I
n this world of posts, texts, tweets, blogs, instant messages and @mentions, who has time to sit down and hand-write a note anymore? Valerie Carlson and the rest of the team at Spark Letterpress hope their unique letterpress creations and other trendy stationery products will motivate people to once again put pen to paper. The inspiration for Spark Letterpress comes from Valerie (art director), her sister, Diedre Johnson, and mother/owner, Bebe Stangland. Together with their creative design and printing team, they recently opened a retail store in Sioux Falls to complement the letterpress printing that they have been doing for several years for clients across the country. Letterpress printing is a centuries-old process that involves setting type and images in reverse on a plate. The plate is then inked and pressed onto a paper surface. The process then transfers the ink and leaves a deep, three dimensional impression on the paper creating a look and feel that is unlike

any other type of printing. “We have been printing in Sioux Falls for about seven years, working with individual retailers around the country,” Johnson explains. “We’re excited to now have a storefront locally so that we can interact with customers and offer a wider variety of products.” Johnson said a majority of their printing business over the years has been for wedding invitations, with albums carrying their products in stores across the United States. Now, however, customers can come downtown to the TriState Creamery Building on Main Avenue and browse through the collection of Spark’s custom stationery products, as well as their favorite brands of notecards, party papers and more.
All of the natural light coming through the windows of this historic building, which is part of the Uptown at Falls Park redevelopment, provides the perfect backdrop for showing off the brightly colored invites, notepapers, cards, wrapping paper and gift items in the store. Rifle Paper Company out of Florida offers products with beautiful illustrations, and the Old Tom Foolery brand of greetings cards will have you laughing out loud in the store. Another of the Spark family’s favorite brands is Night Owl Paper Goods, which offers products that are made from eco-
friendly, sustainably-harvested birch wood and are filled with 100% post-consumer recycled pages. At Spark, you can find items from Night Owl such as journals, smaller notepads, larger journals, bookmarks and greeting cards. And, you can write on the wood with any writing instrument. Everything in the store speaks to this group’s love of letterpress printing and the art of written communication. Scanning the samples, you realize that the possibilities are endless when it comes to creating that just-right notecard or invitation. The company’s website (letterpresslove.com) features the multitude of paper colors, ink colors and fonts available. Fortunately, the Spark creative team can help you sort through all the choices and walk you through the printing process. No longer are you limited to a plain rectangular card in an envelope for your invitations. If you are a fan of the spy thriller, you might like an invitation packaged like a top secret mission dossier, with pages inside a small manila folder that provide event specifics and a map to the location. Having a wedding in a warm location? Check out the custom-printed programs with a shell or other decorative shape affixed to craft sticks, giving your guests all the ceremony details…plus a fan to cool themselves. hat do you get when a construction business owner marries a furniture store marketing professional? A beautiful, custom-built home on the shores of Wall Lake. Chad and Sarah Javers were married in October of 2011 and moved into their new home in November. The project took less than six months to complete, and the couple worked hand-inhand to put it all together.

Chad is the owner of Javers Construction, and his past design and construction projects provided much of the inspiration for this Wall Lake home. The exterior of the house and several walls inside, including walls in the living room, master bedroom and lower level family room, feature dry stacked stone. According to Sarah, one of Chad’s signature design elements
is the intricate ceilings. “You’ll rarely see a flat ceiling in Chad’s work,” she says. A tray ceiling breaks up an “ordinary” ceiling to create variations in height and shape. In the Javers home, the tray ceilings are multi-layered in the master bedroom, octagonal in the kitchen, and deeply coffered in the living room. Dimmable lighting within the tray ceiling provides a great opportunity to
set the mood of the room. The spacious floor plan provides plenty of living space for the Javers family, which includes Sarah’s son and a new baby due in December. But, the rich, dark brown knotty alder wood and Asian hand-scraped hardwood floor create a sense of warmth and coziness throughout the house. Sarah is a self-proclaimed minimalist. “I have a hard time

arched doorways, granite kitchen countertops, double vanities in the bathrooms and a wealth of built-in storage throughout the house, including cabinets in the master bedroom walk-in closet with special space designed just for Sarah’s shoes (“and it was HIS idea,” she says). Chad and Sarah’s master suite definitely has the feeling of comfort with a fireplace built into the signature dry stack stone wall, an oversized chair next to the window looking out onto
the lake, and a master bath featuring a walk-in shower with beautiful tile work and multiple shower heads controlled by a programmable electronic keypad.

Convenience is key in the kitchen, which offers a great space for cooking and entertaining, with a gas stove top, double oven and an island for additional workspace. All of the granite for the kitchen countertops came from the same stone, so one pattern is carried throughout the space. The knotty alder from doors and trim around the house provides a rich finish to the cabinetry, and the pull-out trays for canned goods and spices, as well as the walk-in pantry, provide enviable kitchen storage. Just off the kitchen is an entry from the garage and the main

floor laundry, with built in lockers for coats, boots and shoes that can be kept neatly out of sight. For those times when the Javers aren’t outside, they can entertain downstairs with a movie on the large flat screen TV that is mounted in a custom-created space on the wall. Or, they can gather around the poker table in the bar area, which has built-in shelving, along with a full-size refrigerator, popcorn machine and an old slot machine from Las Vegas for a little touch of novelty.
Sarah’s son enjoys his space in the house, with his bedroom as well as a kid-friendly game room in the spare room in the lower level. Once again, the walk-in closet and built-in storage offers plenty of space for books, games, Legos and more. As much as they enjoy all of the features inside their home, it is the waterfront area that really makes this house a jewel on the shoreline of Wall Lake. A concrete driveway along the side of the house connects front to back, leading to a spacious backyard and an area made for entertaining.

Sarah says they weren’t sure what to call this area, because “patio” and “deck” were too confusing with the areas attached to the house and “boat house” didn’t really seem to fit. The area includes a bar, granite counters on concrete block, a large grill and an insulated cooler made from a metal pickup toolbox. The roof covering has recessed lighting, and there is a heating tower for cool evenings and a wall-mounted fan for warm days. “As the guys were working on this area, they started referring to it as the ‘Whiskey Fort,’ and the name stuck.”

Now, the words “Whiskey Fort” are cut into the metal in front of the cooler, and are featured on an aged-look metal sign on the wall. The benefit of Chad being “in the business,” Sarah says, is that he knew exactly what needed to happen at each stage as they built their home. The down side is that when he builds a house, it is eventually going to be for sale. Sarah isn’t in any hurry to sell this home by the lake, but she knows that if that happens somewhere down the road, she and Chad will once again create a home together as a family.

cups sugar (15.5 ounce) can pumpkin, solid pack eggs 2/3 cups cooking oil cups flour tsp soda tsp baking powder tsp cinnamon tsp vanilla tsp salt cup chopped nuts if desired
Mix first 4 ingredients. Mix remaining ingredients and add to the pumpkin mixture. Pour the muffin batter into 24 paper lined muffin tins. Bake at 350Ëš for 3335 minutes.
Frozen Chocolate Dipped Bananas 2 large bananas 1/3 cup milk chocolate chips 1/3 cup peanut butter coconut flakes or chopped nuts if desired Cut each banana into 5 or 6 pieces and place on a large plate that has been covered with waxed paper. Heat the chocolate chips and peanut butter in the microwave or in a double-boiler until smooth. Now dip the banana pieces into the mixture and place on the waxed paper. After you have dipped them all, use the remaining mixture to make sure the tops and sides are all covered. Sprinkle with nuts or coconut and place in the freezer for 6-8 hours.

any years ago, my beloved and I and two very good friends spent a better part of a summer exploring the small town steakhouses just outside of Sioux Falls. Yes, Sioux Falls offers an abundance of great restaurants, but we thought it would be fun to do a little comparison of what kind of offerings we could find in the communities just outside of the city limits. Our journeys took us to Brandon, Tea, Flandreau, Canton and points beyond. What we found was more than just a few good steaks; we found quaint little adventures, right in our own backyard. These little trips came to mind a couple of weeks ago when another couple picked us up at our house and we headed off for dinner. This time we ventured a little bit further than normal, but what we found at the end was a gem of a restaurant in LeMars, Iowa. More on that later. While the quality of food varies greatly, we have come to learn that most of the small town steakhouses feel very comfortable, kind of like an old friend’s house. I’ve often wondered if Chinese
restaurants all got their décor delivered from the same truck; each one gets the same lanterns, red wallpaper and plastic gold dragon wall art. They all seem to have come out of the same catalog. Steakhouses are much the same; wood paneled walls circa 1972, melamine salad bowls and the three-option salad dressing server. It’s just a different catalog. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. That predictable look makes them all the more comfortable. Don’t let the décor scare you; it seems to me that they are focusing on the food not remodeling. Through these visits I’ve learned a few things. First, always ask the server for suggestions, because 9 times out of 10, that waitress has been working there since the wood paneling was installed. She knows what is good, and she won’t be afraid to tell you. If she says order the onion rings or the ribeye, I’ll order the onion rings or ribeye. Second, skip the wine list. With one exception, the wine list is short and not that good; inexpensive table wines, white zinfandel and wines by the glass that probably

come out of a box. But the cocktails are stiff and inexpensive, so that’s the safer way to go. Lesson 3, designate a driver. The exception to the wine list rule? Archie’s Waeside in LeMars, Iowa. It’s a little further than we usually venture; 70 miles and we generally stay within 45, but it’s worth the extra drive. Archie’s is, in many ways, the typical steakhouse. Larger than most, they had to order two of the décor packages back in 1972. The wood paneling is warm, the booths are well worn and the food is served from stainless steel carts. Our server that night had been there 18 years, another who brought the wine, has spent the last 35 years in that apron. If someone works there that long, it must be a pretty good place. And the wine list? Ask and they will show you a list of rare and exquisite wines from all around the globe. If you can’t decide, ask what Bob (the third generation owner) recommends. He’s been to the vineyards; he knows the winemakers and he will guide you to great selections. Seriously, designate a driver. This is a wine list worth digging into. Our dinner partner’s knowledge of wine far exceeds mine and even she was stumped as to what to order. We tried two of Bob’s suggestions, and spent the rest of the night talking about why each bottle was better than the other. We started with a cheese course that included outstanding Iowa-made cheddar and a buttermilk bleu from Sonoma. even ordered the steaks, but that didn’t stop us. The steaks are hand cut and dry-aged right there. I’ve had a lot of steaks in a lot of towns, but none that could hold a candle to Archie’s. I’m not exaggerating when I say these steaks rival any I’ve ever eaten, anywhere. And I hesitate to say this, but the steaks are cheap, which is good, because you’ll spend your money on the wine. Oh, that wine list! One thing stands out in the memories of each of these excursions; the time we spent with friends. The food ranged from pretty good to outstanding, but the company of our friends filled each night with memories that were better than anything on the menu. Sure, we could have gone to one of the great restaurants here in town (we often do), but we wouldn’t have spent as much time together. When we made the conscience decision to get out of town, we were committing to spending time in the car; talking, sharing and laughing and extending the event from an hour or two across the table, to an entire evening. Our trip to Archie’s lasted almost six hours and every minute was filled with laughter, stories and friendship. And wine, did I mention the wine list? Who’s up for a road trip? o, don’t worry; you’re not in the wrong section. This is a wine article, I promise, not a riveting documentary on melanin-rich fowl. Growing up in Florence, Italy, I had the privilege of sipping local wines at a young age. Luckily for me, the local wine of Florence is Chianti! It’s still one of my favorite wines to drink to this day, especially on a warm August night with some penne and homemade marinara sauce. When it comes to picking out a good bottle of Chianti, here’s the golden rule: pick one with the black rooster on it! I started doing a little more research on the origins of this peculiar symbol that appears on some of the best bottles that Tuscany has to offer.

The original Chianti was defined in 1716 by the Medici family and included the area around Gaiole, Greve, Radda and Castellina. The borders were extended and redrawn in 1932 to stretch to the north of Florence, south to Castelnuovo Berardenga, west to Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, and east to the Chianti Mountains. There are now 8 sub-zones: Classico, Colli Aretini, Colli Fiorentino, Colline Pisano, Colli Senesi, Montalbano, Montespertoli, and Rufina. But here is the interesting story that I am constantly in search of: the legend of the rooster! Gallo Nero which in Italian means black rooster, is the symbol for the region’s Chianti Classico producers association, and you will
find it on the necks of the bottles from this region. Its origins (keep in mind the story comes from an old man from Siena) began in the 12th century when Florence and its rival Siena were continually warring over the rich territories between the two cities. Legend has it that they would resolve this quarrel with a race involving two knights, one from each city. The rules were agreed upon...the two knights would start the race when the cock crows. The point where the knights meet would be the new border. This is where it gets interesting...allegedly the Florentines had a black rooster which they kept unfed for days, so by the morning of the race it crowed well before dawn. Thus, the Florentines
had an advantage because their knight left first and rode many miles deeper into rival territory, reaching Fonterutoli, a territory of Castellina. So the border was established in Castellina, close to Siena, in a place they named Croce Fiorentina. The only thing I like better than a good bottle of wine is a good story that goes with it! Next time you’re at your local wine store, be sure to peruse the Chianti section. Check the neck of the bottle for the infamous black rooster, a sure sign that you are getting an original Chianti. hat do heartburn, difficulty swallowing, constant throatclearing and even chest pain have in common? They are all symptoms of a digestive disorder known as GERD. GERD, also known as “acid reflux,” is a common ailment with a whole range of symptoms that may or may not include the classic pain and burning of heartburn. GERD – gastroesophageal reflux disease – is the medical term for what happens when stomach acid comes up into

the esophagus or even the throat, because one or both of the sphincters at either end of the esophagus isn’t working properly, said Dr. Cristina Hill Jensen, gastroenterologist with Avera Medical Group Gastroenterology. When the lower sphincter between the stomach and esophagus relaxes at the wrong time or too often, it usually causes the classic symptoms of frequent heartburn, nausea or indigestion. When the upper sphincter at the top of the
esophagus is also not working properly, stomach acid backs up into the throat or “voice box.” This causes symptoms like constant throat clearing, frequent coughing, a feeling that there’s a lump in your throat, or excessive mucous when eating. Another less common symptom of GERD is non-cardiac chest pain, which may make the patient feel like he or she is having a heart attack. If you have symptoms like this, you have plenty of company.

“Fifty percent of people, at some point in their lifetime, experience symptoms of reflux, and 10 to 15 percent of the population have significant reflux disease,” said Dr. Christopher Hurley, gastroenterologist with Avera Medical Group Gastroenterology. Fortunately, GERD is easily treated. The first thing your doctor may suggest is diet and lifestyle changes, Dr. Hill Jensen said. This includes eating smaller meals, not eating before bedtime, avoiding caffeine and other triggers of heartburn such as spicy foods, and not lying down immediately after eating. Antacids like Mylanta, Tums or Rolaids might be helpful for occasional heartburn. But if the symptoms keep coming back, the next line of defense is often an over-the-counter acid reducer. These medications fall into two categories, including H2 blockers – like Pepcid AC, Tagamet, and Zantac, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) – like Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid. “These medications can be safely used long term,” Dr. Hurley said. Some patients are concerned that PPIs may place them at higher risk for osteoporosis, but because the benefits of taking these medications outweigh the risks, Dr. Hurley said doctors usually recommend taking the medication, while supplementing with additional calcium and vitamin D. “Most patients get better on these medications, with few side effects,” Dr. Hill Jensen added. If GERD does not get better on medications, or if patients don’t want to take medications for the long term, surgery is an option. “Medications are not a cure for reflux – they simply reduce the acid. The actual problem is mechanical,” said Dr. Brad Thaemert, surgeon with Surgical Institute of South Dakota. This mechanical problem is fixed through a procedure known as Nissen fundoplication. The surgery is done minimallyinvasively, through laparoscopy or robotic surgery. “It can also be a “scarless” technique with all instruments inserted through a single incision in the navel,” Dr. Thaemert said. It’s important that patients with GERD don’t ignore their symptoms. Left untreated, GERD can cause inflammation and scarring in the esophagus, leading to difficulty swallowing. What’s more, untreated GERD can cause cells in the esophagus to change. This condition is known as Barrett’s esophagus, and people who have it are at higher risk for developing esophageal cancer – a life-threatening disease. If you have had symptoms of GERD for some time, your doctor may recommend an upper endoscopy to rule out Barrett’s or any other serious condition. Warning signs that require a doctor’s attention include weight loss, symptoms which are not responsive to medications, vomiting, severe chest pain, or a sensation of food getting stuck in the chest region. t’s the time to get ready for school again, and one thing that is always needed is a notebook. In honor of the notebook, here are some cute and fun ways to use them in crafts with your kids. From creative notebook covers to actually wearing a notebook paper T-shirt, who knew notebooks could be so much fun?
Materials Needed: Spiral-bound notebook, extra wide fuzzy pipe cleaners in a variety of colors, tacky glue, and colored paper. Instructions: Glue the pipe cleaners in the order of colors you desire onto the cover of the notebook. Fold the ends of the pipe cleaners against the top and bottom edges of the inside cover, then glue a sheet of colored paper on the inside to conceal the ends. You now have a soft and colorful notebook that will be more fun to use than a plain one.

Food Box Notebook Cover Materials Needed: Spiral-bound notebook, some colorful food boxes, ruler, mini-hole punch, jewelry pliers, and scissors. Instructions: Cut your box of choice down to size using a notebook page as a template. Carefully remove the wire from the notebook. Mark the holes on the back of the cut box cover and use a mini hole punch to punch them out. Make sure that this hole punch makes mini holes, not regular sized holes. Line up the holes while holding the notebook together, and replace the wire coil. Bend the ends of the wire back into place to secure. Use a decorative punch on the corners of the box notebook cover to give it an extra special finished look.

Notebook Paper Dry Erase Board Materials Needed: Cut frame to match the size of the paper, notebook paper, dry erase markers, and extra decor for the frame. Instructions: Place the notebook paper inside your frame. Decorate the corner of the frame with any sort of fabric or scrapbook decoration you desire. Use dry erase markers to leave your messages and to make your lists for your back to school needs! This also makes a very cute gift for teachers.
College Ruled T-Shirts Materials Needed: White T-shirt, black paint pen, blue and red fabric paint, paint brush, wide masking tape, and poster board. Instructions: Put the poster board inside the shirt to make sure the paint doesn’t leak to the back. Take the masking tape and tape off the shirt where you want the blue lines to be. Remember, this is supposed to look like notebook paper, so be pretty precise on your spacing. Feel free to let the tape go over the edges of the shirt and stick to the surface below to ensure it stays in place when you paint. Using the blue paint, paint between the paint and let dry. Remove the tape once it is dry, and put two pieces of tape down vertically, leaving a space where you want the red line to go. Paint red between the tape and let dry. Using a black paint pen, have your child help you write their name on the top line, as if it were a piece of paper. When everything is dry, remove the tape from the red line and the poster board from inside the shirt, and you have a college ruled T-shirt that will be sure to turn heads!

his personality. “Kids rooms are so fun to do because you can just get crazy with it — no limits,” says Cindy. “I have such a fun time doing it! I love decorating, but kids rooms are my favorite thing to do because you can let your imagination go wild!” The whimsical room is quaint in terms of size, but very big and bold with its colors and décor. The entire room is painted with vivid red and bluish hues, and features numerous personalized accents. From the hand-painted walls and furniture to the homemade bulletin board, each detail embraces Ayden’s love of things that fly and Cindy’s love of DIY-projects. “I purchased some inexpensive crates and painted them white for all his books. I really had fun with his dresser and used chalkboard paint for the fronts of them so he could write what was in each drawer to stay organized,” she says. “I also did that on the front of his toy chest. I made his bulletin board, so he could pin up his

artwork. I bought his dressers at Kmart. I didn’t want to spend a lot since I knew I wanted to paint the front of them. I also changed the knobs out to make them more interesting.” A customized and hand-painted map on the wall adds worldly character. “I knew that I wanted to do vintage airplanes, so I started looking on the Internet for ideas on different airplanes. I saw a nautical map and thought it would be awesome to do one entire wall a map with an island just for Ayden,” says Cindy. “The wall map is Ayden’s favorite part of the room. It glows in the dark and serves as a nightlight when he goes to bed.” Ayden’s room is proof that his mother, Cindy, is an incubator of new and innovative ideas, and she’s also very good at implementing those ideas into nearly unimaginable realities. However, perhaps the most significant element of the endless redesigns and remodels of Ayden’s room is that it’s a true collaboration and labor of love between mother and son. There is no other way the love between them could be more keenly felt than after you step into Ayden’s room. It’s evident in every personalized detail. The focus was and always has been on Ayden and his interests. Lastly, the room also demonstrates that together as a team, the sky is the limit.

Working Out For Two: How to Exercise Safely Through Pregnancy

hen Jamie Conroy was preparing for the birth of her first baby she made sure to prepare herself physically. As a certified personal trainer, she taught a class on exercising in pregnancy at Sanford Wellness Center. “Working Out for Two” was both her job and her personal goal. “I knew I’d need the endurance and the energy, both before and after my baby was born,” says Conroy, as her 10-day-old son Carter naps nearby. “For all the sleep I’m not getting, I seem to have plenty of energy.”

A Healthy Habit Exercise is an essential part of a healthy pregnancy, says Sanford Health obstetrician Kristin Hermanson, MD. For most women with low risk pregnancies, exercising a minimum of 30 minutes a day during pregnancy has incredible health benefits for both the new mother and her growing baby. “There are so many reasons we recommend this,” Dr. Hermanson said. “Exercise helps women get in shape and prepared for a vaginal delivery; they’re ready for labor. Labor is hard work.”
Women who exercise during pregnancy have fewer problems with excessive weight gain in either themselves or their baby. They are better able to handle the physical challenges of carrying a baby and bounce back physically faster after the baby is born, Dr. Hermanson says. Some expectant moms with “high-risk” pregnancies or complicating conditions might have some restrictions on exercise, the doctor says. Women in danger of pre-term labor, with a growth-restricted baby or low amniotic fluid levels might be advised to watch their activity levels, she says. Women

In general, a pregnant woman’s exercise level is dependant on her level of fitness prior to pregnancy. Unless an activity puts a woman at risk to fall or strike her abdomen, she should be able to do it while pregnant with a few modifications, Dr. Hermanson says. “If you’re a runner before you’re pregnant, you can probably continue to run,” Dr. Hermanson says. “If you’ve never run before, it’s not a good time to start running, but you can still try to stay physically fit.” Even a woman who has never exercised before should be able to take up walking or swimming, doing some light weight lifting or riding a stationary bike, she says. “It’s never to late to get started,” the doctor says.

Whatever activity she chooses, she should make sure that she doesn’t lay on her back after the first trimester of pregnancy because it is harder to get good blood flow to the baby. She should also make sure that she isn’t pushing her heart rate too high. “Rather than worry about your heart rate, it’s better to make sure that you’re able to talk comfortably,” the doctor said. “If you’re gasping for air while you’re exercising, you’re working too hard.”

Since Conroy was already in good shape prior to her pregnancy, she tried to maintain most of her usual exercises, adjusting her activity to accommodate her changing shape and growing baby. She ran, worked out on an elliptical machine and did strength training. She learned to adjust her routine, modifying exercises that gave her pains in her calves and lower back. “I noticed that at times I didn’t have the endurance I used to have, but you learn what you can do,” she says. “Generally I found that it gave me energy. I felt good almost all the time.” Conroy said it was fun to bring her newborn son back to meet her students in the “Working Out For Two” class. After her pregnancy and delivery, she can tell the women she helps with experience that the exercise makes life better for both baby and mother. “I want to motivate pregnant women to be exercising,” Conroy said. “I can attest to the benefits. We new moms need all the energy we can get.”

hildhood is filled with many special memories and milestones, but there are probably few that are met with as many mixed emotions as going back to school each fall. The excitement of reuniting with classmates not seen all summer goes toe-to-toe with the gutwrenching nervousness of classroom assignments. School supplies are meticulously selected. The outfit for the first day of school is carefully chosen. And as the last days of summer vacation slip away, children make their way back into the familiar routine of the school year. One of the most stressful parts—and arguably one of the most important parts—of each new school year is the teacher assignment. The anxiety children experience about the unknown raises feelings of fear and doubt. Will I like my teacher? Will my teacher like me? For students lucky enough to land in Kelly Grosdidier’s fourth grade classroom at John F. Kennedy Elementary, however, they have nothing to worry about. Harris Teacher of the Year award in the Sioux Falls School District. According to the parent who nominated her, Mrs. Grosdidier goes beyond teaching what’s in the curriculum. She teaches her students life lessons. We met up with Mrs. Grosdidier during her summer vacation to find out what it is that drives her to approach each new school year with excitement as fresh as newly sharpened pencils. How did you end up choosing a profession in teaching? When I was young, I was always inspired by my teachers. They were always very good to me. No matter what kind of day I had at home, they always made me feel special and I liked the way they could teach me new things or help me with something that I was struggling with. I think I always knew I wanted to be an elementary teacher. Who was your favorite teacher when you were in elementary school? And what about his/her teaching style do you try to emulate in your classroom? I could still name every teacher that I had in elementary school. I didn’t have any bad experiences. There’s probably a little bit of something that I took from every teacher, but the most important thing for me — and it probably came from every teacher I had — was that they cared about me as a whole child, not just about me as a student. They wanted to know how my day was at home or how the softball game went. There was such a personal connection. One thing I talk about in my classroom that they also talked a lot about is life skills and choices and pressures you will have when you’re not in the classroom and how to handle that.
Last spring, you were selected as one of the finalists for the Dr. John W. Harris Teacher of the Year award. That’s pretty exciting. Please tell us about that. It was very exciting. It was very humbling. It was an honor to be recognized because I was nominated by the parents of my classroom. It was an honor to know that the message was getting through — that I really, truly care about their children. At the same time, it was hard to accept knowing that I’m doing the same thing that so many other teachers are doing, and I just happened to have parents who would go out of their way to nominate me. There are so many coworkers and past co-workers who I think do a better job than I do. People typically aren’t in this profession for the accolades or the pay, though. What is the best part about being a teacher? Every single day you are making a difference to someone. Every day someone is counting on seeing you or telling you what they did last night. Throughout the school day, it’s those “light bulb” moments when you can tell they really understand. I also enjoy being out and about in the summer and having a student jump out of a car in a parking lot and run across yelling, “Mrs. Grosdidier!” I don’t know; I just don’t think I would have that same satisfaction in any other job. So—one mom to another—how do you deal with other people’s children all day and still have energy and creativity left for your own kids when you get home? different level. It’s different at home; they have different needs and different wants. If anything, I think it helps because my kids are at the same school so they see the way that these other kids look up to me — that I’m cool. (laughs) But I did worry about that. It’s kind of like when you’re pregnant and you worry about how you’re possibly going to love the second child when you already love your first child so much. Your heart just grows. It just makes room for more. What is the one “teacher secret” you wish parents knew? You know, like, “We don’t all want an apple on the first day of school.” Is there some big teacher secret you wish you could tell the parents of the world? I’d like them to know that we are there for their children and we’re doing the very best that we can. Prior to the first phone call you might get about a negative behavior, that teacher has probably researched and tried everything they possibly could to help with that behavior before they are actually coming forward to you. Teachers are known for having rules. What is one rule that you just will not tolerate being broken in your classroom? Bullying. It is so important to me that all the other students understand that nobody is any better than the other. It is very important to me that — by the end of the first six weeks — they see each other as equals. And we talk about how maybe one student does have the best penmanship in the classroom but another student is the best basketball player in the classroom. We’ve all been given

talents, and we need to not be jealous but recognize other talents and be thankful for the talent that we have. And we talk about how we can share those talents with others. Back to school is right around the corner. How do you prepare yourself to go back to school each fall? Well, I’m personally kind of a nerd. I think this stems from just finishing my master’s not that long ago and wanting to continually grow and learn, but I’ve been taking some training throughout the summer and then I also did some research on best practices on things I want to tweak in my classroom. Next week, a couple of colleagues and I are headed out to Spearfish for a training called SD Math Counts. So as I’m reading and learning this stuff, I’m getting excited to implement it in my classroom. So, what are you most looking forward to when you go back to school this year? I’m just very excited to meet the new group of students. And my kiddos who just left [fourth grade] are going into fifth grade, so I’ll still get to see them. Everyone’s excited at back to school time. There’s that little magic in the air — kids are going through the halls and going back to see their old teachers — it’s nice. It’s like a fresh start every year. This article is dedicated to my former teachers, especially my English teachers who taught me the importance of being able to write good — um, I mean — write well.

he sale ads for “Back to School� items can send shivers down the spine of some children and cause others to smile. These ads also have an effect on our four-legged friends as well. Pets love routine. Feeding time is almost a religious event with my cat Momo. Piper reminds us about bedtime every night and Millie seems to know when the kids are supposed to be home. Lots of people have told me that their pets know when the school bus comes every day. Daily events like the evening walk, treat time and when to go to sleep are important to your pet. When life makes changes, they have to adapt. There are times when our pets do not want to alter their daily events. Sometimes it can become stressful for them. Dogs and cats react to stressful events in a variety of ways. They cannot leave home in most cases, so they are held captive to deal with what humans dole out to them. Behavioral changes are the most frequent way for pets to show stress. These changes can be subtle, or quite obvious. In dogs, nervous energy is the most common sign of emotional stress. Millie is more restless and vocal. She will pace, bark at every little thing and go to the window often to look out. I do not know if she feels threatened or anxious. Dogs are pack animals and do not like anyone to leave their group. People will respond to stress by chewing their fingernails, fidgeting or becoming agitated. Some pets will decide to lick their legs, especially the front legs. They will lick them obsessively to the point where they get sores on their skin. Veterinarians call them lick granulomas. They are raised, ulcerated areas of skin with an irregular in shape. They are symptom of stress, not an infection. I see them commonly after kids go back to school, during owner divorces or even after the owners have a shift change at work.

The change in schedule or routine is difficult for some pets to handle. The treatment for them involves antibiotics for secondary infections, topical meds for inflammation and more importantly life changes that keep them tired and busy. Always consult with your Veterinarian before these issues become too significant. Destructive chewing is a more obvious and alarming sign of stress for some pet owners. Some pets will suddenly decide to eat your shoes, woodwork or even the sofa when they are stressed. Good pets may suddenly decide that eating your underwear is a good way for them to stay close to you! There are medications to help reduce the stress and they will help. However, exercise and stimulation is the most important part of getting your pet back to normal. Cats also can be stressed by changes in their life. Obsessive grooming is common in distressed felines. They will chew or lick off the hair of their stomach or back when stressed. It is important to have them checked for other medical conditions before the diagnosis is made for over grooming. More stressful situations for humans arise when cats decide to display their anxiety by not using their litter box. Urinating or pooping in the house is more common than we would like. This behavior is the strongest way for felines to show their unhappiness. It is a difficult problem to cure and may take months to correct. When life changes, remember that your pets may not like it. Help them cope with changing circumstances by increasing their exercise or play time, brushing them, or presenting them with a new toy. If your pet needs more help, call your Veterinarian who can assist with a behavioral consultation and make sure there is not a different underlying cause. Volcanic Ashfall
A
bout 610,000 years ago, volcanic activity in the Yellowstone National Park area produced a cataclysmic eruption 1000 times larger than the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980. At the blast site a huge depression (caldera) was created covering about 1500 square miles. Ground-hugging flows of hot volcanic ash, pumice, and gases swept across the western United States. The eruption shot a towering column of volcanic ash and gases high into the air. Downwind from the volcano, fine ashfall blanketed a large part of North America. More than three feet of ashfall accumulated across Minnehaha County. The eruption occurred during an interglacial state, and subsequent ice flows buried or removed the ash. One time, erosion revealed an outcrop of ash near here in a cutbank on the east side of Skunk Creek. Locally called Hartford Ash, the site is used as a marker to distinguish three distinct stages of glaciation. The drift from two older glaciers has been identified below the Hartford Ash Bed, while the drift from a third and more recent glacier is above it. Violent Volcano Eruption The last of three super eruptions occurred in the present-day Yellowstone National Park 610,000 years ago. This massive eruption rapidly released magma from its chamber, and the overlying land collapsed into the now-empty chamber and created a caldera, a geographic depression 34-miles across, 45 miles long, and several thousand feet deep. Extent of Ashfall At the time of the eruption, towering dust clouds blackened the sky. Volcanic debris spread out rapidly and covered thousands of square miles in minutes. Nearly 1000 miles away, the accumulation of ashfall in Minnehaha County exceeded three-feet in depth.
