Indra Exhibits Cutting-Edge Solutions for Armies of Future

I

ndra, one of the leading global technology and consulting companies, is attending the World Defense Show that is being held in Riyadh from March 6 to 9 as one of the major global leaders of the sector and a company that is equipping the world’s most advanced armies with cutting-edge digital solutions to enable them to address the threats that will emerge in the coming years. The company stands out among the 800-plus companies registered for this event as one of the coordinators of the FCAS, the largest and most advanced defence program to date in Europe. It is a project that addresses the development of a Future Combat Air System based on a next-generation aircraft that will be escorted by several unmanned aircraft or ‘carriers’ and operated in a combat cloud, exchanging real-time data with all kinds of air, ground and naval platforms deployed in the field. The company is also the second supplier of avionics systems for the Eurofighter, one of the most advanced multi-role fighters in

existence, and one of the world’s leading radar suppliers; its Lanza 3D is one of NATO’s favourite systems. In Riyadh, the company is presenting its InShield infra-red countermeasure systems that will equip iconic aircraft in the defence world, including the A400M and the Chinook. The solution has the capability to simultaneously neutralize multiple attacks with manpad missile launchers. Indra is also showcasing the latest virtual and mixed reality applications for military training at its stand. Its Victrix system plunges soldiers into a virtual scenario in which they can train for combat missions in urban areas. This technology can connect several squads of soldiers located on different bases or areas of operations so that they can prepare for joint missions as if they were in the same place. As a leader in the field of simulation, the company will give the people who visit its stand the chance to put on virtual reality goggles and go on a virtual flight aboard one of its top-level helicopter simulators where elite pilots are trained.

Leonardo Demonstrates BriteCloud Decoy with Expanded Deception Suite

L

eonardo and the UK Royal Air Force have successfully demonstrated new high-tech deception techniques using its drinks-can-sized BriteCloud countermeasure, in cooperative trials with the Italian and Royal Danish Air Forces. The trials took place at a UK range in partnership with the RAF’s Rapid Capabilities Office (RCO), the Air and Space Warfare Centre (ASWC), and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). For the trials both of Leonardo’s BriteCloud countermeasure variants (55 and 218) were programmed with new threatdefeating waveforms, enhancing the range of techniques that BriteCloud can employ against threat radars. The development of the waveforms is part of the ongoing work to future-proof BriteCloud, ensuring that the active RF decoy will be able to defeat the latest advances in radar-guided threat technology as they come online in future operational theatres. The Italian Air Force fired BriteCloud 55 rounds from Tornado aircraft and the Royal Danish Air Force dispensed BriteCloud 218 rounds from an F-16 fighter. The new techniques proved highly effective at the trials range and the positive results will be presented to other NATO nations in an operators’ forum. BriteCloud is a countermeasure for combat, transport, and special mission aircraft that provides the latest-generation protection from radar-guided surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles. Fired like a flare, it contains a powerful miniature jammer that sends out a convincing ‘electronic ghost’ signal. This signal seduces incoming missiles towards BriteCloud as it falls away from the aircraft, ensuring that the missile detonates far away from its intended target.

20

BriteCloud is unique in that it packs gold-standard technology known as DRFM (Digital Radio Frequency Memory) into each round. DRFM allows BriteCloud to tailor its ‘electronic ghost’ signal to the specific threat radar, allowing it to fool the radar in the most effective possible way. Leonardo’s original BriteCloud 55 variant, designed for standard 55mm chaff and flare dispensers, successfully completed extensive trials before its adoption into service by the UK Royal Air Force in 2018 and is capable of defeating all known current threat systems. Meanwhile, the BriteCloud 218 variant, designed for 2x1x8 inch countermeasure dispensers, is making rapid progress towards the final stages of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT) programme for the product. The FCT will open the door to potential U.S. procurement.

MARSS Launches Game-Changer for C-UAS market

A

t the inaugural World Defense Show 2022 (WDS) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, defence and security technology specialist MARSS launched its latest, never seen before, UAS countermeasure. Combining operational experience and innovation, MARSS has created an AI-enabled autonomous interceptor that offers an intelligent, cost-effective, and low collateral solution to neutralise hostile drones. Fully integrated with NiDAR CUAS, this highspeed craft is capable of defeating category I & II drones head on from up to 5km+. Using a range of sensors to accurately detect, verify and respond to UAS threats, NiDAR C4i Operators can launch this new, incredibly agile system to defeat fast, high manoeuvring targets head-on. Stephen Scott, Head of R&D for Defense at the company, commented, “There is no doubt that UAS threats are ever-evolving and proliferating in today’s battlefield. Their autonomous nature, flight capability, and payload ensure higher levels of operational efficiency and target devastation. Their significance has led to

22

changes in warfare tactics and the shaping of geopolitical events. Recent history has demonstrated C-UAS system providers must continuously develop new solutions to keep ahead of the threat, with speed, responsiveness, and agility being key.” He added, “As hostile drones get smarter and more capable, the methods used to defeat them must do the same. Meeting this need requires a new level of thinking. And that is why we have innovated to build a more intelligent, cost-effective solution - an AI-enabled autonomous interceptor, that we believe will disrupt and dictate the future of the C-UAS market.” “The growing threat [of UAS], coupled with our lack of dependable, networked capabilities to counter them, is the most concerning tactical development since the rise of the improvised explosive device in Iraq,” said Major General Sean Gainey, Director, Joint C-UAS Office. The MARSS interceptor has broader application potential within the C-UAS market, providing intelligent protection for land, maritime and critical infrastructure. It’s an inherently safer approach that can be deployed across military and civil structures.
