NEW WORLD MAP

The United Nations have finally rectified a massive misconception with the maps of the world, which have incorrectly shown Africa as much smaller than it is.

By 164 votes to one, Member States on Friday endorsed a resolution promoting map projections that more accurately reflect the true size of continents – the culmination of an African-led campaign against the 16th-century Mercator projection, still the most widely used map in the world.

Is it possible to be TOO prepared for things that might go wrong?

I don’t think so.

There’s always value in asking ourselves “What if?” What if there is a fire? What if there is a flood? What if there’s an outbreak of violence nearby? What if power supplies get cut off?

Do I know what to do in such a situation?

At a personal level these are important questions, but they are also important for organisations too.

Any organisation that has responsibility for the welfare of people needs to face up to the possibility of bad things happening. Bad things that might not be of our own making, but nevertheless still have the potential to impact negatively on a lot of people.

The trouble is, none of us ever really want to think about the things that we don’t want to happen!

It’s human nature for most of us to shy away from whatever we fear.

For that very reason, however, well-managed organisations take time out to regularly review how prepared they are to face crises. They put employee teams through simulated crisis scenarios, testing how well their emergency procedures work, and how well everyone understands what they need to do.

At Shepparton Villages we had just such a training session recently with some of our most senior managers, putting them in hypothetical situations and testing what kind of responses they would make.

The good news is that our ‘crisis teams’ came through the exercise very well - complying with relevant rules, regulations, codes of conduct and general good sense in a calm and professional way.

Were they perfect? No, they weren’t.

But you know what? That was alright too, since part of the value of good training is to see what’s working and what could be done better, in a safe and secure environment. Better to learn and fine-tune things now during training than in a real crisis in future!

We must always keep learning and improving.

Road to rescue could enrich your home with a loving pet

By Aaron Cordy SHEPPARTON Animal Rescue and Rehoming (SARR) are desperately seeking dog foster carers to help them save several dogs from the pound. Partnering with SavourLife and Pets Domain this September, SARR have pledged to save dogs from rural pounds through their Road to Rescue initiative.

From September until October 10, every SavourLife product purchase will help save 100 rescue pets through a $25,000 donation for a Freedom Ride from rural pounds to care centres like SARR. “We need foster carers because we're a foster-based model. We don't have a shelter, and we're all volunteers, so we need people to open up their homes. We get lots of donations for food and things,

so we pay for everything-food, vet care, all of that. Someone just needs to open up their home to the animal and have them until adoption,” said Jess from SARR. Rescue animals are some of the most loving and well-natured pets. Having spent time locked up in a pound, rescues crave connection and become loving, loyal pets perfect for families who know how to treat them right.

“People want to do it for a little bit, and then they don't; that's okay. We need to spread the word that there is a huge need in Shepparton, and you can make a big difference in the lives of abandoned animals,” said Jess.

Donating blood is a win-win

By Aaron Cordy MANY people believe that accidents and emergencies are the biggest users of donated blood products, but 34 per cent of donated red cells are used by people with cancer and blood conditions.

Shepparton resident and retired paramedic, Stephan Palmer, began donating blood when he was 18, following the example of his parents, who donated while he was growing up. The nature of his job meant he couldn’t donate as often as he would have liked, but he reached 144 blood donations and countless plasma donations before a heart condition stopped him from donating.

“Mum was a nurse, and she was a

donor, and then Dad was a donor. I got in when I was 18 and just donated from then on. Never thinking I would need it,” said Stephen.

In 2022, Stephen was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia. He is now in remission and relies on a plasmaderived medication called Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) every 8 weeks to boost his immune system. It can take up to 13 plasma donations to make a single vial of some plasma medicines.

World Leukaemia Day was on Friday, September 4, and the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is again facing a shortage.

Stephen, who has been on both sides of the donation chair, urges locals to make a

generous donation today.

“You know that it is such a valuable commodity, and it is free. You generated.

You don't lose anything. It is just a gain.

You know, it's a win-win. I always felt that after giving a unit of blood, so much better, and it actually generates. I don't know whether it's a mind thing or whether it's actual physical, because I always felt better after giving a unit of blood,” said Stephan.

Local CFA members ascend Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb The idea behind the climb came after the September 11 attacks in America, where so many firefighters died in the stairwells trying to rescue people. Inspired by those brave men and women, knowing the pressure and challenges our own brave emergency workers face, the stair climb began to raise funds for charities.

This year's beneficiaries are Lifeline, Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation and 000Foundation, aiming to raise over a million dollars to help them continue.

By Aaron Cordy FIREFIGHTERS and emergency service personnel from across Australia and the globe, including a handful of local CFA firefighters, will descend upon Melbourne to ascend the gruelling 28 Floors of the Crown Metropol for the 13th Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb, raising vital funds for Cancer Research and Crisis Support.

Climbers will battle 28 floors while wearing up to 25kg of turnout gear and breathing apparatus, or similarly weighted operational equipment from their emergency service, as a symbol of the burden of significant health and well-being issues faced by our first responders and their families daily. Some will also be breathing "on air" through a self-contained breathing apparatus, adding an extra level of difficulty to their climb.

FIREARMS AND DRUGS SEIZED Detectives from Cobram Crime Investigation Unit have charged a man following the seizure of handguns, drugs and ammunition from Numurkah and Trafalgar last week.

As part of an ongoing investigation, detectives executed search warrants at a business on Station Street along with a property on Melville Street in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2.

Police seized an array of ammunition, firearms and drugs from the locations including a loaded homemade handgun.

With the assistance from the Critical Incident Response Team, a man was arrested at the Station Street business and taken back to a police station.

Detectives then executed a third search warrant at a property in Centenary Drive, Trafalgar where they located further ammunition.

A 49-year-old Trafalgar man has been charged with multiple offences including prohibited person possess a firearm, prohibited person possess imitation firearm, possess drug of dependence, and possess ammunition He was remanded to appear at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court the following day.

End overdose event shows the humanity behind addiction

By Aaron Cordy FINDINGS released in the Penington Institute’s 2026 Annual Overdose Report Snapshot show that 2,596 Australians died from drug-induced causes in 2024. The highest number on record.

Locally, Primary Care Connect held its annual End Overdose community event on Thursday, August 27, at the South Shepparton Community Centre to mark International Overdose Awareness Day. “Overdose is an issue that affects all communities, including our own.

It affects individuals, families, friends and communities, and every life lost has an impact that reaches well beyond one person,” said PCC Executive Manager Community Services Broni Paine.

Wellways Senior Wellbeing Navigator Peer Joshua Maude at the Mental Health and Wellbeing Local shared his personal experience dealing with addiction.

“My recollection of living with addiction is that I persistently thought that with each major life event, I would stop, I would change. Something would happen that would stop me from doing what I was doing,” said Josh.

“I recall it like driving down a highway, seeing exits come up, and being

like, ‘Oh, I lost my driver's license. I thought I'd take that exit, and that my journey with my experience with substances and drinking would surely I'll take that path and I'll stop.’ And really distinctly, I remember being on that road and seeing in the rear-vision mirror that exit. I just drove straight past it, and I found myself back on the journey that I was on.”

Josh’s story fortunately comes with a happy ending. But many people aren’t so lucky. Of the 2,596 drug-induced deaths in 2024, 2,091 were unintentional, an increase of 15.1 per cent on the previous year. The figures equate to around seven Australians losing their lives to overdose every day.

“Behind every statistic is a person – somebody's family member, friend, colleague or loved one. These aren't simply numbers; they represent lives and communities changed forever,” said Ms Paine.

We are recruiting two Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members to join our Community Advisory Committee which provides advice to the GV Health Board and helps ensure community voices are considered in planning and service improvement.

You do not need healthcare or committee experience. We are looking for people aged 16 years and over with different experiences, ideas and perspectives who want to help improve healthcare for local people.

Committee members are paid a sessional fee for meeting preparation and attendance.

The Committee meets four times each year.

MEMBER for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell and Liberal candidate Steve Brooks have urged the Victorian Government to fund the completion of GV Health's Integrated Cancer Centre (ICC).

The Federal Government has allocated $30M toward the design and to begin construction of the ICC, but so far, the State Government has not provided funding to complete the project.

A fully funded ICC would bring all oncology services under one roof at the Shepparton hospital and has been identified as a top priority for GV Health as it is the only major regional health service without an ICC. Despite spending $2M towards planning for Stage 2 of the GV Health redevelopment, the Victorian Government has been criticised for stalling the second phase of development and claiming the job was complete when

only Stage 1 of the redevelopment has been constructed.

Ms Lovell has recently spoken in parliament calling on the Minister for Health to commit to funding the ICC at GV Health.

“Labor betrayed Shepparotn when the Health Minister reneged on Stage 2 of the GV Health redevelopment, but I never gave up fighting for the Integrated Cancer Centre to bring all oncology services under one roof at the hospital,” she said.

Mr Brooks said it was time the State Government committed to paying its fair share.

“The Federal Government has invested in an Integrated Cancer Centre at Goulburn Valley Health, and now the Victorian Government must do its part and provide the necessary funding to complete the cancer centre,” he said.

Archibald Prize arrives in Shepparton continued from front page SAM Artistic Director Danny Lacy said bringing the Archibald Prize to Shepparton was a major moment for the museum, the region, and art lovers across Victoria.

“We’re honoured to be chosen as the exclusive Victorian venue on the exhibition’s regional tour, and we know our community is equally thrilled to host such a beloved event in our nation’s cultural calendar,” he said.

“People might have seen some of the imagery; they might know who the winner is, but when you actually see the works on the wall, there is a real power to them, like the colour and the scale.

“That’s what I get blown away by, and I think by having conversations with people, people are going ‘Wow, I didn’t think that they would be that big!’”

Mr Lacy is certain the exhibition will offer something for everyone.

“The Archibald Prize is really the biggest brand

name in Australian art. You don’t have to like art or know about art to have heard about the Archibald Prize.

“It’s great that anyone can come in and are drawn to certain works, don’t like other works, but at least they are having a response, at least they are engaging with art, and in a way, there’s no wrong answer,” he said.

“There’s 59 paintings. You might like 20 of them, you might like all of them, or just one, but there’s something that you’re going to like.”

The exhibition features many familiar faces including media personalities and even the governorgeneral, as well as some locally-recognisable personalities with young people from the community submitting their portraits to the Young Archies.

“One of the great things about the Archibald Prize is that running parallel is the Young Archies project ... so at each touring venue, the venue can have their own Young Archies,” Mr Lacy explained.

Birrell hosts Nationals leader on energy and growth tour RISING energy costs and constrained network capacity have been identified by regional manufactures, farmers and growers as the biggest barrier to investment, expansion and jobs during a tour of the electorate with National Party leader, Matt Canavan, hosted by Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell.

The two-day visit brough Senator Canavan to Kilmore, Echuca, Shepparton, Nathalia, Katunga and Tatura, meeting with local businesses and residents to discuss the pressures facing the region.

Exposed to the region’s agriculture and manufacturing sectors, Senator Canavan said insights gained included that high costs, unreliable supply and limited network capacity were preventing businesses from expanding production and creating jobs.

“Australia must lift productivity. Regional businesses should not be held back by energy constraints that are relatively inexpensive to fix,” he said.

In Echuca, they met with Kagome Australia, the nation’s largest tomato processor where high energy costs, the loss of irrigation water, competition from imported tomato products and rising regulatory costs are limiting the businesses’ capacity to invest and expand.

“Regional food manufacturers like Kagome process what our farmers grow and keep the jobs and value here in the region,” said Mr Birrell. “When energy costs make that harder, it is not just one business that feels it. It is every grower who supplies them and every family whose job depends on that plant staying competitive.”

Senator Canavan said the pressures facing Kagome reflected a broader failure of energy policy.

“You cannot have a serious food manufacturing industry in this country without affordable and reliable energy,” he said.

The tour also brought them to Shepparton, where they visited J. Furphy and Sons galvanising and steel fabrication operations, Rex James Stockfeed and Ryan Meat Company in Nathalia and concluded with Pollies in the Pub, an informal community forum, at Tatura’s Middle Hotel.

WITH a little over 80 days until Victorians head to the ballots, the list of candidates for Shepparton District is beginning to take shape.

On Saturday, City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali was endorsed by the Victorian National Part y to be their candidate for Shepparton District. Mr Sali defeated prosecutor and farmer Alexander Lew, who wished him the best with the election campaign.

Mr Sali has taken leave from Council

to campaign for the state election, held November 28, and has declared that he will not receive any Council renumeration for his mayoral role.

One Nation has also announced that Dookie’s Phillip Bryant, a CFA volunteer for more than 30 years with previous experience in the defence force, has been selected as their candidate for Shepparton District.

Local councillor and business owner Steve Threlfall had sought to be endorsed by One Nation but was ultimately unsuccessful. Mr

Threlfall congratulated Mr Bryant on his selection and said he’d continue to represent Shepparton.

As has been announced earlier, Cayla Fin is the Victorian Labor Party’s candidate for Shepparton District and Grace Verney is representing the Victorian Greens Party.

So far, no independent candidates have come forward for Shepparton District, and it is unlikely that the Liberal Party will endorse a candidate in the electorate.

When should you leave during a bushfire?

A CFA survey has found most Victorians living in bushfire-prone areas understand leaving early is the best way to protect themselves and their families during a bushfire, but most would wait too long to act.

CFA’s annual post-season bushfire community survey found 88 per cent of respondents agreed or strong agreed that leaving early was the safest option.

However, 81 per cent indicated they were unlikely to leave until fire was threatening the landscape.

Concerningly, 12 per cent indicated they would stay and defend.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan AFSM said the results showed important bushfire safety messages are reaching communities, but there was still work to do.

“It’s encouraging to see so many Victorians understand that leaving early is the safest way to protect themselves and their family,” Jason said.

“But knowing that leaving early is safest and knowing when to act are two different things. Leaving early means leaving the area before a fire starts, not when you can see flames or smell smoke.

“CFA’s position is clear, do not stay and defend.”

The results also showed 93 per cent of respondents have a bushfire plan, but only 13 per cent have it written down.

“A good plan should cover when you will leave, where you will go and what you will do if your preferred route is no longer safe.

Writing it down and placing it somewhere you can see it can make a huge difference during an emergency.”

Expectations of emergency services also remains high, 63 per cent believed they were likely or very likely to receive assistance from fire trucks to defend their property, while 77 per cent expected emergency services to tell them when to leave.

“During a bushfire, we cannot guarantee a fire truck will be at every property,” Jason said.

“Don’t wait for a fire truck or a verbal warning from firefighters to act. Download the Vic Emergency App, set a watch zone, listen to emergency broadcasters and monitor social media and the CFA website for updates.

“With hot and dry conditions expected across much of Victoria this spring, now is the time to prepare.

“The best way to prepare now is to attend a Get Fire Ready event this October, speak with your local brigade, understand your risk and make sure your plan is ready before a fire starts.

"Last year, we saw 537 brigades directly engage more than 40,000 people about fire safety at Get Fire Ready events. This year we’re hoping to increase that number.”

GV Health apartments a game changer continued from front page LOCATED adjacent to Shepparton Hospital, the threestorey accommodation will provide ideal lodgings for up to 39 workers at a time, including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and other staff.

Minister for Rural and Regional Development Michaela Settle was on site on Tuesday, September 1, to mark the completion.

“It's about making sure that doctors can come, that allied health and nurses have somewhere to stay. It also means that we can open up housing stock for the general community.

So, in the past, GV Health has had housing stock that they use, and now they have them here on site. So, it means there's more houses out there for the general community and great specialists here in town,” said Ms Settle.

A significant construction milestone has been reached, with the completion of the floor slab, verandah slab, and structural steel installation, giving a sense of the scale and presence of the new facility.

The new WB Hunter Pavilion includes change rooms, trainers’ rooms, umpires’ facilities, and amenities that meet AFL,

Netball and Cricket Victoria requirements, a large social room with commercial kitchen and glass frontage views over the oval, a three-metre wide undercover verandah area, along with tiered seating and a grassy mound offering elevated views for spectators.

The new pavilion is built above flood level, ensuring long-term resilience for decades to come after the original WB Hunter Pavilion, built in 1965, was inundated by floodwater in 2022 and deemed unfit for use.

Roof installation and internal framing

are the next phase of development, with the completed project expected to play an integral role in community sport at Princess Park for generations to come.

The $4.5M project is jointly funded by Greater Shepparton City Council, Shepparton Swans Football Netball Club, and the Shepparton Youth Club United Cricket Club.

The project is expected to be completed in early 2027.

Local podcast talking books with authors around the world BOOKS are one of the most magical things in the history of mankind, transporting people around the world from the comfort of their home. One local’s love of books has turned into a YouTube podcast where he talks to authors from around the world about all things books and writing.

Aaron Cordy’s Author Talks was not a plan for the aspiring writer, but something he stumbled into and ran with. It began with online book reviews and remixes on Instagram before he began uploading them to YouTube.

“When I submitted a manuscript to publishers, they all wanted to know my social media handles.

I had Facebook but didn’t really do much with it.

So, I realised that needed to change pretty quick,” said Aaron.

“I got an Insta account and slowly started posting there, not really sure what I was doing.

Then I read this great book and didn’t have anyone to talk to about it, so I recorded my thoughts and uploaded them to Instagram. It was a bit of fun; I thought that’s what I’d do.”

Despite positive feedback from two major publishers, Aaron’s novel wasn’t picked up. So, he continued working on his writing craft and building his social media presence. Uploading the reviews to YouTube, he discovered he could do bigger and better videos and reach a different audience. Then came the Author Talks.

“I was talking to an American writer, Ryan Null, I connect with on Facebook, and I just threw the idea out of recording a Zoom about his Flare Chronicles books for my YouTube channel, and he agreed. It took about a month to organise time, very late at night for me and early for him, then another month after we recorded the talk for me to play with it and upload it to YouTube.

“I dropped the talk in a Facebook group I’m in and didn’t think much about it until another writer, Andrew Johnson, messaged me two days later and asked to be on my YouTube podcast. I realised I kinda had something here.”

Andrew wasn’t the last author interested in being on Aaron’s podcast. He soon had a range of guests from the USA, South Africa, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Canada, Puerto Rico, Uganda, England and Australia. His incredible list of guests include local writer Tracee Spiby (One Hell at a Time), Hazel Edwards (There’s a Hippopotamus on Our Roof Eating Cake, Wasted?), Mette Menzies (The Watervale Ladies' Writing and Firefighting Society), Doug Marcaida (Lineage, Forged in Fire TV series), Sarah Clutton (The Remarkable Truths of Alfie Bains), Stan Nicholls (Orcs) and Ayesha Inoon (Untethered, The Sisters of Serendib) and much more.

being able to shout about the books of writer friends I’ve met at conferences and workshops is such a thrill,” said Aaron.

“To talk, learn more about and share the works of Ayesha Inoon and Stan Nicholls is almost a dream. Stan’s Orc series is literally the reason I write. So much of my life changed when I decided to write a novel instead of just being a book nut.

“I read Ayesha’s Untethered when my life was in a real transition, and it had such an amazing impact on me, not only because it is so beautifully written. The story is about transition, and even though the characters’ experiences are not ones I’ve been through, I read it when my own life

was in transition, and it struck a real chord with me. Meeting her in person and having her on my Podcast was incredible.”

CDS Vic and Foodbank turn empties into full tummies SHEPPARTON residents can turn empty drink containers into meals for those doing it tough, with a CDS Vic container drive at the Shepparton CDS Vic depot to support Foodbank Victoria on Saturday 12 September.

Victorians have donated over 51,000 meals through Foodbank Victoria, thanks to the $26,000 raised midway into the 3-month campaign. Until mid-October, CDS Vic and Foodbank Victoria have partnered to encourage people to donate their refunds to food relief. Every five eligible drink containers can help create one meal for those experiencing food insecurity.

Foodbank Victoria provides food relief

with dignity and choice, supplying food to 27 schools and two charities partners in Greater Shepparton. Foodbank feeds 76,000 Victorians every day and provides more than 70 per cent of the state's food relief. The organisation has seen demand for food relief increase by 10 per cent in the past six months, with cost-of-living pressures continuing to impact many households.

Andrew Yeoland CEO of FOOTT, which operates the Shepparton CDS Vic depot, said the Foodbank and CDS Vic ‘Your Empties, Full Tummies’ container drive provides locals a meaningful way to support those who need it most.

“We know Greater Shepparton is a

Echuca has cut a swathe through the Goulburn Valley League on a second semi-final day to outscore their three football opponents for the day 368 points to 137.

Echuca won the senior football on the back of a 12 goal to four first half, and despite being outscored marginally in the final term won by 68 points.

Their reserve grade team were 19.6 (120) to 7.6 (48) winners against Shepparton Bears, while their Under 18 team had 41 scoring shots (16.25) to beat Benalla by 91 points.

The Murray Bombers now await their opponents for the Sunday, September 20 grand finals in all three football grades – and for good measure – two of the five netball grades.

Echuca’s second semi-final day at Kyabram started with wins in the 17&Under and 15&Under netball competitions.

Their only hiccup on Sunday came in the A grade netball, where they were beaten by 15 goals by Euroa – meaning a preliminary final meeting with Mooroopna at Deakin Reserve on Sunday.

Echuca will face either Shepparton Bears or Kyabram in the senior football, these teams scheduled to do battle in the preliminary final at Deakin Reserve on Sunday. The Bears reserve grade and under 18 teams will also play on preliminary final day, against Benalla in the Under 18 competition and Kyabram in the reserves.

In effect, grand final day (from a football fixture anyway) could be Echuca versus Shepparton Bears in all three grades – if results go the way of the Bears this Sunday.

6 BRISBANE LIONS 6 WESTERN BULLDOGS

Shepparton’s 21 point win against Mooroopna in Saturday’s first semi-final at Seymour came off the back of another Luke Smith master-class.

Smith kicked three goals and was, according to most judges, a clear best afield in a game where the Bears led by 20 points at quarter time and held sway throughout.

This weekend’s preliminary final will pit two of the players shortlisted for the 2026 Morrison Medal against one another – ruckmen Zac Norris and former winner of the award Ash Holland.

There are, in fact, five ruckmen in the running for the award. The count will be held at Tatura’s Ballantyne Centre on Monday, September 14 at 6pm.

Liam Betson from Mooroopna, Benalla’s Mark Marriott and Ryley Ferguson from Rochester are the other three ruckmen in the running for the award. They have been shortlisted alongside Keelin Betson (Mooroopna), Dylan Cook (Seymour), Echuca captain Mitch Wales, Angus Hicks from United and Rochester star Mitch Trewhella.

Kyabram has two big players under a cloud for the preliminary final – Jason Morgan and Brad Whitford both suffering injuries in the loss to Echuca on Sunday.

Shepparton, on the other hand, has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the selection table.

With several of their Murray Bushrangers squad members available this weekend the final line-up for Sunday’s game will be extremely interesting.

Angus Williams came back into the team on Saturday for the win against Mooroopna and kicked two goals. He has kicked 11 goals in his six senior GVL games this season.

In the Under 18 team were Archer Hueston (one senior game (and three goals) this year, Jack Mellington (two senior games), Lincoln Brand (two senior games) and Spencer Sharp (five senior games, including the first round of the finals).

Prediction: Shepp Bears by 31 points.

-Kyabram won its way into a reserve grade preliminary final with a 44 point win against Seymour.

Noah Ryan was best on ground and Jarryd Pertzel kicked three goals in the win, regular senior players Miller Griffiths and Adam Pulsoni among the best players on the ground.

Both will come into consideration as replacements for the senior players who went down in the second semi-final – if indeed they do not recover in time for this Sunday’s game.

These are the players invited to the league medal count from the reserves competition: Kobyn James (Echuca), Brenton Brasier (Ky), Danny Miller (Ky), Christian Toy (Roch), Bailey Boyack (Roch), Charlie Carmichael (Sey), Ben Moylan (Bears), Xavier Lewis (Bears), Kade Thomas (Swans), Deacon Woods (United).

The winner will go home with the Abikhair Medal.

NETBALL Euroa has taken a more direct route than it has in the past three seasons to the grand final, a 15 goal win on the back of 54 goals from goaler Bec Colwell.

Colwell now has 903 goals for the season and in partnership with co-captain Mia Sudomirski have been the stand out goaling combination of the GVL. Echuca will have two players celebrating 300 game milestones at Deakin Reserve on Sunday – two time league medallist Steph Vick and defender Lauren Jones.

They will face off with a Mooroopna team which has as much youth as it does experience – 200 gamer Ash Lancaster fresh off a 41 goal game in the first semi-final win against Seymour and midcourt star Rhani Hendy continuing her great form.

Last time these teams played, in the final round of the home and away season, it was a 37-all draw.

Vick and her mid-court group will come up against 400+ gamer Bree Hanslow to echo just how much experience is in this game.

Vick and a three time winner of the medal (200810-12), Ash Hare, have both been invited to attend Monday evening’s vote count. It could be an exciting start to the week for the Murray Bombers.

A third Echuca player, Sherry Townrow, has also been shortlisted with Mia Sudomirski (Euroa), Alex Ball (Mansfield), Ash Lancaster (Mooroopna), Caitlin McLachlan (Mooroopna), Tia Webb (Rochester), Ally Black (Seymour), Elle Nexhip (Seymour), Gabby Moore (Shepparton Swans), and Elsie Boyer (Tatura).

Nexhip is also a former winner of the award.

Prediction: Echuca by 2 goals.

-This year the league will have two presentation events, Monday evening’s Morrison Medal count (for senior awards) and an event at the Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE) on Saturday, October 3 at 1pm.

This will be a Future Stars presentation event for all unders competitions. These players have been invited for the 17&Under, 15&Under and Under 18 netball and football vote counts.

CORNES: WHY FREMANTLE CAN STILL WIN THE PREMIERSHIP NICHOLAS QUINLAN/SEN

Since the introduction of the final eight system in 2000 and the final ten system this season, only one minor premier (West Coast in 2006) has lost the qualifying final but still lifted the premiership cup on the last Saturday in September.

And with the ladder leading Dockers now forced to go the long way following their shock defeat last Thursday night, Kane Cornes still believes the side is capable of winning it all.

Having amassed 19 wins for the year, which saw the WA-based club sit in top spot throughout the second half of the season, Fremantle were favourites for their qualifying final against Hawthorn, having not lost at Optus Stadium throughout 2026.

But the nerves of Justin Longmuir’s men appeared to get the better of them, with the Hawks pulling off an unexpected 32-point victory, seeing Freo play in a semi-final at home rather than a preliminary final.

While it is not unheard of for top four sides to lose in the first week and bounce back to win it all later in the month, it certainly isn’t the norm with the Lions (2003), Swans (2005), Eagles (2006), Hawks (2015), Tigers (2020) and the Lions again (2025) bucking this trend in the 21st Century.

But with a coach who has been levelheaded throughout the entire season alongside the league’s best defence, the 2004 Premiership player for Port Adelaide is not putting a line through their chances just yet.

said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“I thought they were too safe and too predictable and too easy to play against.

“But I haven’t given up on them, so that’s the other thing.

“I think I’ve got too much respect and faith in them and the way that they’ve played for a long period of time now.

“I think he’s (Justin Longmuir) an exceptional coach; I really do. I

don’t think he rides the wave, which would be easy to do, to ride the ups and downs. He’s been pretty steady, regardless of the winning streak, regardless of disappointing losses.

Same again on Thursday night with his public comments.

“I’ve just got too much confidence in him and this group; there’s gonna be a strong response.

“That doesn’t mean you’re gonna go

the hard way and the long way and win it, but I wouldn’t write them off.

“I still think they can win this premiership by going the long way around. Not easy to do, and this will take a huge effort from everyone to do it, but they’re healthy, they clearly believe in the game style, the game style stacks up, they defend well.

“This isn’t the last we’re gonna see of Fremantle.”

The Dockers will play their last game at Optus Stadium for 2026 when they host Geelong tonight, Friday 11 September, for the semi-final.

The winner will go on to play Sydney in a preliminary final at the SCG.
