Training the Brain for Happiness Happiness is often described as a personality trait, something you’re either born with or without. But solution-focused hypnotherapy is grounded in a very different way, the brain is not fixed. It is constantly changing in response to where attention goes, what is repeated, and how experiences are processed.

This ability of the brain to rewire itself is known as neuroplasticity, and it is central to how solutionfocused hypnotherapy supports lasting emotional wellbeing. Every thought, feeling, and behaviour activates neural pathways. The pathways used most often become stronger and more automatic over time.

Because the brain’s primary role is survival, it naturally prioritises problems, threats, and uncertainty. This is why anxiety, overthinking, and low mood can begin to feel like default states. The brain is not broken, it is simply doing its job. The encouraging news is that these patterns are learned, and what is learned can be gently reshaped.

Solution-focused hypnotherapy combines an understanding of neuroscience with practical techniques that help calm the nervous system and guide the brain toward more helpful patterns of thinking. Rather than analysing the past in depth, the focus is placed on where the client wants to be and how their brain can support that outcome.

By reducing emotional arousal and stress, the brain moves out of survival mode and becomes more receptive to change. In this calmer state, new neural pathways associated with confidence, calm, and emotional resilience can begin to form.

A key principle of solution-focused work is shifting attention away from what feels wrong and toward what is already working. This doesn’t ignore difficulties, instead, it prevents the brain from becoming stuck in threat-based loops.

Simple, forward-focused questions such as “When does this feel slightly more manageable?” “What tells you you’re coping better than before?” and “What

would be a small sign that things are improving?” help activate the brain’s problem-solving centres.

Each time the brain looks for resources, strengths, or moments of progress, it strengthens pathways linked to hope and self-efficacy. Over time, this reduces rumination and builds emotional stability.

Neuroplasticity responds best to small, consistent changes. Just as anxiety develops through repeated stress responses, calm and confidence develop through repeated experiences of safety, reassurance, and solution-focused thinking.

Hypnotherapy supports this process by helping clients access a deeply relaxed state, where the brain is particularly receptive to positive suggestion and learning. In this state, new ways of responding can be rehearsed and strengthened, allowing change to feel natural rather than forced.

True happiness isn’t about feeling positive all the time. It’s about resilience, the ability to recover more quickly from stress and trust your capacity to cope.

When the nervous system is regulated, the brain becomes more flexible, creative, and emotionally balanced.

Solution-focused hypnotherapy works by creating the conditions in which the brain can do what it does best: adapt, learn, and move forward.

Training the brain for happiness doesn’t mean eliminating negative emotions. It means developing a brain that can recover more quickly, think more flexibly, and recognise progress alongside challenge.

With practice, the brain learns what we repeatedly show it and wellbeing becomes something we actively build, rather than wait for.

Eat for Energy, Not Restriction For decades, we’ve been taught that eating well means eating less. Fewer calories. Fewer carbs. Fewer pleasures. Yet despite the endless rules, many of us feel tired, foggy, irritable, and disconnected from our bodies. What if the problem isn’t that we’re eating too much, but that we’re eating without enough intention toward energy?

A new, more compassionate approach to nutrition is emerging, one that shifts the focus away from restriction and toward nourishment. It asks a simpler, more powerful question: Does this food support my energy, physically, mentally, and emotionally?

Restriction is often praised as discipline, but biologically, the body experiences it as stress. Skipping meals, cutting out entire food groups, or constantly being good can elevate cortisol, destabilise blood sugar, and disrupt hormones. Over time, this can lead to cravings, poor sleep, low mood, and that familiar afternoon energy crash.

The Art of Deep Rest Rest has become strangely complicated. We track our sleep, optimise our mornings, and fill our evenings with “wind-down routines,” yet many of us still feel tired in a way that sleep alone doesn’t seem to touch.

That’s because true restoration isn’t just about how long you sleep. It’s about how often you allow yourself to truly pause.

Deep rest is the kind of rest that happens while you’re awake. It’s the exhale between moments. The space where nothing needs your attention and nothing needs to be improved. And in a busy, switched-on world, it has quietly become a luxury in itself.

Even with a good night’s sleep, days filled with rushing, decision-making, screens, and constant input can leave the mind overstimulated. By the time evening arrives, the body may be lying down, but the mind is still moving.

Deep rest offers a way to reset before exhaustion takes hold. It gently slows everything down, allowing the body and mind to soften rather than simply shut off.

This kind of rest isn’t dramatic or indulgent.

It’s subtle. And it’s powerful.

Non-Sleep Deep Rest, often shortened to NSDR, is exactly what it sounds like, rest that feels almost like sleep, without actually falling asleep. You might be lying down, eyes closed, listening to a calming voice or simply focusing on your breath as your body relaxes deeply.

total wellness Hello, my name is Danielle. With a background in holistic wellbeing and over 15 years within the beauty and wellness industry, my work has always focused on balance, self-care, and intentional living. Over the years, I’ve seen a meaningful shift in how we approach wellbeing, moving towards more thoughtful and seasonal practices.

2. Nourish your body with winter goodness - Gut health plays a key role in mood and energy, supporting serotonin production and reducing fatigue. Lean into comforting soups and hearty stews made with root vegetables and warming spices such as cinnamon, ginger and turmeric to nourish both body and soul.

As we move through the depths of winter and the festive season fades, the colder days and darker evenings can begin to feel heavy and draining. For many, this shift in season brings emotional challenges, with around 1 in 10 people experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), making even everyday tasks feel more difficult.

My idea of a dreamy winter ritual begins with a hot herbal tea (lemon and ginger is a favourite), offering both comfort and immune-boosting benefits. Light a candle or two for an ambient atmosphere and then Indulge in a dreamy skincare routine that goes a little deeper than your daily cleanse, tone and moisturise. I recommend a cleanse oil base to begin, double cleansing with an oil free soapy cleanser. Buff away dead skin cells with a gritty exfoliator, then using an oil follow with a gentle facial massage routine, this promotes collagen production and reduces tension areas in the brows and jaw.

Treat yourself to a hydrating mask and leave this on whilst you work through Journal prompts (this is the perfect time to feel reflective).

Each month, I’ll be sharing a seasonal wellbeing perspective, offering simple self-care ideas and insights designed to support everyday life and encourage a more mindful approach to wellbeing.

SAD symptoms can include : - Low mood or sadness - Feelings of loneliness, worthlessness and wanting to withdraw from those that care about you - Difficulty concentrating – even after more sleep than usual - Constant fatigue or low energy - Feeling sluggish and heavy in the body, but wanting to overeat carb heavy foods - Slow digestive system as a result of this - Body aches and pains, feeling more sensitive than usual

It is important to be aware of changes in your body and mind, if these persist longer than two weeks, diving into the wellbeing practises below may help you overcome SAD, before clinical intervention is necessary.

Here are 3 simple but effective ways to help ease symptoms of SAD, taking care of your mental, emotional and physical wellbeing with a holistic approach.

1. Get outside as much as possible - Wrap up warmly and embrace the fresh winter air on your skin. Gentle movement outdoors, combined with slow, mindful breathing, helps clear stagnant energy and supports your circadian rhythm, which can easily become disrupted during darker winter months with less natural light.

3. Create a winter ritual for yourself - It can be difficult to slow down and embrace the softer pace of winter, but when you allow yourself to do so, both your body and mind will thank you.

This ritual is the perfect way to regulate your nervous system and nourish your soul.

Chicken Breast with Oriental Stem Ginger Sauce This dish a perfect winter warmer with succulent chicken breasts in a glossy aromatic sauce that’s sweet, tangy and deliciously fragrant.

Ingredients 2 chicken breasts 2 Opies Stem Ginger Balls, finely chopped 3 Opies Lemon Slices, finely chopped 1 tbsp honey 200ml coconut milk Pinch of chili flakes 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp oil 20g butter Noodles, for serving Sesame oil Coriander (finely chopped) Spring onion (finely chopped) Toasted sesame seeds (for garnish) Method In a pan, heat 1 tbsp oil with 20g butter over medium heat.

Pan-fry the chicken breasts until golden brown on both sides. Remove from the pan and set aside. In the same pan, add the finely chopped stem ginger, lemon slices, and a pinch of chili flakes. Fry for a couple of minutes until fragrant.

Pour in the coconut milk, honey, and soy sauce. Stir well and bring the mixture to a simmer and add the chicken breasts back into the pan. Let the sauce simmer until the chicken is fully cooked and the flavours meld together.

Beef & Pickle Stew Bold, briny and full of character this is delicious served with seasonal vegetables or chunks of sourdough

Ingredients 1kg Stewing Steak 1 tbsp Flour 1 Onion, chopped 2 Carrots, chopped 2 Celery sticks, chopped 2 cloves Garlic, crushed 125g Button Mushrooms Few sprigs Fresh Thyme 500ml Beef Stock 100ml Red Wine ½ Jar Opies Cocktail Onions, drained 1 Bay Leaf ½ Jar Opies Pickled Walnuts, brine reserved Handful of Parsley, chopped

Method Dice the stewing steak into 1cm chunks and coat in flour. Heat 1tbsp oil in a casserole dish and brown the meat on all sides.

Remove with a slotted spoon and heat the oven to 160°C.

Add more oil into the pan if needed and then add all the vegetables and thyme, cook on a low heat until soft. Add the stock, wine, bay leaf and pickled walnut brine. Season well and place in the oven for 3-4 hours until the beef is beautifully tender.

Stir in the pickled walnuts and cocktail onions and allow to heat through. When ready to serve scatter over the parsley.

Pistachio and Cranberry Frangipane Cake Sweet almond flavour meets with tart cranberries and the crunch of pistachios in this beautiful winter dessert.

Method

Ingredients 150g pistachios 150g soft brown sugar 150g unsalted butter 2 eggs 2 tsp orange rind, grated 75g Doves Farm Organic Self Raising Wholemeal Flour 1 tsp Doves Farm Baking Powder 100g fresh cranberries Butter, for greasing tin Orange Cream 150ml double cream 2 tbsp icing sugar 2 tbsp orange liqueur

Preheat the oven, scatter the pistachios onto a large baking tray and bake for 5 minutes then allow to cool.

Rub some butter around the inside of a 20cm/8” inch round, deep, loose bottom baking tin or insert a baking liner.

Put the cooled pistachios in a kitchen blender and pulse until they resemble ground almonds, remove three tablespoons to a small bowl. Measure the brown sugar into a mixing bowl then remove three tablespoonfuls to the small bowl of ground pistachios. Chop the butter into cubes in the mixing bowl and beat until smooth.

Break one egg into the mixing bowl and beat well. Break the second into the bowl, finely grate in the orange rind and beat together. Add the flour, baking powder and ground pistachios to the bowl, mix to combine then stir in the cranberries. Tip the mixture into the tin, and smooth the top. Stir the bowl of ground pistachios and sugar and sprinkle this over the top.

Bake for 50-55 minutes then leave to cool in the tin, then turn out and store in kitchen foil or an airtight tin.

For the orange cream, beat together the cream and icing sugar, then beat in the orange liqueur. Serve a spoon of the cream with a slice of cake.

Hartwell House: Where History Breathes and Luxury Unfolds

If it’s good enough for Royalty, it’s certainly good enough for the rest of us. Hartwell House, set within 90 acres of sweeping parkland, is one of those rare English retreats that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

Now owned by the National Trust and lovingly managed by Historic House Hotels, its history stretches back nearly a thousand years, including an extraordinary chapter as the home of the exiled Louis XVIII of France. Yet what truly elevates Hartwell is the spell it casts from the moment you arrive.

The approach alone sets the tone. As my car curved gently along the long, tree-lined avenue, it was easy to imagine the sound of horsedrawn carriages once travelling the same route. There is something cinematic about those first few moments, the stately silhouette of the house coming into view, the quiet anticipation as you near the entrance, and the subtle sense that the world beyond the gates has politely slipped away.

Stepping through the imposing front door and entering The Great Hall, with its intricately carved ceilings, magnificent stone fireplace, and giltframed portraits watching quietly from the walls, the hall showcases the very best of Jacobean and Georgian craftsmanship. It is grand yet inviting, a room where history feels both present and protective.

From here, an extraordinary staircase sweeps upward, its carved figures each whispering a fragment of Hartwell’s long story. Our Royal Four Poster Suite continued this seamless blend of elegance and comfort. Sunlight filtered through tall sash windows dressed in embroidered swags, illuminating cushioned window seats overlooking the wide lawns. The room was serene and spacious, centred around a magnificent four-poster bed draped in matching floral fabrics. A Persian-style rug anchored a cosy sitting area, furnished with powderblue armchairs, a marble-topped table, and a raspberry, red sofa.

Antique pieces, carved wooden chairs, delicate side tables, and framed botanical prints added character at every turn. Soft patterned wallpaper wrapped the room in warmth, and high ceilings with ornate plasterwork emphasised its historic grandeur. Far more than a hotel suite, it felt like stepping into a beautifully preserved chapter of English heritage.

Afternoon tea was served in the Morning Room, framed by tall windows overlooking the gardens. With delicate china, perfectly risen scones, and pastries that resembled miniature artworks, the experience was indulgent yet unpretentious. The room, like so much of Hartwell, encourages lingering, ideal for slow conversations, long-awaited books, and quiet, reflective moments.

As evening settled, we enjoyed pre-dinner drinks and dainty hors d’oeuvres in the Library. Surrounded by leather-bound volumes and pools of soft lamplight, it felt charmingly intimate, as though we had been invited into a private salon belonging to an old friend with impeccable taste.

Dinner unfolded in the Soane Dining Room, inspired by Sir John Soane’s work at 11 Downing Street. The space, with its tall columns, candlelit glow, and understated detailing, struck a beautiful balance between ceremony and comfort.

The menu was full of temptations. After much deliberation, we chose a whipped goat’s cheese and honey tartlet with tomatoes and pesto, a delicate harmony of sweet and savoury, followed by pan-fried sea bass with swede boulangerie, spinach, and swede purée. The crisp skin and tender flesh paired perfectly with the buttery warmth of the swede. The Beef Wellington, served with celeriac and truffle purée, pickled mushrooms, and creamy potatoes, was melt-in-the-mouth delicious. Dessert was a triumphant sticky toffee pudding with custard, sticky toffee ice cream, and a crisp brandy snap, nostalgic, sweet, and irresistibly comforting.

We returned to the Drawing Room for coffee, reluctant to leave the gentle glow of the fire. Eventually we ascended the Grand Staircase, pausing again to admire a carving we somehow missed earlier, a reminder that Hartwell rewards those who look closely.

Morning brought sunlight stretching across the gardens and a generous breakfast of pastries, fruit, yoghurt, jams, and a hearty full English, accompanied by tea and fresh coffee. Afterwards, a gentle stroll through the grounds offered fresh perspectives on the house, its elegance somehow more impressive from afar.

The day continued with a visit to the spa, where I indulged in a 111SKIN facial. From the moment the therapist began layering the brand’s signature formulas, cooling, silky, and delicately scented, my skin seemed to drink in every luxurious ingredient. Gentle lymphatic massage eased tension from my face and neck, and the renowned treatment mask left my complexion brighter, firmer, and deeply hydrated. Emerging into softly scented air, I felt renewed, my skin luminous with post-treatment radiance.

Hartwell House makes you feel like Royalty not through extravagance, but through serenity, beauty, and an unmistakable sense of being cared for. It is a place to breathe deeply, to wander freely, to imagine richly, and to indulge wholeheartedly. A sanctuary steeped in history yet alive with warmth, a place truly fit for a King.

With minimal light pollution and a wide, uninterrupted horizon, the night unfurled in dazzling constellations. We found ourselves lingering outside far longer than planned, wrapped in the rising steam as the Milky Way stretched lazily across the dark velvet sky above.

But The Mole Resort is more than a comfortable lodge, it is a living landscape. The grounds are truly expansive, offering miles of greenery where every turn seems to reveal a new postcard-perfect view. Wide lawns unfurl like soft green carpets, ponds glint in the sunlight, and woodland trails tempt you to wander a little deeper. At the heart of the resort stands the old manor house, a building rich with character, history, and charm. Its warm stone façade and traditional architecture create an immediate sense of heritage and stepping inside feels like entering a world where time moves gently. This is where the main restaurant is housed, and dining here adds a further layer of enchantment to the experience.

High ceilings, wooden beams, and views stretching across the grounds make each meal feel both intimate and atmospheric.

One of the highlights of our visit was the resort’s cheese and wine tasting, an experience that celebrated the very best of local produce paired with refined international flair. Nyetimber sparkling wine, crisp, elegant, and delicately effervescent, set the tone beautifully. Alongside it, a wonderfully smooth Le Chardonnay offered a rich yet balanced complement to the selection of cheeses. The local cheeses were creamy, complex, and full of soul, each one telling a story of Devon’s terroir and artisan traditions. It was the sort of tasting that encourages you to linger, savour, and appreciate the craftsmanship behind every bite.

Dinner that evening, taken in the old house, continued the theme of indulgence. We began with a classic prawn cocktail, an old favourite executed with fresh, sweet prawns, crisp lettuce, and a beautifully tangy Marie Rose sauce. Crispy prawns added golden crunch and tenderness in equal measure, while the red pepper hummus and warm flatbread brought a smoky, vibrant note to the table.

Our steak was exceptional, deeply flavourful, perfectly cooked, and served with all the right accompaniments. Dessert, an iced raspberry parfait, was light, refreshing, and beautifully balanced, the perfect finale to a beautifully paced meal.

Back at our lodge, we ended the evening where we began, outside, wrapped in starlight, the countryside quiet and soothing around us. It is rare to find a place that blends such a sense of luxury with such an abundance of natural beauty, but The Mole Resort does so with ease.

Days at The Mole Resort come with as much or as little activity as you desire. One morning, we ventured to the coast, Devon’s shoreline being one of the great treasures of this region.
