2014 AWARDS SUPPLEMENT

Welcome Welcome to the Aesthetics Awards 2014 supplement, in which we will be celebrating and acknowledging the great achievements of the aesthetics industry over the past year. On Saturday 6 December 2014 we witnessed a coming together of talents from across the industry, with 500 members of the medical aesthetics profession gathered in one room to re-affirm a commitment to education, clinical excellence and patient safety – our key values here at Aesthetics. The Aesthetics Awards 2014 was an evening of successes, and we felt honoured to congratulate those commended and highly commended for their excellent work, and the winners of each category for their outstanding practice within the speciality of aesthetics. Changing Faces was the charity of the evening for a consecutive year, and through your kind donations we raised over £1,600 to aid and support Amanda Cameron people and families living with conditions that affect their appearance. Changing Faces works to change Editor, Aesthetics journal people’s lives by giving practical and emotional support to adults, children and their families. They also provide training, support and advice to professionals in health and education, and an important part of their work is to transform attitudes towards people with an unusual appearance. Their belief is that with the right help everyone can learn to face their future with optimism. We thank you for your generosity on Saturday evening, and anyone looking to make a further donation can do so on the Changing Faces website: www.changingfaces.org.uk. One particular award that warranted a very special reception was the Aesthetic Source Award for Lifetime Achievement. This award highlighted the outstanding work and achievement of Dr Roy Saleh. I personally met Roy more than 20 years ago whilst working at Collagen UK, and from his work with dermal fillers and chemical peels, to his training, mentoring and lecturing, along with his innovative work in the field of non surgical procedures, he truly is an aesthetic industry pioneer and deserving winner of the prestigious and final award of the evening. On behalf of us all at Aesthetics, I’d like to thank our 12 category sponsors without whom the evening would not have been possible. We are so grateful for their continued support of this event and all that the Aesthetics Awards stands for. Lastly, I must acknowledge the hard work of our expert judging panel who kindly gave up their time in order to carefully consider the finalists in 12 categories. Entries for the Aesthetics Awards are thoroughly and fairly assessed, so you will only find the best and most deserving talent celebrated within these pages. This year we raised the bar in terms of entry criteria and were overwhelmed by the huge number and exceptionally high standard of entries. The competition, even to reach the finalist stage, was tough, and some of the results following the voting and judging were extremely close, therefore all finalists should be incredibly proud of their achievements. Our congratulations go to all of you.

The Judges A panel of 18 judges were selected to consider those categories that were decided by judges scores. For each of these categories, a group of six judges were assigned. These groups were chosen specifically for their knowledge and expertise in that particular area, as well as to ensure the avoidance of any conflicts of interest in the judging process.

Introduction This year’s Aesthetics Awards 2014 proved its reputation as the UK’s premier medical aesthetics awards event, with 500 guests in attendance at the stunning surroundings of the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in Central London. The eagerly-anticipated ceremony took place on December 6, where guests were invited to eat, socialise and honour those who have worked tirelessly to represent the highest standards in clinical excellence, product innovation and practice achievement in medical aesthetics over the past year. Special guests took to the stage to present trophies to winners of each category, and to give recognition to the finalists who were given commendation and high commendation in their category. This year’s revised and stringent judging process saw 145 entrants successfully qualify as finalists, and 21 winners presented with the prestigious Aesthetics Awards trophies. Each category required thorough and high quality written entry, which was then either judged by the expert panel, or voted for by the industry. Only the Aesthetic Source Award for Lifetime Achievement was decided upon solely by the Aesthetics team. Voiceover artist Peter Dickson, renowned for his work on the XFactor, took his role as master of ceremonies on the evening, introducing award-winning comedian Dominic Holland to the stage to entertain guests following their three-course banquet. Big winners of the night included PHI Clinic and Healthxchange Pharmacy. PHI Clinic was recognised with the 3D-lipomed Award for Best New Clinic, UK and Ireland, and the Oxygenetix Award for Best Clinic London, whilst Healthxchange won Distributor of the Year and the Cosmeceutical Range/ Product of the Year for its Obagi Medical Products. Mr Dalvi Humzah, winner of the Training Initiative of the Year for his Facial Anatomy Teaching, who also presented the The Pinnell Award for Product Innovation and was part of the judging panel for a number of categories, said, “The Aesthetics Awards is one of the premier awards event for aesthetics, recognising excellence and the outstanding achievements of practitioners, surgeons and suppliers. The whole evening was well organised and it was extremely enjoyable to meet with old and new colleagues to celebrate the end of 2014 and look forward to a great New Year. Well done to the team for putting it together and to all award finalists and winners!” Sharon Morris from Aesthetic Source commented, “We were delighted to be shortlisted and commended for Best Customer Service and highly commended for one of our cosmeceutical products. It was a most enjoyable and well-organised evening. The speeches were excellent and Dominic Holland was very funny. The room looked fantastic, and the gold carpet added glamour.” Aesthetics Awards judge Wendy Lewis, of Wendy Lewis & Co Ltd, took to the stage to present Best Customer Service by a Manufacturer or Supplier. She said, “I was very pleased to participate as a judge for the Aesthetics Awards 2014. The whole Aesthetics journal team did a fantastic job organising the evening and a good time was had by all. The entire event has elevated the UK medical aesthetics industry to a new level, and the winners should be very proud of the honour bestowed on them.” “This is the second year we’ve been to the awards,” said Huw Anthony, director of Dermalux, whose Dermalux LED product won an award for the second consecutive year. “Dominic Holland was awesome tonight in terms of how he presented the awards — his dry humour, everybody got him, and everybody enjoyed the ceremony. I thought he was absolutely brilliant and a great choice of host.“ Sharon Bennett, chair of the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses, who won their category for the fourth year in a row, praised the event, saying, “We were delighted to win the Aesthetics Award for best association and would like to thank Amanda Cameron, Chris Edmonds and all the Aesthetics team for such a professional and enjoyable event.” Aesthetic nurse Sharron Brown agreed, “A fantastic evening of sparkle and sequins. It was great to see familiar and new faces.”

Our judging panel was impressed by the high calibre of staff and the clinic’s ethos of delivering safe and professional treatments, and maintaining standards of clinical excellence. Medical director Dr Johanna Ward, who won the Aesthetics Awards Rising Star Award in 2013, said, “Winning Best Clinic South of England at the Aesthetics Awards was a wonderful and a huge achievement for us all at The Skin Clinic Sevenoaks. The award recognises the amazing new facilities that we have, and the quality of care that we try to give to each and every one of our patients. This year we expanded our premises to an eight-treatment-room, state-of-the-art clinic. It was a huge task, with months of work being done at the new premise to make it bespoke, luxurious and simply beautiful. The award is the icing on the cake for all of our team that worked so hard to achieve and realise the dream of our new clinic. Thank you so much.” Director of Dermalux, Louise Taylor, who sponsored the award said, “Dermalux is supported by many independent clinics so we were delighted to be a sponsor of a regional Best Clinic category and to show our support in return.
