A NEW YOU

for the New Year BY: BRANDY SIVESIND, DIRECTOR OF SANFORD WELLNESS CENTER

nother 365 days have passed and now it’s time to set the counter back at one. It’s time to wipe the slate clean and begin again. It’s time to take those resolutions to lose weight, get

fit and live healthier and make them a reality. Here are some tips to help you stick to your health and fitness plan from day 1 to day 365, so you can make 2017 your best year yet.

“Stick-to-it” S Write it down. Put your goals on paper – and make them specific. This allows you to see exactly what steps you need to take to reach your goals. For example, a vague goal of “I want to exercise more” is common. Instead try a specific goal such as “I want to walk for 15 minutes, three times a week over the next month”. Once you achieve those goals, you can set new ones.

Be realistic. Your goals need to be attainable. If you’ve never ran before, starting with a goal to run 3 miles, seven days a week is setting yourself up for disappointment – and possibly an injury. The key is to start small, and make gradual changes as you become comfortable with this new lifestyle. For example, begin with walking for 10 minutes, three days a week, then increase your time and/or frequency gradually as the months progress.

Break it up. If your ultimate goal is to run a marathon, that can feel overwhelming in the beginning. Instead, break up that goal into

smaller, manageable goals. Instead start with a goal of running a 5K in two months. Those goals feel more achievable in our minds, but by the end of the year, you can still reach the larger goal you wanted.

Forgive yourself. You’re not perfect – and neither is the person running 10 miles on the treadmill next to you. You will have great days and “notso-great days”, and that’s OK. As you continue on your health and fitness journey, you may have slips, but don’t let it keep you from moving forward. You may need to adjust your goals, but it’s important to not give up.

Invest in your health. Find a fitness center that offers a variety of classes and equipment that fit your lifestyle. These classes can help push you further than you would on your own, and provide some accountability. Better yet, get help from a personal trainer, who is an expert at keeping you motivated and holding you accountable. Investing in your health and wellness by purchasing personal training will give you the best return on investment in terms of reaching your goals quicker and in a healthy manner.

is for use in a quiet place – not while driving or operating a rocket. Using this several times a week during stressful times or even daily will help your mind create a habit of relaxation. As you begin to listen to the words take long, slow, deep breaths. This will help your mind get the message that your body is safe now. Let the words, music, and the quiet spaces in between guide you into a relaxation to refresh and refocus your attention. You can use it before bed and then fall asleep or use it during the day with the intention to be refreshed after listening. It is about 25 minutes long.

on and Ava Christians recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary, as well as 40 years of living on their farm near Kenneth, Minnesota, just northeast of Luverne. The Christians started a dairy farm at the time, so it is very fitting that white painted milk cans sit at the base of the steps leading up to the front door of their three-story farmhouse. The house was built in 1922, as they discovered by some writing on a wall of the unfinished basement. It had been sitting empty for quite a while before they moved in. It was sturdily built though,

says Ava, so they didn’t really do much to the house at first. In fact, for the first 15 years they lived there, the only bathroom was a small one on the second floor. Their room was on the main floor, so there were lots of trips up and down the stairs. As their family grew to include three boys, they finally started updating – and heating – the bedrooms upstairs. Bigger renovations happened in 1992 and again in 2006, and that’s when some of the best features were added, says Ava, including an attached garage, a fireplace and a sunken tub in the

master bath they had created off of their main floor bedroom. Over the years, they removed some walls to open up the main floor, which allowed them to expand the kitchen, with its pale yellow walls with rich, cherry cabinets. The tile floor was a must on a farm, says Ava.

“When you’re outside working and then come inside, the kitchen is where everyone gathers, so the tile floor is perfect to handle all of that foot traffic, and it’s easy to take care of.” Even though it is a large kitchen, all of the warm earth tones give it a cozy feel. The center island offers seating for six – perfect for

when all the family gathers around, which includes three sons and their wives, along with five grandchildren (with two more arriving next spring). In addition to having plenty of counter space for cooking, there is also a built-in desk area that is functional enough to accommodate a computer, but more importantly, is spacious

enough to have room for many pictures of their grandchildren. As they started some of their remodeling projects, Ava wanted to add some touches that could take the house back to its 1922 roots. “I love the Victorian style,” she says. “We didn’t do as much as

you might see in an old bed and breakfast, but that is the direction I lean when decorating. You can see those Victorian touches with sprigs of ivy tucked along shelves or window ledges, the old-fashioned baby buggy and doll in the dining room or the lace hat and gloves on a chair next to a small table set with a tea set that had her parents had received as a wedding gift. A hutch in the dining room was a piece Ron and Ava found at an antique store. Ava used a crackle paint finish on it, and now it holds an 80-year-old sugar and creamer set from her grandmother, as well as a set of china that she received as a high school graduation gift from her parents and her high school sweetheart (Ron).

The dining room, with photos on nearly every wall, is the perfect illustration of the importance of family. “I suppose photos aren’t what some would call decorative,” says Ava, “but it’s what we love. Family is the most important thing to us, so we have photos everywhere.” One of the special photos in the dining room is an enlarged black and white photo of Ava as a small girl standing with her dad, who was holding a line of fish they had caught. Her dad passed away this past April. On the photo is a poem that talks about how they weren’t just fishing, but they were spending time and creating memories together. The home’s living room is elegant, yet comfortable. An accent wall in dark green draws attention to the fireplace flanked by tall windows with lace curtains. A grand

French doors lead from the living room out to a three-season porch, which is a favorite spot for the grandkids to play. The master suite on the main floor, also uses a color accent wall in burgundy to complement the dark wood of the four-poster bed,

in their room. The master bath has two narrow windows near the ceiling that provide natural light while still ensuring privacy. Green tile provides a backsplash for the vanity and also surrounds the sunken corner tub. The roomy bathroom also has a separate dressing table with chair. Ron and Ava “retired” from dairy farming in 2013, after 37 years. They still maintain a cattle feeding business in the barn, but they since found a new use for the old milking parlor. It is now a “cocoa parlor,” where their daughter-in-law runs her business called The Cocoa Company – making, packaging, and selling gourmet hot chocolate. Retailers in seven states carry the products, but they will ship anywhere in the U.S. Although two of their boys live out of state, this family stays closely connected. All of them will soon be meeting in the Ozarks for a combined family vacation to celebrate Ron and Ava’s 40th anniversary. There are sure to be many stories and memories shared about growing up in this Victorian farmhouse.

Renaissance BY JIM MATHIS

MAN IN THE KITCHEN

“As we go into the new year, we need to take an inventory of the great restaurants we have in our downtown business district and give them a little extra attention.”

T

enth and Phillips. The tragedy that happened on Friday, December 5, 2016 will be remembered here in Sioux Falls for years to come. The loss of a young man’s life shook our small city. It seems that everyone in town knew the McMahon family, or at the very least, we all know someone who knows them. Despite the fact that the city has tripled in size in the 28 years since I moved here, Sioux Falls is still a small town at its heart. The scars of the lost buildings will be visible in the heart of downtown for many years to come. The historic Eastwold Smoke Shop is gone. The building that was once Skelly’s is gone. The PAve bar was shut down just a few months after it had opened. All of this got me thinking about the restaurants in downtown Sioux Falls and how something like this can negatively affect their ability to stay in business. At one press conference the mayor indicated some of the businesses might be closed for months. If that had been the case, many of those small shops might never have opened their doors again. My beloved and I went to Mama’s Phried & Phillys just a couple of days after they’d been allowed to re-open. The small sandwich and fried chicken spot is located right across Tenth Street from the scene of the collapse. In the days that followed, they were shut down; their door was behind a police barricade put in place to keep the public a safe distance from the site of the collapse. Owner Matt Mothershead kept his building open and offered the police officers, fire and rescue crews and other workers a place to warm up, use the bathroom and get some water. But he was closed to the public. He told me he had to throw away hundreds of dollars’ worth of product, and he lost days of sales. With only twelve stools, it’s hard for a business like his to recoup lost sales. But he was grateful that he and his employees were safe. As we go into this new year, we need to take an inventory of the great restaurants we have in our downtown business district and give them a little extra attention. If you’re one of those people who rarely ventures downtown, I encourage you to check out what you’re missing. Fifteen years ago, Jayme Zea Mothershead (yes, she’s married

etc. for her | January 2017 37

to Matt) opened Mama’s Ladas in a tiny space on Eleventh Street with limited seating and a very limited menu; just chips, salsa and enchiladas. Mama’s Ladas is now one the fixtures in downtown Sioux Falls. A friend who has moved away from Sioux Falls always lists Mama’s as a place she has to visit when she travels back here. While Minerva’s recently changed ownership, it remains the godfather of Sioux Falls restaurants. I can’t begin to imagine the number of business deals that have been sealed after a mid-day trip through the salad bar, or how many anniversary and specialoccasion dinners have been served there. It’s where my beloved and I went for our wedding rehearsal dinner nearly 23 years ago. Nowadays, I find myself gravitating to afternoon business meetings at the attached Paramount Bar. Both are Sioux Falls classics. If your haven’t tried Chef Ryan Tracy’s Pork Belly in Dr. Pepper demi-glace at Bro’s Brasserie Americano, you’ve missed a real treat, as are his Pasta Bolognese and duck tacos. And his smoked mushroom polenta is currently my favorite appetizer on a Sioux Falls menu; and that’s a pretty strong statement. Throw in the fine selection of beers and wines and one of the best patios in town, and Bro’s adds up to a pretty solid choice. Ever wonder where the Sioux Falls chefs go when they get out of their own places? Many will tell you they like Kristina Kuehn’s K Restaurant on the 8th and Railroad boardwalk or M.B. Haskett on Phillips. Michael Haskett serves up inventive 3-course Prix Fixe meals every Friday and Saturday that will impress the most

discerning palates. K surprises its regulars with ever-changing menus of new American comfort foods and gourmet bistro choices. The quaint little restaurant has long been our choice for Friday night dinners. If you’re looking for a true fine-dining experience, Parker’s on Main Avenue gets my vote as the reigning king of the white tablecloth. Crawford’s serves up some solid steaks and cocktails and the interior décor is as good as it gets. If your sweet tooth needs a fix, Chef Chris Hanmer and his crew at CH Patisserie serve up world-class desserts; the perfect ending to any night out. On the East side of the river, you’ll find great breakfasts and desserts at Queen City Bakery, or maybe you want to try Sanaa’s Mediterranean fare. And if you’re looking for a burrito as big as your head, Jacky’s on Eighth Street serves up Guatemalan food that will change your life. While this is by no means a comprehensive list of downtown eateries, it is a brief primer to get you started coming downtown. I hope you’ll put a few of these places into your regular rotation. As our downtown begins to heal and recover from the building collapse tragedy, every new face in a shop or restaurant in our city’s center helps make the entire city stronger. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. When he’s not eating at a downtown restaurant, Jim runs ADwërks, an advertising agency proudly located in Downtown Sioux Falls.

t’s a new year, and it’s time to have fun! Resolutions can be daunting; it should come as no surprise that only 8% of resolutions are kept successfully. Here is last year’s list of most common resolutions: lose weight, get organized, spend less, save more, stay fit, quit smoking, fall in love. This year, resolve to do two things that are more fun when done together: watch movies and drink wine! Better yet, drink wine while watching movies about wine! One of my wife’s favorite movies is French Kiss. It’s funny, it’s romantic, and there are a ton of wine references! It’s the perfect movie for a wine writer. My wife’s favorite scene is when Meg Ryan’s character falls in love with the plethora of cheeses offered on a train ride to the south of France. She eats and eats and eats… until she realizes that she’s lactose intolerant…comedy ensues.

My favorite scene is at Kevin Kline’s character’s vineyard in the heart of France. He is describing how to smell aromas in wine and then makes a statement about how wine is like people. I love that line; I always think about how many times I say that a wine has great legs or lots of body or is complicated or lackluster. Every bottle of wine I encounter is like meeting someone new. Of course, just like people, there some that you want to spend more time with than others… So pick someone you like to spend time with, pick a wine you like to spend time with, and make it a great new year! Hit the movie theater and create your own memories. Here are some of my favorite wine quotes from some memorable movies. Happy New Year and Carpe Vino!

“Every bottle of wine I encounter is like meeting someone new. Of course, just like people, there some that you want to spend more time with than others…“ “Wine is like people. The wine takes all the influences in life all around it, it absorbs them and it gets its personality.” French Kiss (1995) – Luc (Kevin Kline)

“I’ll tell you where. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I’m talking about a little place called Aspen.”

“I like how wine continues to evolve, like if I opened a bottle of wine today it would taste different than if I’d opened it on any other day, because a bottle of wine is actually alive. And it’s constantly evolving and gaining complexity. That is, until it peaks, like your ‘61. And then it begins its steady, inevitable decline.”

“Stick your nose in it. Don’t be shy, really get your nose in there. A little citrus, maybe some strawberry, passion fruit and there’s the faintest soupçon of asparagus and just a flutter of a nutty Edam cheese.”

“The grape waits for no man.” Father Brown (1954) – Inspector Dubois (Gerard Oury)

“It’s a bold wine with a hint of sophistication and lacking in pretension. Actually, I was just talking about myself.” French Kiss (1995) – Kate (Meg Ryan)

ONE SIMPLE SCREEN COULD

Save Your Life

The Heart Screen at Sanford Health BY: MARIA STYS, MD, CARDIOLOGIST AND DIRECTOR OF THE WOMEN’S HEART PROGRAM AT SANFORD HEART HOSPITAL

R

ight now in this country, heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women, causing one in three women’s deaths each year. That is approximately one woman every minute! In fact, women are at higher lifetime risk of developing heart disease and stroke with 90 percent of women currently having one or more risk factors. We can prevent this. We can stop heart disease from taking our mothers, daughters, aunts and grandmothers. Though cardiovascular diseases affect 44 million American women, heart disease is preventable 80 percent of the time. So how do we

reduce heart disease deaths? One way is with the Heart Screen at Sanford, which can help you stay a few steps ahead to protect your heart and your life. This screen can help detect any problems or risk factors in your heart in their earliest, most treatable stages. “Like most women, I didn’t think I was at risk for heart disease,” said Sandy Luke. “I was wrong. A heart screen from Sanford Health saved my life. The screen showed I was in need of emergent care. I’ll always be grateful to my team and Sanford and for my life-saving screen.”

etc. for her | January 2017 53

What is the Heart Screen? Heart screens are performed to check for early heart disease or to find out the severity of heart disease. It is recommended only once every 10 years. Our heart screens include the following: • CT calcium score: Analyzes the amount of plaque in your coronary arteries • EKG: Records electrical impulses through your heart • Cholesterol (non-fasting): Measures your total cholesterol • Blood pressure • Body mass index (BMI) • Framingham Score: Estimates your risk of development heart disease within the next 10 years

Who Should Get Screened? A physician may recommend the screen if you have risk factors for heart disease, but have no symptoms. Physicians most often suggest

this procedure for women ages 40 to 75, and postmenopausal. However, anyone can choose to have the test, even without knowing your risk factors or your physician’s recommendation. Major risk factors for heart disease include: • Abnormally high cholesterol • Family history • Diabetes • High blood pressure • Smoking • Being overweight or obese • Being physically inactive

into the opening of the scanner, which then moves around your body. You may be asked to hold your breath for 20 to 30 seconds while about 200 pictures are taken of your heart. The higher the number on your CT calcium score, the more plaque you have in your heart’s arteries.

The First Step

How is the Screen Done?

Get screened. A simple heart screen at the Sanford Health Center for Screening can help you have a better understanding of what’s going on inside your body. The best solution is prevention. Women are less likely to survive their first heart attack, so it is important to prevent heart disease from reaching this point. Heart disease caught in the earliest stages gives you a better chance to fight and to live.

Small electrodes, which are connected to an EKG machine, are placed on your chest. The EKG records your heart in the resting stage. During the test, you will lie on a table connected to the CT scanner, which is a large, donut-shaped machine. The table slides

Through February 2017, the Sanford Health Center for Screening is offering the heart and vascular screens for discounted price of $25 per screen. Call (605) 312-2150 or (888) 996-4673 to schedule your screen today.

“I

f you have a body, you are an athlete”. This statement was made by Bill Bowerman, one of the co-founders of Nike, and it encompasses the philosophy of D1 Sports Training and Therapy in Sioux Falls. Don’t be intimidated by thinking that you must be an elite athlete or aspire to be an elite athlete to train at the D1 facility in Sioux Falls. Every motion you do requires you to be an athlete, whether it is getting up from a sitting position, walking or stretching. The D1 Sioux Falls facility, which opened July 2016, features over 14,000 square feet of training space including an indoor turf field, weight room, a fullservice physical therapy clinic (Orthopedic Institute) and common area lounge. “The unique thing about D1 and what sets us apart from all of the other gyms in Sioux Falls is the highly trained coaching staff we have,” says Paul Keizer, D1 manager. “In a field that is not highly regulated, most of us have not only learned from areas of higher education, but have taught as professors at the collegiate level as well.” Keizer and his D1 staff have master degrees in exercise science and include registered clinical exercise physiologists with certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the American College of Sports Medicine, the USA Weightlifting Association, and before this spring, they will be adding a Titleist Performance Institute specialist to jump start the golf season. They will all work together to help D1 members reach their health and fitness goals. “Our members range in age from eight to sixtyeight, from the beginning athlete to the highly trained professional,” says Keizer. D1 coaches have developed unique training programs for its members and offer a variety of services focusing on function, strength, agility, injury prevention, weight loss and general health and fitness. Keizer says, “We believe that whether you are a young athlete looking to improve performance in sport or an adult who is looking to live a healthy lifestyle, our passion is contagious. Everyone can continue to get better in all aspects of life and be the best versions of themselves. D1 wants to be the vehicle to drive this”. D1 also offers personal training in a variety of specialty areas and a return to sport program to get you back in action as soon as possible. Interested in finding out more about D1? Out comes the camera or smart phone as we document that first crawl, the initial babble, those first words or steps. These cute and fun milestones are some of the most rewarding joys of parenthood. But when it comes to the milestones at the next major time of change in our children – the teenage years – there’s not as much fun and cute. Doctors who focus on adolescent development, like Jesse Barondeau, MD, an Avera Medical Group pediatrician who is

and we remind parents that it continues to undergo change and fine-tuning through the age of 25,” said Barondeau. “That’s why it’s important to recognize that all the milestones of adolescence – driving, voting, smoking or drinking alcohol – happen as our brains are still growing.” Parents can benefit from a these general guidelines of the stages of adolescent mental development. In the early stage, ages 10-13, kids think in concrete terms, and they are egocentric, certain that “the world is about them.” “Things five years away just don’t register for them, and parents notice increasing independence. They tend to have less interest in your advice,” he said. “They also begin to recognize that parents are not perfect, and they begin to seek peer groups for companionship. They ‘try on’ different groups to see where they fit.” Barondeau said in the middle stage, ages 14-16, conflict with authority peaks, and teens are beginning to develop more abstract thinking skills. “When stressed, they revert to early-stage concrete thinking, and this stage is when independence becomes most apparent,” he said. “It’s also the peak time for feelings of invincibility. Kids are the ‘main character’ in the movie of their lives.”

68 friends & family |

PARENTING & PREGNANCY

That’s why the peak of risk-taking – driving accidents, unsafe sexual behaviors and alcohol/drug experimentation – tend to occur in this stage. Barondeau said it’s quite a scary time for parents, but it’s also normal, as it shapes your teen’s learning and intelligence. At this point of the last stage, ages 17-21, kids have an increased ability for abstract thinking; they begin to make independent decisions and plans. “Parents may notice they start to separate from the family directly, but show a better appreciation for mom and dad’s values,” Barondeau said. “Improved reasoning allows better problem solving and less risky choices. It’s here when the “annoying teenager” adjusts to resemble early respectable adult traits. A supportive family can be one of the biggest factors in how safely a teenager passes through each stage.” Some families split apart or lack parental guidance, and when that happens, the support of the community and peer groups can make significant impacts. “Adolescents often mature into people who reflect their parents, and that can be positive or negative, and it’s a strong reminder. Every parent should model behaviors they hope to see in their grown children,” Barondeau said.

WINTER CRAFTS s d i K r o f

BY JESSICA WEISCHEDEL

The weather outside is frightful, but inside can be delightful with these adorable crafts for kids! Polar Bear Handprint

Materials: White paint, sponge brush, black marker, blue card stock Instructions: Using a sponge brush and white paint, cover the child’s palm and fingers and carefully place it down to the card stock. You might need to fill in any empty spots left on the paper. Next, have your child place a couple of thumb prints where their thumb is, so a head shape is formed for the polar bear. Once paint has dried, turn the paper so the handprint is upside down and use a black marker to create a face on the thumb, then claws on the tip of each finger that is left. Find the perfect frame and personalize it however you’d like.

Footprint Penguin

Materials: White paper, black, white and orange paint, glue, googly eyes, and a paint brush Instructions: Paint your child’s foot with black paint and carefully stamp it on white paper. Allow the paint to dry completely, then turn the paper so the footprint is upside down. Use black paint to create wings for your penguin, then use white paint to create a body inside of the black footprint. Paint on an orange beak, then glue on two googly eyes to finish off the look. Frame and display for the winter season.

Snow Shooters

Materials: 2 white cups, 2 balloons, black and orange craft foam, scissors, material to shoot such as cotton balls, white pom poms, or balled up paper, and glue. Instructions: Cut the bottom off of the two white cups, then cut the tops off of two balloons to create a larger opening. Layer the bottom rim of each cup with glue, then stretch the balloons over the openings. Once the balloons are secure, decorate the front of the cups to look like a snowman using craft foam, or anything else you might want to use to create a snowman face. Once the snowman is completely dry, give the kids some cotton balls, white pom poms, or balled up paper to shoot from the cup by gently pulling back on the balloon!

Snowman Name

Materials: Scissors, black and orange markers, glue, white, black, and blue card stock, Q-tips, white paint. Instructions: Use scissors to cut out enough white circles to spell your child’s name, plus one. Glue them to a piece of blue card stock, starting with the last letter at the middle of the bottom and working your way up, so that the extra circle is at the top for the snowman’s head, followed by the first letter of the name. With white paint, create some snow on the bottom of the paper, then dip a Q-tip and dot the paper to create snowflakes in the background. Cut out a black top hat from card stock and glue to the top of the top circle. Use a black marker to create some stick arms and draw two eyes, and a smile from the top circle. Use an orange marker to create a triangle nose, then write your child’s name filling the letters in each circle below.

When his friends set off in their travel basket, Gary expects to stay at home, organizing his scrapbook of travel mementos and imagining far-off places. But when he accidentally falls into the travel basket and ends up a very long way from home, he discovers that flying might not be the only way to have adventures. Leila Rudge, in her gentle, colorful style, is sure to charm anyone who has ever felt like the odd one out with this satisfying story of perseverance and being comfortable in your own skin. Ages 3 yrs - 7 yrs Candlewick Press

Baby Brains by Simon James It’s never too early to start bringing up the smartest baby in the whole world. So thinks the expectant Mrs. Brains, who reads to the baby inside her tummy every night and plays music and language tapes to him during the day. Amazingly, within days of being born, Baby Brains is reading the paper, fixing the family car, and working as a doctor in the local hospital. Now even the space program is calling on him. Is there anything Baby Brains can’t do? Now available in a hardcover reissue with a new cover. Ages 4 yrs - 8 yrs Candlewick Press

Blue Penguin by Petr Horacek Far away, near the South Pole, a blue penguin is born. It is not something you see every day. “I feel like a penguin,” says Blue Penguin. “But you’re not like us,” the others tell him. Blue Penguin can’t jump or dive very well, so the others wander off and leave him behind. In his loneliness, Blue Penguin begins to dream, and he starts to sing. Will he ever convince the other penguins that he is one of them? Beautifully illustrated in icy blue hues, Blue Penguin is an affecting ode to self-expression and connection by a picture book creator whom the Washington Post has called “the thinking tot’s Eric Carle.” Ages 3 yrs - 7 yrs Candlewick Press

SENIOR PETS – “AGING IS NOT A DISEASE” Cats & dogs, on average, become “senior pets” at 7 years of age. And as your pet ages, you may start noticing some lifestyle or behavior changes that could signal a problem or need attention. If you notice any of these signs in your pet, give your veterinarian a call. • Change in weight (especially weight loss) • Change in appetite (usually less, but hyperthyroid cats will eat more) • Drinking more water • Changes in urination & defecation (changes in frequency, color, amount)

• New lumps, bumps or swellings (or changes in existing ones) • Weakness or sudden collapse • Difficulty climbing stairs or jumping • Bad odor in mouth or drooling • Seizures • Disorientation
