F
ollowing a tough, treacherous and thrilling opening race for the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series at virtual Texas Motor Speedway, the attention turns to the digital version of Kansas Speedway for Thursday night’s Rich Mar Florist 100. While Christian Eckes claimed the checkered flag in the Lone Star State, drivers like Brennan Poole, Josh Bilicki, Stefan Parsons, Santino Ferrucci and Ty Majeski have their sights set on reigning supreme in the Sunflower State. For the entire field, they can even earn a point before getting on track by simply tweeting the link to this race’s stream. On the surface, Kansas Speedway seems like an easy Thursday night drive. After all, it’s a welcoming 1.5-mile

speedway that balances high speed with plentiful action, right? Sure, it packs a lot of punch and pizazz but it’s one of the most challenging tracks in the NASCAR circuit. With progressive banked corners between 17 to 20 degrees, a frontstretch banked between nine to 11 degrees, and a backstretch at a relatively flat five degrees, it’s a track where perfection is expected. Drivers must show commitment with daring moves, brokering wise drafting alliances, and smarts with entering pit road. If the kickoff race at Texas was any indication, expect aggressive action all race long at Kansas. Consider how Poole put everything on the line in the final stretch of Texas, even if it resulted in a crash that derailed his bid for victory. Or how about

RACE PREVIEW Majeski, prime for a Texas throwdown, getting forced into the Turn 3 wall before getting wiped out in a Turn 1 crash only 15 laps later? As seen in various iRacing events, a slight brush with the wall results in an ill-handling beast for the drivers. Much like real life, restarts will be pivotal in dictating the pace for some or crunching up sheet metal for others. These Pickup Throwdown Series drivers will take to the virtual Kansas almost as if they would prepare for a superspeedway race at Daytona or Talladega by absolutely dropping the hammer. While it’d be easy to point out how Majeski and Briscoe have the advantage in terms of on-track and iRacing experience, don’t count out someone like Harrison Burton, Austin Theriault, and Brett Moffitt. Their on-track experiences at Kansas could come into play for this Thursday night throwdown as they’re some of the hungry, young lions of the field. 0 0 4

But then there’s experience, which sometimes outwits youth and enthusiasm. If patience still counts for something, Hermie Sadler could show his young comrades that old dogs can still learn new tricks following his strong top-10 finish last Thursday night. Ultimately, the drivers are racing not only for the great prize money, points, and pride. Rich Mar Florist will send flowers to the top-five finishing racers’ mothers. With Mother’s Day around the corner, it could be a truly sweet way to show thanks and appreciation that these drivers can show to their moms. While that means that they won’t exactly exercise proper etiquette on the track, the mothers of the Pickup Throwdown Series field can take heart that their favorite drivers are on the virtual track to win some awesome flowers.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH FOR THE RICH MAR FLORIST 100 AT KANSAS BY ROB TIONGSON
T
hursday night thunder will be on display at the virtual Kansas Speedway for Round 2 of the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series. Sure, Texas was memorable for on-track lightning, or in this case, Texas Justice with some of auto racing’s most tenacious drivers in virtual NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series trucks. Still, there’s no telling with the kind of storms that’ll brew in Kansas, a track that’s every bit as action-packed, quick

and thrilling as any 1.5-mile track gets. Kansas seems to reward aggressive racers who are willing to drive like it’s their money lap in qualifying, except with over 30 drivers around them like a swarm of bees. Although it may be a crapshoot to predict the winner for Thursday night’s race, we’ll take another shot at predicting the matchups to watch for the Rich Mar Florist 100 at Kansas with this week’s Tale of the Tape!

ON THE ACTUAL TRACK, HERMIE SADLER AND STEWART FRIESEN ARE SOME OF THE most tenacious racers around. Besides the fact that they look like actual pickup truck owners, they’re not afraid to lay it all on the line as seen in the series’ kickoff race at Texas. Sadler balanced patience and guile to take a solid top-10 finish home from treacherous Texas Motor Speedway. With both qualities being pivotal for a productive race at Kansas combined with Sadler’s plethora of on-track NASCAR experience, the beloved XFINITY Series stalwart isn’t afraid to wrestle with his behemoth virtual truck and show the youngsters how old school coolness is still in session. Meanwhile, Friesen has absolutely flourished in the past three seasons in the Truck Series. Finally breaking through to Victory Lane on two occasions last year, the 36-year-old Canadian racer is truly Truck Series tough. While Friesen may hold the advantage over Sadler, if this race comes down to patience and smarts, Sadler may prevail. 0 0 8

THIS MATCHUP IS NOT BECAUSE THE FATHERS OF THESE TWO YOUNG NASCAR RACERS happen to be NBC analysts. In this case, Snyder and Burton are fearless and confident racers, on track or virtually. After a journeyman like situation last year, Snyder’s found himself back in the Lower 48 as he primarily competes in the NASCAR XFINTY Series. As a driver who doesn’t back down but knows how to fight the right battles on the track, perhaps Snyder is a good wild card pick for the race win given his on-track Truck Series experience. On the other hand, Burton has backed up his success in the ladder series of NASCAR with a convincing XFINITY Series win at Fontana last month. Placing second at Texas for the kickoff race, Burton hopes to collect more than just having money for a Doordash delivery. In this case, the 19-year-old racer would love nothing more than to win a Pickup Throwdown Series race victory. The advantage may go to Burton, but Snyder knows how to wheel it when it’s money time. 0 0 9
