Local faces tell a bigger story

More than a place By Veronica Jamison,

CEO, Shepparton Villages

Dolly good fun!

GOT THEM DOWN TO A T...As the Shepparton Art Museum hosts the Archibald Prize 2026 finalists, local artist Tank captures something candid and genuine in three portraits of local, community spirited achievers. Pictured from left are: ABC Radio presenter Nic Healey, SAM Development Manager Carmel Johnson, Greater Shepparton City Councillor Anthony Brophy and artist Tank. Photo: Natasha Fujimoto

By Natasha Fujimoto AS we all applaud (and thank our lucky stars) for the Shepparton Art Museum’s hosting of the prestigious Archibald Prize 2026 exhibition, it seems only fitting that visitors can also experience another portrait collection celebrating people much closer to home. Hanging on Level 1 opposite the Lin Onus Gallery, local artist Tank’s striking portraits of SAM Development Manager Carmel Johnson, Greater Shepparton City Councillor Anthony Brophy and ABC Radio presenter Nic Healey provide a distinctly local counterpoint to Australia’s most celebrated portrait prize. Remarkable in their rendering of the three sitters at ease at home, Tank not only captures the personality of each subject in a fleeting moment, or in Carmel’s case, a knowing sideways glance, but also shines a light on locals who help shape Greater Shepparton through their advocacy, leadership and professional endeavours.

“The Archibald Prize itself is not just about celebrities,” Tank said. “It’s if someone’s done something in their field or is an important person in the community.” Revealing something genuine about three familiar locals, rendered in a striking yet warm colour palette, it is astounding to note these are the first portraits the artist, now 30 years into his creative career, has ever attempted. “I’ve never done portraiture before,” Tank said. “My idea of portraiture is a bit old-fashioned. I’ve always liked that sort of portraiture myself, so that’s what I’m trying to replicate. It’s about trying to capture those tiny moments that I know these people have, capturing the essence of the people.” Taking around six months from conception and coordination through to completion, Tank said the process proved one of the most challenging artistic undertakings of his career. “It was probably the most torturous thing I have done in a long time,” he said. “I found it

really hard and difficult, and I just don’t want to do it ever again. But I will.” Despite stepping well outside his comfort zone, Tank has produced three portraits rich in character and authenticity. Admitting that he “got a bit teary the first time” he saw his portrait, Nic Healey said, “I think Tank saw me in a way that I wouldn’t necessarily see myself.” While on the other hand, Anthony Brophy said he immediately recognised himself in the painting. “He captured me,” he said. “The look he got was spot on.” For Carmel Johnson, the portrait’s emotional centre was her beloved dog Ripley. “I was very humbled to be painted by Tank,” she said, adding that the bond between owner and pet had been “beautifully captured”.

There seem to be so many special days and even special weeks in the calendar these days. It can be hard to keep up. Of course, some dates will always matter to us more than others. For example, at Shepparton Villages we place particular importance on Aged Care Employee Day on 7 August each year. We hold it dear because it’s the ONLY date in the calendar that embraces ALL of our dedicated employees: whether they be nursing staff, maintenance people, caterers, cleaners, laundry, admissions, backoffice admin or any other role. They form a ‘community of care’ that’s worth acknowledging. Another noteworthy occasion on our calendar in recent years has been Seniors Week, an event well supported by local and State governments, and expanded of late to become Seniors Month, a festival running through the whole of October. One of the best local Seniors Month events put on this year has been a wonderful concert staged at Riverlinks by Greater Shepparton City Council, featuring musical tributes to some of the Queens of country music, including Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette and others. The concert, on Tuesday last week, was fabulous fun for the hundreds of attendees who packed into the complex, with many happy memories stirred up and many toes sent a’ tapping. I’m told some Shepparton Villages team members had fun too, helping staff the information stands set up in the foyer to answer people’s questions about retirement living, Support at Home services and other topics. Lots of friendly chats were had. For us, this kind of community event provides useful outreach into our local community, and a chance to disseminate information that many are seeking. But I’ll let you in on a secret: As we saw at Riverlinks, being useful is good – but adding a dose of bootscootin’ fun can make it even better! Let’s hear it for those special days, special weeks, and even a special month here and there – especially if they can give opportunities like this to get together, share worthwhile things, and even let our hair down a bit. Surely the great Dolly herself would approve!

AI in action at Latrobe’s Shepparton campus ARTIFICIAL intelligence was placed at the top of the regional business agenda when La Trobe University hosted its ‘AI in Action Conference’ at the Shepparton campus last Friday, October 9. For regional businesses, the timing was significant. AI is no longer a distant concept reserved for major metropolitan companies or technology specialists. It is becoming part of everyday decision-making, administration, customer service, data management, and strategic business planning. Developed by La Trobe University’s Shepparton and Albury Wodonga campuses in collaboration with principal sponsor RDA Hume, the event moved the conversation beyond theory and into practical, locally relevant action. With 60 confirmed attendees from business, government, education, NFP organisations and the student community, the conference reflected a growing appetite across the Hume region to better understand how AI can strengthen productivity, innovation and workforce capability. The day’s program brought together regional leaders, industry voices and academic expertise, with sessions ranging from a keynote on why AI matters to a live AI readiness selfassessment and a local panel exploring how the technology is already being used in real-world settings. Importantly, the format gave organisations a chance to measure where they sit on the AI adoption curve and identify practical next steps for their workforce.

NO LONGER A DISTANT CONCEPT... Placing the inexorable advance of artificial intelligence (AI) at the top of the regional business agenda, La Trobe University hosted its ‘AI in Action Conference’ at its Shepparton campus on Friday, October 9. Pictured from left are AI in Action conference attendees: Local Jobs Program - Goulburn Murray Job Coordinator, Faye D’Helin, Committee For Greater Shepparton CEO, Linda Nieuwenhuizen and North East Local Learning and Employment Network CEO, Anna Stephenson. Local business owner, Adele Dyson of Adventure Awaits, located in Numurkah, had this to say: “We've been in business for 13 years now, and while we have a retail store on the main street of Numurkah, our business is much bigger than many people would suspect. We operate on a national scale, with approximately 85 per cent of our revenue derived from online trading. “We’ve been using AI for around four years now, but things change so quickly even daily, so it’s important for us to keep our finger on the pulse when it comes to AI. “We use Claude, Chat GPT and various other agents daily, they’re set up to assist us to make informed strategic business decisions. However, we don't use any bots in our customer experience process and are strong believers that we still need humans to manage that process, so that we remain authentic and our team ultimately continue to be in the driver’s seat when it

comes to using AI. “Attending the session at LaTrobe was really refreshing. Often as business owners and as regional entrepreneurs, we don't often get to do the professional development piece, particularly within rural areas like ours, so it was great for us to have access to this level of insight.” Adele said. As businesses continue to navigate skills shortages, digital transformation and evolving customer expectations, workforce adaptability will be central to future growth. AI in Action was therefore more than a one-day conference. It was a timely regional conversation about opportunity, confidence and preparedness. By bringing local decision-makers into the same room, the event positioned Shepparton and the wider Hume region to take a proactive role in shaping how artificial intelligence supports business, people and community outcomes.

Staying a step ahead at school

Stepping up … Every Day Counts footpath reminders, courtesy Shepparton Education Plan and Greater Shepparton City Council

It’s a simple message in an unexpected place. New footpath stickers will soon pop up in busy community spaces across Greater Shepparton to remind families that Every Day Counts when it comes to school attendance. Made from durable, anti-slip material, the messages are safe to walk on yet difficult to ignore – a streetwise reminder to our families that even small absences from school quickly add up to significant lost learning. In fact, students missing just a day a fortnight over 2026 will lose an entire month of education by the end of the year. For many, this will impact school outcomes now and into 2027. So, if you spot a new message underfoot in the weeks ahead, take note. School attendance is a key contributor to success in the classroom and in future career aspirations.

Your School Can Help! Teachers and principals are parents too, and they appreciate the challenges families can face with regular school attendance. Scan the QR code for advice and always reach out to your school for assistance.

Election promise to get Second River Crossing back on track continued from front page NATIONALS leader and Shadow Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Danny O’Brien, announced the commitment alongside Nationals candidate for Shepparton Shane Sali, Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell, Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe and Goulburn Valley Highway Shepparton Bypass Action Group president Peter Johnson OAM. Mr O’Brien said the funding would pay for further engineering, planning and design work needed to advance the project and eventually seek renewed Commonwealth investment. “We will put $25 million on the table to get that further engineering, design and plans done to make sure that we actually get this up and ready to go,” he said. The announcement comes after a $208 million previously committed by the former federal coalition government was withdrawn and cancelled by the federal Labor Government in 2023. Mr O’Brien said the project needed to return to the planning stage before further federal funding could be sought. “We need to go back a step to make sure that we’ve got the planning money, that we’ve got the planning designs, everything ready to go,” he said. If elected on November 28, Mr O’Brien said the commitment would be included in the Coalition’s first budget and the federal government would be approached to support the project. Following Mr O’ Brien to the microphone, Mr Sali, who has been a strong and consistent advocate for the second river crossing and broader Shepparton Bypass project during his consecutive mayoral terms, said making the project a state priority was key to its delivery. “The only way we can deliver this project is if it becomes a state priority project for Victoria.

“We are a freight and logistics hub, and a second river crossing built above flood level to carry our heavy vehicles out of the CBD is how you move freight efficiently and effectively across the state. “When we were cut off during the ’22 floods, that didn’t just impact our freight and logistics; it impacted our community, our health professionals and emergency services.” He said about 35,000 vehicles used the existing causeway each day, including about 3,500 heavy vehicles, while the 2022 floods demonstrated the consequences of losing the Shepparton - Mooroopna connection. Long-time Goulburn Valley Highway Shepparton Bypass Action Group chair, Peter Johnson OAM, described the commitment as the “correct starting point” after decades of advocacy. In a subsequent interview, Mr Johnson clarified that the $25 million was important because extensive preparatory work would be needed before the project could be put through the process for Commonwealth consideration.

“You’ve got to have all the data, all the calculations, all the costings, everything of that nature,” he said. Previous planning work included a $10 million business case Mr Johnson said, but he questioned how detailed its design and costing work had been and said the information had not been made publicly available. Despite the renewed political commitment, Mr Johnson said construction would not be immediate estimating it could take three to four years, even if the project progressed smoothly, to complete the substantial preparatory and approval work required before construction could begin. “I would think you’d say three to four years from this point. If it all went well, get it started,” he said. But after 25 years of campaigning, Mr Johnson said giving the crossing priority status and funding the next stage represented a crucial step towards finally advancing the project.

Acknowledging the Shepparton Agricultural Society and Volunteers I presented a plaque at the Show acknowledging the incredible 150 years milestone and presenting certificates to Sue Trevaskis and Faye Hocking for their dedicated 33 years of volunteering service to the Agricultural Society.

Shepparton Bus Review Announcement Finally, after many years of advocacy alongside many stakeholders and the community, we will finally have a bus review which is budgeted for. As a growing region, we have desperately needed this review to happen. The last review was back in 2009 and since this time, we have some towns with limited or no public bus transport services at all, along with new housing estates that need to be included. Not everyone has a vehicle or can drive. The consultation process must ensure that this review meets the public bus transport needs of our region.

FUN DAY OUT... Mooroopna Hall is set to play host to a jam-packed fundraising event aimed to help upgrade the community hub. Photo: Supplied.

Mooroopna Hall fundraiser aims to build a brighter future By Maddison Howell REMOTE-controlled trucks, mini golf and market stalls will take centre stage in Mooroopna this month, as the local hall committee looks to raise funds for a new roof and further improvements. The Mooroopna Hall committee will host a two-day fundraiser on October 24 and 25, inviting the community to enjoy a weekend of family-friendly activities while supporting a much-loved local space still working towards recovery after the devastating 2022 floods. Committee member Michael Nowosad, who has been involved for nine years, said the event would offer something for all ages. “We’ve got a great lineup of entertainment happening, including a display of remotecontrolled trucks as our main entertainment, a 9-hole mini golf course which will be great for families, various vendors selling their wares and of course some food on offer too,” he said. There will also be a cupcake competition, market stalls and yard games, with paid entry helping contribute to the committee’s fundraising efforts. While the main hall remains in reasonable condition, the adjacent MG O’Brien Hall is

in need of replacement, making upgrades a priority for the committee. “We’re hoping to raise around $30,000 to repair the roof, and beyond that we’d like to build more facilities for better accessibilities,” Mr Nowosad said. The committee is also looking towards the future, with plans to install projectors to make the venue more suitable for business meetings, training days and other community uses. “We’re doing things that are positive for the hall and I think our goal is to do more to take it into the realm of today’s world while still keeping the old feel of the building,” he said. For Mr Nowosad, the fundraiser is about more than fixing a roof, it is about giving the community a place to gather, connect and create shared experiences. “It’s all about future proofing the hall,” he said. “I think now is the time for community to get together and work towards making it a special place again, and this is the ideal place to start.” The Mooroopna Hall fundraiser runs October 24 and 25, with residents encouraged to come along, enjoy the activities and support the hall’s next chapter.

Welcome to the Blue House – where wise water usage wins

WATER SAVING IDEAS, TIPS & ACTIVITIES... Goulburn Valley Water has opened its doors to its Blue House this Water Week at 18-20 Fraser Street. An interactive space filled with ideas, activities and practical inspiration for using water more wisely at home and in the garden, the Blue House has something for all ages, with hands-on displays, expert presentations and plenty of activities for children. Photo: Emma Harrop

Visitors will be able to move through different areas of the home and discover simple ideas they can incorporate into everyday life, showing that conserving water can begin with small changes close to home. The Blue House is about encouraging the community to think a little more about the water we use each day and how everyone can play a part in looking after this precious resource. GVW’s Blue House will be open from 10.30am to 4.30pm, Monday, October 19 to Friday, October 23, and from 10.30am to 2.30pm on Saturday, October 24. For the full program of activities and events, visit gvwater.vic.gov.au/community/ water-week.

Visitors can pick up practical advice on everything from permaculture and detecting household leaks to creating a waterwise garden, while also learning more about water projects being delivered by GVW. On Saturday, the focus will extend beyond the home, with the RiverConnect education team hosting a water bugs activity exploring the health of local waterways. GVW staff will also be on hand throughout the week to chat about water use and efficiency, programs and services, or help customers with water and billing enquiries. Building on the success of last year’s Let’s Grow Waterwise Gardens event, the Blue House brings the water-saving conversation indoors.

SAVING water at home doesn’t have to mean making big changes. Sometimes, it’s the small things we do every day that can make a difference. That message will be brought to life in Shepparton this National Water Week, when Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) opens the doors to its Blue House. From Monday, October 19 to Saturday, October 24, the former Intersport store at 18-20 Fraser Street will be transformed into an interactive space filled with ideas, activities and practical inspiration for using water more wisely at home and in the garden. There will be something for all ages, with hands-on displays, expert presentations and plenty of activities for children.

Rallying for the mental health of young people A fitting partnership to help advance the cause, the Lighthouse Project has worked alongside organisations, businesses and community members for more than 12 years to create brighter futures for local children and young people. Its initiatives have reached more than 13,000 children, young people and families, supporting better health, wellbeing and education outcomes. In the lead-up to the event, Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project Board Chair, Adam Furphy said the organisation was thrilled to be involved. “We’re incredibly excited to be joining the KFC Youth Foundation as community partners for this year’s Rally 4 Youth event,” Mr Furphy said. “At the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project,

REVVING hard in its ongoing support for young people’s mental health, wellbeing and confidence, the KFC Youth Foundation put the pedal to the metal on Thursday, October 15, launching its Rally 4 Youth from organiser and KFC franchisee Chris Retzos’ renowned personal car facility, home to a jaw-dropping collection of cars, petroliana and motoring memorabilia. Bringing 42 cars together for a three-day journey through the Murray River region, the rally carried added significance this year, partnering with the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project for the first time as its community partner, alongside the Foundation’s two long-term charity partners, ReachOut Australia and Black Dog Institute.

RALLYING IN SUPPORT... of young people’s mental health, the KFC Youth Foundation’s annual Rally 4 Youth was launched on Thursday, October 15. Bringing together 42 cars for a three-day journey through the Murray River region, the event will help the KFC Youth Foundation towards reaching its $15 million fundraising milestone. Pictured is KFC franchisee and Rally 4 Youth organiser Chris Retzos. Photo: Emma Harrop we’re passionate about creating brighter futures for children, young people and families across our community by building their capability, confidence and wellbeing and helping them reach their full potential. “We’re proud to be part of Rally 4 Youth and excited to come together with KFC Youth Foundation and the wider community to celebrate

and support the young people who are at the heart of what we do.” Having raised $427,000 at the previous Rally 4 Youth event in 2023, and more than $1 million since the first rally in 2018, Rally 4 Youth has once again played a significant role in helping the KFC Youth Foundation towards its $15 million fundraising milestone.

Great wine, minus the fancy label at Phillips Cellars WHY pay more for the label when you can enjoy a great wine for less? At Phillips Cellars, cleanskin wines are all about quality, variety and value, with bottles starting from just $9. Personally selected by Paul Phillips from more than 15 wineries, every wine is carefully tasted and assessed before earning its place on their shelves. “Cleanskin wines are basically a wine without a label, they’re all good quality selected by me personally,” Paul said. “I personally test and select each one based on value and quality, if they don’t make the grade then I don’t sell them.” The range includes reds, whites and sparkling wines, with plenty of options to suit different taste buds and occasions. Among the popular picks are Heathcote Shiraz and McLaren Vale Shiraz for red wine lovers, while the King

Valley Pinot Grigio offers a refreshing white option. New to the lineup is Bonjour, a Heathcote French-style dry white wine that gives customers yet another reason to explore the range and discover a new favourite. “If these wines had a label on them, they would be double the cost, so buying cleanskin wines is a great money saver,” Paul said. With the cleanskin range always available at Phillips Cellars, customers can keep coming back to discover different drops without stretching the budget. Whether you’re planning a barbecue, entertaining friends or simply looking for an affordable new wine, there’s plenty to discover. So why not leave the fancy label behind and focus on what really matters: enjoying a good wine at a great price. Drop into Phillips Cellars at 119 Corio Street, Shepparton and browse the cleanskin selection.

Conference marks 11 years of listening and action THE Ngar-wu Wanyarra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Conference will return to Shepparton this month, marking 11 years of sharing First Nations knowledge, experiences and perspectives on health and wellbeing. The conference will be held on Wednesday, October 28, on Yorta Yorta Country at the University of Melbourne’s Shepparton campus. Meaning “listen and act” in Yorta Yorta language, Ngar-wu Wanyarra brings together community members, academics, health professionals and leaders to discuss issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This year’s keynote speakers are Uncle Travis Lovett, executive director of the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Truth-Telling and Dialogue, and Dr Bridie Hofstee, director of Indigenous Medical Education at Melbourne Medical School. Department of Rural Health Professor Lisa Bourke said this year’s conference would prioritise truth-telling about

past and present realities while celebrating the strengths and successes of First Nations people. “First Nations people understand what is best for their communities, and this is an opportunity to learn from their successes, understandings and vision for the future,” she said. The program will explore First Nations cancer research priorities, strengthening community voices in health research, barriers within prisons and ways of bridging knowledge. Attendees will also have opportunities to connect through cultural activities, including weaving and spear making. “Ngar-wu Wanyarra is more than a conference,” Professor Bourke said. “It’s a gathering of community, knowledge holders, health professionals and leaders united by a shared commitment to improving health outcomes for First Nations peoples.” Tickets remain available at go.unimelb.edu.au/83fh.

“LOCK THEM IN”: BROWNLOW MEDALLIST’S TOP TWO LOCK FOR 2027 SEN

Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney has locked Hawthorn in for a top two spot way ahead of the 2027 AFL season. Trade Period was a major success for the Hawks, acquiring two of the biggest fish on the market with Gold Coast’s Ben King and Essendon’s Zach Merrett landing at Dingley ahead of the new year. Adding superstar talent to an already strong list that was a kick away from a spot in the Grand Final, Sam Mitchell enters his fifth season with his strongest assets by far, and arguably the best list in the competition. With that in mind, Cooney can’t see a world where they finish outside of the top two in the upcoming season. “I’m going to lock them in for a top two spot next year,” Cooney told SEN Sportsday. “It’s not too outrageous to say that given they finished top four this year and potentially could have played in a Grand Final. “It’s not an outrageous statement, but I think with King and Merrett coming in, they certainly improve. “Can Ben King and Jack Gunston share a forward goal square together?
