As always, the Halifax International Boat Show offers a great seminar series and panel discussions where you can learn everything about boating.

If you’re interested in shipwrecks and sunken treasure, this year we have speakers who will teach you about what lies beneath our waters.

Wayne Mushrow will be at the show talking about two astrolabes—ancient navigational instruments—he found off the coast of Newfoundland 30 years ago. He will also share the tale of how he eventually got those astrolabes to be part of the museum in his hometown of Port aux Basques, N.L. As well, Terry Dwyer will host a seminar on his shipwreck diving excursions. He will share details of his own shipwreck explorations and offer advice on how you can explore shipwrecks from your own boat.

And Michele Stevens will be on hand to share her tales of living the sailing life in the Caribbean during our winter months. She will also share advice on how you can head south on your boat for the winter, too.

If you love boats and food, our Cooking On Board seminar will give you lots of tips on how to prepare meals perfect for the galley. Sommelier Mark DeWolf will join longtime sailor Pat Nelder in this hands-on seminar. Together, they will share advice and tips on preparing delicious meals in your galley.

If you’re looking for a new boat or want to upgrade the one you have, the Halifax International Boat Show is the place to learn what you need to know.

In memoriam Halifax International Boat Show, its exhibitors, staff and its visitors will miss Wayne Hoskins and Schooner Cove Marine’s attractive booth with its full dock of boats.

Sadly, Wayne passed away unexpectedly on the evening of August 17, 2015 doing something he loved, riding his motorcycle. Wayne graduated from Sir John A. Macdonald High School and quickly began pursuing his passion for mechanics and engine repair. This eventually led to the formation of Schooner Cove Marine, incorporated in 1982, a respected and successful marine service and retail company in St. Margarets Bay. Wayne was a devoted husband, father and friend, and he enjoyed sharing time with all of them. He could frequently be found on his boat, working on one of his many projects, visiting with friends or just having a cigar and soaking up some rays. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

What lies beneath Tales of sunken treasure and mythical creatures

BY SUZANNE RENT The Halifax International Boat Show is your chance to learn about what lies in our waters.

Visit us to hear stories of astrolabes, mermaids and shipwrecks. Here’s a lineup of the tales you will find.

Raina: A mermaid’s tale Stephanie Brown never planned a career working as a mermaid. Her first experience as the mythical creature was in 2007. And then it was just recreational. But the experience also helped with chronic health issues she suffered from since she was a child.

“It was a way to empower myself to deal with the pain,” she says. “I am not a strong person on the shore. I am a bit clumsy.”

Brown then moved onto smaller gigs. A teacher by trade but without a full-time job, she eventually created a career for herself in 2009. The result is Halifax Mermaids, which Brown formed in 2012.

Under the company brand, Brown is better known as Raina Mermaid. Her fellow mermaids include Mimi Mermaid, Mermaid Victoria, Mermaid Nessie, plus Mer-wranglers, Sean and Marc.

Together, they host workshops, mermaid makeovers, birthday parties, and other events.

Brown says what she and the other mermaids provide is “edutainment.” In their case, the mermaids teach children about the ocean and its preservation.

Brown says adults learn about the dangers to our oceans from watching and reading the news.

But she presents the situation to children in a way that is informative but imaginative at the same time. “We need that shock value for adults, but kids don’t need that,” Brown says.

Brown says it’s important to teach kids about ocean conservation when they are young. That way, they grow up with a strong knowledge about our waters and how to preserve their ecosystems.

What she loves about her job as a mermaid is seeing the kids to react to her costume and her stories. “It’s amazing to see them light up,” she says.

Raina will be at the Halifax International Boat Show to teach kids about oceans and conservation. She will also share her own tales of being a mermaid. Sea her for yourself.

Terry Dwyer: Wreck Hunter Terry Dwyer was 16 when he explored his first shipwreck, the remnants of a vessel that sunk off the coast of Cape Breton in the 1800s.

“That sparked a sense of excitement that hasn’t left since,” Dwyer says.

Dwyer has spent the last 35 years exploring and studying wrecks around Nova Scotia. He says the province has one of the highest concentrations of shipwrecks in the world: 10,000 of them. He says some of the best wrecks are off Sambro Island.

Still, there are plenty of others off the shores of Cape Breton, where Dwyer grew up. These days, Dwyer is getting ready to explore the wrecks in the waters of his new home in Spanish Bay, on the province’s Eastern Shore.

Dwyer wrote two books about his work: Wreck Hunter: The Quest for Lost Shipwrecks and Wreck Hunter 2: The Adventure Continues.

He’s also worked as a safety diver on movies such as Titanic, The Shipping News, The Weight of Water, and K19: The Widowmaker.

Dwyer speaks at schools, universities, historical societies, and community groups that work to preserve the coastlines.

But Dwyer also shares his knowledge of exploring shipwrecks with others. He offers private expeditions, courses, seminars

on his work and how others can learn to explore shipwrecks on their own.

Dwyer wants to make exploring shipwrecks more accessible to others. He says that’s much easier now, thanks to new technology. Wannabe explorers don’t have to be certified divers to find or search these wrecks. Explorers can use the technology from the deck of their own boat.

“The robots are so easy to use, it’s like a Playstation,” Dwyer says.

Dwyer will share some of his experiences to guests during his seminar, Shipwrecks & Sunken Treasure, at the Halifax International Boat Show. That includes stories about shipwrecks he’s explored as well as photos of those wrecks. “We have some pretty smokin’ images,” Dwyer says.

“The photography will blow you away.”

Dwyer will also talk about the laws and regulations that govern exploring these wrecks and, in particular, who owns the artifacts explorers find during these searches.

While understanding the technology and regulations is important to searching wrecks, Dwyer says it’s really about something simpler.

“For me, it’s always been about the sense of adventure, exploring and the fun,” Dwyer says.

The Mushrow Astrolabes In 1981, Wayne Mushrow was exploring the wreck of a longliner in the waters off Iles aux Morts, just off Newfoundland’s rugged southwest coast when he made an amazing discovery.

As he followed the shoreline, he found the wreck of a much older ship and its contents, including an anchor, French coins, ceramic dishes, and pieces of shoes. Then, hiding in the sand of the ocean floor, he found a shiny artifact he didn’t recognize.

Mushrow took the piece home and cleaned its brass surface off with steel wool. Inscribed on the piece was the name Dyas and the date 1628.

Mushrow researched at his local library and sent photos of the artifact to museums around the world. He learned the artifact was an astrolabe, an ancient navigational tool. The one Mushrow found was used on ships in the 1500 and 1600s. He also discovered there are only 10 of these instruments uncovered from wrecks around the world and they were highly sought after artifacts.

“I knew then it was worth a fortune and it would be a jewel for Port Aux Basques and the museum there,” Mushrow says.

Mushrow didn’t want money for the valuable find. He wanted to make sure the artifact would be preserved at the Gulf Museum in Port aux Basques.

But what ensued was a struggle with the provincial government over the ownership of the astrolabe and who would receive credit for the discovery. Eventually, Mushrow came to an agreement regarding the astrolabe. The artifact spent several summers on display in his hometown’s museum, but Mushrow was never recognized for the find.

Two years later during another dive, Mushrow found a second astrolabe, this one dated 1617 and stamped with the name Adrian Holland. Determined to have this second piece preserved for history, Mushrow decided to bury it in the woods until he reached an agreement, in writing, with the Newfoundland government.

“An oral agreement with the government doesn’t work,” Mushrow says.

Those negotiations took 12 years and now the Mushrow Astrolabes spend each summer at the Port Aux Basques museum.

The only other astrolabe in the country is currently on display at the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa.

Mushrow is now working on a book about his astrolabe adventures. “And it’s the whole truth of what happened from day one,” he says. “When I look back on it, I am really proud I stood up and got one for my own town.”

At his home, he has replicas of the astrolabes, along with other memorabilia about his discovery. But in the meantime, he will be at the Halifax International Boat Show sharing his story of the astrolabes, how he found them and what they mean for the country.

“It’s such a unique part of Canadian history,” Mushrow says. “I want to teach them what a valuable find that was for Canadian history. You get to meet the person who actually found them.

I won’t be around forever.”

Wildlife on the water Canadian Wildlife Federation offers new guide for best practices on and around the water As Canadians, we enjoy many special connections with water Canada has the longest coastline and the most lakes in the world as well as more than two million rivers. All of this water flows across the land and drains into the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic oceans.

With all that water, it’s often easy to forget about the importance of keeping these watery spaces clean, safe and healthy for your yacht club, marina, neighbourhood and the wild creatures and plants that share our space. Most wildlife are especially sensitive to pollution, so the more wildlife and biodiversity we see the more likely our water area is a healthy place for all. The Canadian Wildlife Federation, one of the top 25 charities in Canada, is pleased to offer new training programs and tips for those who are Wild About Sports.

Show that you care for Canada’s rivers, lakes and oceans by taking action.

1. Follow best practices as an integral part of your daily activities on and around the water.

2. Report wildlife species that you have seen and correctly identified while on the water. This information can help scientists learn more about these species and their habits.

3. Help rescue sick or injured marine mammals that you encounter by calling rescue organizations. Important: Never attempt to handle these types of emergency situations directly.

4. Adopt a waterway. Join a local group and take responsibility for a stream, river, lake or shoreline near you.

Whether you are buying a new boat or maintaining or upgrading an existing boat, exhibitors at the Halifax International Boat Show have a range of products for your boat for you to browse, research and purchase. Here are some ideas. But remember there are a lot more than what is listed here:

1. Outboard Engines: Whether you are repowering or buying a new boat, boat dealers are the source of information about the latest and greatest for your boat. Outboards are constantly getting lighter, more fuel efficient and cleaner.

Inboard engines: If you are considering a new boat with an inboard or stern drive engine, or if you have a boat with one of these, the boat dealer is your source of information about maintenance schedules, trouble shooting or powering.

Diesel engines: If your new boat comes with a diesel, the boat dealer will keep you informed about this type of power. If you are repowering, the boat dealer who sells diesel-powered boats can help. There are specialist diesel engine exhibits in the show for main and auxiliary diesel power.

2. Propellers: Keeping your propeller in tiptop condition is essential to the speed and maneuverability of your boat. Boat dealers, engine dealers and speciality propeller shops are your source of information about these important parts.

3. Engine Controls and steering: New steering wheels, new controls for an existing boat can be sourced and researched at the boat dealer and at marine chandleries.

4. Electronics: from wireless radars and wind finders that mount on smart phones to depth sounders and VHF radios, from handheld GPS to the latest in-touch screen technology and tablet applications, if you can think it, you will find it. Or you can learn more at the chandleries and their suppliers.

7. Antifouling: Keeping the bottom of your boat clean is important for good performance. Antifouling can come in different colours to match your superstructure, it can be water based or resin based, and can be hard or soft depending on the usage of the boat. Check with paint manufacturers, chandleries and their suppliers for the best for your boat and application.

Rubbing compounds and polishes keep fibreglass looking its best and able resist dirt and grime in the summer months. Look for displays of these products throughout the show.

9. Anchors, fenders, mooring lines: Boating is much more fun when you have proper equipment for anchoring or securing your boat to the dock. There are different types of anchors, Plough’s, Danforth types, Bruce type each with individual strengths. Talk to an exhibitor at the show to find out the right weight for your boat and how much chain and rode (that’s the rope that you attach to the chain) you need. Fenders and fender covers keep your boat from being damaged when you are tied to a dock or alongside another boat, and a nice set of mooring lines sized for your boat keep you secure.

10. Hardware: Cleats, rod holders, running lights and much more can be added or upgraded. Check with the boat dealer or a chandlery.

Get in the galley Preparing meals on board takes practice and the right recipes

BY PAT NELDER Having cooked aboard many boats, including on long cruises and for many people, as well as going boating for family weekends, I have learned a few things about cooking on board. I’ve also learned about things I will never try again. That includes any recipe that says, “Turn dough onto a floured board and knead.” This is possibly not a good onboard recipe unless you are working on a super yacht. The lack of counter space and the ease of getting flour over the interior of the boat should put you off.

When you’re cooking in small spaces, learn to beat rather than knead. And parchment paper is a wonderful thing. Another phrase to avoid would be “marinate overnight in refrigerator.” This can only lead to heartache.

Even if you have a refrigerator, the boat is in motion, the fridge is small and the container may not be waterproof. The result is you marinate the inside of the fridge.

Duck a l’Orange is another recipe to avoid.

Putting a duck in a boat oven is a dangerous idea. Any recipe that calls for removing the roasting pan from the oven every hour and draining the fat can only lead to every surface in the galley, including the galley floor, covered with the slipperiest grease imaginable.

However, food aboard is a very important part of boating, whether you are stopping at a beautiful beach for a meal or going for a weekend cruise. Good preparation and proper storage and adequate cooking and cleaning equipment will add to your enjoyment. Boats come with many different configurations for cooking aboard, the size of the boat and its usage generally dictate what you can cook aboard.

Here are some tips for cooking on board:

Keeping food cold (refrigeration) Unless you are aboard a large vessel with full refrigeration, you are limited to a small refrigerator (which runs on shore power or off a battery charged by the engine or generator and, in some cases, propane), or the ubiquitous icebox.

1. Keep refrigerated foods in Ziploc bags to save storage space 2. If you are using an icebox, use one for food and one for cold drinks 3. If you are using a small onboard refrigerator, limit the times you open the door to preserve the coldness inside.

Cooking the food (stoves and barbecues) Larger boats will often have propane or electric stoves with ovens. Smaller boats may either have an alcohol-burning stove burner or an electric plate, which will only work on shore power or a generator. They may have a microwave that runs on shore power, generator or inverter. Many boats are equipped with small propane barbecues, which are used outside for making meals.

1. Make sure that what you want to cook is properly sized for the equipment that you have.

2. Make sure that the temperature that you want to cook at can be reached by the equipment that you have

Propane stoves light instantly and are as easy to use as a home gas range. The flame burns clean without the odour that comes with kerosene and is much hotter than alcohol. However, propane gas is heavier than air and will collect in bilge areas if a leak exists, resulting in a possibly explosive situation. With proper installation, basic safety precautions and common sense, the possibility of an explosion can be eliminated. Ask a marine service technician or a marine surveyor to check your system or self check it regularly. SEMINAR: Cooking On Board Preparing meals aboard the boat is limited only to your imagination. Coaxing flavour out of limited ingredients, using basic cooking equipment or none at all makes meal preparation a bit of a challenge. There will be tips about preparing food before you leave the shore and on preparing food aboard and we will be cooking for you during the presentation!

Mark DeWolf is Nova Scotia’s most recognized sommeliers. His Easy Entertaining column, which runs in Herald Homes, shares recipes and drink pairings as well as features everything from tips on buying the proper stemware to how to prepare a fabulous dinner for a crowd.

Together with Patricia Nelder, the pair will have fun imparting tips, ideas and techniques for Cooking On Board.

3. Make sure the pots you will use actually fit on the stove 4. A boat barbecue often has a small cooking surface and is adversely affected by wind, so make sure it is somewhat protected from wind while you are cooking. Most are equipped with lids that help retain the heat.

It is easy for the propane flame to blow out, so the person cooking must be vigilant.

5. Often the barbecue is mounted on the outside rail of the boat, so be careful that the meal in progress does not fall into the water

Storage of non-refrigerated foods Boats by nature are damp, so packaged goods such as sugar and salt can turn into crystallized lumps of unusable material. Boxed goods will get stale rapidly and canned goods can lose their labels and rust.

Keep foods in airtight containers and check them regularly for deterioration from dampness if left aboard for long periods of time.

Clean-up Fresh water is at a premium aboard a boat, unless you are tied to a dock with a readily available hose, or you have a water maker.

Discover Boating Workshops These are hands-on interactive workshops for novices as well as experienced boaters.

Knots for Boaters Having the right knot for the job is an important skill on any boat. Here is a chance to learn some new ones and practise those you know for the upcoming boating season.

Anchoring Skills Anchoring is more than just tossing the ‘hook’ over the side and hoping it catches! In this workshop, simple techniques are demonstrated that will help to anchor more effectively.

The Collision Regulations for small boats (new for 2016) Michael Ernst of Sail Mahone Bay A sailor and teacher, Michael Ernst has spent much of his life on the water. He first sailed the waters of Mahone Bay as a boy. After nearly three decades teaching outdoor education in the U.K. and Australia, he returned in 1994. Michael is a certified Sail Canada Cruising Instructor and holds Bachelor and Master’s degrees in education.

The COLREGS workshop covers the basics for power and sail and looks at some of the restrictions that apply to small boats when they get near larger working boats.

Boating Skills Workshop (new for 2016) This workshop covers a number of short topics in the time frame, using a throw line, a couple of anchoring/mooring techniques, making fast, securing to a dock, quick splicing, some ideas on navigation, signalling distress. A range of topics will be provided and participants can choose the most relevant to them.

The Mushrow Astrolabes with Wayne Mushrow In 1981 Wayne Mushrow found a strange artifact in a shipwreck in the waters off Iles aux Morts, Newfoundland. That artifact turned out to be an astrolabe, a navigational instrument used on ships in the 1500 and 1600s.

Mushrow found a second astrolabe two years later. Its discovery led to an 18-year struggle with the province of Newfoundland over the plans for preserving the artifact.

More than 30 years after, Mushrow is sharing his story about the astrolabes, how he found them, where they are now preserved, and their importance to Canadian history.

It’s a tale of discovery, preservation, and history for anyone who loves shipwrecks, the sea and exploration.

Shipwrecks & Sunken Treasure with Terry Dwyer There are more than 10,000 shipwrecks in the waters around Nova Scotia and Terry Dwyer will help you explore them. Dwyer is an accomplished adventurer, entrepreneur, wreck diver, explorer and underwater videographer. He’s explored many of these wrecks himself, gaining significant knowledge about their history in the process. He enjoys sharing his tips with other adventurers or anyone interested in shipwrecks.

In this seminar, Dwyer will talk about the latest technology for shipwreck exploration, as well as the ways in which you can explore some of these wrecks from the deck of your own boat. You will also learn the laws and regulations that govern shipwreck salvaging. But mostly, you will learn about a whole new world that lies just under our coastal waters.

Cooking On Board with Mark DeWolf and Pat Nelder Preparing meals aboard the boat is limited only to your imagination.

Coaxing flavour out of limited ingredients, using basic cooking equipment or none at all makes meal preparation a bit of a challenge. There will be tips about preparing food before you leave the shore and on preparing food aboard and we will be cooking for you during the presentation!

Mark DeWolf is Nova Scotia’s most recognized sommeliers. His “Easy Entertaining” column which runs in Herald Homes shares recipes and drink pairings, as well as features everything from tips on buying the

proper stemware to how to prepare a fabulous dinner for a crowd. Together with Pat Nelder, the pair will have fun imparting tips, ideas and techniques for Cooking On Board.

The definition of the Leeward Islands is not that specific. Some say they are the islands North of Dominica and east of Puerto Rico. Cruising sailors usually categorize them as the Islands of St Maarten/St Martin, Anguilla, St Barths, Saba, St Eustatius, St Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, and Antigua and Barbuda. In 1994 Michele Stevens joined the ranks of her great grandfather, grandfather and father and became the fourth generation to sew sails on Second Peninsula, N.S. at her sailloft Michele Stevens Sailloft. Her loft makes great sails for traditional and modern boats, sailcovers and awnings. She recently built sails for the Bluenose 11 and for the 141’ Gloucester Schooner replica Columbia.

This presentation is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Marina Facilities and their amenities on the Bras d’Or Lake and on the coast of Cape Breton Island. The 2016 Race the Cape runs from July 18 to 24. This is the fourth year for the point to point race, which attracts local boats, boats from Eastern Canada and the North East USA. Find out about the fun that seven days of racing in a beautiful place can give you.

Jennifer Rowe is the regatta coordinator for Race the Cape. As one of the founders of the race in 2012, she has been successfully promoting the event since. Jennifer has been sailing and racing on the Bras d’Or Lake since 1990.

Boating Opportunities for Women Whether you are a seasoned sailor, looking to start boating, or seeking unique options, there is a lot of information available from our panel of knowledgeable women. They will give you an overview of boating opportunities for women, their families and friends in the region.

Kate Pepler Kate grew up sailing in Toronto and began coaching when she was 15. She came to Halifax to attend Dalhousie University five years ago, and has been running the Learn to Sail program at Bedford Basin Yacht Club (BBYC) for coming up on three seasons now. Last year Kate started a women’s LTS initiative at BBYC that was hugely successful. Her favourite part about sailing is being on the water, with just the sounds of the sails and the water.

Ellen MacPhail Ellen MacPhail, owner of WaveSkills Sailing School in P.E.I., has one goal: to ensure all her students have a rewarding, safe and fun time on or around the water. As a Royal Yachting Association Yachtmaster, Sail Canada Advanced Instructor, winner of NSTYA class racing titles and with more than 30,000 sea miles, her remaining time is devoted to provincial associations of Sail Canada and Canadian Power and Sail Squadron in varying capacities.

Patianne Verburgh Patianne Verburgh, the shoreside team member in the Spirit of Canada Ocean Challenges Team started sailing at the age of 25 and quickly acquired her own boat and developed a passion for singlehanded racing. She joined the Spirit of Canada Ocean Challenges Team as a shore crewmember in 2000 and has promoted ocean racing in Canada for 15 years. After three-round-the-world races, five shorthanded ocean races, three short-handed Transatlantic races, one shorthanded transoceanic and one solo transatlantic, Patianne continues to assist others in the experience of a lifetime without the lifetime of experience; to cross an ocean in a Volvo 60 with Derek Hatfield.

Training and careers in the marine industry Did you know the people who work on your boat are often highly trained and skilled workers? Boats can be complicated pieces of machinery. The technicians who work on them have been trained not only by the product manufacturers, but also as marine service technicians and or boatbuilders.

Nova Scotia has a trade designation for Marine Service Technicians and for Boat Builders. Those wanting to enter the marine industry or already working in the industry can contact the training coordinator for Nova Scotia at the Nova Scotia Boatbuilders Association for information about training, apprenticeship and certification.

The Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency manages the training and certification of skilled trade workers and the Nova Scotia Boatbuilders Association training services to the boat building industry. In 2005, they formed a collaborative partnership to manage and administer the Nova Scotia Boat Building Apprenticeship Program.

Subsequently, Marine Service Technician was designated as a trade in 2012.

This shared trades-training commitment helps many apprentices and skilled trade workers succeed in the industry. Apprentices get the benefit of working with both organizations to be successful in their training and future career paths while employers gain committed and reliable workers who bring innovation to the industry.
