here’s something new in the neighborhood of 26th Street and Western Avenue. Grille 26, the newest addition to the Minervas Restaurant family, has taken up residence in the space formerly occupied by Spezia. With its name chosen to reflect casual comfort and a relaxed atmosphere, this new neighborhood grille and bar espouses a culinary philosophy of fresh and flavorful, with an emphasis on fresh and homemade.
In keeping with its neighborhood theme, on display on the walls of what’s becoming known as “The Grille, are old photos of the Sioux Falls area and familiar landmarks. The photos feature such places as the Piggly Wiggly store, a mobile station, and Sioux Falls College (as USF was then known) to name a few. Many of the photos are from the Center for Western Studies, The Old Courthouse Museum, USF/SFC, and several

The new dÊcor includes suspended tiles serving to improve acoustics to allow a comfortable conversational noise level; but also are aesthetic in their design. The new windows are larger and allow for more natural light, and great views of the Spellerberg sledding hill, and the daily life and traffic of the neighborhood street. Options for seating areas include the main dining room’s tables and booths, and a special one-half moon booth table which seats up to 6. The bar features both high and low tables. Electronic pagers allow waiting diners to stroll the shops and area within two hundred yards.
The Grille 26 chefs put a lot of thought into all of the ingredients, ensuring that everything has more of a creative culinary spin to it than ordinary faire. Truly a spectacular menu which includes selections such as brunch specialties, sandwiches, soups, burgers, salads, pastas, flame roasted pizzas, entrees such as kabobs, steaks, and seafood, and small features, bakery biscuits, muffins, and cafÊ roll desserts made from scratch. hen Janice Burke moved into her townhome four years ago, she felt at home right away. An acquaintance had been its previous owner, and when she decided to relocate, this friend suggested the quaint character of the townhome’s design as fitting for Burke.
This place is perfect, as the upkeep is minimal, and Burke feels it’s easy to live there and rely on the accessibility of nearby BNFOJUJFTPG-PVJTF"WFOVF5IFMPDBUJPOBU3BMQI3PHFST Road also offers a skyline view of Sioux Falls at night, and Burke overlooks it from the loft on the upper level of her residence.

consist of multiple families and usually multiple floors. The traditional “townhouse” apartment is a two bedroom unit with the living room in the front on the lower level, kitchen in the back. Two bedrooms are on the front and back of the upper level
with a single bathroom between. The layout of this townhome provides for comfortable entertaining with two bathrooms upstairs and one downstairs. The upper level does contain two bedrooms, and the stairway
opens in the spacious living room. Burke found a replacement stone fireplace to provide contrast to the white walls, and she added several black elements and crystal to the decorating. There are also plants, trees and other greenery added in her

are captured through displayed artwork and books. These books capture some of their past travels, and world history is of special interest to Janice. “I feel lucky to have traveled to these places because they have more meaning through experiencing their location first-hand,” she shares. Burke was wise in her decision to simplify as she moved in, only keeping her favorite pieces and not trying to incorporate more than the space could hold. The end result is rooms that she enjoys free of clutter. The combination of neutrals and darker tones continues in the kitchen and master bedroom. Burke felt the townhome was so open that she needed to have the light color choices for her walls and decorative items set against solid furniture pieces. In the kitchen, the cabinetry is simple and Burke opted to have the counter surfaces redone in black. The appliances were in place, and Burke did decide to add a pantry cabinet. Everything is easily accessible and organized.

Outside, the upkeep is again simple. The unit is part brick and part siding, and the neutral coloring gives a longevity to its appeal. In each bathroom, there are silver framed mirrors that are favorites of Burke’s. She added a unique look on a side wall, selecting a full-length mirror also framed in silver. It’s topped with a soldered iridescent art piece that hangs over the mirror. This was something her daughter had owned, and as she’s inherited it, Burke has had to fix it twice. It almost looks like a beautiful wind chime, but it’s a delicate work of art that Burke remembers her daughter also cherishing. The beauty Janice Burke has created is something that brings her solace from the storms and peace amidst a hectic day. It only takes a small stretch of the imagination and one of her favorite books, perhaps reading relaxed in the loft, to explore new places or past trips. Her home is the picture of a full life – with treasures close to her heart.

y wife was quick to remind me that I should write a Mother’s Day article this month. I said, “But I really want to write about wines from Argentina. With a glare that only a loving wife (and mother) can produce, she quipped, “I am the mother of your three boys. And with that, I am reminded of why I love my wife so much. A mother is a beautiful thing. And a determined mom is inspiring. Every year for the past five years, I have given my wife a gift that “keeps on giving for Mother’s Day. Since our third son was born, I have had all three boys give their mom a piece of ceramic. Let’s see, the first one was a cookie jar, then there was a serving platter, then a water pitcher, then some coffee mugs, and last year they made a huge serving plate that read, “Best Mom Ever. What makes these gifts precious,

however, is not their functionality, or even their aesthetics, it’s that every year, for the past five years, they have placed their tiny handprints on these pieces of art. And with each year, we watch their hands, and their love, grow. To see their two hands mature over the years almost brings a tear to my eye. There’s another set of hands that doesn’t necessarily bring a tear to my eye, but certainly bring a joy to my palate, and these are the Two Hands wines from Australia. Read on to find out about these special wines from very special winemakers. The creation of Two Hands Wines started as the vision of two longtime friends or “two hands”. Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz. Both gained familiarity with wine and success in the industry in earlier pursuits. But, their passion for Australian wine, especially Shiraz, led to their founding of Two Hands Wines in Australia’s Barossa Valley in 1999. A mere 17 tons of fruit in the inaugural 2000 harvest was unquestionably a humble beginning. It’s certainly not an event that would herald the kind of praise Two Hands now receives in the wine community. It wasn’t long before the winery’s many Shiraz offerings began to attract 90+ scores in the most influential and prestigious wine press. In 2004, Robert Parker named Two Hands “The finest negociant operation south of the equator.” Then, in 2005, fifteen of its wines received 90+ ratings from Parker’s Wine Advocate. Only six years passed before Two Hands became a critically acclaimed luxury wine producer. What makes these wines even more special is how they name an entire series of wines they produce after their children: Max, Harry, Edward, Sophie, Samantha, Lily, and Bella. Known as the “Garden” series, they are all Shiraz

wines but all come from different sub regions in Southern Australia. Each has its own unique characteristics from the subtle differences in their microclimates. Lily’s Garden is an amazing Shiraz from McLaren Vale. This inky wine has an intense nose of blueberry, blackberry, and plum with subtle mocha and spice notes. On the palate, this wine has a firm structure with tight but fine dry tannins married with a dense fruit mid-palate. This is everything Shiraz should be and more. Of course, with a high quality growing region coupled with high quality winemaking methods (then add the high ratings from critics worldwide,) you have the makings of a high priced wine.
