his past summer we had the gift of a lifetime as the World Cup came to North America and to our backyard. I hope as many of you as possible were able to see a game at the Linc, or another city. It was an incredible experience as fans from around the world came to our community and spread more of the joy and excitement that football/soccer brings to us all. Plus, so many of you held watch parties and other celebrations. The game is meant to be shared and designed to be a community experience.

The challenge for us now is to ride the wave of World Cup enthusiasm and excitement. The goal for us all is to translate the thrill of international football into community soccer programs.

There were tens of thousands of new soccer fans of all ages created this past summer. Let’s show them they have a place in our community. They might be spectators, but they also might be future players, coaches or referees. It’s important that we open our arms, our doors and our fields to those that want in. We have a big tent with plenty of room for more.

There was a lot of discussion about the legacy of this World Cup. The legacy of 1994 was, for the most part, the launching of Major League Soccer. It was in fact, a condition of FIFA awarding us the hosting rights. We’re a more mature soccer nation now, and MLS is in its 31st season. That means an entire generation of players have never known life without professional soccer. They’ve experienced our national teams consistently competing in World Cups (and the USWNT winning four of them!) This generation can see international soccer on TV regularly. So what is the legacy of this tournament?

For sure, a new appreciation and understanding of the game from non-fans and doubters. Culturally, soccer is accepted and now woven into the fabric of American life. The average person knows the Norwegian Row. Who’s not aware of No Scotland, No Party? We can mention Bellingham, Mbappe, Rodri in conversation with more than just soccer friends.

Perhaps the biggest legacy we should all hope for is the children that were excited and enthralled by the experience. Children, and their parents, who never watched or considered the game took part in the spectacle of the World Cup and were hooked. They saw commitment and joy of many fans. They saw the skill, athleticism and determination of the players. They were captivated by the artistry and dominance of some very special players. The legacy is to invite them in and make them part of our community for the long haul. Give the kids the opportunity to play and experience the game for themselves. As we develop these players, don’t forget we captured them first as fans. Don’t let that light go out. Keep the game fun and interesting. Make it available and affordable. When we get new players and fans, let’s keep them in and never give them reason to leave.

My challenge to all during this 26-27 season is to be a part of the legacy. Be someone who sparks an interest in the game and ignites a love of the game in children who want to play it for the first time or are coming back for another season. When more kids are playing over the next few years, then we know we did something good. And then, the Women’s World Cup comes to the US in 2031… we do it all over again!

From Southwest Philadelphia to the World Cup Salone FC Players & Mentees Take in the Global Game

or two young players from Southwest Philadelphia’s Salone FC, the opportunity to attend the FIFA World Cup match between Ivory Coast and Curaçao was much more than just watching a soccer game—it was an unforgettable experience that inspired them both on and off the field.

Accompanied by several of their Salone FC coaches, Morrison Mayah and Nardos Giday witnessed the excitement, passion, and atmosphere that only the world’s biggest soccer tournament can provide. From the energy in the stands to watching elite players compete at the highest level, the experience offered valuable lessons that will stay with them throughout their soccer journeys.

When asked what the best part of seeing a World Cup match in person was, both players shared unique perspectives.

Giday: “I feel like the best part about watching a World Cup game in person was seeing how so many people could come together and create community.”

Mayah: “The stadium, because I could see every single player and how open and far other players were, and it was my first time being at the stadium.”

Beyond the excitement of attending the match, the experience also changed the way they think about the game.

When asked how the World Cup has shaped them, their team, and their playing, Nardos reflected on the inspiration it has provided.

Giday: “I feel like the World Cup season has shaped me by making my dreams feel more achievable. It has also affected my team by creating connections—being able to relate to someone because you might have watched the same game the night before.

It affected my playing by helping me realize that mastering the basics of football before trying to play like a professional is more realistic than anything else. I’ve also started watching more football, increasing my game IQ.” Mayah spoke about how watching the world’s best players helped him better understand the game and reinforced the importance of effort and resilience.

Mayah: “The World Cup season helped shape me in a good way. My playing style especially, because now I know the value of staying open, making runs, crosses, passing, and tracking back to defend— like England versus Mexico. Also, to keep playing hard. I don’t care if you’re winning or losing, like Argentina, at all times it is possible to come back and win.”

Experiences like these demonstrate the power of soccer to inspire the next generation. By giving young players opportunities to witness the game at its highest level, Salone FC continues to provide meaningful experiences that extend beyond the training field. Seeing the world’s best compete not only fuels ambition but also reinforces the values of teamwork, perseverance, and community that define the club.

For Mayah and Giday, the World Cup was more than just a match; it was a reminder that with dedication, hard work, and belief, dreams that once felt distant can become achievable.

What This Means for Soccer in Eastern Pennsylvania First and foremost, nothing changes for the 2026-27 seasonal year. US Youth Soccer is fully operational and will continue to offer its services and operate national cups and OPD. Soccer, as you know it, will not change.

As a state association we will still maintain the same services and sanctioning, insurance, registration and education, competitions and advocacy to name a few.

Over the course of this year, multiple meetings and discussions will take place on a national level as to how the integration process will happen and at what pace. Locally, state association leaders will engage in discussions to ensure all considerations have been reviewed and how they can be addressed.

The goal for all of us is to create a stronger and more connected soccer system that can: • Bring more resources and investment to soccer locally.

• Strengthen our association and our ability to support and grow the game in all your communities.

• Create more opportunities for people to play, coach, officiate and stay in the game.

• Better support clubs, leagues, coaches and referees serving players every day.

• Make soccer easier for families to understand and navigate.

• Connect local communities more directly to U.S. Soccer and the resources, expertise and opportunities available nationally.

As part of U.S. Soccer’s Pathways Strategy, we seek to bring together members and stakeholders from across our state and American soccer to create a more connected future for the game. J

uly was a month to remember as teams from across the region brought home championship trophies and earned national recognition. From the inaugural State Cup National Invitational in Maryland to the National Presidents Cup Finals in Kansas, players and clubs showcased their talent on some of youth soccer’s biggest stages.

The first-ever 11U & 12U State Cup National Invitational welcomed top State Cup champions to Maryland for a weekend of elite competition. Eastern Pennsylvania winners include: 11U Girls Council Rock FC Bucks, 12U Girls Penn Fusion Pre-ECNL, and 12U Boys FC Delco MLS Next East.

Philadelphia SC Surf 11 Coppa Storm Black closed out July with a national championship, capturing the US Youth Soccer U15 Girls National Presidents Cup in Wichita, Kansas.

A hard-fought 1-0 victory in the championship match secured the national title and capped an outstanding tournament for the Pennsylvania side.

The team’s success was matched by an impressive haul of individual honors. Noor Grewal earned the Golden Glove Award for her standout performances in goal, while Grace Dorman claimed the Golden Boot Award after finishing with four goals. Keira DeStephanis was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, recognizing her impact throughout the week.

Research continues to reinforce something many female coaches have long known: who coaches girls matters.

hen girls are coached by women, they don’t just learn the game. They witness leadership, confidence, resilience, and expertise demonstrated by someone who looks like them. That visibility expands what they believe is possible, not only as athletes, but as future coaches, officials, and leaders themselves.

The Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport has consistently highlighted the importance of female role models in sport. Their work shows that seeing women in coaching and leadership positions helps girls develop a stronger sense of belonging and inspires them to envision themselves in similar roles one day.

REPRESENTATION MATTERS Seeing women lead helps girls believe they can lead, too.

RETENTION MATTERS Supportive coaching relationships encourage girls to stay involved in sport during the years when dropout rates traditionally increase.

The impact goes beyond representation.

Research has also found that female coaches often foster environments built on trust, communication, and meaningful relationships while still challenging athletes to compete at a high level. These player-centered coaching environments have been linked to greater confidence, enjoyment, and long-term participation in sport.

The Women’s Sports Foundation, in its report Coaching Through a Gender Lens, found that girls between the ages of 7 and 13 who enjoyed their relationship with their coach and felt supported were significantly more likely to continue participating in sports as they grew older. Simply put, positive coaching experiences help keep girls in the game.

CULTURE MATTERS Women continue to expand the definition of great coaching, showing that competitiveness and high expectations can coexist with empathy, connection, and player-centered leadership.

While great coaches come from every background, increasing the number of women in coaching provides girls with perspectives and experiences that strengthen the sporting environment for everyone.

EMBRACING DISCOMFORT: Building mental resilience by confronting tough game situations head-on rather than shielding players from pressure.

TEAM FIRST MENTALITY: Fostering an environment where individual egos take a backseat to collective goals and team values.

Identifying the Future How Talent Scouting Helps Shape the Next Generation

A

s the Assistant Technical Director for Coaching Education with Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer and a Talent Scout for U.S. Soccer, I have the privilege of working in two areas that are critical to the future of our game: developing coaches and identifying the next generation of players. While coaching education improves the learning environment for every player, talent identification ensures that our country’s most promising young athletes have opportunities to reach their full potential.

Talent scouting is far more than watching games and selecting the best players. It is a long-term commitment to identifying potential, recognizing individual qualities, and understanding how a player may develop over time. Between the ages of 12 and 20, players experience tremendous physical, technical, tactical, psychological, and social growth.

This developmental window is one of the most important periods in a player’s journey, making it essential to evaluate not only current performance but also future potential.

A U.S. Soccer Talent Scout looks beyond goals scored or athletic ability. We observe how players solve problems under pressure, make decisions, communicate with teammates, and respond to success and adversity. We evaluate technical qualities such as first touch, passing, receiving, dribbling, finishing, and defending, while assessing tactical awareness, game intelligence, work ethic, coachability, and competitive mentality. The objective is to identify players who possess the qualities necessary to succeed at higher levels of the game.

Scouting players between the ages of 12 and 20 provides several important benefits. First, it allows U.S. Soccer to establish an early understanding of the country’s player pool. Young athletes often develop at different rates, and consistent scouting ensures that late developers are not overlooked simply because they mature physically at a different pace. By maintaining long-term evaluations, scouts can monitor a player’s progression over several years rather than making decisions based on a single performance.

By strengthening our scouting efforts, we create stronger connections between local clubs, Olympic Development Programs, academies, high school soccer, college programs, and U.S. Soccer pathways. Players gain increased exposure; coaches receive valuable feedback on player development trends, and clubs become more intentional in preparing athletes for higher levels of competition.

Talent scouting also has a positive impact on coaching. As scouts identify the characteristics shared by successful players, those observations can be incorporated into coaching education. Coaches gain a clearer understanding of what qualities should be developed during training sessions and competitive matches. This creates a stronger player development model throughout the region and encourages environments where decision-making, creativity, technical excellence, and resilience are prioritized.

The benefits extend beyond individual players. Families gain a better understanding of long-term player development rather than focusing solely on short-term results. Clubs become aligned with national development standards, and communities recognize that every training session and every match may provide an opportunity for a player to demonstrate growth. This collaborative approach strengthens the entire soccer ecosystem.

Scouting is ultimately about serving the game. Every observation, every report, and every recommendation contributes to building stronger Youth National Teams and a deeper player pool for the future of U.S. Soccer. It is a responsibility that requires integrity, consistency, objectivity, and a commitment to lifelong learning. The role is not simply to discover talent but to ensure that talented players receive opportunities to continue their development within environments that challenge and support them.

As both an educator and a talent scout, I believe our greatest responsibility is to help every player maximize their potential while providing equitable opportunities to be identified. By investing in quality talent identification across the 12-to-20 age groups, we strengthen Eastern Pennsylvania, contribute to the national player pathway, and help shape the future success of soccer in the United States. Every player has a story, every community has talent, and every scouting opportunity is another step toward building the next generation of U.S. Soccer.

Second, talent identification creates opportunities for players from every community. One of the greatest strengths of American soccer is its diversity.

Outstanding players can emerge from urban neighborhoods, suburban clubs, rural communities, school programs, futsal environments, and underserved populations.

Effective scouting expands the reach of the federation by identifying talent regardless of geography or socioeconomic background.

Every player deserves the opportunity to be seen and evaluated on ability, character, and potential.

For our region, Eastern Pennsylvania has consistently produced exceptional players, coaches, and clubs that contribute to the national landscape. Our soccer culture is rich in passion, diversity, and opportunity.

Master the Basics

Spend a few minutes a day working on passing, dribbling, first touch, and shooting. Strong fundamentals make a huge difference.

Train with Both Feet

Challenge yourself to practice your weaker foot.

The more comfortable you become, the harder you’ll be to defend.

Talk to your teammates on and off the field. Great teams communicate.

Play with Confidence

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Trying new moves and taking chances is how players improve.

Stay hydrated, eat nutritious foods, stretch before and after training, and get plenty of sleep so you’re ready to perform.

Have Fun and Keep Learning Every practice and game is a chance to get better.

Stay positive, work hard, and enjoy the journey— improvement comes with consistency.

In Philadelphia, the FIFA Fan Festival buzzed with thousands of supporters throughout all 39 days of the tournament, bringing fans together to watch matches, share cultures and celebrate the world’s game. Center City transformed into a sea of flags, songs and jerseys, while the iconic Rocky statue joined the celebration by wearing jerseys from nations across the globe.

Brazilian and Ecuadorian supporters brought incredible energy, while memorable fan marches added even more color to the city.

Curaçao celebrated its historic World Cup debut with a spirited supporter march, and Croatian fans filled the streets in their unmistakable red-and-white checkered shirts.

Beyond Philadelphia, Scotland’s unforgettable supporters embraced their “No Scotland, No Party” spirit, while Norway’s viral “Row” celebration united fans around the world. Cabo Verde also captured hearts, with goalkeeper Vozinha helping lead one of the tournament’s favorite underdog stories.

In the end, the greatest legacy of the 2026 FIFA World Cup wasn’t simply the team that lifted the trophy. It was the millions of people who came together through soccer, creating unforgettable moments, shared memories and stories that will be told for generations.
