Tunneling

Paul Headland, Ike Isaacson, & Mike Piepenburg, Co-chairs Paul Headland pheadland@aldeaservices.com Ile Isaacson iisaacson@brierlyassociates.com Mike Piepenburg michael.piepenburg@mottmac.com This Technical Working Group has the responsibility of reviewing environmental, engineering geology, and geotechnical questions and issues related to feasibility, planning, design, construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of tunnels and underground structures (tunnels, shafts, and caverns). The group makes recommendations to the Board for consideration with respect to position or policy statements on tunnels and underground structure related matters. The technical working group activities include: informing our membership of new and emerging technologies; improving public awareness of tunneling and underground projects (tunnels, shafts, and caverns) and promoting our profession; Improving public awareness of societal benefits associated with development of underground infrastructure; providing input to local, state, or federal regulations impacting underground infrastructure; outreach to high schools and universities regarding careers in underground engineering; and publishing papers and organizing AEG tunneling symposia and short courses.

The Tunneling TWG has conducted symposia at the last two Annual Meetings and was planning a full-day symposium at the Portland AM. They will conduct a symposium during the virtual Annual Meeting instead. The Tunneling TWG has been discussing the potential for a technical forum during 2021. If you are interested in the participating in the forum, please contact our enthusiastic co-chairs.

The Geologic Resource Management; Rock Mechanics; Solid, Hazardous & Mine Waste Management; Subsidence; and Sustainability

These TWGs have been inactive for several years. If you are interested in joining or providing leadership, please contact me at pp@aegweb.org.

The Rock Mechanics TWG practitioners have been working in the Landslide TWG (rock slope stability) or in the Tunneling TWG.

The Solid, Hazardous & Mine Waste Management TWG has been largely incorporated into the Environmental TWG.
