AFFALDS POTENTIEL Waste has always been considered something to hide and get rid off: it was simply thrown in landfills or burnt, causing environmental and economical damages.

Only recently many started to use a different approach: what if we consider waste as a resource to generate new products?

From the privat citizen that reuse pallets to replace the sofa that got borken, to the company that reclaims used plastic to produce hand bags, today the awareness on the upcycling is higher than ever.

Now everyone can contribute to reduce waste in his everyday life while creating new objects for himself or for the community.

This short book has the aim to show you where to find waste and how to reuse it to take out his hidden potential!

Even though we try to provide you all the possible information the space in this book is limited.

So don’t be lazy!

Take your phone and use your curiosity to search by yourself what is going on with upcycle in Denmark and in the world :) “There is no such thing as ‘away’. When we throw anything away it must go somewhere.”

SØGER AFFALD In a time where everybody are concerned about the resources lack, waste is unfortunately one of the only resource that is increasing.

Waste is produced in every phase of an object life cycle: source extraxtion, processing, distribution and consume.

So if you are wondering where you can find it this chapter is here to answer you.

Luckily the current raised awareness on the topic brought some forwardlooking people to develop some tools to map the waste and make it available to those who want to recycle and upcycle.

One of this is Harvestmap.org, an open source interactive map for waste designed by Superstudio, a Dutch architectural firm specialized in upcycling. Do you know “Too good to go”? Well it is basically the same, but instead of food you can save from the bin some... waste!

We are trying to promote the Harvestmap in Denmark and you help on this is more than welcome: your dad has a building company? There is a local shop that struggle to get rid of waste? Tell him of the website and go sustainable!

HVAD Wood is the on of the most flexible material and is widely produced as waste in the construction industry.

It is a linear material and therefore it usually comes in defected logs, long boards or panels. Palllets are also widely reused since they are common in transportation and storage jobs.

Leftover boards, old door panels, window frames, if not extremely ruined, can be easily reused for pieces of furniture, small objects, claddings/pavimentations and many other devices.

HVORDAN Wood can be easily cut in every shape by using a saw and assembled by using nails, screws, bolts or wood glue.

Furthermore some kind of wood can be bent to create more exciting solutions.

Simple dryjoints are also possible as shown in the pictures below while more complex and dynamic ones can be obtained by using metal elements or hinges.

PLASTIC

HVAD Plastic is the easiest waste to find: it is produced along the whole life cycle of goods, from building sites and goods industries to the domestic and distribution waste, and they come in a large variety of forms.

Bottles, dishes, cutlery, film envelopes, packaging, window frames, insulation, plexiglas panels and boards are only some of the available sources and are open to a huge amount of reuse possibilities.

HVORDAN Soft plastic, such as envelopes and bags, can be easily cut often with scissors and reused as wrapping material or as protection layer thanks to waterproof properties.

Hard plastic, such as boxes, packages and boards, can be cut using cutters or saws. Har plastic waste is often strong but bendable and therefore are adaptable to many different projects.

FABRIK

HVAD Textile waste comes mainly from production residue and old stock of industries. Tent cloth, tarpauline, carpets and flag cloth are often wasted by specialized manufacturers and are flexible for many uses due to they elasticity and impermeability.

Some waste can be found also distribution facilities or domestic waste in the form of old clothes and bags, table cloth, bed sheets and blanckets, furniture covers...

HVORDAN Textiles are usually easy to cut in the wished shape and then weaved or combined with other materials.

They can be easily reused as surface finiture or cover due to their extreme adaptability and sometimes elasticity.

METAL

HVAD The main metal waste production happens in the final phase of the products life (most of the waste generated in the production phase usually ends up recycled immediately).

Old street lamps, scaffolding bars, steel barrels, old tools, alluminium cans, containers and much more are easy to find in demolition sites, in the bins of the big distribution facilities or even in the trash of your house.

HVORDAN Metal waste is generally harder to work due to his hardness: it requires specific tools to be cut and bent,together with good skills.

Smaller pieces, such as cans or appliances, can be adapted to projects: it is a material with high strength and resistance to heat and therefore can be used also for structural parts or elements that need to be strong.

GLAS

HVAD Glass can be found in the distribution and domestic waste, in form of glass parts of furniture,mirrors or bottles, or in the production sectorm, as defected or removed window/doors panels.

There are many examples of reuse in the architectural field, such as the combination of two layers of old glass to create a thermally efficient new window. Smaller objects such as bottles can be easily reused for other deviced such as lamps, pots or art pieces.

HVORDAN Glass is very hard to cut and cannot be bent or adapted: therefore, it is suggested to reuse it with attention.

Window panels or mirrors can be reused for shelters or furniture while bottles and glasses can be assembled to create very creative objects or sculptures.

ELEKTRONISK

HVAD Electronic devices, components and domestic appliances are consumed at an increasingly fast rate.

These, combined with the production waste of defected pieces , generate a high avaiability of electronic waste that can be reused in a low-tech way.

Creative examples of reuse can be found online, from earings made from old simcards to heating systems made from laptop fans.

HVORDAN There is not a general way to work with electronic waste since they came in many different shapes and materials.

Is often better to try to reuse them in their original shape since they could be hard or unsuitable to cut or bend.

HVAD Stone waste comes mainly from caves and from the construction industry (construction and demolition sites).

It is generally fragmented concrete and bricks or removed/defected tiles and floors.

It is partially recycled in the building site for other concrete but there is room for upcycling for elements with a more regular shape.

HVORDAN Medium sized stone waste are hard to work and move but can be reused as stationary elements such as furniture or small buildings.

Small elements such as floor and roof tiles or bricks are hard to cut and cannot be bent or adapted. They still can be reused for objects or structures.

PAPIR & CARDBOARD

HVAD Paper and cardboards are largely produced in all the phases: paper is produced from offices, public building and houses while cardboard is widely available from transport companies, shopping centers and supermarkets.

Paper waste comes in sheets of all dimensions while cardboard generally comes in boards or boxes.

They are generally recycled but there is still room for upcycling opportunities, especially for the cardboards which have more rigidity.

HVORDAN Paper and cardboards are extremely easy to work: they can be cut with scissors or cutters and they are extremely adaptable to any shape.

Cardboards can also be combined by using simple dry joints, in a similar way as with the wood: many examples of cardboard furniture and simple structures have been already done.

Furthermore pieces are easily combinable by using cheap tools such as glue or tape.

GIV GODE EKSEMPLER Many examples of smart reuse of waste are available to see online.

Both individuals and companies from several sectors proposed in the last years reuse solutions at different scales, some of which will be shown in the following pages.

Bracelets, bags, sofas, tables, playgrounds, claddings, even vehicles and solar panels can be created by using waste! You only need creativity and will force :) Many more can be seen on the website shown below where everyone (and everyone means that you can too! ) can share and sell its creations with other upcyclers.

So why are you still waiting?!

Watch the examples, take inspiration and then go to build your own creative solution to enrich the upcycling community, refurnish you house and, why not, start a business!
