WELCOME What an amazing night! While this was my first year welcoming you to the Aesthetics Awards as editor, it was my sixth year working on the event and, I can honestly say, it gets better every year! Congratulations to all those shortlisted for an Award – the standard of entries was at an all-time high, so getting to the finalist stage really should be celebrated! Many thanks to our judging panel for sparing their time to carefully and objectively assess each entrant in their assigned category – your support is really appreciated. We are also grateful to everyone who voted – it’s fantastic to see everyone in the specialty supporting each other and recognising the amazing products and services available today. Finally, thank you to our sponsors for their continued support and participation. As I said on the night, it’s a real privilege to work in a specialty with so many kind, caring and accomplished people... we don’t always talk about what’s right in aesthetics, so it’s an honour to play a role in championing best practice at the Aesthetics Awards.

THE EVENING It was aesthetic practitioner and founder of the ACE group Dr Martyn King who received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Aesthetics due to his dedication to improving standards throughout the speciality. He described his win as a ‘complete shock’, further stating, “Even though I have done a lot in my career, I feel like there is so much that I am still doing. I am really proud and feel very special to get this, but this is not the end and I am not done just yet.”

Dubbed the Oscars of the aesthetics specialty, this year’s Aesthetics Awards exceeded all expectations making it an unmissable night of celebration, networking and of course, glamour. More than 700 aesthetic practitioners, clinics, suppliers, training providers, and other industry companies gathered at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel to celebrate the year gone by. Before enjoying a delicious three-course meal in the ballroom, guests were able to network with peers, enjoy drinks and have their pictures taken at the press board. Editor and content manager, Chloé Gronow then welcomed guests to the ceremony and thanked the sponsors, judges and voters for all of their continued support. She said, “As my first year as editor, it is a privilege to be standing in front of so many new and accomplished aesthetic professionals this evening. It’s easy to come together and talk about the concerns and lack of regulation in our specialty but what we don’t often do is come together and recognise the achievements, high standards and steps forward that so many of you are taking to improve aesthetic practice. That’s why the Aesthetics Awards 2019 are so special.” She then introduced compére Jon Briggs, the original voice of Apple’s iPhone assistant Siri, this year’s comedian and host Tom Allen, and the chosen charity for the second year running, the British Red Cross. Aesthetic practitioner Dr Nestor Demosthenous said of the comedy set, “Tom Allen is by far the funniest comedian we have seen over the last five years of attending.” The first Winner of the night was CoolSculpting which took home the trophy for The SkinCeuticals Award for Energy Device of the Year. Other product Winners included Obagi Medical, Celluma and Botox. Clinics were also recognised across the country for their commitment to excellence in customer service and patient care. Aesthetic companies, including AestheticSource, Lynton Lasers Ltd, Allergan, Avanti Aesthetics Academy, Teoxane UK, Black Skin Directory, 5 Squirrels, Kendrick PR and Church Pharmacy all picked up Winners trophies throughout the evening. Kelly Tobin from Med-fx was also presented The Healthxchange Award for Sales Representative of the Year. She said, “After nearly 19 years in this industry I am absolutely blown away that I have won this Award and that everybody voted for me! Thank you so much to everyone. It’s so amazing to get together and celebrate everyone’s successes.” To finish, the practitioner categories were awarded. Jackie Partridge picked up The SpringPharm Award for Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner of the Year and Dr Jonquille Chantrey won The John Bannon Award for Medical Aesthetic Practitioner of the Year. Dr Chantrey commented, “There were some really amazing people in this category so I feel really surprised that I was presented with this Award. Thank you to the judging panel; I am deeply humbled by this win. I really believe in everything that the Aesthetics Awards and the Aesthetics journal do.”

Hayley Jones, sales and marketing director at Lynton Lasers Ltd said of the night, “We enter the Aesthetics Awards because there isn’t another ceremony in our industry that celebrates successes as well as this does. Aesthetics is a specialty that should be celebrated because the industry is booming at the moment and everyone is doing great things.” Consultant plastic surgeon and Aesthetics Clinical Advisory Board member Mr Adrian Richards concluded, “I think it was the best event ever. It was really well organised and a great success! Well done to everyone involved, the team did a great job!”

“I feel so proud to have won” Caroline Farr, Winner

Out of 10 worthy finalists, Allergan’s CoolSculpting was recognised as the top energy device of 2019. Launched in the UK in 2010 and available in more than 101 physician-led clinics across the UK and Ireland, with 177 systems in place, CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared and CE marked. In 2018, the treatment received FDA clearance to treat the submandibular area, which was then expanded to include patients with a BMI of up to 46.2. This recent clearance makes CoolSculpting the first and only non-surgical fat reduction treatment that is FDAcleared to contour the area below the jawline and improve the appearance of lax tissue in conjunction with submental fat treatments, according to Allergan. One judge commented, “Strong entry, well supported with clinical data and widespread use.” While voters said, “Great research papers, support and results!” and, “A fat reduction system that actually works!” Caroline Farr, CoolSculpting practice development manager for London commented, “I think CoolSculpting won because of the safety and the efficacy of the devise itself. We can give people the results that they are looking for but with controlled safe environments. The training is excellent, the company is excellent and I think we excel in every capacity.” Ursula O’Neill, brand manager of SkinCeuticals UK and Ireland commented, “We chose to sponsor the Energy Device of the Year Award as it connects with our integrated skincare philosophy and this is a very dynamic category within the industry that is delivering strong patient results.”

One judge said, “This is an excellent submission supported by good evidence. The Aesthetics Awards is very well-known in this industry, as is the Aesthetics journal. I call the Aesthetics Awards the Oscars of the industry, so we had to join and be a part of it. This category in particular was one of the closest to my heart. It is not an award for one team, or one product, but for the entire organisation. Therapie Clinic took home the Award for Best Clinic Group, UK & Ireland (10 clinics or more). After beginning as one clinic in the heart of Dublin in 2001, Therapie Clinic has now grown to 33 clinics across the UK, Ireland and India, with more due to open this year. The chain says patients are at the heart of everything they do and they endeavour to exceed expectations with five-star service. Judges said, “An international chain with clear protocols for patient safety, high patient satisfaction results and high growth in all aspects of new clinics, patient numbers and turnover,” and, “Fast expansion, but seem to have worked out how to do this successfully. Outstanding data.” International training manager at Therapie Laser Clinics Ltd, Michelle Marsh said of the win, “As an Irish clinic chain that launched in London in October last year, it’s been an absolute whirlwind and we are just so happy to have the most amazing team behind us to win this Award. We entered the Aesthetics Awards because we have the most amazing staff and every single one of them deserves this. They are incredible people and they are exactly what makes our business, so we are thrilled. This is for them and it’s amazing. It’s our third year at the Aesthetics Awards and, as they say, third time lucky! We are absolutely going to enter again next year.”
