A CFA survey has found most Victorians living in bushfire-prone areas understand leaving early is the best way to protect themselves and their

families during a bushfire, but most would wait too long to act.

CFA’s annual post-season bushfire community survey found 88 per cent of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that leaving early was the safest option.

However, 81 per cent indicated they were unlikely to leave until fire was threatening the landscape. Concerningly, 12 per cent indicated they would stay and defend.

NATIONAL PIANO AWARD

SHEPPARTON will soon become the centre of Australian piano when the Riverlinks Eastbank stage hosts the National Piano Award in just four weeks.

From October 5-10, 14 young pianists will compete for more than $75,000 in prize money, with finalists and adjudicators travelling to the region from across Australia and overseas.

The award board and associates, along with a dedicated team of volunteers who have helped keep the biennial event running for almost 35 years, are putting the finishing touches on preparations.More details are expected to be announced closer to the event.

Tickets are on sale now from $10, with week passes also available covering every recital.

Stolen vehicle crashed into change rooms

INVESTIGATION... Police are investigating the crash after the driver fled on foot. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

By Deanne Jeffers POLICE are investigating after a car, believed to have been stolen, crashed into change rooms at Princess Park in Shepparton on September 7.

An eyewitness was walking a dog they are caring for early in the morning when the car passed him driving erratically.

“When I let the dog off the leash, the

driver passed me, gave me the bird and then flattened it,” they said. “I hear this massive bang, tied the dog back up and started running towards the noise and found he had planted the car into the change rooms!”

“As I was getting near to the change rooms, somehow he got out of the car, put his backpack on and started running,” they said.

“I went into the change rooms through the hole he had made to check if anyone else was still in the car.”

It is believed the Peugeot crashed into the change rooms at the reserve on Quinan Parade about 7.15am.

Police said it is believed the vehicle was stolen from a Shepparton property an hour earlier.

The driver fled the scene on foot before police arrived.

By Aaron Cordy WHEN men retire, it can be a rewarding time spent with family and friends and tackling those odd jobs around the house that they never seemed to get around to. For others, it can mean losing a daily routine, friends and work colleagues, and the purpose that has kept them going for most of their lives.

Mooroopna Men’s Shed (MMS) is a place where men of all ages and life experiences can come together, have a cuppa and a chat, a bit of lunch, a yarn, and if you are interested, you can do a bit of community work li ke f u r n it u re restoration a nd assembling bikes for local kids.

“There's a lot of good guys here, and we usually have a good amount on Thursdays, especially around lunchtime. The boys come in and have a chat and sit down and talk,” said MMS member Jonothan Leaver.

“We've heard out in the community that some people are not willing to join because they think they have to assemble bikes, and that they don't want to do that, so they don't come. That's not the case. You can come and just have a cup of coffee if that's all you want to do. You're not required to

do anything in particular.”

Steve Levin who helps make the Myna bird cages that MMS sells, knew he needed something in his life when he retired from Furphy’s, and found it volunteering at Foodshare and at MMS. “Before I finished up, I thought I've got to do this to keep going because I was so busy physically at work, and then to stop suddenly,” said Steven.

“When I did finish up, I did nothing for a couple of months, to say it was a holiday. And then I thought, yep, time to do something. I had the Men’s Shed in the back of my mind and Foodshare. I’m quite taken with doing the cages; it gives me something to do with my hands.”

Mooroopna Men’s Shed does woodwork, metalwork, furniture restoration, bike assembly and repairs for Kmart, day tours, information on Men’s Health, voluntary community projects, guest speakers, Board Games and BBQ’s.

Walk for prems around Shepparton is no furphy

By Aaron Cordy OFTEN, families who have a premature or a sick baby from a regional area get airlifted to Melbourne or another hospital to have their baby, with little or no warning. It’s a scary time for expecting mums who can land at the emergency department with just the clothes on their backs and little in the way of support.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Life’s Little Treasures Foundation (LLTF) provides crucial information, community connection and support to families facing the life-changing experience of having a premature or sick baby. Partnering with the Furphy Foundry to make up Regional Family Support Packs for regional premmie families.

“We're creating support packs for mums so that when they (premmie mums) get to the

other end, apart from just having the clothes they're wearing, they've got a few necessities to get them through the first few days,” said CEO of LLTF Felicia Welstead.

“Things like a toothbrush and toothpaste, some moisturiser and some little things for the baby, just to let them know that there's a community out there that cares about them and what they're going through.”

This year will be the 17th year LLTF holds its Walk for Prems fundraising event. With nine locations across Australia in October, including Victoria Park Lake, Shepparton on Saturday, October 3, from 9am.

“Furphy’s have come on board as a sponsor of our Walk for Prems event. As part of their sponsorship contribution, we've been able to provide these packs to families as well,” said

Felicia.

“Each year, 1 in 7 newborn babies require life-saving care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or Special Care Nursery, and as the costof-living increases, it is growing substantially more difficult for parents to tackle the heavy financial demands of having a baby in a neonatal unit.”

Did you know that there is an Inspector-General of Aged Care?

It’s an interesting and important oversight body created by the Australian Government to provide independent oversight for the aged care system - with the aim of helping to make aged care safer, fairer and more transparent.

And who could argue with that aim?

By its very nature, aged care can be complex and sensitive, with many things to consider to get services delivered properly. There are safety considerations, staffing and skill considerations, cost considerations, and all manner of other dimensions that can get challenging.

It takes commitment and resilience stay on top of it all.

And dare I say it, lots of heart and compassion too, to make sure we never forget that providing aged care services is not just about compliance with the rules but about so much more.

It’s about CARING, and building a positive culture at all times. Being a nice place for people to live!

No organisation is perfect, so it’s important we all stay open to self-criticism. It’s also important to be mindful of what issues might be systemic in nature – ie. not just about one group of people but about how a whole system is set up.

With this in mind, it’s encouraging to know there’s an Inspector-General of Aged Care who can stand back from day-to-day issues and focus on identifying and tackling those bigger-picture issues. This can include giving guidance at times to our industry regulator, known as the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. It’s kind of like having a watchdog for the watchdog!

In the real world it’s easy for gaps to develop between good intentions and the translation of these into practical, workable and cost-effective programs.

There’s still more work to be done in aged care reform - but at Shepparton Villages, as a major regional provider, we’re keen to play our part and pleased to know there’s an independent ‘inspector’ on the block too.

Geoffrey Devine GV Health has launched “Inside ED – Your Emergency Department Explained,” a new multimedia series helping the community understand how emergency care works.

Last year, Shepparton Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) recorded over 43,000 presentations. With demand continuing to grow, GV Health wants patients to feel informed and prepared before they walk through the doors.

The series tackles common questions, with GV Health’s ED team explaining how the department works and why certain decisions are made.

One question the ED team regularly hears is why triage, and not arrival time, determines who is seen first.

“Every patient is assessed fairly, and the sickest patients are treated first,” said Kim Read, Divisional Operations Director, Medicine and Critical Care and Deputy Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, GV Health.

“Our entire ED team is committed to providing safe and compassionate care for everyone who comes through the doors.”

Another common question is: Will I be seen quicker if I arrive at the Emergency Department by ambulance?

MATT CANAVAN IN NICHOLLS It was my absolute pleasure to host Senator the Hon Matt Canavan, Leader of the Nationals, on a two day tour across the Nicholls electorate, from Kilmore to Echuca, Shepparton, Nathalia, Katunga and Tatura.

We heard directly from regional manufacturers, farmers and growers who raised rising energy costs and constrained network capacity as the biggest barrier to investment, expansion and jobs across our region.

BACKING OUR FOOD MANUFACTURERS In Echuca we visited the nation’s largest tomato processing operation, where high energy costs, the loss of irrigation water, competition from imported tomato products and rising regulatory costs are limiting the business’s capacity to invest and expand.

Regional food manufacturers like this process what Nicholls farmers grow and keep the jobs and value here in our community. When energy costs make that harder, it is not just one business that feels it. It is every grower

who supplies them and every family whose job depends on that plant staying competitive.

In Shepparton we toured a fifth generation family manufacturing business established in 1864, still operating its galvanizing and steel fabrication works more than 150 years on. A business that has stayed in one town for five generations is exactly the kind of enterprise governments should be backing, not burdening with higher energy and compliance costs.

GROWERS FEELING THE PRESSURE In Nathalia we visited a stockfeed operation and a meat processing business, where energy reliability and cost were raised as central to whether operations like these can keep expanding and keep employing people

in Nicholls.

Growers across the region are willing to invest in the infrastructure of the future, but they need energy policy that supports them rather than holds them back.

KILMORE’S INFRASTRUCTURE GAP In Kilmore we met with Mitchell Shire Council to discuss the federal infrastructure investment needed to keep pace with the town’s rapid population growth, including the case for funding the John Street link road.

As the Federal Member for Nicholls,

I know Kilmore is already under strain from population growth. The link road is an important first step in easing traffic pressure, and a full bypass remains a priority project as the population continues to grow.

Permit relief for bushfire affected as recovery fund tops $1M

E IG H T mont hs on f rom Ja nua r y ’s Longwood-Berrys Lane Bushfires, the Strathbogie Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) has now surpassed the $1M mark in donations.

Serving as a practical support provider for affected communities, SDRF has been supported by businesses and individuals around the country, and this latest fundraising milestone enables SDRF to launch a series of targeted funding rounds to help those rebuilding.

The first of these, the ‘Housing Rebuild Permit Program’, is now open to fireaffected residents across Strathbogie and Mitchell Shires. As part of the program, eligible applicants can claim a rebate of up to $500 on planning permit applications for the replacement of fire-damaged residence, and up to $300 for permits related to septic tanks.

"The permit application process is understood to be an essential element of the rebuilding journey,” said SDRF community advisory committee member, Don Cook. “Subsidising these fees for people simply wanting to reinstate what’s been lost is a small measure with a big impact.”

The Housing Rebuild Permit Program is the first of several support programs the SDRF plans to introduce in coming weeks, including funding for local volunteer CFA

brigades, working with local schools on initiatives that will ease financial pressure on impacted families, and consulting with the Community Recovery Committees established in Mitchell and Strathbogie Shires to identify priority needs.

Cook said the $1M milestone builds on the fund’s earlier work distributing $2 50,0 0 0 to 170 + i nd iv idua ls a nd households through its Rapid Response Grants, which put money in the hands of affected households to cover immediate expenses within two months of the fires.

“What we know from the Community Recover y Com mit tees, and the conversations they're having with their residents, is that grant and funding support is still vital in enabling them to practically move forward,” Cook said.

“The SDRF hears that loud and clear and is endeavouring to address these needs in tangible ways – albeit marginally in the scheme of the rebuild still to come.”

While reaching a million dollars is no small achievement, the Fund is urging further contributions ahead of the coming fire season to help sustain the rebuild and support the many across the region still doing it tough.

Securing Shepparton’s CBD

More than 120 arrests made

by Shepparton retail theft team “THE overall feedback has been very positive. They're (retailers) very grateful for our operation and the attendance here in the CBD. They're very supportive of the operation and are very pleased that the offending that they've been witnessing for so long is now being actioned, and we're taking action, and we will continue to take action,” said Inspector Parkinson.

“We've been working very closely with our retailers, so the offending or the recording of the amount of offending, probably increased because retailers now feel very comfortable coming to report those incidents to the police, whereas previously they weren't reporting a lot of the offending. So in that regard, we've got a very good working relationship with our retailers now. So yes, the offending has gone up, so have the arrests and the charges.”

According to the latest crime data, retail theft increased by 50 per cent in the year ending March 2026. During Operation Securus, 28 alleged repeat offenders have been caught, with a 41-year-old Mooroopna woman arrested 17 times since the operation commenced.

“That female in particular is currently remanded and is due to face court at a later date. So that prolific offending has been dealt with and will be going before the court,” said Inspector Parkinson.

Operation Securus was established to not only reduce shoplifting offences across Greater Shepparton, but to catch prolific thieves who use aggression and intimidation tactics in an attempt to get away with their crimes.

Operation Securus will continue, with uniform members having a highly visible presence in the CBD and retail precincts.

People power win 11,670 signatures helped renewable fight! continued from front page THE announcement came as a petition bearing 11,760 signatures, calling for the eastern section of the Central North REZ to be removed from the 2025 Victorian Transmission Plan, was debated in Victorian Parliament.

The petition was presented by Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell, who has campaigned against the inclusion of the eastern section.

Protect Dookie & Goulburn Valley spokesperson Jodie Fleming described the decision as a major win for the community.

“So excited to report that we won! The Central North REZ has been completely removed from the renewable energy zone and we couldn’t be happier,” Ms Fleming said on the steps of Parliament.

“That shows you that there is power of the people and it also shows you how important our agricultural land is ... not just to us who live on

the land, but to everyone to feed our nation.”

Ms Fleming said the campaign had been successful because the community had rallied together, with advocacy supported by local, state and federal representatives.

Greater Shepparton City Council had also strongly opposed aspects of the proposed zone, commissioning an independent review

by Sequana which raised concerns about the inclusion of highly productive agricultural land and recommended changes to the proposed boundaries. Council subsequently made a submission to VicGrid calling for greater protection of agricultural land and more targeted consultation with affected landholders.

State MPs Wendy Lovell, Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell and Kim O’Keeffe, Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell and Greater Shepparton councillors had all spoken out about concerns surrounding the proposed zone.

Greater Shepparton Deputy Mayor Geoff Akers said the announcement was a major win

for the community.

“It shows that when communities come together with a clear message, they can influence decisions that affect their future,” he said.

While welcoming the decision, Ms Fleming said the broader debate around renewable energy developments and agricultural land was far from over.

“There are still many other projects around the state that are going ahead, such as battery projects around Glenrowan and other areas,” she said.

“Once agricultural land has been developed for energy projects, the land has been taken and cannot be used for farming.”

The Victorian Farmers Federation also welcomed the decision but warned that other regional communities remained concerned about renewable energy development.

“This is a step in the right direction for the community and a recognition that landholders deserve to have a genuine say in decisions that affect their farms, their livelihoods and the future

of their region,” VFF president Ryan Milgate said.

“While we welcome this decision, it's difficult to celebrate one community being listened to when others feel they were ignored by the same process.”

VicGrid also stressed that the decision does not mean renewable energy development will not occur in the region. Existing, approved and advanced solar and battery projects can continue through planning and connection processes, while landholders retain the right to choose whether to host renewable energy developments.

The Government said the Central North REZ was abandoned partly because technical assessments found limited capacity on the existing grid, with significant renewable generation already operating or progressing in the region.

A renewables rally is scheduled from 12pm to 2pm on Saturday, September 19, at Benalla Showgrounds, protesting large-scale solar and battery developments in the region.

Prepare early this spring and register burnoffs online AS Victorians begin making the most of the warmer conditions and preparing their properties for the fire season, emergency services are encouraging landowners to follow advice and to register burn-offs online.

The quickest and easiest way to register your burn-off is by using the Fire Permits Victoria website: www.firepermits.vic. gov.au/notify While spring is an opportune time for burning-off activities, more than 62 per cent of burn-off registrations in Victoria are still coming through via the phone, which can lead to longer wait times as Triple Zero Victoria call takers focus on higher priority calls.

Triple Zero Victoria’s Chief Operations Officer, Paul Santamaria, encourages the community to take the very simple step of planning ahead and registering their burn-off online during spring.

“When everyone does their bit and registers a burnoff online it reduces unnecessary calls and helps our Triple Zero Emergency call takers to remain available to focus on emergencies and high priority calls,” Paul said.

“If you are planning to burn-off more than two hours from now, registering online will always be the fastest and simplest option.”

If for any reason you need to start your burn-off immediately (within two hours), you can still register by calling 1800 668 511.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan AFSM said to avoid unnecessary callouts for emergency services, residents are urged to register burn-offs on the Fire Permits Victoria website.

“By registering your burn-off online, it allows not only CFA and emergency services, but also the public to understand that the fire is not an emergency,” Jason said.

“Receiving notification allows us to manage the fire risk effectively and avoid placing unnecessary strain on local brigades and Triple Zero (000) call takers.

“So far this year CFA crews have responded to more than 200 escaped burn-offs – so we ask landowners have enough people and water on hand to monitor, contain and extinguish their burn-off safely at all times and only burn-off when conditions are favourable.”

The website allows you to notify emergency services of your burn-off and also check and apply for a permit, if necessary. For

A rare and extraordinary slice of Goulburn Valley League history will unfold at Deakin Reserve this Sunday.

With the Under 18s and Reserves playing ahead of the seniors, depth is not an issue.

The Bears' coaching staff could throw a wildcard into the mix, potentially calling up explosive Under 18 phenom Lincoln Brand to provide youthful energy late in the day.

The primary reason Echuca starts this game as the oddsmakers' choice is their terrifyingly potent, highly versatile forward structure.

The Murray Bombers' offensive system is spearheaded by the formidable Byrne brothers, Hugh and Angus, who pose a massive aerial threat. When combined with

Malik Gordon and Darby Jones, it creates a multi-layered defensive headache.

The responsibility of neutralising this threat falls squarely on the shoulders of the Bears’ backline.

Defenders Bryce Stephenson, Zac Metcalf, Mitch Brett, and Liam Duguid face a monumental task.

There is no Daniel Meek, who broke his leg in the first week of the finals.

They must maintain disciplined structural defence, prevent one-on-one isolations, and consistently spoil the air to limit Echuca's highoctane scoring output. If the Bears are to cause an upset, they will also look to the blistering form of midfielder Luke Smith. Smith has put together a spectacular finals series, single-handedly turning games with his elite clearance work and clinical ball use. He enters the grand final with a genuine opportunity to do something legendary: secure the best-on-ground medal for a third consecutive week in the finals series.

The curtain-raiser matches will serve as a fascinating battle of attrition and depth, particularly with the Murray Bushrangers talent league program playing on the same weekend, altering the available personnel for both clubs. The Reserves Grand Final sees the Echuca Murray Bombers start as heavy favourites to complete a flawless, undefeated season. However, both teams boast significant senior experience running around in secondary colours. The selection table will dictate whether proven performers like Anthony Andronaco or Sam O'Brien get called up to the seniors or stay down to lock in a Reserves flag. The match features Kobyn James, the Reserves league best and fairest medallist and a lethal avenue to goal. Supported by Luke Edwards, who put on a best-on-ground masterclass in the semi-final victory, the Murray Bombers’ engine room will be incredibly tough to stop.

The Under 18 match showcases some of the finest young football talent in regional Victoria, with at least half a dozen players with Talent League experience taking the field.

For the Bears, all eyes will be on Riley Myers, who has terrorised opposition backlines all year and kicked more goals than any other player in the league.

Alongside Myers, local standouts Hunter Howell, Jack Mellington, and the versatile Lincoln Brand give Shepparton a dynamic edge.

Echuca counters with their own youthful brilliance. Max McCarty and the highlytouted Baxter Cowley are the premier players to watch for the Murray Bombers, capable of tearing the game open with their clean skills and high football IQ. Away from the pristine grass of Deakin Reserve, the netball courts will host a spectacular array of high-intensity grand final matchups.

The marquee A-Grade Grand Final features a blockbuster clash between Euroa and Mooroopna. Euroa took the direct path to the grand final after a stellar campaign, hungry to avenge previous seasons of heartbreak.

They face a fierce Mooroopna lineup that has shown elite defensive pressure all year.

Euroa’s club depth is further highlighted by their B-Grade squad booking a grand final ticket, where they face off against Shepparton in a highly anticipated tactical matchup.

NEWCOMBE OR DAY? WHO SHOULD DUNKLEY TAG IN GRAND FINAL QUALIFER? NICHOLAS QUINLAN/SEN

The Lions are through to their fifth straight preliminary final thanks to a 53-point win over the Crows on Saturday night.

It was a domination from start to finish by the reigning back-to-back premiers, who booted five goals in the first three minutes and 10 seconds of the match.

While the Lions started hot, they were helped by their ability to limit Adelaide’s stars.

Throughout the game, Josh Dunkley had the role of shutting down Izak Rankine, which saw the Crows’ superstar limited to just two touches in the first quarter and eight for the first half, seeing his influence curtailed.

With the Lions marching on to a preliminary final clash against Hawthorn, the former Bulldog now faces the likely task of trying to minimise either Will Day or Jai Newcombe.

Between those two, Josh Jenkins believes that Dunkley should go to the latter.

“I’d go to Newcombe straight away,” Jenkins said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“I would take away the one that you’re most certain you can take out.

“Newcombe is going to be in and around the footy; if Newcombe plays a great game, he probably has 10 clearances.

“I reckon Dunkley can take away six, seven or eight of those clearances and make (Josh) Ward do that or make (Connor) Macdonald coming up do that.

“Make someone else have to do that or make Day have to go in there and do that and then he can’t get on the

outside and burst away.”

But for co-host and Dunkley’s manager Liam Pickering, he believes the three-time premiership player should limit Day’s influence.

“I’d go to Day,” he explained.

“I mean, he’d have a great battle with Newcombe. They’re both very similar, tough inside mids.

“Dunks probably (has) the best balance in his game of most of the midfielders in the comp, because he’s so hard, he’s so tough.

“He’s a good size, like he’s 190 centimetres. That’s why I think that Day is that bit of class that Hawthorn gets. “’Cos if Day can get the ball, no

problems, but if he gets the ball and is able to run, it’s a whole different game.

“Newcombe is a really good finals player; he’s a really good big game player, so I think he’s gonna be hard to stop anyway.

“I would take away their class.”

The Lions will look to progress into their fourth straight Grand Final next

Saturday when Brisbane travels south to play Hawthorn in a preliminary final.
