FAQ'S

??

EXAM SEASON

Welcome to FCSH!

Certainly, you already have some idea of what awaits you, but it is natural that doubts will arise in the future. So that you don't get caught off guard, we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions, whose answers have been tested by experience! (But be careful, for COVID-19 can lead to changes and new rules)

Is there a minimum grade required to take a subject’s appeal exam?

Yes, you are required to have at least 8 in your final grade. If you have less than 8, you fail the subject and you can't do the appeal exam. However, if you have 8 or 9 by the end of the semester, you are automatically enrolled in the appeal exam.

If I get a lower grade in the improvement exam than what I got previously in the final assessment, what happens?

Nothing, don't worry! The best grade is always the one that counts, so you will keep your assessment grade.

What’s the difference between appeal and improvement exams?

The exam that a student takes when they have failed a subject (with 8 or 9) is called an appeal exam, and the grade they get is definitive. On the other hand, students do improvement exams when they want to increase the grade to a subject which they have already passed (with a minimum grade of 9.5): you need to register for improvent exams on Inforestudante and pay a fee of 15€. Although the definitions differ, the appeal and improvement exams are usually the same. It's only the situation in which the student takes them that varies.

Is there a limit on the number of subjects to which you can take an appeal/improvement exam? And if the improvement exam score goes up, will the 15 € registration fee be refunded?

There is no limit to appeal or improvement exams, nor a refund for the latter’s registration fee. 19

HOME SWEET HOME For issues related to housing, the NEIMA and the Students Union (AEFCSH) are some of the important university clusters that can help you find a room or an apartment. Besides that, you can find the list of partnerships between housing services and NOVA FCSH on the school’s website: (https://www.fcsh.unl.pt/mecenato-nova-fcsh/mecenato-na-nova-fcsh-lista-deparcerias/#1587738251589-46e803b5-af12) The Social Welfare Services of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (SASNOVA) also currently has three university residences for students. Note that the number of places in the residences isn’t enough to meet the needs of the students from NOVA University Lisbon. Thus, it is suggested to contact the NEIMA - International Students & Exchange Office - and ask for details regarding accommodation. Study Lisbon (http://www.studyinlisbon.pt/en) is another viable online platform which comprises various links of housing services in the city. Finally, you can also try Flatio (https://www.flatio.pt/).

ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

22

If you really want to dive into the Portuguese academic experience, we advise you attend “praxe”. This is a century-old tradition in Portugal’s universities, originating in Coimbra, in which the “older” people of a course “suit up” and organize games for the freshers (who are starting their academic path), so they all can meet each other and mingle more easily. Eventually, you might choose a “padrinho” (godfather) or “madrinha” (godmother) that shall become a sort of mentor throughout your college years - someone who has “been there, done that” and can help you if you need. More events will follow to complete your integration and a code of conduct shall be passed through, as it has for generations of students. Not every student chooses to enroll in praxe though, and you can drop out at any given time. Temporary students at our university might not be able to join because this is a tradition that you are supposed to go through as a fresher and then uphold when you become older and move on to the next grade. In other words, you shall become a mentor for the new freshers after you cease to be one, so sticking around is an important part of the process. Also, if you haven’t gone through praxe in freshman year, it will be difficult to participate, as you were not initiated. Still, try to talk to your course’s praxe commission and they shall consider your specific case according to their particular code of conduct. Nonetheless, there is always the possibility that you want to buy the traditional Portuguese student’s suit (called “traje”) and wear it. The full thing is around 80/100€ and you can buy one at Copitraje. You won’t be able to “do praxe” on your course’s freshers or be their formal mentor, but you will surely look awesome in this nice (and very recognizable) outfit. The members of the Tuna (music group that usually every university has) do wear the traje in their events and they have nothing to do with praxe. So yes, any student can use the traje, especially in the end of the undergraduation, when there is a ceremony called “Queima das Fitas”. Finally, you might notice an influx of people wearing this suit every Thursday, but these are normally students associated with the Tuna or praxe.
