tribe program. Eight to fifteen clinicians form each tribe, and meet virtually every six to eight weeks in an effort to “create community,” Smyros believes this interaction is a critical component to doctor success. “It’s like a mastermind group. Doctors share their experiences and what they are working on. It’s really all in effort to create a support system, an opportunity to be vulnerable." The Clinical Tribe initiative is one of the many benefits of the EPE Program. Tribes are formed first based on EPE practice region and then on each clinician’s experience and standing in their dental journey. Meetings span an hour and a half, led by the Regional Implant Specialist, with the first part offering an educational component, usually in the form of a relevant speaker. The second half of the meeting, led by one of the clinicians on the call, affords all participants the opportunity to ask questions or discuss virtually anything with a selected doctor. This segment has become known affectionately as “the hot seat." Success stories, challenges and best practices are shared. It allows Tribe members to get to know one another on deeper levels, lend support and gain insights from their peers. Dr. Feng Chang, owner of the Columbus, OH practice, was new to implant dentistry when he joined the network in August 2020. A member of the Clinical Tribe that spans the Ohio/Pennsylvania region, Dr. Chang has found the calls to be supportive and informative, positively influencing his clinical skills and confidence. In the spring, Dr. Chang sat in that hot seat, presenting to tribe members, including Dr. Pooja Chugh. “Dr. Chang went over the challenges that he was facing, as well as techniques and strategies that have helped him over time,” says Dr. Chugh, who joined Affordable in April in Exton, PA. “The greatest thing about this group is that we all face similar kinds of problems, nondental related as well. When doctors have been there before and talk about it, it’s very impactful.” Dr. Chang’s takeaways mirror that of Dr. Chugh. “It’s helpful for me to talk about my cases. It’s a good learning experience,” he says. “I feel like I could share something that may be useful to other new doctors.” “Many times the calls go overtime because of all of the brainstorming that takes place,” Smryos says. When the calls do come to an end, the conversations don’t necessarily stop. Clinical Tribe meetings serve as the relationship stepping stone for doctors to build the connections further through continued conversations offline. While Clinical Tribes have only met virtually to date, the Clinical Team looks forward to hosting in-person events in 2022. “We want our doctors to form true community with one another," comments Buechler. "There's something special about having the ability to shake someone's hand and share experiences together. We want to help facilitate that." The goal of Clinical Tribes is to create community amongst the practices, bringing doctors within the network closer together. It’s an inclusive place that spurs organic conversation, where clinicians can support, celebrate and relate to one another.
CLINICAL EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT
ENGEL INSTITUTE
In late 2020, Affordable Care initiated an exciting new partnership with the nationally renowned Engel Institute implant training program in Charlotte, NC. The Engel Institute is one of the leading dental implant education programs in the U.S. with over 15,000 alumni successfully trained in just the past decade. The Engel Institute was an easy choice for an Affordable clinical education partner for many reasons. With a geographic footprint on the East Coast and a solid Neodent relationship, it fit many of the Affordable network needs. However, it was the curriculum that truly inspired the connection. Dr. Todd Engel, founder and primary instructor, has an obvious passion for inspiring and mentoring dentists, and his courses focus on quality patient care and consistent, predictable outcomes.
Dr. Todd Engel, Founder
Dr. Todd B. Engel is originally from Van Nuys, California and has resided in Orange County, California since 1997. He is a graduate of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry where he also received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery. Dr. Engel is a Diplomat of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and maintains active membership status with the following associations: American College of Oral Implantology, Academy of Osseointegration, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Association, North Carolina Dental Society, California Dental Association, and Orange County Dental Society. Dr. Engel has extensive experience in Dental Implant Rehabilitation, CT Guided Surgical Design, Complex Treatment Planning as well as Full Mouth Rehabilitation. Dr. Engel has hosted live radio, authored several articles and has been a featured keynote speaker both nationally and internationally on topics such as Dental Implants and Restorative Applications, Digital Radiography, CBCT – Cone Beam Technology, Ridge Augmentation and Socket Preservation, Treatment of the Edentulous Patient, Current Dental Materials as well as Comprehensive Treatment Planning on Medically Compromised Patients. In 2005 Dr. Engel’s life long dream of creating a learning institution where he could share, teach and motivate other dental professionals was realized by the inception of the Engel Institute. The Institute has grown to now include 4 locations with faculty both nationally and internationally and has trained well over 2000 dental professionals in its short tenure. Dr. Engel is an athlete and enjoys all outdoor sports, traveling with his family, drumming, great dining experiences, time with his friends and world peace.
This year, Engel Institute has already hosted over 60 Affordable dentists for live patient surgery education, with students ranging from implant novices to some of our most experienced dentists. The Engel implant education continuum (Mentoring 1 - 4) courses have been uniquely tailored with the Affordable network in mind. Dr. Engel also created and recently launched an Implant Fast Track Course, designed exclusively for Affordable dentists. Dr. Katherine Jones, owner of the Affordable practice in Burlington, NC, has attended both M1 and M2 this year. "Dr. Engel's M1 course ignited my dental implant practice by empowering me with the knowledge needed for predictable success. The M2 course improved my knowledge further and upon return to my practice, grafting procedures became fun and predictable. Best continuing education I have attended in my 32 years as a dentist!" says Dr. Jones. For more information on Engel Institute, visit their website at www.engelinstitute.com or email us at ClinicalEducation@affordablecare.com.
DR. DAN HOLTZCLAW, DDS, MS DIRECTOR, FIXED ARCH SOLUTIONS
In the brief time since Dr. Dan Holtzclaw joined Affordable as Director of Fixed Arch Solutions, the network has seen a flurry of exciting developments and focused activities in fixed arch solutions. In March of this year, the first Fixed Arch Pilot program was launched in Orlando, Florida. The Orlando Pilot involved fixed arch training and adoption activities on multiple levels in each practice, including surgical, laboratory, and auxiliary support. As part of the Fixed Arch strategy, the Affordable Marketing Team has developed a number of new and innovative advertising strategies with a focus on fixed arch treatment. In just a few short months since the pilot inception, the hard work of the Clinical EPE Team, Marketing Team, and the Orlando Pilot practices has been evident with over 50 arches having been treated, resulting in a production value exceeding $1 million. While the increased revenue generation is certainly exciting, we have been thrilled to be part of the amazing growth in these Pilot practices. It's been a privilege to support our doctors, clinical assistants, front desk personnel, and laboratory teams - who have gained a sense of pride and excitement in offering a new service that can truly delight our patients.
With the success and proof of concept seen in the Orlando Fixed Arch Pilot, we have expanded the Fixed Arch Pilot Program to several new markets, including: Tampa, FL- DMA; Reno, NV; Jackson, MS; Raleigh, NC; and Providence, RI. We're excited to continue the growth and momentum as we expand! In addition to the Pilot programs, we've added several new clinical training options to the 2021 EPE Clinical Education Calendar for fixed arch prosthetics and surgical training. We are partnering with Smart Denture Conversions in Raleigh, NC, for fixed arch prosthetic training in August and October of this year. This training will utilize a combination of live patient observation and hands-on laboratory work for comprehensive training on fixed arch prosthetics for both dentists and lab technicians. For the surgical training component, we are equally excited to announce Live Patient Fixed Arch Observation courses with Dr. Holtzclaw at his practice in Austin, TX, in September, October and December. This is an invaluable experience to learn first-hand from our own expert. We will continue to expand our Fixed Arch Solutions services throughout this year and well into the future. Dr. Holtzclaw will soon be available weekly for Virtual CBCT Review and Treatment Planning sessions for fixed arch treatments. He will also soon be available to the network for travel to participate onsite at practices to provide in-person Fixed Arch surgical assistance. As Dr. Holtzclaw advances the Fixed Arch Solutions program, we should expect to see continued growth and development. In the first six months of 2021, All-In-One™ treatment is already up an incredible 556% over 2020. Without a doubt, there's a high demand for these services from doctors and patients alike. However, Dr. Holtzclaw credits the hard work and dedication of the practices we serve for the momentum. "Over the past six months, I've had the pleasure of working with a number of doctors in their clinics on Fixed Arch cases," states Dr. Holtzclaw. "As we expand our Fixed Arch training initiatives and services offered through ACI, I know the growth will soar even higher!"
