Shepparton gears up for autocross showdown By Maddison Howell THE Victorian Club Autocross Series State Championships are set to take place in Shepparton on October 10 after bad weather caused it to be postponed. The Shepparton District Car Club (SDCC) is set to welcome competitors from across Victoria as the region plays host for a round of the autocross series. The event will see a mix of competitors from all age brackets and experience levels take to the local car club tracks to compete for points as the season progresses. SDCC President Justin Aylett discusses the importance this round plays for both the region and the car club. “It’s a pretty good event for the club, it helps get the word out about us while also bringing people into the town, especially since people aren’t really getting out there and spending money anymore, it’s good to show them that there are fun, affordable things to do,” he explained. “Our track is more in the bush and provides a different experience than others in this series. Our spectators can watch on from the clubhouse, the pits and the start track, so there is plenty to see.” SDCC treasurer and events secretary Greg Jaeschke further explains the greater

significance of this day. “We tend to host this state round once a year, which brings in competitors from all over the state.” “We were supposed to host this round a month ago, but it was unfortunately cancelled due to bad weather. Before we had to reschedule this event, we had 42 entries, so we’re hoping to have a similar turnout for the new date,” he explained. The SDCC is run by many generous volunteers who take time out of their weeks to prep the club and track for events like this. “A lot of the members of our club volunteer to help get the track and facilities ready all on their own time after work and on the

weekends, they help out with things like rolling the track and getting the facilities ready for spectators,” Greg said. “Being one of the bigger events for the club, it puts a lot of money into the club, and since a lot of people travel in for this event and stay in local accommodation, it supports businesses in the area, so it’s good for the community.” Motor enthusiasts will be able to head over to the Shepparton District Car Club at 25 Little Road, Mooroopna on October 10 to enjoy free on-track entertainment, making it fun for a family day out. Fishing season opens at Dunyak Moira MERRIGUM'S Dunyak Moira fishing ponds have opened for the 2026-27 season, just in time for the September school holidays. Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) said the site will be open daily throughout the school holiday period, from 8am to 6pm, giving families access to the free community recreational site. The site has a wheel-chair accessible platform and houses two disused water storages that were transformed into catchand-release fishing ponds, home to Murray cod and endangered Southern Pygmy Perch and Southern Purple-Spotted Gudgeon. Since opening in 2023, Dunyak Moira has welcomed thousands of visitors. “Dunyak Moira is a fantastic space to get outdoors, enjoy fishing, picnics and walks, and we’re excited to welcome visitors back,” said GVW general manager service delivery, Daniel

Flanagan. After the school holidays, Dunyak Moira will return to weekend openings, with daylight saving hours of 7am to 8pm applying from October 10. GVW is also looking for local volunteers for the gate roster. Volunteers can choose dates that suit them, with opening and closing taking around 15-20 minutes. The job involves unlocking or locking the gates and completing a simple checklist, with an induction and support provided. Volunteers do not need to be available every weekend, and even occasional help is very welcomed. Dunyak Moira is located at 104-108 Morrissey Street, Merrigum and entry is free. For opening hours, fishing rules, information about volunteering and more about Dunyak Moira, visit watermatters.gvwater.vic.gov.au/ dunyak-moira

Beware hidden costs!

It’s well known that when you decide to do something there is often a cost involved. Moving house, for example, can entail a lot of costs in making the transition from where you are to where you want to be. But what’s sometimes appreciated less is that there can be costs involved in NOT doing something. In NOT making a decision. This can be true whether or not you’ve made a conscious judgment, or haven’t got around to it just yet, or have simply let things drift without making any decision. Whether you like it or not, failing to make a decision is – in itself – still a kind of decision. It means you’ve opted for things as they are. The status quo. That’s not necessarily a problem, if your lack of action is the right thing for you to do - you’ve thought it all through. But what if you haven’t thought things through? If you’re not making a decision simply because you don’t want to think about it – maybe you’re worried about what it will cost to make a change? – then you could be setting yourself up for much more hardship than you can imagine. Because there can be big hidden costs that come from NOT making a decision. This is especially true with our housing choices. The issues can become more pronounced as we – and the homes in which we live – are getting older. What exactly do I mean by that? What are these hidden costs in housing choices? Stay tuned - I‘ll explain fully next week! Find out more: www.sheppvillages.com.au Or call: (03) 5832 0800 Mon to Fri - 9am to 5pm

Multi-million-dollar pledge for neighbourhood houses By Maddison Howell AHEAD of the upcoming election, the Liberals and Nationals have pledged to invest $10M to neighbourhood houses to ensure a vital boost to our community hubs. This four-year commitment is aimed to strengthen Victoria’s neighbourhood houses by providing much needed funds to those that currently receive no state funding, while continuing to support those that do. Under the Nationals candidate for the Shepparton District Shane Sali’s pledge, a $6M growth fund will be set up to ensure neighbourhood houses continue to establish and prosper across Victoria. “Neighbourhood houses have continued to deliver more services with less funding. They are often the first place people turn to for a meal, practical support or a connection to their community,” he said. Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre (MEAC) Manager, Jan Phillips, explains how neighbourhood houses

provide a vital role in shaping our communities. “It’s more than just a community centre, every community deserves a place where people know they belong, for Mooroopna, that place is MEAC.” “The offer for $10 million is certainly welcome and would provide valuable assistance, however, it is significantly less than what the sector needs and what neighbourhood h o u s e s Vi c t o r i a i s seeking,” she said. “While houses such as MEAC receive core funding, we also undertake a significant amount of community work that is not funded. For example, MEAC operates food relief every day, distributing Shane Sali approximately 65,000 kilograms of food each year, as well as providing a meals program.” While this four-year commitment will provide much needed aid to a substantial issue, there is still a lot of work to do to give our neighbourhood houses the help they deserve.

Act now as bushfire season approaches AS SPRING settles in and summer is fast approaching, the warm weather brings with it the very real risk of a bushfire, and now is the time to start preparing your property. The local CFA urges everyone to start thinking ahead and preparing your property for the blistering heat. No stranger to the ever-present dangers of bushfire season, Olinda Fire Brigade member Scott Allison has important advice for landholders preparing for the fire danger period. “Together we clean the gutters, move wood away from the house, cut back the trees that are close by, and make sure any highly flammable materials are in the bottom shed

further away from the house, not the top shed,” Scott said. “Cleaning your gutters is probably sitting at number one too, but on a really hot day, please move your gas bottles!” While it is important to make sure you are prepared, it is also important to know when it is time to leave. “I’m not going to be staying and defending my own house, as I will be out responding with my fire brigade, however, for the last 20 years, leaving the mountain in the morning has always been the plan for my family,” Scott explained. Surrounded by the dense bush within the Dandenong Ranges, each year Scott works

BlazeAid’s Longwood camp is on the move

with his neighbour to conduct safe burning-off activities when the conditions allow. “Our neighbour is a little bit older, so we always help him with his yearly burn-off,” Scott said. “He waits eagerly for ours too so he can come along and put some twigs on. But we generally take it on together and get it done”. The CFA not only aids in supporting and protecting our local communities but also strives to educate the community on preparedness from the get-go. By Maddison Howell FIRE recovery volunteers are moving to a new home at Creightons Creek ahead of the Euroa Show held at the showgrounds where the camp has been based since the Longwood fires. Amid the devastating Longwood fires earlier this year, volunteer run charity BlazeAid has dedicated its fence rebuilding and community outreach services to all members of the community in need of the vital support. With the upcoming Euroa Show set to inhabit the showgrounds, BlazeAid has made the move to a new location at Creightons Creek Hall where their services will continue for the next several months starting Monday, September 28. BlazeAid’s Longwood camp coordinator Deborah Ong explains how imperative their work is to the community and the dire need for more help. “BlazeAid is a charity that comes into rural communities after a natural disaster, whether that is a bushfire, floods or a cyclone and primarily repair and rebuild rural fencing and support the community until that need is gone” she explained.

“We’re the only major fencing charity that operates in Australia, and we currently operate in all states, aside from the Northern Territory, with a large workforce of volunteers ready to respond when a community needs us.” Since 2009, BlazeAid has worked tirelessly to provide vital support to communities ravished by natural disasters, relying heavily on the generosity of the public to lend a helping hand. “Our biggest challenge is having enough volunteers to respond to everyone,” she said. “People need our help and they need it now, and we’d like to get to everyone as quickly as possible. “You’re coming into a community that truly appreciates the work that we provide, and by volunteering you’re doing good for a community that really needs it.” With the impending El Nino set to worsen our already blistering summers, BlazeAid urges everyone to prepare now for fire season and have an action plan in place. Clubhouse construction marks new milestone

LETTERS

CONSTRUCTION has begun on a new clubhouse at Springtree Yarrawonga, following a sod-turning ceremony. The clubhouse is expected to be completed in the second half of 2027 and will provide additional recreational and social facilities for residents. Plans include an indoor heated swimming pool, gym, lounge and dining areas, bar and kitchen, games areas and an outdoor pickleball court.

Springtree Co-CEO David Laing said the clubhouse would provide a central place for residents to meet and take part in activities. The construction follows the recent completion of the community’s bowling green, barbecue area and pavilion. The new facilities are expected to expand the recreational options available to residents as Springtree Yarrawonga continues to develop. For more information or to arrange a tour, visit springtree.com.au or call 1300 200 240.

Letters to the Editor REAL CHANGE HAS A PLAN The vast majority of people I have spoken to across Northern Victoria agree that under Labor, Victoria is headed in the wrong direction. However, it is not good enough to simply highlight the many areas where Victorian Labor has corrupted, and failed Victorians. The real-world consequences of their mismanagement played out recently with the death of a motorcyclist on a pothole in Western Victoria. A Jess Wilson-led Liberal government does not just have a plan to give Victoria a Fresh Start. We have a contract

The Central North Renewable Energy Zone has been scrapped, and common sense has prevailed for the Dookie community. VicGrid had decided that some of Victoria’s most productive farmland was the right place for a renewable energy zone, made up mostly of solar projects. Part of it sits within the East Shepparton irrigation system growing dairy pastures and fruit, and part is Dookie

plains cropping land, where wheat, barley and canola yields run significantly above the national average. Protect Dookie and GV, led by volunteers Jodie Fleming and Hannah Harmer, along with farmers including Chris Ludeman, fought back with report after report. The community never gave up. Renewables have a role to play, but not on our prime agricultural land.

Labor’s changes to the working holiday maker visa will hit our farming communities hard. Year two intake will fall from 57,000 to 45,000, and year three from 31,000 to just 5,000. That is a cut of more than 40% across those two years. Broadacre farmers and harvesting contractors rely on experienced workers who return season after season because

they know the machinery and can be trusted during the busiest weeks of the year. You cannot put inexperienced operators in that equipment. Backpackers have minimal impact on net overseas migration. Targeting them does nothing to fix Labor’s migration failures and only adds pressure on farmers already short of workers.

But protecting Victoria's food supply starts much closer to home. It starts in our backyards, our streets, our parks and the communities that help sustain one of Australia's most productive horticultural regions. The Goulburn Murray Valley (GMV) is known as Victoria's fruit bowl. For generations, local families have built businesses, careers and communities around the production of quality fruit. Our region grows nationally significant volumes of apples, pears, stone fruit, cherries and other fresh produce that end up on kitchen tables across Australia. Protecting that legacy is becoming increasingly challenging. Queensland Fruit Fly (QFly) remains one of the most significant threats facing our region. Recent independent expert analysis identified the GMV as one of Australia's most vulnerable fruit fly regions, largely because of our unique mix of commercial orchards, residential areas and backyard fruit trees. Unlike many other growing regions, our communities and horticultural production exist side by side. The success of our fruit fly program has always been built on community involvement. When the GMV’s high-input Area Wide Management program was fully funded, growers, councils, community groups, volunteers and residents all played a role. Together, those efforts helped reduce fruit fly populations by 95 per cent in the first year and a further 60 per cent in the second year. In Cobram, the integration of Area Wide Management and the Sterile Insect

COLLECTIVE EFFORT... The Goulburn Murray Valley’s horticultural industry is calling for continued investment and community action to manage Queensland Fruit Fly. Pictured is Regional Coordinator, Ross Abberfield. Photo: Supplied

Technique achieved an 83 per cent reduction in fruit fly numbers. Those results were achieved because an entire community worked together. Residents removed unmanaged fruit trees, volunteers supported awareness campaigns, local governments invested in management activities, and industry provided leadership and resources. Communities recognised that fruit fly was not somebody else's problem. It was everyone's problem. That sense of shared responsibility remains just as important today. Since reductions in funding, the program has moved from a high-input model to a lower-input approach. Independent analysis has identified increasing QFly populations and a reduced ability to maintain suppression. In 2024 alone, QFly numbers increased by approximately 90 per cent, while modelling suggests populations could increase by more than 600 per cent if effective management is not maintained. The consequences extend well beyond orchards. Fruit fly affects backyard fruit trees, home gardens, local jobs, regional businesses and the long-term sustainability of communities that depend on horticulture. It threatens the quality and availability of fresh produce while adding costs throughout the food supply chain. In many ways, protecting Victoria's food security begins with protecting the communities that produce its food.

That is why the package being advanced by the GMV Fruit Fly Governance Group is so important. The proposal seeks investment in restoring high-input Area Wide Management, investigating future Sterile Insect Technique capability, and undertaking an independent economic impact assessment to better understand the true cost of Queensland Fruit Fly to growers, communities, regional jobs and Victoria's economy. Together, these initiatives would strengthen on-ground management, explore future innovation and provide governments with the evidence needed to support long-term investment decisions. The evidence shows that success comes when growers, residents, councils and governments work together toward a common goal. We have done it before, and we know it works. Protecting Victoria's food security is not simply about supporting growers. It is about protecting communities, preserving regional jobs, safeguarding our food supply and ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy the benefits of living in one of Australia's great horticultural regions. Because when it comes to Queensland Fruit Fly, we all have a role to play.

IF doctor’s could prescribe a pill that was effective in managing weight, reducing dementia, improving balance, memory and strength, people would be lining up for it! The good news is, such a remedy exists, and as locals from the Shepparton Social Sequence Dance Group know, it is a whole lot of fun.

Dancing offers a range of impressive physical and mental benefits says instructor Gail Cook, who has led classes at the Senior Citizens Centre for several years. There are also social benefits, keeping participants busy on the dance floor and in their

social lives. The group meets for practice every Wednesday, 1-4pm, at the Senior Citizens Centre. They also host concerts the second Sunday of each month. October’s concert is a fundraiser for the ‘I Care for Cancer Care @ GV Health’.

A life on the land, A new chapter at Shepparton FOR nearly 70 years, home for Bobby was measured in hundreds of thousands of acres. Now, at 88 he's swapped that scale for a quieter, closerknit life at Shepparton Gardens.

FROM THE COUNTRY TO COMMUNITY... Bobby spent 45 years working on a 360,000-acre Merino sheep stud before downsizing to Shepparton Gardens, where he has found a new rhythm. Photo: Deanne Jeffers

Bobby spent 45 years on a Merino sheep stud in the Riverina – 360,000 acres, 150,000 sheep. He started out maintaining vehicles and machinery, becoming maintenance manager. Later he moved to a small farm outside Shepparton, before selling up this year and downsizing into Shepparton Gardens. He'd known of the community and met manager Jodie before deciding to make the move. Having not lived in a town since he was 15, the shift to close neighbours and daily meals took some adjusting to at

first - but Bobby has since fully embraced community living. The community has a Men's Shed, a popular meeting spot for residents. Bobby enjoys playing pool every Thursday, and still drives himself into town - only five minutes from the community - where he enjoys walks by the lake and staying active. His advice for those considering downsizing? "Go for it and give it a go - if you don't, you'll never know." And if he could give advice to his younger self: "Enjoy the country while you're there."

A Community of Care & Culture

Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-Operative plays a vital part of the commununity, built on the strength, resilience and traditions of First Nations people. For generations, Rumbalara has been a place of belonging and connection, offering culturally safe support that uplifts and empowers our people. From health, wellbeing and family services, to housing, justice programs, aged and disability care, we ensure that community members receive the support they need in a way that respects their culture and identity.

At the heart of our aged care services is the Rumbalara Elders Facility, a place where our Elders receive high-quality care while remaining connected to culture, community and Country. The facility is more than just a home, it is a place where Elders can share their knowledge, be surrounded by familiar faces, and receive care that honours their individual stories and traditions.

Honouring Our Elders with Quality Care Our dedicated team works every day to provide compassionate, culturally safe care. This includes personal and clinical support, as well as activities that promote wellbeing and connection. A key focus this year has been cultural care planning, ensuring that each Elder’s journey is respected and recorded in a way that reflects their identity and heritage. Our kitchen staff play a crucial role in this care, preparing healthy meals with love and dedication every single day of the year. Even during major upgrades to our kitchen facilities, they ensured that Elders never went without, demonstrating the resilience and commitment that define Rumbalara.

Aged Care Assessment Organisations A small number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations are delivering culturally safe, trauma aware aged care assessments. We can proudly say that we are one of those sites delivering this pilot project, enabling us to better support Elders and older Aboriginal & Torres-Strait Islander people to access aged care services to meet their needs.

Advocating for Change and Better Support At Rumbalara, we understand that quality aged care extends beyond service delivery. We take our advocacy role seriously, working to ensure Aboriginal voices are heard in conversations that shape aged care policy, funding and service design. By championing culturally safe, personcentred approaches and sharing the experiences of our Elders and community, we continue to advocate for systems that better support Aboriginal people to age with dignity, connection and choice.

OUR LOCATIONS

A Legacy of Strength and Longevity The impact of Rumbalara’s care is evident in the lives of our Elders. While the government estimates First Nations life expectancy at 71 years, we proudly support community members who are thriving well beyond this, a testament to the strength of culturally safe and community-driven care. Support at Home Program This program offers opportunities to help community members stay at home as they age. It aims to improve access, secure more appropriate funding, and create a more responsive aged care system. Rumbalara will continue to advocate for a system that promotes self-determination, supports choice, and understands the unique needs of First Nations elders.

Investing in the Future of Aged Care With secured funding of programs like the Elder Care Support Program and a First Nations specific aged care assessment initiative, this enables us to better meet the needs of our community.

Find the Paw-fect Match at the Greater Shepparton Animal Shelter A LOYAL COMPANION... From morning walks to quiet moments at home, pets can bring companionship, routine and plenty of joy to everyday life. Pictured is Boss. For many seniors, welcoming a pet into their life can bring comfort, companionship and a renewed sense of joy. A dog or cat offers more than a friendly face at the end of the day. They become a loyal companion, sharing life's quiet moments and providing unconditional love every step of the way. A Companion Made for You Every pet has their own unique personality. Some people are drawn to the gentle nature of an older animal, while others enjoy the playful energy of a younger companion. Whatever your preference, finding the right match can create a friendship that enriches both your life and theirs. Sharing Life's Everyday Moments The simple routines that come with pet ownership can quickly become the highlights of the day. Whether it's a

morning walk, a gentle game in the garden or relaxing together with a cup of tea and a good book, pets have a way of making ordinary moments feel special. A Bond Built on Love Animals have an incredible ability to connect with people. With every tail wag, nuzzle and contented purr, they remind us of the value of companionship and affection. The bond between a pet and their owner often grows quickly, creating a sense of connection that can last for many years.

Emotional wellbeing Pets offer emotional support, reduce feelings of loneliness, and help create a sense of belonging. Their presence can lift your mood and make each day feel more meaningful. Give love, get love Every animal deserves love. By adopting, you’re giving them a second chance, and gaining a devoted companion. Ready to meet your match? The biggest retirement question isn’t about money

PLANNING FOR LIFE AFTER WORK... A good retirement plan considers not just your finances, but the lifestyle you want to enjoy in the years ahead. Pictured from the MB+M team are client support manager Cassey O’Brien and financial advisors Darcy Morris, Bree Hanslow, Vince Gagliardi, Myles Martin, Greg Luscombe. Photo: Supplied

MOST people spend years asking whether they'll have enough money to retire. Fewer ask an equally important question: What am I retiring to? Q: What are the biggest concerns people have about retirement? A: Money is certainly one of them. But many people also wonder what life will look like once work is no longer part of the routine. Q: What does a successful retirement look like? A: There's no single answer. For some it's travelling or spending more time with family, volunteering, golf, gardening or

simply slowing down. A question worth asking is: What does a great week in retirement look like for me? Q: Is it too late to try something new? A: Not at all. Research suggests only around 23 per cent of people take up something completely new in retirement. Whether it's joining a club, volunteering, learning a skill or revisiting an old hobby, retirement can be a chance to explore new interests and connections.

Q: How can a financial advisor help? A: A good retirement plan is about more than money. Financial advisors help people understand whether they have enough income to support the lifestyle they want, while also helping them plan for the years ahead with confidence. After all, retirement isn't simply about finishing work. It's about having the confidence and freedom to enjoy the next chapter.

If you’d like to talk through your own situation, the local team at MB+M are here to help. 120 Nixon Street, Shepparton | 5821 9177 | mbmozplan@mbmgroup.com.au This column contains general advice only and does not take into account the needs, objectives and situation of any individual. Hearing loss: The signs to look for and what you can do about it HEARING loss often develops gradually, making it easy to miss the early signs. You may find yourself asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to follow conversations in noisy environments, or turning the television volume up more than usual. While these changes may seem minor, untreated hearing loss can affect communication, relationships, confidence, and overall quality of life. TO learn more about hearing health, hearing tests, and modern hearing technology, we spoke with the team at Hearing Australia Shepparton. Q: How do I know if I have hearing loss? A: A common sign of hearing loss is difficulty understanding speech, particularly when there is background noise. You may feel that people are mumbling, frequently ask others to repeat themselves, or feel tired after social situations because listening requires extra concentration. If you've noticed any changes in your hearing, a hearing check is the best place to start. Early action can help you stay connected with family, friends, work, and the activities you enjoy. Q: What happens during a hearing test? A: A hearing test is simple, painless, and usually takes about an hour. You'll listen to a range of sounds through headphones and indicate when you hear them. The results provide a clear picture of your hearing levels and help determine whether support or treatment may be beneficial. Q: Are hearing aids still big and noticeable? A: Not anymore. Modern hearing aids are smaller, more comfortable, and packed with advanced features. Many models are discreet and include Bluetooth connectivity, rechargeable batteries, and automatic adjustments for different listening environments. Most people are pleasantly surprised by how easy they are to wear.

A SIMPLE CHECK... Modern hearing tests and technology can help people understand their hearing and stay connected to the people and activities they enjoy. Pictured from the Hearing Australia Shepparton team are Sarah Cotterill, Terri Ly, Alvaro Rosales, Patrick Tyler, and Clair Haines. Photo: Deanne Jeffers

Q: Will hearing aids help? A: For many people, hearing aids significantly improve communication, make social activities more enjoyable, and reduce the effort required to listen throughout the day. Hearing solutions are tailored to individual needs and lifestyles. Q: How much do they cost? A: There are options to suit a range of budgets. Some Australians may qualify for government-funded services through the Hearing Services Program, while others may receive support through private health insurance. To book a hearing check, contact Hearing Australia Shepparton on 03 5823 7500, visit www.hearing.com.au, or call into 205 Fryers Street, Shepparton. A hearing check today could make a big difference tomorrow.

First Nations assessment service THE Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety highlighted significant barriers faced by older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in accessing safe, culturally appropriate aged care, and the need for greater choice, control and cultural safety. Since then, Rumbalara’s Aged Care Assessment Team has actively participated in the aged care reform process, advocating for a more culturally appropriate pathway for First Nations Elders and greater Community control over how Elders are assessed and supported. This work has led to Rumbalara Aboriginal Cooperative becoming one of only three Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations nationally involved in the First Nations Assessment Pilot. Rumbalara has provided culturally appropriate aged care services for decades, including assessments

and approvals for entry-level supports. Through the Pilot, Rumbalara can now assess and approve higherlevel services, including Support at Home Packages and residential aged care. Previously, Elders relied on mainstream assessment services for these approvals. Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-Operative's First Nations Assessment Service takes a whole-of-life approach, supporting Elders from their initial assessment through to accessing the services they need. By providing a culturally safe pathway through a complex aged care system, Rumbalara is helping ensure Elders remain

A connected way to live well at Springtree over 55s communities LIVING well can start with the everyday things: time to move, places to meet and neighbours to share a conversation with.

Our seniors

have given so much Through your work, your volunteering, your care for others and the knowledge you’ve shared, you have helped shape Nicholls into the community it is today. This Seniors Month, I want to say thank you. Your contributions have strengthened our region, and it is a privilege to represent you in Parliament. I remain committed to advancing the dignity and wellbeing of our ageing population, and to supporting you to live active, connected and independent lives.

At Springtree Cobram and Yarrawonga, homeowners have opportunities to stay active and connected close to home. A catch-up can happen over a coffee, beside the bowling green or during a game of pickleball. There’s room to join in when you feel like it and enjoy your own space when you don’t. Springtree Cobram’s new wellness facilities offer more ways to make wellbeing part of the week. Homeowners have access to an indoor heated pool and gym, as well as the Wini Health app, which offers activities including aqua aerobics and cooking classes. These options make it easier to try something new, build a routine or

spend time with others. At Springtree Yarrawonga, homeowners already enjoy a bowling green, barbecue area and community pavilion. A new clubhouse is under construction and will add an indoor heated pool, gym and more social spaces. The communities’ low-maintenance homes also leave more time for the people and activities that matter. Whether that means travelling, seeing family or simply enjoying a quieter day, homeowners can shape a lifestyle that suits them. ACTIVE TOGETHER... From swimming and fitness to connecting with the community, Aquamoves offers something for people at every stage of their wellbeing journey. Photo: Deanne Jeffers

LONG-TIME Shepparton resident Toni-Marie has faced a number of significant health and physical challenges throughout her life. Despite these obstacles, she has remained committed to staying active and prioritising her wellbeing. Through Aquamoves, Toni-Marie has found the support and encouragement she needed to build her confidence, improve her strength and continue

learning new skills. After joining swimming lessons, she quickly rediscovered her enjoyment of being in the water. With the guidance of

swim instructor Calin, she has continued to develop her swimming ability and confidence. Toni-Marie describes Calin's teaching style as supportive, encouraging and motivating. In May 2025, Toni-Marie also rejoined the Aquamoves gym, where gym instructor Anna designed a personalised fitness program tailored to her goals, abilities and swimming routine. Through

regular reviews and adjustments, Anna ensures the program continues to meet Toni-Marie's needs and supports her ongoing progress. For Toni-Marie, the inclusive environment at Aquamoves is what stands out most. "I really enjoy that when I come to Aquamoves, all ages and abilities are welcome. It feels inclusive."

Removing the roadblocks to regional growth continued from front page “GREATER Shepparton has never been more vital to Victoria’s economy than we are today, because of what we produce, what we export and the further growth potential that’s in this region,” C4GS CEO Linda Nieuwenhuizen said. “That growth is being held back by infrastructure that’s not there, or by the challenges of securing the workforce we need to take on the jobs that we have in the region.” Funding for the Community Connector Program, which has helped about 900 people relocate to Greater Shepparton since 2021, is a key area in boosting workforce attraction, retention and development. Ms Nieuwenhuizen said the region was competing nationally and globally for skilled workers, making liveability an increasingly important factor in attracting and retaining talent. “When you’re the biggest in Australia for oil crush or UHT milk, the pool of people that you can attract for those roles is global, national and regional,” she said. “For them to decide where they relocate to, increasingly liveability is determining that decision.” C4GS is also calling for improvements to the region’s bus network, investment in the TAFE precinct, more land for housing and industrial and commercial development, improved energy and water infrastructure, freight connectivity and road networks. The organisation said these were not simply issues for industry, but important factors in making Greater Shepparton an attractive place

to live and work. “We don’t want that extra obstacle for a regional area that already has chronic workforce shortages and is in direct competition with Ballarat or Geelong or Bendigo,” Ms Nieuwenhuizen said. A more reliable bus network, for example, would benefit not only young people and those without cars, but professionals and families relocating to the region. Blick said transport was often one of the first issues raised by people moving to Greater Shepparton. “There’s not really a bus network. I mean, there is, but you have to actually plan your day around when that bus is going to come,” said Fiona Blick, who oversees the Community Connector Program. “It’s literally one of the first conversations we have.” The Community Connector Program is currently funded by C4GS and a member partner, but has been scaled back to 0.6 of a full-time equivalent position. The organisation is calling for $600,000 in funding across four years to help meet demand. The program has supported people relocating from overseas and interstate, with about 60 per cent of those assisted coming from overseas and 40 per cent from elsewhere in Australia. Blick said the support extended beyond finding employment, with relocation often involving childcare, schools, transport and social activities. “Even people from other parts of Australia relocating to a region, it’s still a challenge,” Ms

A STRONGER FUTURE FOR GREATER SHEPPARTON... The Committee for Greater Shepparton (C4GS) has outlined key priorities for the next State Government, from housing and transport to skills, water and infrastructure. Pictured are C4GS CEO Linda Nieuwenhuizen, FOOTT CEO Andrew Yeoland and C4GS Chair, Leigh Findlay. Photo: Supplied

Nieuwenhuizen said. “A lot of those challenges are common, whether it’s childcare, school, transport or social activities.” C4GS is also highlighting the need for greater housing diversity, particularly for professionals seeking apartment-style or low-maintenance accommodation. Ms Nieuwenhuizen said the region had already lost potential workers because suitable housing was not available. “We need more housing land for housing growth, but we certainly know with many of the people relocating they’re looking for alternative types of housing,” she said. The advocacy document also identifies water as a key challenge for the region’s foodproducing economy, with C4GS calling for support to help communities adapt to changes associated with the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

Ms Nieuwenhuizen said the region needed to ensure its irrigation network remained as efficient and cost-effective as possible for those continuing to farm. “We need significant funding to support that transition, and it needs to be delivered in partnership with communities, not done to the communities,” she said. Underlying the document is the argument that Greater Shepparton’s existing industries are ready to grow, but need public infrastructure and policy settings to keep pace. “We have already existing momentum and intent to invest,” Ms Nieuwenhuizen said. “We just need to get everything else to catch up, and then you immediately unlock that.” C4GS will continue discussing the priorities with election candidates ahead of the November poll and is planning a candidates forum following the close of nominations.

REBUILDING AFTER THE FLOODS... Funding from Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia will help bring a new chapter to the WB Hunter Pavilion, damaged in the 2022 floods and expected to be completed later this year. Photo: Supplied

F U N DI NG of $50,0 0 0 has been awarded for the redevelopment of the WB Hunter Pavilion at Princess Park in Shepparton through the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund. The Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund is a competitive funding process, jointly funded by Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia, which is open to clubs and Local Government Areas in Victoria. Greater Shepparton City Council was successful in their application, which will support the delivery of this major infrastructure project. The contribution complements a further $50,000 investment from AFL Victoria, i n add ition to sig n ificant fi nancial contributions from the local clubs based at Princess Park. Princess Park is home to the Shepparton Yo u t h C lu b U n i t e d C r i c k e t C lu b (SYCUCC) and Shepparton Swans. SYCUCC President Steven Nash said

the funding would help deliver significant benefits for the club and its members. “We're really grateful for this additional funding and excited to see the new pavilion progressing. Since the 2022 floods, it has been challenging operating without permanent clubrooms and facilities,” said Steven. “This pavilion will provide a modern, welcoming home for our players, members and families, while helping encourage greater participation in the sport.” The previous WB Hunter Pavilion and the cricket changerooms were extensively damaged during the October 2022 flood event. Since that time, Council has worked closely with user groups and stakeholders to progress a long-term solution for the site. The developed WB Hunter Pavilion is anticipated to be completed towards the end of this year. For more details on the works, visit Council’s website.

“WHY?”: COONEY QUESTIONS NEALE’S DEPARTURE AFTER THREE-PEAT FLAG SEN

Lachie Neale has confirmed that he has played his final game for Brisbane, with a move to Collingwood fast approaching. However, Adam Cooney and Josh Jenkins can’t quite figure out why anyone would choose to leave the Lions. Saturday’s remarkable Grand Final win over Fremantle made history, handing the Lions their third straight premiership to immortalise Brisbane’s modern-day dynasty. And it might not end there for the Lions. With serious young talent spread across their 23 and reserves, Brisbane’s stocks are extremely well placed going forward, and with so much finals experience behind them, the Lions might not be done just yet. That said, two-time Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale has confirmed his departure from the club after eight seasons and three premierships. After a tumultuous off-season outside of football last year, rumours of Neale’s departure commenced, driven by a desire to shift closer to home and with his contract set to expire at the end of this season. However, rather than heading back to his home state of South Australia, Neale is all but guaranteed to head to Collingwood in the coming weeks. The move has raised some serious questions. “Maybe it is just the circumstance of everything that has happened in his last 12 months,” Cooney told SEN’s Crunch Time. “It has affected his footy and looked to be weighing heavily on him at stages, and even yesterday. “He has become public enemy number one – due to all his own reasons and his own faults.

“Maybe it has just weighed so heavily on him that it has affected his footy. Maybe he had a couple of injuries throughout the year as well, a few niggles that players generally have. “But it looks like when it comes to

those moments, he is still going to be the guy for the next couple of years. “I know he has left for other reasons other than football, but… why? Why would you be leaving the Brisbane Lions now?”

Josh Jenkins echoed the sentiment. “It almost looks like it’s got to the point now that he’s just leaving and it is what it is,” he said. “Everyone is sort of like, righto, you can move on and we can afford to lose

you, and you want to move on. “No one has ever sort of thought… why do you need to leave?” The 33-year-old is expected to sign a three-year, approx. $3 million deal to join the Magpies from 2027.
