A

s the community of Harrisburg grows, so do the opportunities for businesses seeking to meet the needs of area residents.

Katie Iverson saw such an opportunity and recently brought her online clothing business to a storefront in a strip mall on Cliff Avenue.

Iverson launched Glamour Defined as an

online boutique two years ago, after noticing that a majority of her retail purchases were made using her iPhone or iPad because it was a quick and convenient solution for her fast-paced lifestyle. Opening her own business allowed her to put her education to work, having graduated from the Art Institute International of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in retail fashion management.

She says she was introduced to amazing opportunities through the school, including overseas travel to such places as Germany, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, London and Paris. Iverson also interned at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City, which is the number one luxury retailer in the country.

valuable lessons about the fashion industry, buying and merchandising, she also gained practical knowledge about assortment management while working for Best Buy Corporate in Minneapolis, and about the world of advertising while at KSFY-TV in Sioux Falls.

“This is a dream come true,” Iverson says, “I brought all of my experiences

together to create Glamour Defined, and I’m so excited to take it from the online setting to a storefront where I’ll get to work directly with my customers.”

The business name comes from Iverson’s personal philosophy about women and fashion. She carries a variety of clothing pieces in sizes extra small through 3XL to ensure her customers can

find what works for them.

“I think it is really important for women to understand that beauty doesn’t come from the tag inside your shirt, it comes from inside you. So, we are here to help women define what glamour means to them to and help them feel comfortable and confident in their wardrobe.”

Iverson says she seeks out clothing lines that include tailored, classic pieces that women can wear for years. That is one of the reasons customers will notice that much of her line is monochromatic, with a few patterns sprinkled in here and there.

“Fast-fashion comes in and goes out very quickly,” she says. “And while it is fun to have some trendy pieces, I want to ensure women can build a wardrobe with timeless pieces they can wear for a long time.”

That includes “basics” like jeans, pencil skirts, layering shirts and cardigans. But even when Iverson is looking for these basics, she still pays attention to details like fabric textures or other finishes that make the items unique.

“We may look for things like cut-out shoulders, interesting ties on tops or an unexpected fabric, like a pencil skirt in a quilted fabric. We carry Kan Can jeans that are so soft and comfortable, it’s like putting on pajamas.”

You can build a full outfit at Glamour Defined, from tops and bottoms to shoes, jewelry and handbags in a variety of styles (and made from PETA-certified vegan leather). Glamour Defined also carries a line of active wear and has other accessories to help you when you’re on the go, like their Makeup Junkie bags.

These bags lay flat on a surface, and have a zipper across the middle of the bag to provide easy access to everything inside.

Customers are always top of mind with Iverson, as she makes buying decisions that are both body conscious and focused on price point. She also sees her business as a way to connect with her customers out in the community.

“This is not only my livelihood,” she says, “but also a platform to give back to the community.”

Glamour Defined has established the annual Paint It Pink event each fall that debuts the holiday line and serves as a fundraiser to benefit the wig program at the Avera Cancer Institute. Last year’s event raised enough to provide 128 wigs for patients. Iverson also started a Glamour Goes Red event in February (American Heart Month) to benefit the American Heart Association.

In addition, she and her team of 15 employees and models regularly choose community activities they can participate in together, such as serving at The Banquet or choose nonprofits to support, such as the Humane Society, Dress For Success, the Ronald McDonald House and the McCrossan Boys Ranch.

Iverson considers her customers to be like family and uses the hashtag #GlamFam as a way to connect with them (you can even buy a shirt with the hashtag). Glamour Defined VIPs get sneak peeks into new items before they arrive at the store, and customers who watch the store’s social media accounts may get to experience a virtual buyers’ market and vote on items they’d like to see Iverson bring back to the store.

Iverson is grateful for the support she has had over the past two years with her online business and is enjoying the opportunity to connect with customers at her retail store.

“I always want to keep learning and growing, as an individual and as a business.

Harrisburg is a great community with several other businesses opening in this area. We’re becoming a real destination, and I’m excited to be part of that.”

T

he historical significance of the Powder House case does not end with the big bang itself or even with the miscarriage of justice in convicting the wrong man of the death of the victim.

Perhaps the most important result of the event is that it was directly responsible for the reinstatement of the death penalty in South Dakota.

Capital punishment had been allowed to languish in South Dakota since 1915, when it was abolished on the recommendation of Gov. Frank M. Byrne. In making his recommendation, Byrne said, “No good can possibly come from killing human beings, deliberately and in cold blood under circumstances that make every citizen a party to the deliberate act. There is no vestige of evidence to support the claim that it tends to discourage or prevent crime. On the contrary there are some indications that a wave or impulse of crime sentiment may, and sometimes does, sweep over a community as the result of a legal execution.” (From the Dakota Farmers’ Leader, Canton, 1/15/15) In those days, of course, death sentences were carried out by hanging, in public, often with great crowds looking on. Such was the case with the hanging of Thomas Egan in 1882, for the death of his wife, as chronicled by his great-grandson C. John Egan in his book Drop Him Till He Dies. “It was 9:37 by most watches when Sheriff Dickson sprung the trap with his foot. The door crashing against the underside of the scaffold floor created a sound like the crack of gunshot. Egan dropped like a large sack of seed corn.

When the rope reached full length, Egan’s body snapped viciously.

Then, like a huge broken doll, he tumbled the remaining distance to the ground. Astonishingly, the rope had broken.”

Egan was still alive, strangling, his neck unbroken. Things were hastily arranged for a second try, but that time the trap was sprung inadvertently as the hood and noose were being adjusted and again Egan was strangled rather than killed immediately. The third time, as they say, was the charm. His neck broke with a clearly audible sound.

The grisly killing of Thomas Egan before an appalled crowd of onlookers was amplified by the ironic fact that he was probably

innocent of the crime for which he was convicted. In 1927, Egan’s stepdaughter, Catherine Van Horne, confessed on her deathbed to the murder of her mother in a fit of rage following a quarrel.

(The historic marker for the Thomas Egan case stands just north of the Old Courthouse Museum, very near the site of the actual hanging.) Starting with the hanging of Jack McCall in 1877 for killing Wild Bill Hickok and ending in 1913, 14 persons were hanged in Dakota Territory and the state of South Dakota. Four of them were Native Americans.

Then, in 1915, by a vote of 62 to 24 in the lower house and (after a long filibuster) by a vote of 24 to 18 in the senate, capital punishment was abolished in South Dakota. So things stood until the powder house blew up on New Year’s Eve 1936.

The prosecution insisted that the victim had been killed in the tremendous explosion, heard for miles around.

The idea that someone would purposely blow another person to bits (only a few scraps of the body were found) infuriated many public servants. Two weeks after the blast, at the next session of the legislature, several bills to restore the death penalty were introduced. Rhetoric surrounding the bills often cited the Powder House case asking whether the fiendish Powder House Killer had purposely avoided Iowa and Minnesota, both of which did have capital punishment, to bring his victim to South Dakota, which did not. No such motive ever surfaced.

Things move slowly in the South Dakota legislature, especially

on such momentous issues, so it wasn’t until 1939, ironically just weeks after the actual Powder House killer was sentenced to life imprisonment, that capital punishment was reinstated. The event was no longer to be a public spectacle; only officials and invited guests would witness the efficiency of a more foolproof instrument of death— the electric chair.

There is about choosing the means of capital punishment over the years the sense that we were looking for something instantaneous, to avoid torturing the subject, and neat, to avoid offending the senses of the onlookers. Hence we experimented with drawing and quartering (literally pulling the body apart), burning the offender at the stake, firing anonymous bullets into the chest (with the advantage that no one person would be clearly responsible for the death), beheading ( but all that gore!), hanging (but consider Thomas Egan), electrocution (but the stench of roasted flesh!) gas, and finally our current favorite, lethal injection (but there can still be screw-ups). We want to kill the killers, but we don’t want to have to watch, to a knowledge the horrifying details.

The distancing in our executions is paralleled by the technological advancement in our lethal weaponry, putting more and more space between the killer and the victim: bludgeoning, knifing, and using an atlatl, a longbow, a cross-bow, a musket, a rifle, or a cannon. By the time of the Civil War, killing had become abstract enough to be less distasteful to young recruits. By the time of World War II, long range artillery, more powerful and more

rapid-fire arms, and most particularly aerial bombing, made it easy for personnel to ignore the fact that they were actually killing someone. Even supposed bleeding-heart liberal George McGovern apparently had few misgivings over being a bomber pilot. Yet the fire bombing of Dresden, the Tokyo raids, and most obviously the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had no other purpose than to kill as many civilians as possible (strategic as opposed to tactical bombing) in order to persuade the enemy to give up.

These days, young men who cut their teeth on video games, slaughtering scores of zombies and space invaders, eventually come to control armed drones thousands of miles away, occasionally mistaking a civilian wedding party for a gathering of terrorists, and firing their rockets, all with no apparent remorse.

The recent Las Vegas killer (name intentionally omitted), committed the epitome of modern murder by elevating himself by several hundred feet, distancing himself from his victims by several hundred yards, and imposing his own form of capital punishment. By his suicide we are left with no one upon whom to exact justice, left only with a feeling of helplessness and resignation. Will it never end?

The Kloppers moved to the 7-acre wooded estate two years ago, when they were looking to get outside the city limits, yet still be close enough to access all the city amenities, as well as work. However, work is what now is taking the Kloppers away

A major component of the prior remodeling project was opening up the main floor; creating a nice flow between the spacious kitchen, dining area, sitting area, and living room.

The kitchen features heated tile floors and custom birch cabinets, and it is both beautiful and functional. One of many favorite spots in the house is the little sitting area near the kitchen where you look out the wall of windows to the backyard. A row of skylights above the

windows lets even more natural light into the room.

“It is great for entertaining to have a sitting area here, but what I really love is that you can watch the seasons change from these windows,” she says. “The trees are beautiful, and it’s not unusual to look

out and see deer or turkeys back there.”

If it’s dark out, you can turn your attention instead to the gas fireplace or the TV that rises up out of the adjoining cabinet.

extended, the table still seems small. But, even when you have big rooms and high ceilings, you can make the house feel warm and cozy with personal touches. For the Kloppers, that means incorporating special things like artwork that honors Henk’s journey to South Dakota via Canada from

his home country of South Africa. A joyful painting hanging in the dining room was created by an artist with whom his mom went to school in South Africa.

Another painting that hangs in the living room was a gift from Henk’s parents – a colorful representation of Cape Town.

“I visited there with Henk for about a month several years ago” Jess says, “and I love this painting because we were actually there in this scene.”

Standing in the living room, with its stacked stone fireplace and curved mantle, Jess says that another thing she’ll

miss about the house is decorating for Christmas (because thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s room for a 12foot tree) and creating all of the warmth and color inside, while enjoying the beauty of the snow-covered trees outside.

The master suite is on the main floor and truly is a get-away space with its gas

fireplace and two-zone sound system. You can relax with a book near the fireplace and the windows or in the heated air tub with chromotherapy lights. The master bath has heated tile floors and a shower with multiple shower heads and massage jets, all packaged in hand-crafted Italian

ime can play tricks on you. You’re likely reading this in November, but as I’m writing, it’s still early October. So, Thanksgiving really hadn’t entered my head until someone pointed out that this year my birthday falls on Thanksgiving.

It’s not a rare occurrence; it happens every few years, thanks to the subtle oddity of the Gregorian calendar. It’s generally not a big deal to me, but often people wonder aloud if my birthday cake is a pumpkin pie (No, I usually get my mom’s peanut butter pie) or if turkey is my favorite meal (I like it, but not really my favorite.) The Avenger rate, the comment got me thinking about the holiday a little earlier this year than I typically would.

Over the years, the Thanksgiving traditions for my beloved and her family have shifted. Since my birthday falls around the holiday, most years we travel to Des Moines to see my family. The traditional turkey dinner with my in-laws might happen before Thanksgiving or on the Saturday or Sunday following. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s become a movable feast, flexible to allow for travel. They have always been happy to accommodate.

Back in the mid-nineties when Kara and I first got married, my mother-in-law, Betty, would cook a big Thanksgiving meal with all of the trimmings – potatoes (mashed AND sweet), green bean casserole, scalloped corn, cranberries, stuffing and lots of gravy.

The vintage relish tray would come out filled with olives, pickled beets or crudité, while mincemeat and pumpkin pies would round out the day. It was the stereotypical holiday with all of us eating until we were stuffed.

As the years went on, I took over bits and pieces of the cooking. First the green beans and stuffing, then the cranberries and pie were added to my list. Eventually I took over all of the cooking and the meal was moved to our house. I didn’t mind; I love the chance to cook and my recipes are a little more inventive than Betty’s. I make the green bean casserole from scratch; the stuffing is also scratchmade with fresh mushrooms and Italian sausage.

Betty’s stuffing was Stove-Top brand, but it was always made with love.

Howard, my father-in-law, loved turkey. I couldn’t make a bird that was too big for him. He would often tell the story about a brother-in-law who had cooked in the Army who claimed that no matter how big the turkey was, the carcass was essentially the same size. So if you cook a 28-pound bird, you really get a lot more meat than a typical 15-pounder. I frequently made 20-pound turkeys for the four of us, and Howard never let any of the leftovers go to waste. He often claimed a turkey sandwich the next day was better than the first meal. It was not uncommon for Betty and Howard to leave our house with the back of their station wagon filled with Tupperware and aluminum foil pouches of extras.

But here again, time is playing cruel tricks. Just before Christmas last year, Howard passed away at age 95. No one could say he hadn’t lived a full and wonderful life. He’d held many jobs through the years, including 35 years at Morrell’s. In World War II, he’d served in the Navy on Okinawa, signing up after he’d returned to Brandon from a job working as a carpenter rebuilding the base at Pearl Harbor. Years later, he’d go to work at Morrell’s early in the morning so he could meet his daughter after school. As she grew, they’d spend many nights bonding over Braves baseball on TBS. Of all the wonderful things he did, raising his only child was his crowning achievement. It was a remarkable life.

Since my own father passed a couple of years back, some of our family traditions have morphed and shifted. Our big family Christmas Eve seafood feast gave way to Beef Wellington the first year he was gone. It’s not that we wanted to abandon the traditions; it’s just that it feels different without him. And maybe that means it’s time to do something else.

So how will that big Thanksgiving feast change now that Howard’s gone? We certainly won’t need a 25-pound bird, and I can probably back off on the side dishes, but for some reason, I still want to make the traditional feast. I don’t know why this time it feels different. Instead of shifting away from the traditions, now I’m inclined to lean in, roast a turkey, make the stuffing, and fill up the relish tray. While making my dad’s favorite oysters seemed inappropriate two years ago, making Howard’s turkey this year feels like I’ll be honoring his memory.

Time and memory can be fickle and funny things. We lose loved ones and how we cope with their passing is as individual as the people who have left us. Food (and the accompanying smells) can bring powerful memories. I’ll think of my dad every time I eat clams and mussels. Likewise, a turkey dinner will always remind me of Howard. Maybe that’s one little way we can keep our loved ones with us. And if that means scrubbing the turkey roaster a couple of times a year, sign me up.

Do yourself a favor, eat something good today.

Easy Cream Cheese Dessert

Pumpkin Pie Cake

8 ounces cream cheese, softened 12 ounces sweetened condensed milk 1/3 cup lemon juice 1 ready made graham cracker crust 1 can of your favorite pie filling

15 ounce can solid pack pumpkin 12 ounce can evaporated milk 4 eggs 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 box yellow cake mix 1 cup chopped pecans

Beat the first 3 ingredients together and pour into the pie crust. Chill in the refrigerator for 6-8 hours and top with your choice of pie filling.

whipped topping or ice cream as topping Beat all ingredients except the cake mix and pecans until well blended. Pour into a greased 9x13 inch cake pan.

Sprinkle the cake mix and pecans over the top and bake at 350Ë&#x161; for about 65 minutes or until the top is lightly browned and the pumpkin mixture is set. Serve with whipped topping or ice cream. Store in the refrigerator.

o, that’s not a typo. It occurred to me while busting my brain for a Thanksgiving-themed wine article that by changing one letter I was able to embed the word “vino” in the title of this column. I love it when things work out. This year for Thanksgiving, think diversity. Thanksgiving dinner is tricky. It’s a hodge-podge of competing flavors: salty, sweet, sour, savory, rich, earthy, and everything in between. Diversify your wine selections, and you will be sure to hit the perfect pairings. Microsurgery has been used for many years and for many different surgeries when there is a need to detach and reconnect exceedingly small blood vessels and/or nerves. In recent years, it has become a more popular option for breast reconstruction.

Through this method, we are essentially building a new breast from your own tissue. In most cases, we start with a tummy tuck. We take the tissue from your stomach area by removing the skin and fat from the lower abdomen, while keeping part or all of the muscle intact. procedures plus a future surgery when the implants need to be replaced. By using your own tissue, there is no need to revisit the site in the years following the procedure, nor is there monitoring or maintenance after your initial recovery.

We are able to do microvascular breast reconstruction as a delayed reconstruction or if radiation or other complications prohibited a traditional reconstruction.

Women receiving radiation treatment respond better to microvascular breast reconstruction than traditional implants, so this option really provides an opportunity for women who previously were unable to complete reconstruction following radiation or who had to have removal of implants due to radiation.

ears of working hard and participating in your favorite hobbies can potentially take a toll on your body, especially your fingers.

Think about how much strain you likely place on your hands over your lifetime. It’s no surprise, then, that many people start to feel aches and pains in their thumbs.

Are you starting to feel pain or stiffness in your thumbs? Here are three common causes of thumb pain.

• Pain and stiffness when bending • Soreness at the base of the thumb Common treatments include, but are not limited to night splints, anti-inflammatory medication, changing your activity or a steroid injection. If non-surgical treatments do not relieve the symptoms, surgery may be recommended.

2. De Quervain’s Tendinosis 1. Trigger Thumb Trigger thumb occurs when your thumb remains stuck in a bent position, as if squeezing a trigger. This occurs when tendons become irritated and swollen and can’t move easily. Sometimes a bump may form on the tendon, adding to movement difficulty.

Farmers, musicians or people in industrial occupations commonly experience trigger thumb due to the heavy reliance and strain on their fingers.

Signs of trigger thumb include: • Snapping/popping sensation when moving the thumb • Swelling or bump in the palm • Inability to fully flex the thumb • Locking in the bent position, requiring help from the other hand to straighten

Difficult to say, but not to diagnose, this happens when tendons at the base of the thumb become swollen or constricted, and they may cause pain along the thumb side of the wrist. De Quervain’s Tendinosis may occur from overuse, but it’s also associated with pregnancy and rheumatoid disease.

Signs of De Quervain’s Tendinosis include: • Primarily pain felt over the thumb side of the wrist, along with swelling • A snapping sensation when moving the thumb • Difficulty moving the thumb and wrist Treatment focuses on reducing pain and swelling, and this can be done by applying heat or ice to the affected area, taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). These include

ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve), avoiding activities that cause pain and swelling. Especially avoid those that involve repetitive hand and wrist motions. Other nonsurgical treatment options are wearing a splint 24 hours a day for 4 to 6 weeks to rest your thumb and wrist, getting injections of steroids or a local anesthetic (numbing medicine) into the tendon sheath. These injections are very effective and are used regularly. You might need surgery if your case is severe or if other treatments don’t relieve your pain. After surgery, you will need to do physical therapy to strengthen your wrist and thumb. This will help keep the problem from coming back.

Once the area has healed and returned to full strength, you should have normal use of your hand.

3. Thumb Arthritis There are several types of arthritis, but the type most often affecting the joint at the thumb’s base is osteoarthritis, a.k.a. “wear-and-tear” arthritis. In people with thumb arthritis, the cushion-like cartilage inside the joint breaks down over time. This causes the bone to rub against bone. Symptoms of thumb arthritis can become crippling, partly because the thumb is needed so often each day. Decreased grip strength, decreased range of motion, and swelling and pain throughout your hand may occur. You may find it difficult to open jars, twist open a doorknob, or even snap your fingers. If you have arthritis in other joints like your knees, hips, or elbows, it may make thumb arthritis more likely. Women are more prone to thumb arthritis, especially those with very flexible or lax thumb ligaments. Statistically, women are six times more likely than men to develop thumb arthritis.

ere are a few Thanksgiving family tradition ideas that will have your children giving thanks this season.

Thankful Pumpkin Materials: All you need is a big pumpkin and a black permanent marker.

Instructions: Every night for the month of November, gather as a family and add a few items to your Thankful Pumpkin. Another method is to sit around a table together and discuss what things you are thankful for. Start at the top and work your way around the pumpkin with simple words describing what everyone is thankful for, ending at the bottom. You will be surprised by some of the things people start to name off as you start running out of room to write! If you run out of room, get another pumpkin.

Display them for everyone to be reminded of their blessings each day of the month.

Gratitude Tree Materials: A blank wall, construction paper, scissors, tape, and a marker.

Instructions: Grow your Gratitude Tree by cutting out shapes for the trunk and branches, then taping them up to the wall using wall-proof adhesive so it stays put.

You can make your tree as big or as small as you’d like. Next, cut out leaf shapes from construction paper in fall colors or whatever colors of your choice, and write things you are thankful for on the leaves. Tape them up to the branches of your tree throughout the month. Make this a permanent tradition by painting a tree on your wall and switching out the leaves each season.

Family Board of Thanks Materials: Bulletin board, tacks, scissors, photos and magazine clippings of your favorite things.

Instructions: Divide a bulletin board into equal sections for each member of your family or use separate mini bulletin boards for each person. Use tacks to pin up images, notes, words, drawings, and anything else that represents what they are thankful for this holiday season! This is a really fun way for each family member to express who they are creatively and what they are cherishing at the moment.

Thankful Turkey Box Materials: Small tissue box, small note pad or pieces of paper, brown paint or construction paper to cover the tissue box, construction paper in red, orange or yellow, scissors, glue, and packaging tape.

Instructions: Paint the tissue box with brown paint, or cover it with brown construction paper using tape or glue. Next, cut out a turkey body and head from brown construction paper, and glue it to the tissue box once it is completely dry (if painted). For the turkey feathers, cut out feather shapes from red, orange, and yellow construction paper. Glue the feathers around the back of the box, then use packaging tape to secure them at the back. Finish the turkey by adding some eyes, a yellow beak, and a red wattle. Stack some “thankful cards” next to your turkey and every day of the month of November have your family write down what they are thankful for and place it in the box. At the end of the month, or on Thanksgiving day, read each note out loud as a family.

“Adults, even those who don’t like going to the doctor, have experience to draw upon when it comes to a doctor’s appointment. Kids don’t have that – they can be worried about the unknown or are afraid they will be separated from

It’s quite natural for kids to have questions, but for parents, it can be overwhelming. But there are steps you can take that will help your reluctant child

make the most of a checkup.

Parents, naturally, know their kids best, Perkinson said, and that’s why there’s no one rule that can be applied outright for calming any and all fears. Some children will do better if they have advance preparation. Other kids, especially those 7 and younger, may do better if they don’t have a few days to fret over the trip to see the doctor.

“If children are worriers, you might

work with them to remind them of past visits, to make sure they know it’ll be OK,” Perkinson said. “In other cases, you might just talk about the ‘easier’ parts of a well-child checkup, like the height and weight measurements.”

Some kids may worry because the doctor or nurse may be someone new, but in most cases, moms and dads are welcome to accompany their child into the exam room.

“Let them know that you’ll be right there by their side, holding them or holding their hand,” she said. “Give them choices.

You can ask if they want to sit on the exam table or have you hold them – in many cases the pediatrician will be happy to accommodate them.”

Distractions such as a planning a “fun” outing after the doctor’s visit or perhaps a game or set of pictures on a smart phone can be a good way to occupy young minds and avoid an overwhelmed child, too, Perkinson said. Songs, humming and even breathing together can calm the nerves – both young and old.

“Some kids may feel guilty for getting sick – it sounds surprising, but it happens. They might think, ‘If only I had listened to mom, I wouldn’t have fallen out of the tree and hurt my arm.’ You can help them avoid getting down on themselves with reminders on how everyone gets sick. All kids go to the doctor – it’s the best way to get better,” Perkinson said. “Another key is evaluating your own anxiety as there are many of us adults who fear doctors as well. Be careful to avoid projecting it onto a child.”

Of course in the case of a hospitalization or unplanned trip to an urgent care clinic, the situation will be different. You won’t have time to prepare and stress levels maybe higher. By remaining calm and being positive, you can support your child. Those kids who fear vaccinations – that’s a hard one, but you can help.

“Again – being honest is best. Use your word choices carefully – skip the word shots altogether – perhaps say poke – it’s much softer and less scary,” said Perkinson. “When in doubt, talk to the clinical staff or a child life specialist. We can help you – we’re all on the same team with the same goal: healthy kids who are not scared.”

The Nutcracker Mice

by Kristin Kladstrup Hidden in Saint Petersburg’s famed Mariinsky Theater are the world’s tiniest ballet fans: the Mariinsky mice, including Esmeralda, a rising dancer in the Russian Mouse Ballet Company. Despite being unable to control her tail, Esmeralda has just been assigned the lead role of Clara in a ballet debuting at Christmas: The Nutcracker. But when she learns that the new ballet features mice as villains, her excitement turns to horror: the mice of Saint Petersburg will never come to see such a production.

Meanwhile, nine-year-old Irina is convinced that the mice she’s seen in the Mariinsky — the mice her father, the custodian, is supposed to exterminate — are not only fans of the ballet, but dancers themselves.

No one will believe her, so it falls to Irina to help save the mice everyone else considers vermin . . . and perhaps to help Esmeralda ensure the future of the mouse company.
