AN UPDATE FROM ROD & CORY Happy New Year! As we leave a monumental year behind, AE has hit the ground running with exciting things to come in the first quarter of 2021.

2020 was a year of adaptation which included working remotely, becoming Microsoft Teams experts and shifting mindsets regarding day-to-day work lives. Between implementing COVID-19 protocols in the field, to wearing face masks and social distancing, to hiring new people who to this day haven’t met their co-workers in person, it has been a significant change. But the thing is, with a little time passed, our new normal doesn’t seem so crazy anymore. We have slowly become accustomed and are moving forward.

2021 marks the 15th year of AE Engineering, Inc. Today we have 120+ employees across the State of Florida, in 13 offices. We have been blessed with continuous work from our valued clients, including all Districts of the Florida Department of Transportation and multiple municipalities across the state, from the Panhandle to Miami. Currently we are expanding our footprint to Georgia and the Carolinas. We are indeed moving forward.

On this note, we are thrilled to announce the acquisition of VRUM Planning, a transaction which was finalized in the Winter of 2020. With a brand new Planning Department in place and officially launched this January, we are now able to provide expanded and complementary services to our clients including transportation planning, mobility, access, project management, communications and funding.

ACQUISITION OF VRUM PLANNING EXPANSION OF SERVICES Towards the end of 2020, AE acquired VRUM Planning (VRUM). We intend to take the bold and thoughtful strategies and successful outcomes achieved by VRUM across Florida, Georgia and beyond to help communities understand the recent shift and necessity of public projects to incorporate fresh strategic planning ideas and robust public communication.

AE’s Planning Department will focus on transportation planning, mobility, access, project management, communications and funding, and will be led by Heather Neville, AICP, owner and founder of VRUM. Heather has spent the last decade becoming both a professional and advocate for community planning, maximizing the transportation system as a path to success. She was born and raised in North East Florida, and has committed her personal and professional life to helping community leaders in the public and private sectors. Heather is extremely accomplished and recognized in Florida as committed to safe interconnectivity for mobility solutions including bicycles, micro-mobility and shared solutions, a key element to address existing issues and new concerns due to the COVID crisis.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT I-10 (SR 8) Widening from I-295 to I-95

In the summer of 2020, AE began Contractor Quality Control services on this major roadway widening project. I-10 from I-295 to I-95 will be widened to improve traffic flow, safety and increase capacity. When complete, I-10 will feature up to ten lanes between I-295 and I-95.

Traffic volume along I-10 is expected to increase significantly over the next two decades and widening the road will alleviate traffic issues in years ahead. Temporary lane closures and nighttime detours will take place throughout the duration of the project; however these will occur in off-peak times. Every effort will be made to minimize the impact to traffic flow in the construction zone. This long term project is expected to last about five years, weather and schedule permitting.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT SR65 Graham Creek Bridge Replacement, Franklin County, Florida

AE is providing Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) services during this bridge replacement project in Franklin County, Florida, for the Florida Department of Transportation, District 3.

This project includes the SR 65 bridge replacement over Graham Creek in Franklin County (Bridge # 490018). The existing traffic is currently maintained via construction of a temporary ACROW bridge and a traffic diversion to allow access to complete the improvements. In addition to the replacement of the bridge, the roadway approaches will be reconstructed as necessary to provide proper connection to the new bridge. The existing boat ramp with FDOT R/W is also being reconstructed with additional support furnished by the use of a rock base and geogrid underlayer for additional structural support over the existing soft soils.
