AFA Awards and recognition
AFA’s award program was back on the agenda in 2022, and two major award winners were announced at this year’s in-person AFA Thrive Conference on the Gold Coast in September. Several longstanding AFA members and directors were also honoured for their outstanding contribution to the AFA and the Advice profession.

Congratulations Amie Baker
Established in 2011 in conjunction with TAL and celebrating 10 years, this award recognises women in financial advice who are making a significant contribution to their profession, their community and their clients. The Award promotes positive change in the financial advice sector, encouraging more women to enter the industry and take leadership roles. Importantly, it aims to give choice to Australians when it comes to choosing a financial adviser.
General Manager, of TAL’s Retail Distribution, Niall McConville, said “Amie’s dedication and passion for educating the community and guiding her clients has already helped many people. Amie joins an impressive alumni and we congratulate her on this achievement. We are thrilled that Amie has this new platform to continue to drive positive change in the advice profession.”
Adviser of the Year 2022
Congratulations Felicity Cooper
Since 2003, the AFA has recognised those advisers who sit at the very pinnacle of their profession. The ‘Adviser of the Year’ Award recognises qualities of leadership, innovation, customer focus and professional excellence that drive our industry forward. As a longstanding champion of Australian financial advisers, Zurich has proudly partnered with the award since its inception.
Chief Distribution Officer, of Zurich’s Life & Investments, Kieran Forde, said “Felicity is a terrific role model, advice advocate and inspiration for the community. She is an outstanding Adviser who is passionate about improving the financial literacy of her clients, has an unwavering focus on continuous improvement, and is a strong advocate for advice and community. All finalists throughout the process were exceptional, however it was Felicity who shone brightest throughout the rigorous process.”

Congratulations Stephen Knight
The Michael Murphy Award is an accolade named in honour of the late Michael Murphy who was a long standing and valued life member of the AFA – a previous Director and President.
This year the Michael Murphy Award was presented to Stephen Knight. Stephen’s commitment to professionalism and advocacy is unrivalled and spans more than three decades. He has served on the AFA Board as State Director twice and has 22 years of continuous service on the WA state committee.
Along with Life Membership it is one of the highest honours bestowed by the AFA. Former recipients include;
• Dugald Mitchell OAM • Godfrey Philips OAM • Russell Collins OAM • Joe Nowak
AFA Life Membership
At AFA’s recent Thrive Conference, AFA President, Sam Perera presented Michael Nowak and Phil Anderson with life membership of the AFA for their enormous contribution over many years helping members to grow and deliver successful client outcomes.
Notable achievement
AFA Life Member, Russell Collins recently celebrated 50 years of membership of the MDRT. Congratulations Russell, who continues to make an outstanding contribution to the Advice profession. As a past recipient of the AFA Michael Murphy Award, Russell is one of very few in Australia to achieve, not only the MDRT milestone, but numerous accolades within the financial services industry.
