A Message from our Principal

St Vincent’s seeks to provide a quality Catholic learning environment reflecting the Mercy Qualities so that its students are faith-filled and prepared to make a difference. We aspire to be a community, which truly reflects the vision of God’s love for all.

We value family and community engagement as we grow and nurture a connected community. Proud and True is the St Vincent’s Business Directory and it’s a great initiative. Proud & True allows our families and our community access to key information to support the school year and a variety of businesses within the St Vincent’s school community.

The businesses advertising in Proud & True are either families in the school or they are businesses who have a strong connection to St Vincent’s. Our intention is that all families are able to confidently use these businesses, trusting that they will be cared for and looked after.

My sincere thank you to all the St Vincent’s families and businesses who have advertised in our very own publication. I would like to acknowledge the professionalism, the efficiency and the creativity of Ben Ryan and the ADV Collab Team, who have delivered the Proud & True Business Directory.

Kind regards,

St Vincent’s Primary School

Our History

St Vincent’s Primary School has seen enormous growth since its establishment in Surfers Paradise in 1948. From its humble beginnings as a single storey building with an enrolment of 30 students it is now the second largest Catholic School in the Archdiocese of Brisbane. Many dedicated and passionate people have contributed to the development of our vibrant and flourishing community.

In 1946, Fr Neal Shannon was appointed the first Parish Priest of the newly formed Surfers Paradise Parish. The small wooden church, opened in 1948, where the Watermark Hotel now stands. It held 60 parishioners and provided classrooms for a much needed parish school. Today, Sacred Heart Church seats approximately 1000 parishioners. The Sisters of Mercy were appointed to administer and service the educational and spiritual needs of the children of the parish and Sr. Mary Flora was appointed as the first Principal. The church continued to be used as a school and as enrolments increased to 150, a second storey was built in 1954. An extensive building program was initiated shortly after to satisfy an ever growing school population. A new parish church was built in 1963.

In 1970, another six classrooms were built, followed by two more at a later stage. During this period six Mercy Sisters were appointed as Principals, with Sister St Anthony being the last. The first lay Principal, Mr Brian Dunlea was appointed in 1975.

In 1986 Sacred Heart Parish Church and St Vincent’s Primary School were established in Clear Island Waters after Dr Owen Oxenham, the parish priest, initiated the move from Surfers Paradise. A beautiful new school, located in very pleasant surroundings beside a lake, was opened in June with 200 students, and 20 staff. Mr Jim O’Brien was Principal. The involvement of the Mercy Sisters concluded in 1992 with the departure of Sr. Agnes Kearney. However, St Vincent's School proudly continues to honour its founders, the Mercy Sisters and our patron St Vincent de Paul.

The school’s growth continued under the leadership of Principals, Mr Paul Allen, Mr Greg Myers, Mrs Kerry Rowlands and Mr David Sewell and today has over 800 students. Our welcoming Catholic community works together to ensure the joy of shared stories and vibrant memories for all.

St Vincent’s School Song

Adapted from original lyrics by Peter Bartlett

We were founded in Surfers Paradise A one room school in a city of lights. And over the years we’ve developed with the coast To Fairways today we are the most.

We are St Vincent’s proud and true, We’ll stick together in everything we do. Jesus is in us, you and me, Misericordia – Mercy.

We’ve MacKillop and McAuley, Shannon, Vincent too. Our colours are red, green, yellow and blue. It’s sport every Friday, we always try our best, The other teams put us to the test.

Our cultural program is to teach, Music and dancing, drama and speech. Our Robotics team is hard to beat, And Italian language we learn to speak.

We’ve community spirit at our school, Our friends and teachers are all so cool. Every day we learn and play, It makes me happy so I say.

St Vincent’s School Prayer

Loving God, We the community of St Vincent’s ask you to guide us on our journey. Help us to make positive choices by valuing the Mercy Qualities at our school and in our lives. We celebrate the diversity of our community and the opportunities we are given. Through your love, unite our hearts, hands and voices as we grow, learn and celebrate life together. Amen

The Family and Community Engagement Network, otherwise known as the FACE Network is an integral part of St Vincent’s Primary School. It is a group of St Vincent’s parents, caregivers and staff that meets once a Term who are committed to building strong partnerships that foster engagement and result in shared understandings of students, their learning and their school. At St Vincent’s we have reinvigorated parent connections and our FACE Network is our key driver for this. The FACE Network is a flexible and agile group of positive and productive school stakeholders, who look to add value to the culture of our great school, whilst supporting parents to engage in their children’s learning.

The FACE Network involves allocation of resources – people and investment, to implement engagement activities, creation of support networks to help us to share best practice, ongoing professional learning and the opportunity for families to build their capacity to support children’s learning at home.

Please feel warmly welcomed to come and be part of the St Vincent’s FACE Network.

We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

Positive Behaviour 4 Learning

St Vincent’s is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) School. PB4L is about people, practices, and processes – it is not a program, but the way that we interact & operate here at St Vincent’s - The Mercy Way

St Vincent’s promotes behaviours that align with our Mercy Qualities in order to:

• Improve the social behavioural climate.

• Support or enhance the impact of academic achievement.

• Increase proactive, positive, preventive management while decreasing reactive management.

• Integrating academic and behaviour supports.

• Improving services for all students, including students at risk and students with identified disabilities.

An important component of PB4L is a continuum of behavioural supports that, like academic instruction, acknowledges that students will need differing levels of behavioural interventions and support to be successful at school.

Hi, my name is Jo. As a special education teacher working with children with autism, emotional disturbance, and other special needs, I came to appreciate how valuable children and their parents found practical and emotional support beyond the limits of a classroom setting. I became a qualified counsellor, registered with the ACA, to broaden my capacity to help children and their parents in a counselling setting.

I am especially passionate about supporting effective parenting, working with children and teens, and working with practical and emotional challenges presented by neurodiversity and other special needs. I also find it incredibly rewarding to assist children and adults with anxiety and depression, or who have concerns with self-esteem, emotion regulation or grief and loss. My approach is person centered, based on empathy, honesty, and non-judgment, using elements from Cognitive Behavioral, Solution Focused, Acceptance and Commitment, Expressive and Mindfulness therapies to help clients understand themselves better and use their inner resources to develop skills and strategies to make positive changes towards a more rewarding life.
