The City That Says YES As one of Australia’s fastest-growing cities we face a range of challenges – and opportunities – over coming years.

I

mproving public transport, expanding the economy, protecting our green and open space and supporting the city’s 80,700 registered small businesses are all key priorities of the City.

Over the past 70 years, the narrative about the Gold Coast has changed. Historically, we were known as a great family holiday destination as well as a place for people to retire. We were also known as a construction hot spot with high rise developments changing our coastal skyline.

Today, we are much more than just a fantastic holiday destination. Our city storybook is now about world-leading technology, digital innovation, film making, high growth industries, major events, sport, tourism and construction.

That is the modern Gold Coast story and since 2012 when I was first elected, the Gold Coast has changed significantly. Our economy has grown from $30 billion to more than $50 billion. Our population has grown from 490,000 to more than 700,000 and is heading towards one million people by the mid-2040s.

The visitor economy is now worth $8.9 billion and our exports have grown significantly with manufacturing now representing 28 percent of our annual exports. Across the city, 75 cranes are on the skyline and our city-shaping project pipeline is valued at $6 billion.
