The Bubble Boys Are Holding Steady

T

here was no big shakeup surrounding the playoff bubble on Sunday at Pocono, where Jimmie Johnson remained the first driver on the wrong side of the playoff cutline for a second consecutive week. Johnson did cut into his deficit, however, as the seven-time champion moved within 12 points of the cutoff spot, which is now officially held by Ryan Newman, although Newman and Clint Bowyer are actually tied in points. Coming into Pocono, Johnson had been 17 points to the negative of the final transfer spot, while Newman had been 15th — four points ahead of Bowyer. Daniel Suarez remained in 18th and now sits 19 points behind Johnson. Ahead of Bowyer and Newman, with five races remaining before the playoff field is locked in at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is 14th-place Kyle Larson, who finished fifth at Pocono and now has a 37-point buffer on Johnson — the first man currently out.

A Pocono Win Doesn’t Seem To Be In The Cards For Kevin Harvick

B

y virtually all accounts, Kevin Harvick has enjoyed an extraordinary NASCAR career highlighted by the 2014 premier series championship, multiple Championship 4 appearances and a victory in the 2007 Daytona 500. But when it comes to getting a win Pocono Raceway, Harvick just can’t seem to close the deal — regardless of how well he runs. An all-too-similar scenario played out for Harvick on Sunday at the “Tricky Triangle” as he led a race-high 62 laps but ultimately finished sixth when the various pit strategies didn’t work out in his favor. “It was a good day,” said Harvick, who is now winless in 38 starts at Pocono, despite being consistently fast at the Pennsylvania track in recent years. “If the caution doesn’t come out, I think we were in good shape, but that’s the way it goes, especially at this place. You have to have the cautions fall your way and you have to have everything go right.”

Chase Elliott’s Summer Of Misery Continues

J

ust when it seemed like perhaps nothing else could go wrong for Chase Elliott these days, think again. Already mired in one of the worst slumps of his three-and-a-half seasons in NASCAR’s premier series, Elliott endured an especially rough weekend at Pocono, where he finished dead last in 38th after a blown right front tire sent his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet hard into the wall. Elliott, NASCAR’s most popular driver, had started the race in a backup car after also crashing in practice. Elliott has now gone seven consecutive races without a top-10 finish. “It’s just unfortunate,” the second-generation driver said. “It’s been a rough month, little over a month now.

It’s just an unfortunate rough patch. Hopefully, we can get past it. The good news is that we are still in the summer months, so the stuff that really matters is still ahead. I just hate to come to these places and not be able to learn something from it.”

1-2-3 = The Latest Evidence Of JGR’s Golden Horse Shoe

T

he year 2019 began on a heartbreaking note for Joe Gibbs Racing with the January passing of J.D. Gibbs — the son of JGR founder Joe Gibbs and a former JGR executive. From a performance standpoint, however, 2019 has been completely magical. That magic continued in a big way Sunday at Pocono where JGR drivers Denny Hamlin, Erik Jones and Martin Truex Jr. made it a clean sweep of the top three finishing positions. JGR’s other driver, four-time 2019 race winner Kyle Busch, finished ninth after leading 56 laps. With Hamlin’s win, JGR drivers have now captured 11 of the season’s 21 races to date, with Busch and Truex scoring four victories apiece and Hamlin picking up a trio of trophies. All four JGR drivers are on solid footing to make playoffs, although winless Jones has yet to formally clinch a berth. “I think right now we’re in pretty good shape,” Joe Gibbs said.

Denny Hamlin Is Suddenly Red-Hot

A

week after falling just short of victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway where he was edged by Kevin Harvick in a last-lap duel, Denny Hamlin scored a convincing triumph at Pocono — a place where had earned four previous wins but none since 2010. Now sitting fourth in the standings, Hamlin looks every bit the serious championship contender after failing to do anything particularly noteworthy on the heels of a tremendous first two months of the season that included a victory in the Daytona 500 and a win at Texas Motor Speedway. Understandably, Hamlin has newfound optimism from his recent surge, which includes three consecutive top-five finishes. “There’s not a week that shows up that I don’t think we can win,” he said. “I don’t know how many teams really could say that. Five or six, maybe? But, certainly, I think we’re versed in the sense we can win anywhere. I think our speed has showed it.”

o, apparently, despite winning a race and making the playoffs as a Joe Gibbs Racing newcomer, and despite enjoying a solid second season with JGR this year, Erik Jones has not yet been offered a ride with the company in 2020.

Asked after Jones’ second-place finish on Sunday at Pocono if JGR had a timeline for making a decision on the driver’s immediate future, team owner Joe Gibbs gave a less-thanconvincing response.

“I want to say to everybody, it’s so hard putting everything together,” Gibbs said. “I know people get frustrated because you haven’t made a decision yet on some things. But I’ll just say this: There’s sponsors involved and so many relationships involved that you’re trying to get through all that and work it all out.

“Yeah, I think, honestly, that’s part of Erik’s world. It doesn’t go easy sometimes. He knows (the situation). I keep him updated, we do. He knows we’re working as hard as we can.

Hopefully, it will be one of those things we will get put in place here pretty quick.”

Translation: JGR really wants to bring Xfinity Series hot shoe Christopher Bell to NASCAR’s top series in 2020 and hasn’t decided yet if Jones or Bell will ultimately get the nod. Of course, as recently as a couple of years ago, Jones was being hailed as the long-term future of JGR. But now — in just his third season as a full-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver, and his second with the company — Jones appears to be fighting for his job.

If so, that’s a pretty sad reality, considering Jones has by virtually all measures been successful. Maybe it’s time for JGR to reconsider how it measures success so that drivers as talented as Jones aren’t wondering this late in a season if they’re going to soon need to look elsewhere for work.

eNASCAR Takes on Pocono Raceway Points Standings are Hard Fought

n Tuesday, the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series headed off to the threeturned Pocono Raceway.

Keegan Leahy, the points leader coming in, ended Bobby Zalenski’s pole streak at three by taking pole position himself. Leahy led eight laps before the caution came out for Garrett Lowe spinning and collecting Matt Bussa, prompting pit stops. On the restart, Leahy, despite maintaining the lead on pit road, was put three-wide entering the fast turn 2, with

JTG Daughtery’s Nick Ottinger on his outside and Roush-Fenway Racing’s Zack Novak on his inside. Needless to say, this didn’t work out, and Ottinger cut across Leahy’s nose, collecting the two of them along with quite a few others. Notably, Clint Bowyer Racing teammates Nickolas Shelton and Casey Kirwin both made it through as the field wrecked around them.

They got back up front by staying out, but Novak was shuffled from the front row on a lap 72 restart, and was later collected in a wreck. Luza came home sixth, but it was Richmond Raceway eSports driver Jimmy Mullis, who, with the help of a few late-race cautions and a pair of overtime attempts, took home the checkered flag, his first of 2019. Casey Kirwin finished second, with Mullis’s teammate Malik Ray rounding out the podium.

Luza’s decent run along with Leahy’s issues combined to result in Luza retaking the points lead over Leahy by 15 points. Renegades driver Garrett Lowe, who recovered from an early race spin to finish fifth, moved up to third in points, 31 behind Luza.

On Tuesday, August 6th, the series will head to the wide-open, heart pounding 2-miler at Michigan International Speedway, where the drivers will fight it out to make the playoffs, which are now only two races away. Based on user input the new automatic transmission is calibrated for industrial and off-road capabilities. The precisely tuned transmission electronic control module (TECM) provides effortless drivability and torque demand for whatever conditions operated in. The adaptive control learns the users driving pattern delivering consistent performance regardless of operating conditions. The 6-speed hydraulic-actuated transmission has been integrated seamlessly into the ROXOR A/T for offroad, maintenance-free service and performance.

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions.

Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training.

For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things.

“I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.”

Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal

health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.”

Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery.

“All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said.

Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years.

“You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away.

I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through.

Things could always be so much worse.”

The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery.

Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His busy practice involves performing complex brain and spinal operations on patients from around the country that seek out his surgical acumen.

Natalie Decker’s Beagle Buddies by jared turner

ASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series newcomer Natalie Decker is thankful for the opportunity this year to compete at a lot of race tracks for the first time. But when she’s at the track, she’s equally happy to have some familiar companions by her side.

Those companions are an aging cat, appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a black-and-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire), and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel).

Although the pets’ permanent residence isn’t Decker’s Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment but rather her parents’ larger and more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Decker adores these animals as if they were her own.

“They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend. I swear they know how I do – if it’s a bad weekend or a good weekend – from the way they greet me when I come back into the motorhome after the race.”

Decker’s parents also have a 14-year-old black lab named Bear and a 12-year-old Italian greyhound named Merlin. They don’t travel to the track, but Decker likewise delights in seeing them whenever she gets a chance.

“I always had a beagle growing up, and when I

was really young, we had a Doberman Pinscher,” Decker noted. “So, there was always more than one dog in the house.”

Now, as a 21-year-old NASCAR driver, Decker is as passionate about animals as ever. And, she holds an extra special place in her heart for the two beagles she can always count on to make race weekends just a little more care-free.

“They’re kind of stress-relievers, and they’re so fun to play with, and they always make me happy,” she said.

“They’re so cute. I mean, they’re beagles, so they bark a lot and they’re hairy, and I hate dog hair, so I have to have that little (hair) roller with me everywhere … but I love them so much.”
