Evolve - It’s Our Birthday We’re not really sure when Advocate’s birthday is. Advocate Art, as a concept, evolved from one big idea - to have an agent but not to be like one! In 1990, Ed started out as a freelancer. In 1992, the studio merged together as a co-operative. In 1995, the company was incorporated and in 1999, the site was launched. In 1996, we wrote down our four FACTs; Fairness, Ability, Creativity and Trust. They say a company is founded on one big decision and lots of little ones, so this, the 20th year of F.A.C.T. we will enjoy marking it in many ways, all aimed at helping us evolve further into the next 20 years. This year’s MAG is an anniversary edition and is essentially a result of the experience and knowledge we have accumulated over the last twenty years. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Enjoy! Julija Lalina Agent

Katie Abey Katie Abey lives and works in a tiny and brightly coloured hobbit-like house in Derbyshire. Her ever-growing workstation is carefully positioned next to the kitchen (and therefore the fridge and kettle so she has easy access to tea.) Her simple and dynamic illustrations are inspired by anything weird and wonderful and often involve puns, sarcasm, bright colours and cute characters to create the ultimate combination of attitude and sweetiness. She is a big animal lover and enjoys illustrating appealing animal characters and likes to make them look awkward and uncertain as to whether they want to be there. Katie uploads a fun daily doodle online every day in her bid to spread daily doses of happiness, motivation, sarcasm and general randomness across the earth. She enjoys creating statements that are relatable and her favourite of her creations are the ones make people of all ages have a good chuckle. When she is not drawing awkward dinosaurs or posting out Etsy orders she enjoys going on adventures, having cuddles with Frank the cat and frequently changing her hair colour to match its surroundings. Commissioning At Advocate we are continually in search of the latest trends, and having connections with clients throughout the World, enables us to see how those trends are moving and developing on a wider scope. The valuable reference material we have sourced through clients, shows and other markets can then be fed through to our artists in the form of mood boards, such as those on the next few pages. Split into four key looks, we have focused on two Christmas themes (Merrry & Bright and Metallic Christmas) and two everyday looks (Modern Floral and Southwest). We are also happy to create specific trend boards for you using existing available artwork, please get in touch should this be something you wish to pursue. Alongside the existing and available artwork we have here at Advocate, all our artists have the capability to be commissioned on something new, exciting and unique just for you. So if you cant quite find that perfect piece of artwork, or would like more of something amazing, then get in contact and we can project manage the task at hand – treat us as an extension to your studio! Just because it is not in an artist’s portfolio, doesn’t mean they don’t have the capability of creating something great for you. Please get in touch should you like any further information. Natasha Harding Senior Agent

New Agent Coming from a background in Fine Art, I have always been a visually driven person with a keen eye for detail. I deal primarily with Advocate’s broad range of ‘Art Licensing’ clients and love the way this role allows me to work alongside creatives, watching their ideas come to life and showcasing the results. Searching for new talent, keeping up to date with the latest trends and promoting our wide collection of artists, means that Advocate Agents are always on the go and remain at the core of today’s creative industry. Exploring new places and meeting new people are no doubt the most rewarding part of this role, and it is this proactive approach that ensures we represent the most innovative new artwork. This year’s Mag shines light on just a small part of what we have to offer. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and working with you in the future. Annabel Collins Agent

Gina Maldonado I hail from Bogota, Colombia and Mexico — Hola! — where I studied Architecture, but since then have moved house several times and around the world. It was in Italy that I did my Masters in Interior Design and discovered my love for illustration (and gelato!). I currently live in the busy city of Hong Kong with my husband and my two lovely cats - Cereza and Nocciola. When it comes to inspiration, it’s my justification for travelling and watching cute animal videos on loop. When travelling, I love visiting local craft markets as well as zoos and farms and petting all kinds of animals. The best muses are without a doubt my two sweet cats, who come by for cuddles whenever I work! I’d describe my work as cute, sweet and fun. I just love colours and flowery details! I also like my illustrations to have their own textures so I make different textures from acrylics, gouache, pastels, and coloured pencils, to name a few. When I’m not working, I channel my creative energy into painting my nails with colourful designs, making sock creatures and of course, taking cute animal photos. I’m very passionate about my work and I can’t think of anything else in the world I’d rather be doing that could give me as much happiness. GLM149498

Claire McElfatrick My childhood ambition of becoming an artist soon became a reality when I found I was able to turn my doodles and painting into printed designs! Starting out as a freelance Textile Designer, I developed a strong passion for colour, pattern and texture, which would eventually lead me into my dream job of designing greetings cards and stationery for one of the UK’s biggest publishers. From Junior Designer to Design Manager, I spent 12 years building upon my skills and expertise within the industry and was fortunate enough to work with some of the UK’s leading retailers. Recently returning to freelancing, I am delighted that I can combine the two things in life that I love the most… spending time with my family and creating my own unique designs! Working from my home studio in rural Northamptonshire, I feel more inspired than ever and love to potter around vintage shops, tearooms, pretty gift shops and keeping an eye on the latest trends. Having two little girls to inspire me, I have spread my wings and started children’s book illustrations, with my first four doodle books due to be published next year! CMC150812

Debbie Edwards I grew up on a farm in Hastings, Australia, with 300 Angora goats and a menagerie of other animals including, at one stage, 5 cats and 4 dogs. Dinnertime was a little bit like the running of the bulls! I loved being in the country, but moved to Melbourne to study Fine Art and Design. My favourite adventure was living in London for six years. I met a lot of people from different cultures and was lucky enough to travel to so many beautiful places in the UK and other countries. My illustrations feature flowers that came from Monet’s Garden, Egyptian Temples, Byron’s House, Madeira’s Flower Festival and Beatrix Potter’s Cottage. I love creating unique mixed media designs that contain hand drawn and digital elements with lots of colour and texture. I am constantly inspired by nature and live near the beach in Australia with my adorable Cocker Spaniel Rosie. After 20 years experience as a graphic designer specialising in design for retail and illustrating at home, I get endless pleasure in creating concepts for greeting cards and paper products.

Gareth Williams Having nearly 10 years of in-house design experience working with worldwide leading publishers of greeting cards, gifts and stationery products has given me a keen eye for detail and a strong insight and creative awareness. My talents as a designer can be seen in my diverse style and approaches. I try and use my skills and inspiration in every design I do from cute characters to typography. I really love experimenting with new techniques. Being represented by Advocate is great and the projects that I have worked on have really helped me adapt my versatile styles to a variety of briefs. I hope to have continued success with Advocate and build on my extensive portfolio and broaden my creativity to children books and other design products in the near future.

Sophie Webber I have always been mad about art ever since I was little. I was born in Bedfordshire and grew up around the area, drawing and painting wherever I could. I completed a degree in illustration at Loughborough University in 2007 and, after moving around a fair bit, have come back to my home town, taking on a major house renovation project with my husband, daughter and 15 year old terrier. I draw inspiration from everything and everyone around me but particularly love the outdoors and nature. I am animal mad, especially dogs, which tend to pop up in my artwork a fair bit! One of my favourite places, which I always find inspiring, is the Lake District and we head up there as often as we can, wellies and dog in tow! I love projects where I get to use my creativity and imagination. I love using different colour combinations in my work, mixing it with line work and subtle patterns. Most of my career has been designing for the gift and stationery market where I have worked for busy, fast-paced design studios. I now work freelance from my own studio, which has a lovely view over the fields. Working with Advocate is great, and has really encouraged me to work on new ideas, and I have just illustrated my first Children’s book! SOW145545

Erin Brown I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1990. I spent my childhood pouring over books that were full of quirky, colourful, ink splattered illustrations, such as Quentin Blake who even today is an inspiration to me. I studied Fine Art: Painting at the University of Ulster. I now live in Newcastle Upon Tyne with my husband and our little dog, Daisy. I am driven by a joy to create, a love of colour and of the beautiful things in this world. I love seeing bright colours splash across the page. I use a mixture of watercolour paint and inks on watercolour paper. The inks I use are highly pigmented acrylic inks which have incredible colour intensity and staining power. I also love to experiment with glitter and metallic paints, anything that adds beautiful colours and textures to my work. I work from my home studio in Newcastle, where I am kept company by Daisy and the radio.

Frankie Van Mourik I’m at my happiest when I’m in my studio at the top of my house in the Lake District, with my Border Collie, Jip, at my feet and a pen, pencil or paintbrush in my hand. I love creating patterns and hand lettering. This really is my dream job! I studied Fine Art at university, playing with paint, photography, printmaking, textiles and even sound. I’ve since spent a lot of hours learning how to create patterns and illustrations from my drawings. I’m obsessed with Adobe Illustrator and I’m always looking to try out new styles and techniques. I’m inspired by my surroundings - I spend a lot of time walking by the sea and in nature. It’s not unusual for me to come home with pockets full of shells, feathers and pebbles! I’m also inspired by fine art, craft blogs, mid century modern design and music. I start my work from a playful place - anything that brings a feeling of being childlike helps to spark my imagination so it’s 80’s music and a big tin of felt tips all the way. I have fun when I make work and I believe this is reflected in the final product. FVM156075
