Large-scale battery location causes community concern By Deanne Jeffers AN objection to a planning application for a proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on Grahamvale Road, Shepparton, has been formally lodged as residents and Greater Shepparton City Council find concerns with the proposed location. The planning application by Avenis Energy is currently available for public exhibition and community feedback online. Council made the objection following an independent review of the agricultural and irrigation implications of the proposal for a 480-megawatt (MW) BESS at 305 Verney Road and 221 Grahamvale Road. Upcoming fundraiser and exciting new plans for local shooting range By Maddison Howell LOCAL shooting range is preparing for another major community fundraiser, with shooters and visitors expected to gather at the Pine Lodge range for an annual Blue Ribbon Shoot. Continuing the branch’s long-standing tradition of using clay-target shooting events to support community causes, the Shepparton Branch of the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia (SSAA) are hosting a Blue Ribbon shoot at 1170 Midland Highway, Pine Lodge. This community event aims to raise funds to support local health infrastructure through the Blue Ribbon Foundation. Shepparton SSAA shotgun club President Goffrey Morton said the event has continued to grow since its inception around two decades ago. “Arnold Warburton came up with the idea around 20 years ago and since then it’s been getting bigger and bigger each year,” Mr Morton said. “It’s quite a good day out and it’s important to support our local hospitals in any way we can.” The event is expected to attract shooters from across the Goulburn Valley and further, with last year’s event drawing more than 100 competitors. “Last year we had about 107 shooters and each year it’s only getting bigger and better,” Mr Morton said.

CEO, Shepparton Villages

“We have people who travel as far as Griffith for our events, the support means a great deal.” The day will feature a 100-bird simulated clay-target shoot and participants will also have access to the facility’s air-conditioned clubhouse, canteen and restroom facilities, making the event an opportunity for spectators and families to spend time at the range as well as compete. Local businesses will again play a role in supporting the fundraiser by contributing prizes for competitors. “Some local businesses contribute to the prizes handed out on the day which is absolutely fantastic,” Mr Morton said. For those interested in attending, the My Club My Scores (MCMS) app will provide information about the event, including bookings and squad allocations. Shooters will be able to see when they are scheduled to compete, with squads generally consisting of five or six people. “The Victorian President for the sporting shooters will be there on the day, there will be a full canteen, so we encourage people to come out to have a look and buy a raffle ticket to support the club and support a good cause,” Mr Morton said. Beyond its fundraising activities, the club is

Time to get fire ready A Victorian initiative by CFA is underway with more than 630 brigades hosting events to prepare communities ahead of another potentially challenging fire season. Get Fire Ready will run throughout October and the start of November, aimed at helping communities understand their fire risk and what to do in an emergency. "Preparedness saves lives. By getting fire ready now, communities can reduce their risk and respond quickly if fire threatens,” said CFA chief officer, Jason Heffernan. “Brigades are either holding events at their station, at local community events, or within the community.” Some local events include:

also looking towards the future, with major developments planned for the range. Goffrey, who has served as president of the shotgun club for about 27 years, said the branch had recently purchased about 50 acres of land to add to their current 14 acres. “We’ve recently purchased around 50 acres of land that we’ll be able to utilise around Christmas time which is going to be great for that additional room for our shooters,” Mr Morton said. “Additionally, we’re expanding our club room, focusing on more room for our function room and offices, so we’ve got a lot of exciting things happening.” With the Blue Ribbon Shoot continuing to grow and further development planned for the Pine Lodge complex, the branch is looking to build on both its sporting and community activities in the years ahead.

Costs add up Last week I referred to the hidden costs that can come from NOT making decisions, particularly in the context of our living arrangements – where we live, how we live, what we live in. Many people will often put off decisions to change any aspect of how they are living out of worry about what the cost is going to be. And fair enough. It’s right to keep an eye on costs. But this can go too far. What many fail to consider is the rising cost of staying put, often in a home that’s bigger than they need these days. The rising cost of heating it in winter, cooling it in summer. The rising cost of insurance. The growing need for repairs and maintenance in an older house. The costs of maintaining a property with a big front and back yard – either in wear and tear on you, or in payments to someone else to do the work. The list goes on. Moving into a retirement village can offer benefits in terms of a sense of community, increased security, access to useful facilities and the peace of mind that comes from a more low-maintenance lifestyle – but also from some real cost savings too. There can be scope to trim some household budgets considerably. But the devil can be in the detail, of course, so it’s always important to get good impartial advice before you make any big changes. Just remember though: doing nothing is not necessarily the cost-saving option – for many it can be quite the contrary. MAJOR PROJECTS DELIVER LASTING BENEFITS FOR GREATER SHEPPARTON

A $3M Victorian Government investment has delivered major upgrades to Greater Shepparton’s sporting facilities and shared path network. The investment has funded improvements at VISY Community Stadium and Shepparton Sports Stadium, as well as the 2.38km expansion of the Yahna Gurtji Shared Path between Gemmill Swamp Wildlife Reserve and KidsTown. At VISY Community Stadium, upgraded basketball courts, modern scoreboards and shot clocks, gender-inclusive accessible change facilities and roof improvements have enhanced the experience for players and spectators. Shepparton Sports Stadium has also received accessibility upgrades, improved change rooms, roofing repairs and new sporting equipment, while a new car park and internal footpaths

across the Sports City Precinct have improved safety and access and will support future regional sporting events. The Yahna Gurtji Shared Path expansion has created a scenic walking and cycling connection between Shepparton and Mooroopna, encouraging active lifestyles while providing greater access to the Gemmill Swamp Wildlife Reserve. Interpretive signage along the route also highlights the region’s cultural and environmental heritage. Greater Shepparton Mayor Cr Geoff Akers said the projects would deliver long-term benefits for the community, supporting local clubs,

Farmers face visa uncertainty amid Labor’s backpacker changes By Maddison Howell AUSTRALIAN farmers are facing uncertainty as harvest season approaches, with the Federal Opposition criticising the Albanese Government’s changes to Working Holiday Maker visas. Shadow Minister for Immigration Jonathon Duniam, Nationals Deputy Leader Darren Chester and Shadow Assistant Minister for Agriculture Sam Birrell believe that the government is leaving farmers to resolve problems created by its migration reforms. This criticism follows changes announced by Immigration Minister Tony Burke that would cap the number of working holiday-makers who are planning to extend their stay here. Under the revised arrangements, secondyear visa places are set to fall from 57,000 to 45,000, while third-year places will drop from 31,000 to only 5,000. The government’s figures represent a significant reduction in opportunities for backpackers to remain in Australia, in turn, raising concerns among agricultural businesses that rely heavily on seasonal workers to pick and pack crops. Senator Duniam has called on the government to clarify how farmers would access the workers they need, who would determine which applications receive priority, and how quickly these decisions are to be made. Also questioning what support would be available to other affected industries, such as hospitality and tourism. Mr Chester warned that the changes could intensify workforce pressures during critical agricultural periods, while Mr Birrell said farmers and harvesting contractors were concerned about experienced workers being

left in limbo. "Farmers are telling me they are anxious and worried about the upcoming peak season, but to make matters worse, it will now be up to them to prove why they need extra workers," Mr Birrell said. "Labor owes it to our farming community to explain exactly how it will fix this mess and prioritise the workers that farmers need.” Committee for Greater Shepparton CEO Linda Nieuwenhuizen explores the key role backpackers play for our region. “Continuing workforce shortages for most of this decade have forced our local employers to invest time and effort to plan ahead – but whether it's picking season or flu season, plans are not a guarantee. Backpackers have played a key role in meeting the gaps. The introduction

of caps and ballots increases the uncertainty for industry and for backpackers.” Acting as a vital lifeline for regional communities, the Working Holiday Maker program supports temporary employment across regional industries. The Department of Home Affairs says the program allows young adults from more than 40 partner countries to holiday in Australia for up to 12 months while undertaking short-term work and study. Agriculture is an important part of this scheme, with jobs such as fruit picking, crop cultivation and packing on offer. The Opposition is calling for clearer guidance and a longer-term solution, arguing that farmers need reliable access to workers to protect production and keep Australia’s food supply evolving.

around $200,000. The proposed ICC would bring cancer treatment, specialist clinics and wellness services together under one roof, improving access to care for people across the Goulburn Valley. GV Health is currently the only one of Victoria’s six designated regional public health services without an ICC. GV Health Foundation Acting Chair Ella Cannon said the contribution demonstrated strong community support for the project, while Perform Projects Managing Director Julian Farrugia said access to quality healthcare was an important part of building a strong regional community. Musing about the poetry under the fingernails By Aaron Cordy FINDING a way through trauma and mental health issues takes everyone on a different journey. For Nicole E. Hughes, losing herself in poetry helped make sense of a world that can be crushing at times. Taking the solace she found in writing poetry, Nicole turned it into a book, Dirt Under My Nails, Poetry in My Head, which she launched at the September GV Writers meeting. “Poetry kept me alive. The book is not just an expression of art; it’s a coping mechanism

that helped me push through the darker times, especially through the medical parts where I couldn't work. I didn't do this for me. I've done it for everyone else who believes they can't push through afterwards,” said Nicole. Nicole has been a mentor and advocate in the mental health space and wants to continue using her platform to help people in regional areas. She launched Dirt Under My Nails, Poetry in My Head, to coincide with September's suicide prevention and awareness month. She even donated $5 from every copy sold at the GV

O’KEEFFE MP

THE NATIONALS MEMBER FOR SHEPPARTON DISTRICT

Final Sitting Week It is hard to believe that I have had my final sitting week in Parliament. It has been such an incredible honour to be the State Member of Parliament for the Shepparton District, this past four years, something I will always reflect back on with such gratitude and pride. We have achieved so much together. Whilst I am finishing up my time in Parliament as your local member, my love and support for the community will not change.

Shepparton South Community House 40th Anniversary It was wonderful to join the Shepparton South Community House to celebrate their 40th anniversary. The Centre has worked tirelessly supporting the community with many support services, food relief, adult education programs, art and craft programs, a monthly community lunch and so much more. Around 80 people came to celebrate this wonderful milestone. A big thank you to the staff, volunteers, board members and everyone who supports the centre.

Protecting Our Region Protecting our region from Queensland fruit fly is essential to safeguarding local growers, preserving market access and maintaining consumer confidence in the quality of our produce. An outbreak can result in substantial economic losses, increased production costs and restrictions on the movement and sale of fruit and produce. Agriculture Victoria has a fantastic resource in how to manage and control fruit fly from your garden at home, visit the link here: https://agriculture.vic.gov.au/biosecurity/pestinsects-and-mites/priority-pest-insects-and-mites/queensland-fruitfly/controlling-queensland-fruit-fly-in-home-gardens.

LETS IMAGINE A FATALITY-FREE MONTH October is Motorcycle Awareness Month. RoadSafe Goulburn Valley is urging drivers and motorcyclists to look out for each other and to share the road safely. Motorcyclists face significantly higher risks when incidents occur on the roads. Road safety is a team effort, and together we can work together to achieve a fatality-free month. This nationwide campaign takes place every October in Australia, focusing on shared road safety, rider visibility, and practical everyday behaviours for both drivers and riders. Motorcycle riders make up around three per cent of registered vehicles in Victoria. However, they account for around 17 per cent of road deaths and around 23 per cent of very serious injuries. Drivers are urged to break the habit of only looking for large objects like cars and trucks. Please look and re-look at intersections, especially on country roads, before turning across oncoming traffic or pulling out from a T-junction. Look once, then look again specifically for two wheels. Double-check blind spots too. Motorcycles disappear completely behind a car’s door pillars and other vehicles. Always execute (practice makes perfect) a physical head check before merging or changing lanes. Give riders plenty of room. Motorcyclists may brake unexpectedly or swerve slightly within their lane to avoid potholes or debris that a car would drive straight over. Key message to riders: Assume you’re missed. Because motorcycles are smaller and easily obscured by blind spots or intersections, riders must protactively manager their space. Constantly adjust your positioning within your lane. Do not hug the kerb and ride where you are most visible to oncoming traffic and side-street drivers.

If we can’t see you–we can’t see you! This applies to all vulnerable road users. It may be cool to ride with shorts and t-shirts, however, a point to note is that casual denim shreds instantly on bitumen. Our suggestion is to wear specialised motorcycle jeans equipped with Kevlar-reinforced liners and ensure you wear full impact-resistant body armour for every trip. Check the TAC’s Only Protected for a Moment for more information. Always, always buy your protective headwear from a knowledgable retailer that is safe and certified. Whether you’re cruising the streets, hitting the track, or heading offroad, your helmet is your #1 safety essential. Crashes don’t just affect those who are injured, but have a major impact on others around them, including family members and first responders who attend these incidents. Riders can access and fill out a free Motorcycle Crash Card to carry in their helmet, giving first responders immediate access to crucial medical and emergency contact details. During October, there will be community launches, regional safety campaigns and community advocacy by RoadSafe Goulburn Valley, supported by statewide digital safety campaigns featuring ambassadors like comedian Ross Noble. Check out the link on the RoadSafe Goulburn Valley Facebook site and like and follow for more information on being road safe. Think safe, be safe. Kind regards, Bill Winters. Large-scale battery location causes community concern continued from front page THE review found that the key issue is not the need for battery storage infrastructure, but whether the proposed site is appropriate for this type of development. The site is within the Shepparton Irrigation Area and is serviced by strategic infrastructure, surrounded by intensive irrigated horticulture. The area has also benefited from significant government investment in irrigation modernisation. Mayor, Councillor Geoff Akers, said that while Council strongly supported the transition to renewable energy, developments needed to be appropriately located.

“Greater Shepparton welcomes renewable energy investment and recognises the important role battery storage will play in our future energy system. Our concern with this proposal is about the location,” he said. “This is productive agricultural land within a declared irrigation district, supported by important irrigation infrastructure and significant public investment. We need to ensure renewable energy development does not unnecessarily compromise these strategic agricultural assets.” Mayor Akers said that Council has demonstrated support

for renewable energy projects in appropriate locations including the Pine Lodge BESS and renewable energy development at GV Link Enterprise Park. He said Council was eager to continue attracting these investments to the region and working constructively with developers and prospective investors to identify appropriate locations that allow renewable energy and agriculture to prosper together. Last push for Shepparton Sports Stadium DURING her final speech in parliament, retiring Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has called on the State Government to invest in a new sports and events centre for Shepparton. Ms Lovell’s advocacy for the project has been unrelenting, with the matter raised 32 times in parliament since 2016. Her first constituency question at the start of the 59th parliament in 2018 concerned the need for a new Shepparton stadium, and the topic was again her first constituency question at the start of the 60thparliament in 2022. In the last sitting week of her 24-year parliamentary career, Ms Lovell delivered her final adjournment speech to once more urge the State Government to invest in a new sports and events centre that Shepparton needs and urgently deserves. “Shepparton cannot wait any longer. We need a new stadium that will serve our

children now and long into the future and allow them to keep participating in sports as the city grows,” said Ms Lovell. “We also need a sports and events centre that reflects the city’s growing role as a regional centre for major events, and which attracts national and international tournaments.” The current Shepparton stadium has served the community for decades but no longer has the capacity to meet demand as participation in basketball and other indoor sports grows, while the ageing facility fails to meet safety and accessibility standards. Ms Lovell secured a Liberal election commitment to invest in a new stadium in the 2018 and 2022 elections, but subsequent elected Labor Governments have never matched the commitment. “Labor has persistently failed to fund projects in regional Victoria, with only 12

per cent of infrastructure spending going to regional Victoria under Labor, despite the regions being home to 25 per cent of the population,” said Ms Lovell. The Liberal-National Coalition has pledged to guarantee that 25 per cent of infrastructure investment goes to regional Victoria to deliver projects like the Shepparton stadium if elected.

The new stadium will have four multiuse courts that meet national standards and a show court with seating for up to 3,000 spectators, along function and event spaces, a reception, cafe, new changing rooms, accessible amenities and more carparking. Ms Lovell has called for $12M from the Victorian Government for the project.

MITCHELL: THE GENIUS MAGPIE DESTINED FOR AFL COACHING SEN

Brownlow Medallist Tom Mitchell has named the former teammate he believes is destined for AFL coaching once his playing career comes to an end. Mitchell, who played for three clubs before retiring at the end of the 2025 season, has one of the best footy minds in modern football. From tactical breakdowns with Channel 7 and now, Trade Radio, Mitchell has an understanding for the game that very few could comprehend. However, across his 207-game career at the highest level, Mitchell believes that one man – who played a significant role in his 2023 premiership charge with Collingwood – stands above the rest, boasting one of the game’s great footy brains. “Jeremy Howe,” Mitchell told Trade Radio. “He will be a coach one day if that’s what he wants to go into. “He is so smart, and he is able to break it down into simple terms. He also thinks in an innovative way. “It’s not often as an experienced player you hear, ‘huh, never thought of that’, or you actually learn something. You’re sort of across everything that goes on. “Sometimes he will make a comment or say something and it makes you think, ‘that’s actually pretty smart, I haven’t thought of that before’.” In the twilight of his career, the Magpies veteran could be destined for a role in the coaching box. But before that, Tom Morris wonders whether a last-gasp run out in his home state could be on the cards. “He is 36 years old; he will turn 37 halfway through next year,” Morris said. “I wonder whether there’s a world – and he denied this earlier in the year – whether he becomes a first signing for Tasmania. If he plays one year for Tassie in their first year.

“He is from there, and he said there’s absolutely no way about six months ago. He said he’s only got one year in him, max. “But if he gets through 2027, what an achievement it would be to play one year, even one game for Tassie.”

Mitchell couldn’t agree more. “Play 10 games for the season, set them up behind the ball, be an on-field coach… I think that’s a great call.” Earlier this year, Morris asked the 36-year-old if there’s any possibility of lining up for Tasmania in Round 1

of 2028. He could not have been clearer in his answer. “No chance!” Howe told Seven’s The Agenda Setters. “I won’t be playing in two years’ time, no doubt.

“At the moment, my body feels healthy, but the way I finished last year I was pretty broken up as well. “I don’t like the cliches, because I frown at them, but I am literally just trying to get through the main session tomorrow!”
