preface THE HISTORY BOOK Dear readers, For years of establishment, AIESEC in FHCMC has been the sustainable platform for youth to discover and develop their leadership potential. This journey has always been full of memories and meaningful learning experiences to one another. Therefore, through this History Book, we recall those moments and celebrate the efforts of many generations who impacted on thousands of people from different backgrounds and nationalities.

As with any other LCs or MCs, we are facing one of the biggest challenges ever: the global pandemic COVID-19, when we had to pause every physical exchange activity - which was one of our core operations. Now, more than ever, leadership is the key to drive us through difficulties, enable us to have new kinds of experience, one way or another, to achieve the end goal of this journey is the fulfillment of youth potential.

7 HISTORY BOOK | AIESEC IN FHCMC

AIESEC is a global, youth-led organization focused on developing leadership in young people through facilitating cross-cultural exchange. AIESEC was founded in 1948 in 7 countries in Europe. The organisation spans 111 countries and territories and every aspect of AIESEC’s operations are managed by students and recent graduates. We have operated in this way since our inception, making us uniquely “by young people, for young people”, for over 70 years. AIESEC is a global, independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit, youth-run organization. Its members are interested in world issues, leadership and management. AIESEC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, creed, religion, national, ethnic or social origin.

Since AIESEC was founded, we have engaged and developed over 1,000,000 young people who have been through an AIESEC experience. The impact of our organisation can be seen through our alumni who represent business, NGO and world leaders, including one Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Martti Ahtisaari of Finland.

in FHCMC AIESEC in FHCMC was established in September of 2008 by Ms. Cao Thi Phuong, with 13 members, 4 teams: OGX, TM, ICX, ER.

AIESEC in FTU HCMC was one of nine branches of AIESEC in Vietnam and became the first stable university-based branch in Vietnam, including a system of universities throughout HCMC. Notable schools include: Foreign Trade University, Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology,.. As one of the LCs (Local Chapter) with a high number of affiliated universities, and thanks to the diversity in disciplines and orientation of its members, AIESEC in FHCMC has become a common home for students to study, exchange and work. Over the years, more and more students have been participating in AIESEC's diverse programs. We provide talented students from universities and also high schools in Ho Chi Minh City the opportunity of cross-cultural experience, leadership skills and international learning environment.

FOUNDER’S SPEECH The most important thing that I received from AIESEC is the international perspective and sense of how the world works. And that helped me a lot coming out of AIESEC. It's like something imprinted on me. So I think this is a place where people can learn, keep, and use it during and after AIESEC life. Take it as a learning opportunity for you to enjoy, and the experience will be more positive because, at the end of the day, AIESEC is still a pre-real life experience.

OUR CHILDHOOD In the beginning, LC FHCMC and HCMC were the same branch. Then in 2009, after MC 09.10 was established, they decided to increase the number of members for the organization not to expand the current LC but to open another LC. At that time, FTU was chosen as the next destination of AIESEC in Vietnam. The primary goal was to recruit a team to test run and figure out if it is possible to set up a university-based LC. The EB Team included 4 members: LCP - Cao Thi Phuong LCVP ER - Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung LCVP Exchange - Nguyen Van Anh LCVP TM - Pham Bich Thuy As the piloting team set up a new LC, we also met some challenges that referred to the university's regulations. Some questions arose, such as why there was an organization called FTU running social activities. Another difficulty was the feasibility of recruiting more members, because at that time the LC only had 10-12 people, and how to gain the trust of participants.

Despite those hardships, the LC operations were going smoothly, and activities such as recruitment or training were still taking place regularly.

At that time, LCM was often held at Mat Ngot cafe opposite FTU2.

After LC Expansion happened in 2008, we ran the recruitment and took on students from FTU2 to join our Membership Program. As the 2nd generation of LC, we operated with 25 active members and 5 leadership positions in functions including TM, ICX, OCX, ER, and Project. At that time, LC members were very dedicated and enthusiastic. LC Spirit at that time was "Work hard, play harder.”

AWARD NIGHT

In March 2009, LC successfully ran the Assessment Center for members’ recruitment, shortened the time of recruitment from 2 months to around 2 weeks.

Since established one year earlier, AIESEC in FHCMC had overcome numerous challenges to become one of the most active LCs in Vietnam. In order to reward and recognize talented AIESECers during that period, AIESEC in FHCMC held the biggest event in our LC called “Award Night.” This was also an occasion for all members, alumni and partners to look back and see how AIESEC had been growing and contributing to youth development.

LC BoA meeting

Our September LCM in 2010

Idea of our current LC shirt start from here

This was our the very first expansion wave in LC's history. We had 3 more EBs in the house: Finance, COMM&IM and Project Leader.

In 2010, the first time we hosted a National Conference: IGNITE in July, 2010. Our LCVP ICX, Nguyen Vu Khanh An was the IGNITE OCP 2010.

It could be said that in this year, we had built up a strong foundation for the whole history, with an obvious direction and basic necessary scopes of work.

To build up such a strong foundation, EB Team could not did it themselves but with the dedication of the whole LC members, trying their best to make our LC a light in national scale.

In 10.11, the first LC FHCMC BoA meeting was conducted with the participation of current EBs and their predecessors and MCVP.

We also received a lot of support from MC in terms of operation, legality, BoA and consulting spaces.

This term, we had a whole new function named PBox (Project based on Exchange) to focus on running projects and enhancing the number of interns coming to Vietnam. The first two projects were Living with HIV and Hope for children. In the 2010s, HIV was a major serious global public health issue. Living with HIV was born to educate high school students, freshman and sophomore the essen

essential knowledge about HIV and the prevention of HIV. The second project, Hope for children, was organized to educate and provide support physically and mentally to orphaned children. EPs (Exchange Participants) come to shelters, orphanage or SOS villages to teach English and organize seasonal activities like Mid-Autumn Festival...

At that time, our LC was very engaged and passionate about each activity. LC had the most strong coaching culture. All leaders were role models for members. LCM was held monthly, and each function took turns to host the LCM each month.

From the very beginning, term 12.13 was a foundation for the 2-peak system of the whole MC. We were the first LC in that period to continue operation during Winter phase 12.13 while all LCs, even MC, made preparations for the next Summer peak.

21 HISTORY BOOK | AIESEC IN FHCMC

To achieve those results, TM function had to conduct two TMP waves, with nearly 40 newbies recruited, double number of HR for our LC. As a result, we achieved 171 RE in total, far from the second prize LC with about 100 RE. “While other LCs were still in fear of having too many exchanges and cannot handle, we did it; the highest exchanges recorded up to now within a year”. Receiving strong legacy from previous generation, focusing on exchanges, we expanded new functions: IR (International Relations) to manage all IR networks, OGX was separated into OGX GCDP and OGX GIP, which specialized more on the product we were conducting. With the mindset: “Dare to try, dare to lead”, all LC members together made tons of trials: We operated Winter peak, generated double projects than we had been done. ádcc

We achieved the Highest Number of Exchange Award in IGNITE 2013. “At the moment being chair for NatCo, I was so surprised to announce our LC had won The Best Legacy of the year Award. And it was out of the blue when EB Team invited me by their side, appreciating my contributions to that legacy. That was the best moment ever in my AIESEC journey,” said Mr. Nguyen Thanh Danh, our beloved LCP term 12.13.

In term 13.14, we focus on our 3 main directions: Strong finance outlook - Strong performance outcome - Pineline nurturing. If the EB term 12.13 made numerous trials to find the best way, the next EB team in 13.14 had already figured out the way by predecessors legacy and started to condense our structure and implement strict focusmanagement process.

23 HISTORY BOOK | AIESEC IN FHCMC

Our financial system also suffered a revolution, with clear working process and strict expenses payment criteria. Consequently, our financial outlook was sustainable enough for the next generation to thrive.

As a consequence from massive trials from previous term, we did not focus enough for member well-being, leading to the leaving of talents. We did not have enough pineline applying for higher position. EB's structure condensing somehow decreased the negative impact of such a big wave lost of our talent pool. “We only chose the right person for the right position.”

At the end of the day, EB team was so proud to tell a story on a generation that dare to promise and dare to complete promises, when we won 3 IGNITE Awards, including Best performance LC of the year!

Compared to the previous EB, the system in term 14.15 had 3 more functions. According to the LCP, due to the significant increase in the number of exchanges we conducting, there was a need to separate iGCDP and OGX into new functions: iGIP and iGCDP, OGX1 and OGX2, respectively, based on products. One more supporting function was created LCD, with the mission to develop another branch: UEL.

25 HISTORY BOOK | AIESEC IN FHCMC

As a consequence of the expansion, our financial situation had been significantly improved: from 10 million in total cash flow to being redundant for an ending party at the end of the term, even being a supporting financial system for MC. We conducted the LC Conference for the first time.

With a retention rate of 150 members up to 90%, the conference which lasted for 3 days 2 nights was held to appreciate members’ dedication, with networking activities and capacity building for members. After the term of The New Legend, 4 members were applying for the LCP position. It could be said that during this period, we already tended to foster member capacity and motivation.

those resources, we could not make a utilize our potential markets. That was the reason why we supported UEL to develop its own branch.

In this term, we focus on 2 main operations: process enhancement and expansion of AIESEC in UEL. SUP was a function specialize for the UEL expansion process, and Nguyen Thanh Phuoc was also the first IGP of AIESEC in UEL. According to Mr. Nguyen Trong Tin, our LCVP TM term 15.16, there was a theory that an LC had to have no more than 150 members. But with those

At the same time, there were some debates happening on the global scale, back to our core: Leadership. We were in need of a clear definition of leadership, the measurement of leadership development and improvement for EXPA as well. Although there was no significant change in structure and products, our LC remained one of the best performance in Vietnam, which achieved nearly half of awards in NatCo. So proud of us!

Manager ensuring EPs’ experience and partners’ satisfaction, one MarCOM member promoting for the projects, one TM member guaranteeing the well-being of team members and one Finance member to track the budget of the project. Turning back to these periods, we faced 3 main types of problems: Finance: We cared about the profit and the healthiness of our cash flow generated from exchanges. NPS: We took into consideration our EPs’ experience and our partners satisfaction as well as members' development. Therefore, the principal operation of our LC was establishing projects for EPs to participate in. Exchange functions were responsible for setting up and building up projects, with these supporting roles of other functions in the same team: one Quality Manager

Legal: There were limitations on having foreigners as interns, for local entities. We had to rely on the networks of the locals to fasten and make the proper legal process for our interns to stay in Vietnam and conduct those activities. Avoiding brand crisis was also our primary concern in legal issues.

In 17.18 our LC had 9 functions: front office functions including MarCom OGX, oGV, oGET, iGV, and iGET; and supporting functions with TM, BD, Finance and MarCom. We tightened the synergy process between functions to ensure more effective operation. In the winter phase, our LC welcomed Ms. Agita - MCVP OD to facilitate sessions about AIESEC, providing a deeper understanding of what

what AIESEC was doing and how we could align our operation to AIESEC’s vision. This event set the first bricks for LC triangle in the next term. Culture #everyonematters appeared for the first time, with LCP’s ambition to ensure the experience of every single individual in LC. This culture was repeated in all LC activities, inspired by all members, and is still inherited today.

Other exchange functions, as well as supporting functions remained the same with the previous term.

This was also the first time the LC triangle was implemented, providing a big clear picture for LC members so that each one knew about the ultimate goal they were striving for and how they could contribute to that goal. At the same time, we also focused on fostering internal awareness of the financial situation, planning more detailed budgets, and being stricter in expenditure. As a result, not only did we achieve significant growth in exchange, but we also built a strong, sustainable financial foundation for our LC.

With the ambitious mindset, AIESEC in FHCMC always set our new milestones.” Our slogan: “Phờ Tu Sài Gòn Dô" was born in 2019 and has been remained the same until now. And our famous internal communication channel Thảo LC was created in 2019 as well.

“In term 1920, leadership for membership is focused, and when AIESECers are developed, we start to believe in AIESEC vision and give back to the organization. Members work because of both selfish and selfless reasons. Via selfish reasons, especially with strong PDP implementation, members of AIESEC in FHCMC feel engaged more. Via selfless reasons, we are all aware that youth leadership is our responsibility. That is the reason why we always want to break limits of our ability to make impacts,” our LCP Speech in iLEAD 2020.

In 2020, we suffered an event that restructures the whole AIESEC: COVID - 19 pandemic. With borders closed, we had to stop exchanges. Our current ultimate goal was to keep AIESEC sustainable. The LC Temple term 20.21 had a lot in different comparing with our current LC Temple, focusing on exchanges and member fulfillment.

37 HISTORY BOOK | AIESEC IN FHCMC

Due to the never-recorded before context happen, we had to make never-recorded decisions ever: Mid-phase replanning, adjusting our operation to flexibly adapt to the situation, to recover the fastest. In March 2020, our LC successfully conducted the first ever online LCM, with the highest engagement rate from our LC members ever: 95%. This was also the first LCM among all LCs of AIESEC in Vietnam in 2020.

We had some changes in our structure due to the context of previous phase, focusing on exchange products: iGET was separated into 2 functions iGE & iGT for a better delivery of exchange standards of different products. We also changed BD function into ER function - a better name reflecting exactly what this function did. In Summer Peak 2020, for the first time, MC decided to stop all LCs' operation until the end of June for restructure and replanning for the upcoming period.

Turning to Winter Peak 2020, our entity welcomed an alternative product for our exchanges to pilot: Virtual Professional Program (VPP) and our oGT (oGE) function was proud to be one of the first function qualified for piloting new product. In term 20.21, our LC were actualized on national scale to be a really fast-moving and high potential LC. We were proud to achieve 2 Function Excellence Award belonging to TM and oGT, also being the First Runner Up for LC Excellence Award. So proud of us!

Moreover, under MC’s direction, 2 new functions were established: YE/iGV (Youth Engagement) focusing on developing leadership in high school students, while AE/oGV (Alumni Engagement) nurturing the pool of oGV alumni as well as reconnecting AIESEC alumni.

This summer was still not easy. Since the pandemic was uncertain with outbreaks and prolonged periods of lockdown, we had to convert all of our operations virtually. Regardless of the predicament, we worked and strived really hard and gained many remarkable achievements with 5/9 awards in IGNITE 2021 and a sustainable financial base with MoFR = 15.14.

45 HISTORY BOOK | AIESEC IN FHCMC

“It is indeed true to me that my AIESEC time is a life-changing experience. Without AIESEC, my student time would have been pretty normal, and I couldn’t have become who I am now. At the age of 20, I could work professionally side by side with awesome international AIESECers from many countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan and with cool Vietnamese students. Together we created a profound impact on one another. I also had chances to attend local and oversea conferences which were genuinely eye-opening and overwhelming.

Furthermore, AIESEC enabled me to develop essential values that still serve as my fundamental way of working. During my time at AIESEC, my team always talked to each other, “In AIESEC, the more you put in, the more you take out.” I contributed my youth and my effort to AIESEC; and not only did I receive valuable experience but also meaningful connections. In fact, if life were a book, AIESEC chapter would be the most special one to any young Vietnamese students. I hope you will embrace great opportunities to explore and develop offered in AIESEC and take the best out of that. Ms. Hoang Thi Bich Hanh - LCP term 10.11

46 HISTORY BOOK | AIESEC IN FHCMC

“You will always have thoughts of leaving AIESEC, but keep trying. When you get through those troubles, you work so hard until you can overcome it and achieve something, then looking back you will see it is extremely worth it. In the old days I did not give up too soon. I feel happy with the choice of trying my best with AIESEC. AIESEC is not only a place for social activities but also for both hard and soft skills development. It was marketing knowledge I learnt in AIESEC that later helped me pass Unilever recruitment process and get a good job.

AIESEC has its core values that I want to receive, and I choose the environments that match those values. AIESEC is a great place to define yourself. With all of my experience in AIESEC, from EP, TM to VP, I have never regretted experiencing all that worthwhile journey Everyone has confusing moments at some point in life. It is impossible that you are never tired or angry, but then try to calm down, get over it and continue trying. No pain no gain, but when the pain is over, all you remember is just cheer and happiness.” Ms. Nguyen Ba Phuong Thu - LCVP COMM&IM 10.11

47 HISTORY BOOK | AIESEC IN FHCMC

The first is about joining AIESEC. Whoever you are, if you put a lot of time and thoughts into it, you will feel closer to AIESEC, so that we should take your time and participate seriously. Second, AIESEC Network is valuable. This is an asset we could utilize to support your future. Take your time to expand not only in LC but also in others. AIESEC is an excellent environment for you to try and do it again. The primary purpose of joining is to learn many things. The more you try, the better you receive. Mr. Bui Van Tot - LCP term 10..11

I really hope that AIESEC could bring you as much values as possible and you can also utilize your time and experience in this organization. Alum Engagement will soon bring about purposeful engagements which could add in values for AIESEC. Be resilient, now and then, in engaging alumni. Be consistent and patient with all of your operation. I know it will not turn to be easy going, but be innovative to learn as much as you can in your AIESEC experiences. Ms. Tran Thi Thu Trang - LCVP Finance term 10..11

We are all alumni, and to be honest, we are not able to fully understand the current situation of our LC, not even good as current LC members. It's a fact. Another fact that no one is responsible for your experience. All AIESECers should live our values, especially striving for excellence. Every outcome should be done with the best standards. That's how AIESECers do things! Mr. Nguyen Thanh Danh - LCP term 12.13

“To LC members, I hope that you can make the best, learn the most and treasure every moment in your AIESEC journey! Don’t regret because of joining AIESEC and losing other opportunities, this journey itself is already an opportunity for you to grasp. “To my old teammates, I'm so thankful to you guys because you did strive a lot in that term. Looking back on that journey, I’m so proud of all of you guys for not giving up and commit to the end. Although there were crises, uncertainties, we all overcame them by our resilience. I'm so thank you that you did not give up despite challenges and the fact that there were many things that did not go on well. We did it, together! To my beloved current LC members, I know this is a tough period for all of you guys when AIESEC is not the same as before. It's not fancy, not so wow, no more exchanges that bring about our talented alumni before. But it doesn't mean that the AIESEC experience turns to be not valuable, less valuable, or worse than what we had previously. This situation is just a challenge for the whole organization, challenging every young person in this organization, to collab and unite AIESEC.

Let take this situation as a privilege, as a challenging environment, to grow this organization, to maintain and to overcome such a harsh time as AIESEC has done for more than 70 years. We did find a way to overcome all challenges we faced during history, with the mindset and the skill set of undergraduate students, like us. This generation, unfortunately, is not able to use the legacy built by previous generations. Instead, you are the ones who create the legacy for the next generations to receive. You are the story creators, so create a story that is worth telling. Think positive about the situation, be the change you wish to see in other people and in this world. Instead of being the one who receives, let be the one who creates it. And then, you can just hand it over very proudly for the next generations to come.” Ms. Nguyen Tran Anh Tu - LCP term 18.19

Dear AIESEC in FHCMC (renownedly FTU HCMC), I am Thien An, privileged to be the LCP of AIESEC in FHCMC Term 21.22, writing this on behalf of the EB team to express gratitude towards the people that came before and show my appreciation for the people that are putting the work in right now. I came into organization as a clueless and fresh kid, I remember clearly in my newbie days how passionate the people around me were; and it was definitely contagious. The alumni that helped build this LC for years are not just capable people, but the people that have that fire in their hearts to develop themselves & others.

That fire is still here, no matter what AIESEC has evolved into. And I am confident that this fire will keep on burning. Your legacy, to my admiring eyes, were not just thousands of exchanges but the environment that you’ve created for our LC, where every single member can be challenged greatly yet still be cared for individually. I am deeply grateful for being able to be a part of this wonderful LC, the #fastmoving & #everyonematters will always burn on. For the current members, I am in awe of what you have been able to do in this uncertain and fluctuating time. Looking at how you progress in this completely different context cemented my trust for the future of this LC. I believe we will keep on moving forward and excel together no matter what is put in front of us. All we need to do now is keep that agility and continue our trailblazing journey, for the growth of not just us and the community, but the AIESECers that will come after us. Me and the EB team are immensely proud of this LC and its achievements. I believe that the alumni would be proud of us too; their effort to maintain this organization is undoubtedly not in vain. We love the LC, we do. (x3) AIESECly yours, Thien An.
