This is the road to peaceful relaxation, quaint villages waiting to be explored, outdoor adventures, rich history, festivals and events, and culinary delights.

Information for drivers

Northumberland Ferries Ltd.

Speed limits and distances are in Metric (1 km = 0.62 miles). Unless otherwise posted, the speed limit within urban and residential areas is 50 km/h (31 mph); on the highway, it is 100 km/h (60 mph). Unless otherwise posted, it is legal to turn right on a red light after making a full stop. The use of seat belts and daytime running lights is compulsory. Driving under the influence of alcohol is against the law. Nova Scotian law prohibits using a mobile phone while operating a motor vehicle, unless with a hands-free device. It’s illegal to smoke in vehicles carrying children or youths under 19. Child safety seats are required for children under 18 kg (40 lbs) while booster seats are required for children under age nine or less than 4’9” in height. The use of helmets is mandatory for anyone riding a bicycle or motorcycle. Refer to gov.ns.ca/tran for more information.

During the summertime crossings you can experience local music, entertainment, food, wine, and beer samples. During peak travel season please arrive at the ferry terminal at least 45 minutes prior to the crossing you would like to take. You do not pay while going to Prince Edward Island, only when you leave the Island (either by Ferry or Confederation Bridge). Reservations can only be made on a return crossing from Prince Edward Island. Sit back and relax for 75 minutes while they do the driving.

A great way to plan accordingly for weather, road work, and accidents. You can also find out about the smaller ferry services in the province and view local highway webcams.

Did you know Oxford is the wild blueberry capital of Canada? The region celebrates the wild blueberry harvest with an annual festival August 17 to September 1. Maple springs to mind during March and April, inspiring many meals along the shore. Sugar Moon Farm in Earltown quenches the craving year-round with an all-day maple brunch, sugar camp tours, and maple-themed chef nights. A true foodie will not want to miss  Mrs. MacGregor’s shortbreads in Pictou. It was named the best shortbread in Canada by Canadian Living magazine. Be sure to stop in and take a bag home with you; it surely won’t last the trip (mrsmacgregors.com). To go with this sweet treat, enjoy a tasting of microroasted coffees and browse the selection of Ceilidh coffees, brewing gear, and unique products for coffee lovers. Mark Gabrieau and his culinary team create decadent creations at Gabrieau’s Bistro with the perfect marriage of wine and food (gabrieaus.com). The Brownstone outside patio is a perfect place to relax and unwind while you take in the sights in downtown Antigonish. A popular destination, the Townhouse Brewpub & Eatery, is known for its lively atmosphere and Nova Scotian craft beer made onsite. A trip to Pictou County would not be complete without trying pizza! There are many to choose from. Locals all have a favourite; we suggest you try Acropole in downtown New Glasgow or Westville, or Pictou County Pizza on Abercrombie Road. Pictou Lodge Beach Resort will please any palate with one of their scrumptious creations (pictoulodge.com). For local flair, stop into the Pugwash Farmers Market (pugwashfarmersmarket. com), the Tatamagouche Farmers Market (tatamagouchefarmersmarket.ca) Antigonish Farmers Market (antigonishfarmersmarket.ca) or visit the year-round New Glasgow Farmers Market (ngfarmmarket.com), but be sure to get there early! Make sure to visit Knoydart Farms, a certified organic dairy farm, specializing in Gloucester and Caerphilly cheeses in a variety of flavours. You can find them at the markets in Tatamagouche, New Glasgow, and Antigonish.

If you’re planning a barbecue visit Ebbett’s Meadow Brook Farm Market for all of your local meat (ebbettsmeadowbrook.com). If it’s chocolate you’re craving, why not try three of our very own chocolatiers’ goodies: Chapel Cove Chocolates, Peace by Chocolate, and Appleton Chocolates. Find a fresh catch from a nearby lobster pound or visit North Nova Seafoods at the Pictou Visitor Information Centre at the Rotary. Discover how local restaurants serve it up in style, or send some home for when you return. A trip to Uncle Leo’s Brewery in Lyons Brook (uncleleosbrewery.ca) or Tatamagouche Brewing Company (tatabrew.com) should be on your list for a real craft-brew experience. At Nova Scotia Spirit Company staff, believe everyone deserves to pour premium quality spirits in their glass. Their award-winning Fishermen’s Helper White Rum, Blue Lobster Vodka, Willing To Learn Gin are sure to lift your spirits (nsspiritcompany.com).

If you are looking for a culinary adventure, try the Kilted Chef’s culinary journey from the pasture, to the sea, to your plate (kiltedchef.ca).

Kilted Chef’s Nova Scotia Mussel Chowder

Serves 4 to 6 2 tbsp. butter 1 lb. yellow flesh potatoes, skin on, diced 2 Shallots diced ½ cup celery diced 2 tbsp. fresh basil, chopped 2 bay leaves 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard 1 lb. mussel meat ½ cup dry white wine 8 cups mussel broth 1 cup 35% cream Sea salt and pepper to taste Cook half of the potatoes and half of the shallots in four cups of the mussel broth until tender, purée, and set aside.

In a large pot, sauté the bacon, remaining shallots, and the celery in the butter until transparent, then deglaze with the white wine and Dijon mustard. When the wine has reduced, add the rest of the potatoes, the herbs, and the rest of the mussel broth. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to a gentle simmer until the potatoes are just fork tender. When potatoes are cooked, add the mussel meat, the pureed potato and cook for a further five minutes. Season with salt and pepper, stir in the cream and allow to heat through. Adjust the seasoning to taste.

Pictou Lodge Biscuits and Molasses Butter Biscuits 4 cups flour ¼ cup sugar 1 tbsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt ½ cup butter 1 cup buttermilk 1 egg Mix dry ingredients. Crumble in butter, mix until combined (don’t over mix). Brush tops with egg wash. Bake at 375 for 15 minutes.

Molasses Butter 1lb room temperature butter 1/2 cup molasses. Whip softened butter and molasses together until well blended.

Gabrieau’s Bistro Pistachio Crusted Salmon with Nasturtium Butter

Nasturtium Butter 1 tsp fresh minced garlic zest of one orange, lemon and, lime 1 oz juice from the orange, lemon and, lime (mixed) 1 tsp black pepper 1 cup nasturtium flowers/leaves chopped, packed ½ lb butter 1 tbsp chopped dill, basil, or parsley (optional)

Mix all ingredients in food processor, except the butter and puree, until all combined. Then add butter and pulse again. Take a piece of boneless salmon, dip one side in eggwash and then dredge in the crust mixture and pat the mixture on firmly. Sear in pan with oil on medium to high heat, crust side down, for about two to three minutes, until lightly browned, then flip over and cook bottom side another two to three minutes. Finish in the oven with two teaspoons of nasturtium butter spread on top, about two minutes at 400. Take out and serve.

Pistachio Crust 1 cup shelled nuts chopped 1 cup panko ½ cup parmesan cheese salt and pepper to taste egg wash 1oz olive oil for frying Mix nuts, panko, Parmesan cheese, salt, and, pepper in a food processor and pulse til the consistency of graham crumbs. Set aside.

This interpretive hike around Laytons Lake consists of gently sloping hills that venture in and out of the forest to open fields. Picnicking, bird, and wildlife watching. Amherst Shore Provincial Park Trail (4 km) Highway 336. This 4-km round-trip hike loops through forest to the Amherst Shore and a lovely red sand beach.

Wentworth Hostel Trails (various km) The hostel maintains a large network of trails for skiing, mountain biking, and hiking.

Henry G. Ketchum Recreation Trail (4 km) Running between the Tidnish Bridge and Tidnish Dock Provincial Park, this trail follows the route of the historic Chignecto Ship Railway, crosses two bridges, and offers great views of the river. Tidnish Dock Provincial Park (500 m) Beecham Road, off Route 366. A boardwalk leads to a grassy pathway through old-growth forest toward the water. Wallace and Area Museum Trails (4 km) Several short walking trails plus a 3-km wilderness trail all feature interpretive panels, sections of oldgrowth forest, and a wide variety of plants and animals. Lismore Culloden Memorial Cairn Highway 245, Knoydart In 1938, a cairn was erected on the site of a non-denominational cemetery to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Culloden. Every year an event is held in April to remember those who fought this battle.

Lismore Beach Route 245, Exit 27. Turn left onto Wharf Road and turn right before the Lismore fish processing plant. No facilities. It is generally quiet, allowing visitors to explore kilometres of sand and shoreline. Melmerby Beach Provincial Park Route 289, turn right at Shore Road. Supervised, broad sandy beach with change rooms, showers, toilets. A narrow, inner beach has very warm water. Boardwalks minimize damage to fragile dunes. Powell’s Point Provincial Park Route 289, turn left at Shore Road. The park has a saltwater beach on a peninsula jutting out into Little Harbour, reputed to be the warmest saltwater in Nova Scotia. Picnic tables, toilets, and parking. Rushton’s Beach Provincial Park Route 6, Marshville. A beautiful sandy beach with warm waters, picnic grounds, toilets, and change facilities.

Salt Springs Provincial Park Highway 104, Exit 19. A convenient place to stop and rest, this park, complete with washrooms and picnic tables, is located in a mature forest setting along the West River. Waterside Beach Provincial Park Route 6. A beautiful sandy beach with warm water, boardwalk over dunes. Facilities include picnic tables, change rooms, toilets, parking.

Trails (River John to Lismore) Albion Trail (3 km) Whether you’re into paddling, walking, hiking, cycling, or simply hooked on the outdoors, Pictou County’s network of multi-activity trails provide a scenic perspective into the heart of the Northumberland Shore. The Great Trail The Great Trail is the longest recreational trail in the world. Pictou County is proud to be a part of this system that stretches nearly 24,000 km from coast to coast. Jitney Trail (3 km) South Market Street, Pictou. From the parking area this trail runs west along the shoreline of Pictou Harbour to Brown’s Point. A portion of this trail is paved; excellent for wheelchair, bicycle, rollerblade, and stroller use. Shortline Trail (12.7 km) This trail is accessible at Blackie Road, Lyon’s Brook, Brown’s Point and Scotsburn (behind the firehall). This 12.7-km recreational trail is made of compacted surface suitable for cycling, walking, running, snowmobiling, skiing, and ATVs. Trenton Park Trail (6.5 km) 119 Park Road, Trenton. Trails for hiking, mountain biking, and skiing cross this 229-hectare park, passing mature hemlock stands, stocked ponds, and a beaver colony. Snowshoe loans are available in the winter months. This is a non-motorized trail. Other trails within Trenton Park are The Airport Route (4 km), and the Smeltbrook Trail (0.5 km). Pioneer Trail (3 km) Located on the east side of New Glasgow, much of the trail runs along former railway lines. A covered bridge spans 37 metres across the gorge that runs along Potter’s Brook. There is a heritage cemetery where several of the

Ship Hector’s passengers and many pioneers of the community are buried.

Marinas

Samson Trail (4 km) New Glasgow. Following the bed of Canada’s first iron railroad, the trail hugs the bank of the East River. Two sections are joined by a steel walkway under the town’s main bridge. Washrooms, picnic tables, and parking are available at Rotary Park.

Old Foster Trail (800 m) An accessible multi-use trail that connects two premiere recreation facilities in Pictou County: the Pictou County Wellness Centre and the Pioneer Coal Athletics Field. The Acadia Park Trail (2.35 km) This multi-use trail is located within beautiful Acadia Park and is a popular location for walks, biking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. Located in the heart of Westville, this trail is open year-round and is plowed during the winter months. Cape to Cape (400 km) Nova Scotia’s first long-distance foot path. This 400 km system of breathtaking coastal views spans from Cape Chignecto to Cape George. From easy afternoon strolls to more challenging hikes, you will find something for everyone on this system of trails. Fitzpatrick Trail Off Route 258. This well-groomed wilderness trail extends one way from Scotsburn to Millsville. Ideal for hikers and skiers (motorized vehicles are prohibited); it passes through alternating stands of hardwood and softwood, and traverses several streams. The mountain summit offers a panoramic view of Pictou County. Bluefin Tuna The International Game Fish Association has confirmed that 12-year-old Jenna Gavin is the junior female bluefin tuna record holder. On October 7, 2014, she caught the 618-lb fish in the Northumberland Strait with Giant Bluefin Tuna Charters out of Ballantyne’s Cove, using rod and reel, and a fighting chair.
