Dear AES Community Members: We are proud to see our future through our perspectives from the past at AES. The school is quickly approaching its 70th year of operations in New Delhi. Our mission to joyfully pursue excellence in academics, athletics, arts, and service continues to show itself in many ways. Day in and day out, what remains consistent is our great resolve, the incredible comforts in our approaches to learning, and the immense amounts of joy seen in our classrooms, labs, sports fields, and artistic venues.

This annual report intends to offer our community and our constituents the continued focus on developing our community and our targets of excellence.

With great thanks to our educational professionals, business professionals, and wonderful community, I share this report with you!

“

The challenge of the 2020-21 school year was felt across the globe as the Covid pandemic kept schools shuttered and children learning from home. But as one of our Board members, Swati Vasuvedan always liked to say: every challenge is an opportunity.

The American Embassy School community, including families, faculty, new director Andy Torris, and the Board of Governors, seized this opportunity to come together and successfully implement hybrid learning for as much of the year as possible. Staying abreast of the latest Covid developments and how to stay safe – yet remaining focused on learning – was a major feat. Our Ambassador representatives, Edgard Kagan and Graham Mayer, as well as other partners within the diplomatic community and across the city, helped AES stay informed with a goal of getting back to campus as quickly as possible.

Despite conducting almost all of its own work online this past year, the Board was incredibly productive. Our policy committee chair, Adele Gillen, shepherded the school through significant changes to its Charter and policies, allowing for the expansion of the Board to nine members, up from seven – a pillar of envisioned good governance in the school’s strategic plan. This change will allow the Board to be an even better partner to Andy and the senior leadership team. The first election at this new size saw eight newly elected Board members, with veteran Board member Jeetu Balakrishnan returning to be president.

Lina Winyi, the chair of our environment and facilities committee, led the Board to grant final approval for a new master plan that will modernize AES’s campus yet maintain its iconic features. Peter Rhee, through his work on the audit subcommittee, created a new risk management system to better track internal audits and cure inefficiencies. All of this hard work was made possible by the tireless and creative efforts of Sarah Koch, the Board’s experienced treasurer, who helped keep the school on a financially secure path, even in the face of epic uncertainty.

I personally have relished serving as Board president for these past two years. I was proud of how our school stared Covid – this unique and frightening challenge – in the face, and persevered in providing excellent education to its students. As always, the Board of Governors is honored to serve AES’s resilient, deeply special community.

Dear Community, The school year 2020-2021 was a special year for our high school students and staff. With all the uncertainties during the summer months of 2020, we knew we had to be prepared for many scenarios - fully online, partially online with hybrid learning, and possibly some in-person instruction, as needed.

We devoted significant time and resources to preparing our teachers and learning platforms to be agile and effective regardless of the delivery model of our instructional programs. Our Counseling Program maintained its excellent service through Zoom meetings with students and families and virtual college visits. Our support to students in their social-emotional wellbeing greatly improved through having a full-time Social-Emotional Counselor. By the end of the academic year, through our students’ achievement in the IB/AP programs and our university admission results, we know we were successful in turning one of the most challenging school years into a successful one.

After the adjustment period at the end of the previous school year, we were particularly mindful of best practices for online learning and students’ socialemotional and executive function needs. Our department heads worked from July 1st with the HS administration to plan a slow start of the school year given students and teachers were at various stages of returning to India. We started with 8 school days of special programming in Time Zone Teams that focused on tech skills, executive function skills, social-emotional learning, and building community. We wanted a solid foundation for a new school year and clearly signaled to students and families that their learning would not be just like the spring - it would be better. We continued to use platforms like Google Classroom and the Week at a Glance (WAG) documents to ensure clear communication. We instituted “No New Work Wednesdays” as a way to ensure balance for our youngest students and to carve out time for classes focused on IB HL and AP coursework. We changed the class day for a later start and longer breaks between classes.

We shifted to Back to School Night and Family-Teacher Conferences via Zoom. By the end of October, we began a hybrid program that enabled us to bring some students back on campus for the first time since March 12, 2020.

The second semester started in hybrid mode with Grade 12s and one other grade levels able to attend every day. Fortunately, we were able to build to having three grade levels safely attend every day. While we requested the non-exam route for our IB exams, the IB ultimately made the same decision for all schools within India. All AP exams were online and ran into June. MESAC events such as Academic Games and Speech and Debate were able to run virtually to great success for our students. AES shared the results and times of swimming and golf with the other schools in MESAC to determine winners. Before having to go into full online mode after spring break, we were able to host a prom for Grade 11s and Grade 12s on consecutive days on the Middle School field. The field was transformed into a wonderful world where students enjoyed lights, music, food, and a dance floor all under the stars. The year culminated in another virtual graduation for our Grade 12 students.

Every challenge is an opportunity if one changes their perspective. At AES, we have taken the challenge of COVID-19 as an opportunity to better serve our students and our community. We are proud of our success and our comradery.

Dear Community, Middle School started the year online and used Zoom, Google Classroom, Google Sites to ensure the children were connected to each other and their teachers. Middle School fostered a sense of community by holding online After School Activities (ASA’s) and ASIAC events, Grade level social events, and virtual assemblies. Fun is an essential part of the Middle School experience and this was focused on through our Advisory programs and our Fort Frenzy challenges.

By November 2020, the Middle School moved to a Hybrid program with learning occurring on campus and at home simultaneously. Children were able to reconnect and use school facilities to further their learning. The fun continued with campus Fort Frenzy days full of games, laughter, and community building.

It was fortunate that the Middle School’s Hybrid program was designed to allow the seamless transition from campus, to home classes with minimal disruption to the children’s learning. By April 2021 the school had again moved to online learning and the skills and structures developed in Middle School ensured that this change was relatively easy for the entire community. Whilst online, Middle School managed to transition our Grade 8 students, welcome the Grade 5 students, and farewell our departing students in ways that were meaningful and special even during the lockdown.

Dear Community, The 2020 - 2021 school year in the ES was a challenging year that allowed our community resolve and resiliency to shine. We began the year in a completely online format. We introduced our student launchpads to provide parents a central location for the content and tools of our online learning. We delivered both synchronous and asynchronous instruction for students in multiple time zones across the globe. In November we moved into a Hybrid model with students spending at least 2 days a week in person. Our teachers prepared both in-person and online instructional programs. Our counselors delivered social-emotional lessons in both formats as well.

After Spring Break we returned to full online learning.

While many AES traditions were put on hold, we made a great effort to keep our community linked virtually. We hosted several virtual events including, virtual assemblies, a musical production with grades 4 and 5, several parent webinars, parent coffees, and our virtual farewells at the end of each semester.

Our faculty, students, and parent community demonstrated great resolve in the midst of a global pandemic and we are extremely proud of our efforts in the 2020 - 2021 school year.

Visual Arts For much of the year hybrid learning took place. The school had materials delivered to the students.

Elementary School The two art rooms were made into one to maintain social distancing. Students were sorted into two cohorts, A and B and had thirty minutes with Art online. Students learned how to utilize Seesaw, the camera, email as well as Zoom, all on their iPads to share artwork. A yearbook competition was held towards the Spring.

Middle School Everyone found a way to be creative with whatever we had at hand. Students made animation videos, photography, digital art and more. Different mediums were used as part of the learning based on what the students could find at home e.gs. baked clay, cardboard sculptures, soap carving etc.

High School Student artists were challenged with creating expressive and meaningful artworks from materials they had on hand and could use in a Home Studio environment. All were challenged to observe more closely, to gain a new perspective on familiar surroundings and to draw on personal experience and reflection for inspiration. Through sharing artwork in-progress online and presenting virtual exhibitions, students gained insight into the creative process in no less rich and unique ways. From capturing photographic imagery, to learning digital design tools, to combining textiles to represent characteristics of family members, students in every course took advantage of a wide variety of methods and materials to enrich their visual vocabulary as a lifelong resource.

Music ES Music We met with students for 30 minutes online for synchronous learning. This was a good time for us to talk and discuss more about music. Once we moved in-person, we were able to sing together and create music. Much of the class focused on being tuneful, beatiful, and artful. Students used Seesaw to demonstrate growth and document their learning throughout the year.

HS Productions Students practiced skills in writing, improvisation and editing videos. They learned more about the details on-camera acting - framing, lighting, dramatic pauses, use of props, and how directors research the balance between logistics and creativity when pitching ideas for major productions.

They were also given routine practice in how to be a group discussion facilitator in an online environment; an important skill in these times and beyond. By the end of the 2nd semester, a team of students was selected on the strength of their proposed idea to be Student Directors for the Fall 2021 Show.

Theater students participated in the MESAC Fine Arts Festival, which was all online. It featured collaborative creation with multiple MESAC schools at once, culminating in a final performance at the end of three busy days of workshops and rehearsals. The HS Thespian Honor Society produced an Online Film Festival of short films that was enjoyed by the whole community. The 1st Place film was done by one student entirely while confined to their house and unable to get campus access.

Filmmaking has experienced a resurgence in interest in the High School with students practicing a variety of skills in editing, writing, acting, directing and cinematography.

IB Theater students were able to get campus access for a short amount of time to rehearse and put on their IB Solo Projects for a small audience with safety precautions. The IB Solo Projects are original one-person shows entirely written, directed and performed by students for external assessment with the IBO.

6. HS ECO club students worked around making useful items like small sized backpacks from discarded material. MS school extended their support via sharing their sewing machines for the cause.

7. AES community sessions on Laser cutting and 3D printing were organised and conducted via online mode to bridge the gap of knowledge which the dissruptive technology has created.

8. Supporting IB math students with application of AUTOCAD software for their area calculation project work.

HS 1. Robotics II used machine learning technology as part of curriculum. We build a tiny sorter based on ML algorithm from google creative lab. It uses coding language JavaScript, arduino UNO as the circuit board and teachable machine as the machine learning platform.

Highlight projects completed with details ES Grade 4 - Civilization unit - Minecraft Edu for assessment, Tiger News was filmed and edited in the makerspace using green screen technology with 3 episodes produced during hybrid and online sessions. Assembled video and audio clips for end of semester and end of year assemblies. Lower elementary students learned color coding and directionality using Ozobots.

HS We completed Machine Learning project as part of curriculum teaching, disruptive technology project as part of community outreach and collaboration for learning and teaching.

Tiny Sorter - a DIY experiment that teaches you how to build a sorter by connecting Arduino and Teachable Machine.

It’s a little machine that you can easily make with a piece of paper — just cut, fold, assemble the motor and put in right on top of your laptop’s webcam. Then use Teachable Machine to create a machine learning model (no coding required) to sort little objects – cereal, candy, paper clips, whatever you’ve got laying around. And just like that you have your own machine learning sorter.

2. Using disruptive technology for SNOWMAN CHALLENGE 2021 : Trophy and medals were designed using open source 3 dimensional and 2 dimensional files. The same design then fabricated using two techniques from rapid protoyping, i.e., 3D printing and Laser Cutting and carpentary machine and tools.

Acrylic material is used for trophy design from laser cutting, as a base. A 3D printed snowman is placed over top of the arylic base. The same is then passed through sanding machine to make the surface smooth and free from sharp turns to make the holding of trophy as comfortable as possible.

For medals, the design was laser cut on MDF.

ES Met with stakeholders on Zoom to solve tech issues, created an app library to house and described all the apps available to ES students and teachers.

COVID Task Force Team What is the Covid Task Force Team?

With the recent surge of Covid cases in Delhi, the AES Community Covid Task Force Team provided support to the AES Community including parents, staff and contractors (and immediate family members) by providing Covid kits, awareness sessions, weekly check-ins, medical advice resource assistance, vaccination support and psychological support. The ultimate aim of the AES Covid Task Force is to protect the health and safety of staff, prevent the spread and promote vaccination.

The AES Covid Task Force consists of a team of : AES senior administration, AES staff, doctors, and parent volunteers.
