Dating Anxiety
The Hidden Mental Health Impact of Ghosting
Modern dating can be exciting, but it can also bring uncertainty, vulnerability and anxiety. One of the most common experiences affecting people's confidence and emotional wellbeing today is ghosting.
Ghosting is when someone suddenly cuts off all communication without explanation. They stop replying to messages, ignore calls and disappear from your life without offering any closure. Whether you've been chatting for a few weeks or have been on several dates, being ghosted can leave you feeling confused, rejected and questioning your self-worth.
While ghosting has become increasingly common in the age of dating apps and social media, that doesn't make it any less painful. In fact, the emotional impact can be significant, particularly for those who are already prone to anxiety or overthinking.
As human beings, we naturally seek understanding and certainty. When a relationship or connection ends abruptly without explanation, our brains are left with unanswered questions. We begin searching for reasons and trying to make sense of what happened.
You may find yourself asking:
• What did I do wrong?
• Was I not attractive enough?
• Did I say something that upset them?
• Why wasn't I worth an explanation?
The challenge is that there are often no clear answers. The brain dislikes uncertainty, and when information is missing, it will frequently create its own explanations, many of which are negative and self-critical.
From a Solution Focused Hypnotherapy perspective, this can activate the primitive part of the brain, sometimes referred to as the "fight, flight or freeze" response. When this happens, the brain perceives emotional rejection as a threat, triggering feelings of anxiety, stress and self-doubt.
The Link Between Ghosting and Dating Anxiety
Being ghosted can have a lasting impact on how we approach future relationships. Many people become hyper-aware of communication patterns, analysing every text message, delayed response or change in behaviour.
You may find yourself constantly checking your phone, worrying when someone takes longer than usual to reply or assuming the worst when there is no immediate response.
Over time, these experiences can contribute to dating anxiety. Instead of enjoying the process of getting to know someone, the mind becomes focused on potential rejection or disappointment.
This heightened state of alertness can make dating feel exhausting and emotionally draining. The more anxious we become, the more difficult it can be to trust others and remain present in new relationships.
One of the most damaging effects of ghosting is the impact it can have on self-esteem.
Without closure, many people internalise the experience and assume they were somehow responsible. They begin to develop beliefs such as:
•I'm not good enough.
•There's something wrong with me.
•Everyone leaves eventually.
•I'll never find the right person.
These thoughts can become deeply ingrained and influence future dating experiences. The reality, however, is that ghosting often says far more about the other person's communication skills and emotional maturity than it does about your worth.
Yet when anxiety takes over, it can be difficult to see this objectively. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a positive and practical approach to overcoming dating anxiety and rebuilding confidence after experiences such as ghosting.
Rather than focusing extensively on the past, it helps clients understand how their brain works and develop strategies for creating the future they want.
A key part of the process is learning about the connection between thoughts, emotions and behaviour. When we understand why we feel anxious, we can begin to respond differently.
Hypnotherapy also helps promote deep relaxation, allowing the mind and body to move out of a heightened state of stress. As anxiety reduces, many clients report feeling calmer, more confident and less likely to overanalyse situations.
By focusing on strengths, successes and future goals, clients can begin to rebuild self-esteem and develop a healthier relationship with themselves. Instead of dwelling on unanswered questions, attention shifts towards what is working well and what positive changes they would like to see in their lives.
Being ghosted can be painful, but it does not define your value or your future relationships. While the experience may trigger anxiety, self-doubt or fear of rejection, it is possible to regain confidence and move forward.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you quieten the overthinking, reduce anxiety and develop a more positive outlook on dating and relationships. By understanding your mind and focusing on your preferred future, you can begin to let go of past experiences and approach new connections with greater confidence, resilience and self-belief.
Remember, someone else's decision to disappear is not a reflection of your worth. Healthy relationships are built on communication, respect and mutual understanding and you deserve nothing less.

A Healthy Gut, A Healthier You
Gut health has quietly become one of the most talked-about topics in modern wellness. Once seen as purely digestive, it’s now linked to everything from energy and mood to skin clarity and overall vitality. As wellness continues to shape luxury living from spa menus to curated retreats, the focus has shifted towards how we feel from the inside out.
At the heart of this conversation is the idea that when your gut feels balanced, you tend to feel more balanced overall. It influences daily comfort, energy and even resilience during busy or demanding periods. While science continues to explore the finer details, what’s becoming increasingly clear is that gut health is less about strict rules and more about everyday choices that support long-term wellbeing.
Inflammation has also become a defining wellness buzzword, but it’s often misunderstood. In simple terms, it’s the body’s natural response to stress, injury or imbalance. The issue arises when it lingers in the background, influenced by factors such as stress, lack of sleep, highly processed foods and a fast-paced lifestyle. Rather than focusing on it in clinical terms, many wellness experts now see it as a gentle signal that the body may be asking for more rest, nourishment or balance.
The encouraging shift is that small, consistent lifestyle changes can help restore equilibrium, supporting both energy levels and overall wellbeing without the need for extremes.
From a lifestyle perspective, food has become one of the most enjoyable ways to support gut health. Colourful, plant-rich plates filled with fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds are being celebrated not as restrictive choices but as vibrant,
flavour-led eating. Fermented foods such as kefir, live yoghurt, kimchi and kombucha have also moved firmly into the mainstream, often appearing on menus in stylish cafés, wellness-focused restaurants and luxury retreats.
Rather than feeling like a trend-driven approach, this way of eating is more about enjoyment, variety and tuning into what makes you feel your best.
Beyond the plate, lifestyle habits play an equally important role in how the body feels day to day. Quality sleep, gentle movement, hydration and moments of rest all contribute to a greater sense of balance. In particular, modern wellness conversations increasingly highlight the importance of slowing down in a world that rarely does. Whether it’s a walk-in nature, a Pilates class, or simply switching off in the evening, these small rituals can have a surprisingly powerful effect on how energised and grounded you feel.
Stress management is also central, with many people turning to practices such as breathwork, yoga or mindfulness to create space within busy lives. These approaches are less about perfection and more about creating moments of pause that allow the body and mind to reset.
Ultimately, gut health is no longer viewed in isolation but as part of a broader approach to wellbeing. It reflects how we live, how we eat and how we rest. Rather than chasing perfection, the focus is shifting towards consistency and balance. In a world where wellness continues to evolve, supporting your gut may simply be about making everyday choices that help you feel a little more like your best self.

The Retreat Revolution
Over the past decade, the wellness retreat industry has flourished as more people seek space to slow down, reconnect and reset. Whether it's a four-hour wellbeing experience, a day retreat or an immersive weekend escape, these carefully curated events offer a welcome pause from the demands of everyday life. I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced this journey from both sides, as both a guest and a facilitator.
Having attended retreats across the UK and abroad, as well as hosting and supporting events as a holistic therapist, I've seen first-hand how much thought, passion and planning goes into creating these memorable experiences. Long before guests arrive, months of preparation are spent finding the perfect venue, planning workshops, coordinating suppliers and ensuring every detail helps people feel relaxed, nurtured and inspired.
As a Host
I've been lucky enough to collaborate on a variety of retreats, from offering one-to-one treatments on fitness and wellbeing retreats in Barcelona to partnering with yoga retreats in beautiful countryside venues across the East of England. I've led skincare rituals, self-massage workshops and essential oil experiences, alongside co-hosting day retreats for women in business that blend creativity, vision boarding and business inspiration within luxurious spa settings.
Behind the scenes, hosting is both rewarding and demanding. Countless emails, planning meetings and logistical details all happen before the first guest even arrives. During the retreat itself, I make a conscious effort to stay hydrated, grounded and present, knowing the energy you give to others is just as important as the programme itself.
Yet every hour of preparation is worthwhile. Watching strangers become friends, seeing confidence grow and witnessing those quiet moments of connection reminds me why retreats are so powerful. Those little "glimmer" moments stay with me long after the event has ended.
As a Guest
Attending retreats has been equally transformative for my own wellbeing. They provide the opportunity to step away from routine, gain fresh perspective and reconnect with what's truly important. Every experience has inspired me personally while also influencing the way I create meaningful moments for my own clients.
For me, one of the greatest gifts is the people you meet. Conversations flow naturally, new friendships are formed and sometimes a single conversation can shift your outlook or open unexpected doors. I genuinely believe people cross our paths for a reason, and retreats have a wonderful way of bringing together like-minded souls.
Although many people attend with friends, I actually enjoy travelling to retreats on my own. It encourages me to step outside my comfort zone, be fully present and embrace the experience without distraction. There's something incredibly liberating about giving yourself permission to simply be.
If you've ever felt drawn to attend a wellbeing retreat, I'd encourage you to trust that instinct. Sometimes just a few hours away from everyday life can leave you feeling calmer, clearer and more connected than you imagined.
A retreat isn't about escaping life, it's about returning to it with renewed energy, fresh perspective and a deeper connection to yourself.
If you are feeling called to attend a wellbeing event, or maybe feeling a little inspired after reading this, I have some incredible events coming up, check out my Instagram @daniellecox.wellbeing.

Rich, smoky and wonderfully spiced, this traditional Moroccan aubergine dip is made for scooping, sharing and savouring.
Ingredients
600g aubergine
40g garlic, sliced
30g green chilli, sliced
50g olive oil
325g tomatoes, diced
5g ground cumin
5g sweet paprika
Juice of one lemon
15g coriander, chopped
Salt to taste
Method
Pierce the aubergine in a few places with a skewer or knife, then grill until charred all over and soft (alternatively you can do this over a gas hob or in the oven).
Leave the aubergine to cool, then peel and chop the flesh. Meanwhile, place the garlic, chilli and oil in a pan and cook until the garlic is beginning to brown around the edges and the chilli has softened. Add the cumin and paprika, quickly followed by the tomatoes before the spices burn. Season with salt and cook over low heat until the tomatoes have broken down.
Once the tomatoes are completely soft, add the aubergine in and let the mix cool to room temperature before adding the lemon juice and coriander, checking for seasoning (depending on the tomatoes you may need more lemon juice).
To serve just garnish with a little more olive oil.

Aubergine, Halloumi & Walnut Burgers
Made for sunny lunches and Alfresco dining
Ingredients
2 aubergines (500g)
2 tbsp BBQ sauce
50g California Walnuts, chopped
6 small floured baps, halved (400g)
250g halloumi, sliced into 6
½ tbsp olive oil
6 little gem lettuce leaves
Tomato chutney to serve
Method
Place the aubergines on a BBQ or griddle pan and cook for 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally until soft and slightly charred, wrap in foil and set aside until cool enough to handle. Cut the ends off and remove the skin, cut in half and pull apart the flesh. Place in a bowl and mix in the BBQ sauce and Walnuts, season.
Toast the baps on the BBQ or griddle pan until golden. Brush the halloumi slices with a little oil and BBQ or griddle for 1-2 minutes each side until golden. Place the lettuce on the bap base, top with the pulled aubergine and then the halloumi. Add a spoonful of tomato chutney and the top of the bap to serve. For extra flavour, add some sriracha sauce to the pulled aubergines and brush the baps with a little vegan mayo. Recipe from California Walnuts
Mango Pie
Bring a taste of the tropics to your table with this refreshing mango pie, just perfect for summer entertaining.
300g fresh or thawed frozen mango, diced, plus extra to decorate
Juice of 1 lime, plus finely grated zest to garnish
Method
Place the digestive biscuits and caster sugar in a food processor and blitz until finely crushed. Gradually pour in the melted butter and process until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Press the mixture firmly into the base and up the sides of a 23cm loosebottomed tart tin or pie dish, chill in the freezer for 20 minutes. Pour the double cream and 60ml of the coconut cream into a blender and blend on a medium speed until thick, holding soft to stiff peaks, about 1–2 minutes. Transfer to a mixing bowl. ( Pour 60ml of cold water into a small bowl. Sprinkle over the powdered gelatine and leave to stand for 1 minute. Microwave for 15–25 seconds, or until the gelatine has dissolved. Do not allow it to boil. Add the diced mango, lime juice and the remaining 180ml cream of coconut to the blender. Blend until completely smooth. Scrape down the sides, then add the dissolved gelatine and blend again until fully combined. Add around 360ml of the whipped coconut cream mixture and blend briefly until light and airy. Cover the remaining whipped cream and chill until needed.
Pour the mango filling into the chilled biscuit base and smooth the surface. Refrigerate uncovered for at least 6 hours, or preferably overnight, until set. If chilling for longer than 12 hours, loosely cover with cling film.
Whisk the reserved whipped coconut cream again if needed until it holds stiff peaks. Spoon or pipe over the tart, then finish with extra diced mango and a sprinkling of finely grated lime zest.

The Book Hotel Faial Island’s
First Five-Star Hotel
Faial island’s first five-star hotel, The Book Hotel, is due to open its doors this summer.
Located on Faial island - known as the blue island for the hydrangeas that bloom across its landscape - the Book Hotel is a new boutique hotel that combines heritage, culture and contemporary luxury, bringing a new level of high-end hospitality to one of Portugal’s most captivating island destinations.
The hotel is the result of a seven-year €8.5 million restoration project that will bring new life to a 19th-century building overlooking the Atlantic in the charming maritime town of Horta. Once home to the Liceu da Horta (the island’s historic secondary school) and later the Grémio Literário Faialense (a longstanding literary and cultural society), the building was once a gathering place for the island’s literary and cultural circles.
Project Director at Lamparina Melódica, Olena Dolga says: “The name The Book Hotel is directly inspired by the historical identity of the building. The property has always been closely linked to education and culture in Horta, we wanted to preserve its identity while creating a space that feels contemporary and welcoming.”
The hotel offers 20 rooms and five apartments, with interiors that blend contemporary design with natural materials and subtle references to the building’s literary past. While expansive ocean views and calm communal spaces encourage guests to slow down and reconnect with nature.
Known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, marine culture and whale watching, the island has long attracted adventurous and culturally curious travellers. Building on this unique setting, the hotel will offer immersive island experiences through curated activities, complemented by tailored wellness programmes, and a high-end restaurant.
Those ready to explore Faial Island and experience The Book Hotel’s luxury offering can fly direct from London to Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, before taking a connecting flight to Faial Island. Alternatively, guests can fly direct to São Miguel in the Azores before continuing on to Faial Island.

Getting Away with Murder by Shari Lapena
She loves her husband. But she might love their house more . .
Jill and Ted adore their New York brownstone the way others adore their children. They have carefully, expensively, made every inch of it their own. It reflects who they are, their status and tastes. With the grand mahogany staircase and state-of-the-art kitchen, it is the stuff of glossy magazines and real-estate dreams. It is their sanctuary. So when Ted’s inheritance runs out and he makes a bad investment, they panic. How can they protect their beloved home and enviable lifestyle?
The answer is obvious. Or at least, it is obvious to Jill and Ted. The death of one wealthy family member could solve all their problems. Together, they will get away with murder.
As long as they trust each other.
And as long as there are no surprises . . .
The Family Friend by Claire Douglas
When Imogen is told she’s inherited a country house near Bath, she thinks it must be a mistake. She last saw its owner, reclusive artist Dorothea Roe, sixteen years ago, during a tragic summer which changed her life for ever. Now, with partner Josh in tow, it’s a chance for a fresh start.
But after discovering an old box with her name on it in Dorothea’s abandoned study, Imogen starts to believe the woman was trying to send her a secret message. And when rumours begin to swirl that Dorothea was murdered, she starts to suspect that this gift might not be the life-line she thought it was.
Who would want to kill Dorothea? Could it be tangled up in Imogen’s own dark family history? And what if Imogen is now the one in danger?
