‘Just don’t die’, the secret to a long life

By Aaron Cordy THE secret to a long, happy life can be debated until the cows come home. When Lorna Harbor, nee’ Ritchie, says, “Fresh air, sunshine, riding bikes and not sitting around,” with a cheeky grin, it is worth taking notice, because this Friday, August

21, will be Lorna’s 100th birthday.

Lorna is the oldest of three Ritchie girls born and raised in Naring, north of Numurkah, to Bob and Violet Ritchie, on the family farm with sheep, cropping, a Jersey Stud milking herd and thousands of chooks.

Beverley (Sharp), the baby of the family, turned 90 on Tuesday, July 28. And the shy Esme (Slapp) sits somewhere in the middle.

The extraordinary life the sisters have lived seems a little lost on them, given all the incredible changes they have seen over Continued Page 13 the years.

A 64-year-old man of no fixed address has been rescued after becoming trapped by rising floodwater in bushland near Mooroopna on Thursday, August 13.

Police received several calls from the man, who was seeking assistance as water from the Goulburn River quickly rose around him.

Without a specific location, the Air Wing was called in to help locate him in bushland between Shepparton and Mooroopna, south of the Midland Highway.

The man was found on dry land surrounded by floodwater at about 12.30pm. Police, Shepparton Search & Rescue and the SES then worked together to convey him to safer ground. He was rescued and taken into the care of paramedics.

GVL SEARCH FOR GENERAL MANAGER

The GVL is on the hunt for a General Manager, following the AFL’s announcement earlier this year that the AFL Goulburn Murray Regional Administration Centre (RAC) will be phased out.

GVL Chair Peter Foott said considerable planning had already taken place behind the scenes, with the Board working closely alongside AFL Goulburn Murray to ensure a smooth transition.

The new General Manager will oversee what Mr Foott says is one of Australia’s premier country football and netball competitions.

“The Board has invested a significant amount of time planning this transition and ensuring we are well positioned for the future,” said Mr Foott.

Rolling out the reserves to increase police numbers on the street

By Aaron Cordy SHEPPARTON police are getting a much-needed boost to their man hours with 50 former officers being deployed to 26 stations across the state, including eight reservist officers for Shepparton station. They will perform a range of administrative duties to free up serving police so they can have a stronger presence on the street, preventing and detecting crime.

“Our police behind the counter at the moment can actually get back out on the road, keep the community safe, prevent crime, and be out there patrolling. You'll see more visual police out in the community in Greater Shepparton,” said Shepparton Police Area Commander Cameron Sanderson.

“With more police out there, more visible police, crime should go down. But we'll also be able to use police in targeted operations like Operation Securus, where they can target our hotspots like the Shepparton CBD, our issues within Shepparton like the retail crime, any youth issues, family violence, and other local issues that we have here in Shepparton. With extra police out on the road, they can tackle those local issues.”

Victoria Police analysis shows 50 reservists alone will put 1,360 policing hours – the equivalent of 170 shifts – back in the community each week. New reservist Simon Dowling was welcomed by Frank Eyre, the longest-serving reservist formally based in Shepparton, on Wednesday, August 12. Simon is the first of eight reservists to be activated at the

Shepparton station.

“When I saw the role that they were offering and being able to come back and assist the members to get out on the road and yeah, to help the community, thought it was a great opportunity. It was perfect timing, just where I am at the moment, and come back and rejoin the force, which I was more than happy to do,” said reserve officer Simon Dowling.

“I joined the police force as a career, and I made it a career. I enjoyed every day, particularly at Shepp where I spent 29 years behind the counter here in Shepparton,” said former reservist Frank Eyre.

Police have now made over 100 arrests as Operation Securus continues in the Shepparton CBD.

“We're talking Alberts here. It was Albert Day, and then it was Albert William Day was second generation.

Movie star has his day in Shepparton

By Aaron Cordy HE stole the hearts of a generation when he strolled onto screen across Australia as young bad boy, Julian 'Luke' Ross, on A Country Practice, before appearing in films and TV series like Rake, My Brother Jack, Muriel's Wedding, Love and Other Catastrophes, My Year Without Sex and much more. But did you know Matt Day has links to Shepparton?

Matt Day featured on an episode of SBS’s Who Do You Think You Are (WDYTYA) that aired in June this year. Shepparton Heritage Centre treasurer and historian Kristy Rudd appeared alongside the star for a segment to delve into his family connection to the area.

“He was very down to earth, very humble. I had no idea, you know, initially who is Mat Day? I went, ‘Oh, okay, it's an Australian actor’,” said Kristy upon meeting the star for filming.

Alfred Day Senior bought the allotments on the corner of Maude and High Street and established the Criterion Hotel, now the Aussie Hotel. The Day family has links to Graytown, Numurkah and Murchison, which Kristy helped the WDYTYA team uncover. Although not all of that made the cut.

“I did four hours of filming, two different types of takes, and then voiceovers and photographs and moving into different spaces down in the bottom of the Aussie hotel, which I hadn't expected. So here I am in the

middle of winter down in the cellar.

Everything I've told you got said very quickly, but so much was also cut out.

“I think for Greater Shepparton, having those connections with Graytown and Murchison and the Gold Rush coming to Shepparton, it really does show a pattern and a cycle of how those very early families came to this area, and the different skill sets, and the businesses, and the industries that they set up.”

Community backs fundraiser to bring cancer care closer to home continued from front page

THE ‘I Care for Cancer Care @ GV Health’ appeal is raising $5M towards the construction of an ICC at Shepparton Hospital. While Victoria has six designated regional public health services, GV Health remains the only one without an Integrated Cancer Centre.

Supported by daffodils from Renato's Florist, Daffodil Day biscuits from Northend Bakehouse, and metal artist Peter Halliday's Forever Daffodil, the local campaign is one of several fundraising activities backing the appeal.

Over the weekend, GV Health Foundation partnered with one of Shepparton's longestrunning community events, the Campbell's Shepparton Running Festival, to raise funds for the cause.

GV Health Foundation chair Amy De Paola said just over $18,000 had been raised from the running festival, adding to other key fundraising

activities and partnerships working towards the $5M goal.

The Tatura Pedal and Steps event, scheduled for October, has also pledged strong support, continuing its proud tradition of giving back to the community. Shepparton ARB 4x4 is also planning to host a racing e-sim competition during October, giving participants the chance to drive a simulated race car, win prizes, and help bring cancer care under one roof in Shepparton.

"It is really fantastic to see local people donating to the appeal and supporting these fundraising initiatives. Local organisations and businesses have been very supportive, and I think that reflects the importance of this campaign to the wider community — it truly is a campaign that belongs to, and matters to, the community," Amy said.

So far, over $1M has been raised with a large million-dollar donation contributed by the Copulos Family in December 2025.

Construction of Stage 1 of the ICC will begin in 2027, supported by $30M in Federal Government funding. The first stage will expand existing cancer services and improve facilities; however, a fully funded Stage 2 is required to bring all cancer services under one roof, including chemotherapy, radiation oncology, specialist clinics, wellness programs and supportive care.

The Copulos family donation will be doubled to $2M if the Victorian Government commits to

funding the final stage.

Kind regards, Rowan Farren-Parnell Local Parent and Pokémon Judge SMELLING GAS IN ELECTION PROMISES Dear Editor, In response to the article by Steve Brooks on the Liberal Party's thoughts on Victorian gas for regional Victoria (5/8/2026), I'm not at all convinced that the Liberals have a forward thinking policy on how the future will be powered.

Fossil gas is a finite resource, as the decline of the Bass Strait gas fields clearly shows. Which untapped parts of the Victorian geology do the Liberals think still have industrial quantities of gas in them?

Does finding, extracting and distributing this unknown amount of fossil gas come at no cost? Geophysical studies and drilling exploration holes cost tens to hundreds of millions, often for no result.

Fossil gas is one of Australia's largest exports, and yet we give it away at below cost to other countries. Gas companies have charged Australians higher and higher rates for domestic consumption over past decades due to factors like diminishing supply,

more favourable export returns (for east coast gas), needing to fill export contracts at the expense of domestic reserves, and increased demand due to increasing gas users. Increased costs have not been due to Labor's ‘decade-long war on gas’, which if anything has sought to reduce demand on the resource.

A future focused Liberal energy policy would consider cost of future energy more highly than what Steve Brooks is proposing.

Reducing demand on a resource is the best way to put downward price pressure in a commodity. Hoping for an increased supply from the rocks beneath our feet is a very high risk option.

Rather than a ‘mindless march’ away from gas, households can mindfully choose to substantially cut their future energy costs and environmental impact by using electricity. Shrinking domestic gas use would put downward pressure on the diminishing gas supply for those hard to electrify industrial users.

Scrapping the ban on new gas connections is 20th century thinking that clings to old technology that will add to global warming.

A forward-looking energy policy would help the food industry to become more energy productive and economically efficient by embracing new technology.

Solar panels now produce the cheapest energy supply ever developed. Factory and warehouse roofs covered in panels would give food processors greater energy independence and price stability. High temperature energy storage systems now allow 24-hour steam production and high temperature industrial heat pumps can also substitute for most industrial gas heating needs.

Propping up the fossil fuel industry by 'throwing the door open to gas exploration' will waste hundreds of millions of dollars (ultimately claimed from the taxpayer as tax deductions) on diesel fuel intensive field work, leaving a legacy of unproduction drill holes that will ultimately only prove that there was no economically viable gas left in the ground. Just refer to the success rate of recent Otway basin gas exploration.

Come on Liberals, lift your game in the lead up to the November election and come up with some policies that look to the future, not cling to the ‘burn stuff’ mentality of the past. Our grandchildren deserve better.

Tony joined the Army at just 16 as an apprentice carpenter in 1988 and served for almost 30 years, rising from sapper to major.

He received three certificates recognising his service in the International

Coalition Against Terrorism, peace operations in East Timor and the Solomon Islands, and Afghanistan.

Sandee’s family has its own proud history of service, from her great-grandfather’s Military Medal in the First World War to her grandfather’s RAAF service in the Second World War. It was a privilege to recognise their family’s service.

vendors spread across three food courts and unique stalls from different parts of Victoria,” she said.

“We have a lot planned for this market with Father’s Day sales from stall holders as well.

This is a great opportunity for locals to explore gift ideas and find something unique for their dad or special person.”

BEE HOTEL AT CONGUPNA PRIMARY I presented a bee hotel to the Landcare group and grade four students at Congupna Primary School.

The highlight was watching generations come together. Landcare volunteers and kids from kindergarten through to primary school, talking about practical environmentalism.

The students will use the bee hotel to help create habitat for native Australian bees, and it was great to see how well they understood the role bees play in the

health of our eucalypts and native trees.

Landcare is environmentalism at its best and I am co-chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Landcare group. It is community coming together to do practical things for our environment, alongside agriculture, and making sure that knowledge and love of the land gets passed on to the next generation.

If your local Landcare group needs a hand, get involved. It is one of the most rewarding things you can do for Nicholls.

COMMUNITIES across the Goulburn Broken catchment celebrated National Landcare Week recently, recognising the volunteers, farmers, Traditional Owners, community groups and organisations working to protect and enhance our natural environment.

T h is yea r also ma rks t he 40 t h anniversary of Landcare, celebrating four decades of community driven action to care for Australia's land, water, biodiversity and natural resources.

The Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority thanks the thousands of volunteers whose time, knowledge and dedication have helped create healthier landscapes and stronger communities.

The Goulburn Broken catchment has a proud Landcare history and is home to 67 Landcare groups that collectively cover around 66 per cent of the region. These groups bring together people from all walks of life who share a commitment to caring for the land, waterways, native plants and wildlife that make our region unique.

During 2024-25, Landcare groups, networks and volunteers contributed an impressive 39,000 volunteer hours and engaged more than 8,395 members in activities that support healthy landscapes and thriving communities.

Their efforts included revegetation, weed control, fencing, wildlife habitat restoration and more than 100 community events that connected people with nature and each other.

‘Just don’t die’, the secret to a long life continued from front page “I THINK we just took it in our stride. We just went along with things,” said Lorna.

“When you think of all those gadgets, you buy them, you might use them a couple of times, and you've got to stack them somewhere, haven't you? It's like a recipe. You might use it once out of a book, and then you go back to the way you used to make that cake.”

One of the staggering things about Lorna, Esme and Beverley is their independence. The sisters are still living in their own homes and still driving themselves around, fixing their own meals and living the lives they have always lived.

Lorna and Beverley also have active social lives that keep them connected to friends and the community. They visit each other regularly and talk on the phone almost daily,

along with Esme. Most days, the pair are out and about meeting with friends for lunch and coffee.

“I think that might be the secret. Not sitting around looking at four walls,” said Lorna.

Lorna and her husband Frank had four children, who gave her seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

She is an active member of Ladies Probus, and she played golf, bowls and croquet until her knees gave out and she needed a hip operation.

Esme and her husband Gordon had three children, eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Played the violin, piano and bagpipes. She still enjoys attending Country Music events across the region and is a member of the Mixed Probus Club in Numurkah.

Bob and Violet Ritchie both lived well into their 90s, and

their daughters don’t look like slowing down anytime soon.

Lorna and Beverley stayed in the Numurkah area, raising their families and living on the farm. Esme had a wandering heart, living in Sydney for many years before settling back in Shepparton.

While many may look at living to 100 as a remarkable feat, let alone still driving, visiting friends and living a fully independent life, for Lorna it is just her life.

“One of the things is, I haven't lost many marbles. You see them in homes, and they don't know whether they're coming or going. And I'm still really independent. I am an independent person,” said Lorna.

“I saw it on telly or read it or something. They asked a guy about that (the secret to long life), and he said, "Just don't die. And I thought that was good.”

Monichino Wines announces cellar door closing down sale WINE lovers have a limited opportunity to stock up on local wines at significant discounts, with Monichino Wines announcing the closure of its cellar door.

Established in 1962 , the Monichino family has been producing wine in Katunga for 64 years, building a proud reputation for handcrafted wines and traditional winemaking methods.

The winery was founded by Carlo Monichino, who migrated to Australia from Italy in 1949 before establishing the Katunga vineyard. The business remains family-run today, with his son Terry Monichino as chief winemaker, daughter Anne Sergi as managing director, and family members continuing to be involved in the operation.

The closing down sale features discounts of up to 50 per cent off on selected wines, offering customers the chance to stock up on favourites or discover something new.

The winery is also known for its Carlo

Museum fortified wines, continuing the winemaking tradition Carlo established when he first planted the vineyard.

The 50-year-aged muscat and port are a standout amongst the range, which includes more than 27 varieties, ranging from crisp whites and full-bodied reds, to dessert wines and fortifieds.

Visitors can call in for a wine tasting, speak with the friendly cellar door team and explore the wines available as the cellar door prepares to close in October.

Careers and Futures expo set to unite industry and education THE Careers and Futures Expo will be held on Tuesday, August 25 from 3pm to 7pm at GOTAFE's Fryers Street Campus in Shepparton, bringing together employers, educators and industry experts to help people explore study, training and career opportunities.

GOTAFE and Wodonga TAFE, part of Northern Victoria Institute of TAFE (NVITAFE), will both run events for the Careers and Futures Expo, bringing together the scale and shared expertise now on offer across the Goulburn and North-East region.

NVITAFE is partnering with key stakeholders, showcasing how prospective and current students can leverage the pathways and knowledge on offer across the combined footprint to help achieve their study and career goals, meaning attendees can explore both study and employment opportunities.

Start your healthcare journey with GV Health in 2027 ARE you finishing school and considering a future in healthcare, but not quite sure where to start?

Applications for GV Health's 2027 Gap Year Program will open soon, offering local young people the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop practical skills and explore the many career pathways available in healthcare.

The program gives participants the chance to work within a major regional health service while learning alongside experienced clinicians and staff. Gap Year Trainees gain exposure to different areas of healthcare, build confidence in a professional environment and develop skills that can support future study and employment.

For the 2026 cohort, the program has provided valuable insight into the range of roles involved in delivering healthcare.

Participants have gained experience across areas including allied health and administration, while seeing firsthand how different teams work together to provide high-quality patient care.

The program can also help young people discover where their interests lie before committing to further study or choosing a career pathway.

Current Gap Year Trainee Miette Longo said the experience had helped her grow both personally and professionally.

"Working as an Allied Health Assistant has given me valuable hands-on experience and a greater understanding of the different fields within healthcare," Miette said.

FINDING HOME AT GV HEALTH For Radiographer Brianna Smith, choosing where to begin her career was about finding a place where she could continue learning, build her confidence and make a real difference to patients.

Now six months into her role at GV Health, Brianna says returning after her student placement was an easy decision.

“I’ve always wanted to work in allied health, and because I’m from a small town, I knew I wanted to stay in a rural health service,” Brianna said.

“What really stood out to me during placement was the team. The Medical Imaging Department is incredibly close-knit and supportive. It’s a great environment to learn, ask questions and gradually build your independence.”

Working at one of regional Victoria’s largest health services has also given Brianna exposure to a wide range of patients and clinical areas.

“One day I might be working with outpatients, the next in the Emergency

Department, then assisting with trauma cases, CT or oncology imaging. No two days are ever the same,” she said.

“As a new graduate, I was given the opportunity to begin training in Emergency and CT almost straight away, which has been fantastic for developing my skills.”

Brianna said the collaborative culture across GV Health has been one of the highlights of her role.

“Everyone is approachable and willing to help. You work alongside doctors, nurses and other clinicians, and you really feel part of the wider healthcare team.”

Looking back on her first six months, Brianna said working at GV Health has helped her grow both personally and professionally.

“If you’re looking for somewhere to learn, gain hands-on experience and work with a genuinely supportive team, I couldn’t recommend GV Health highly enough.”

What makes the program particularly valuable is its long-term approach. Rather

than offering short-term interventions, Ganbina walks alongside young people t h rou g hout c r it ic a l s t a ge s of t hei r development. From educational scholarships and tutoring to career planning, leadership opportunities, job readiness training and connections to employers, the program addresses barriers that too often prevent young people from reaching their potential.

The impact extends far beyond individual participants. When young people complete school, gain qualifications and secure meaningful employment, the benefits ripple through families, workplaces and the broader community. Ganbina recently held its Career Night, bringing together almost 200 people; encompassing participants, family, community members, industry partners and professionals; to connect, share stories, and explore career pathways across Greater Shepparton and beyond.

The evening was a valuable opportunity for participants to learn from employers and build confidence as they consider their future employment options.

Spotlight on Ganbina Accelerated Learning Program Participants can also engage with Accelerated Learning Programs for Primary and Secondary School levels, providing tailored support for students at all levels, as well as extension opportunities for high achievers seeking to further challenge themselves and reach their full potential.

The Secondary Program is delivered in partnership with Kip McGrath and Shepparton Tutoring Centre, extending knowledge and preparing students for testing, exams and future study pathways.

The Primary Program is an internal program that supports young learners to further develop their confidence and skills to achieve at a high level, encouraging them to extend their learning and knowledge while thriving in a supportive group environment.

IF EUROA WINS -And Rochester wins, the Bombers will not play finals. IF KYABRAM WINS -They will play finals, maybe even rise a spot on the ladder and avoid Seymour in a do or die final PREVIEW A final round Kyabram win will ensure the reigning premier a place in the finals, but if Mooroopna lose to Echuca and the Swans beat Benalla it will improve the Bombers position to fifth.

The Bombers were dominated by the Bears, managing just one major in two of the four quarters. Zac Norris had his colours lowered for probably the first time this year, while three of the Bombers best were from defence – Brad Whitford, Jason Morgan and Cooper Vick.

Euroa struggled to find avenues to goal, with Will Creevey’s three goals a rare highlight.

Ryan Hill put up some massive numbers, as did elder brother Lachie. They will no doubt want to continue that form against the Bombers.

Last time they met: Kyabram won by 126 points Prediction: Kyabram by 36 points.

MANSFIELD (9th) v SHEPP UNITED (8th) IF MANSFIELD WINS -There is no impact on the finals race and they will remain 9th. IF UNITED WINS -By a large margin and Rochester suffers a big loss to the Bears the Demons could finish as the best team outside the top six.

PREVIEW Neither team can make the finals, so pride is the only thing on the line for the Eagles and the Demons.

Interest will lie in whether Zavier Maher can add to what is probably a dozen Morrison Medal votes. He was outstanding in the loss to Echuca, where the Demons were outscored 16 goals to five in the first half.

Mansfield led Mooroopna by 21 points a quarter time of their game, but surrendered the led in the second term and never got it back. Will Kelly and Billy Hogan both kicked four and will test the Demons defence.

Last time they met: Mansfield won by 37 points Prediction: Mansfield by 8 points.

MOOROOPNA (4th) v ECHUCA (2nd) IF MOOROOPNA WINS -They play finals, and will finish 4th is Seymour (as expected) beats Tatura) IF ECHUCA WINS -Mooroopna could drop as far as 7th on the ladder, if the Swans, Kyabram and Rochester all win. That does seem unlikely, given the Tigers face the ladder leading Bears.

PREVIEW Mooroopna is the in form team of the competition and has its destinty in its own hands – win and in, lose and rely on other results going their way to play finals.

Echuca found form last week, 100 point winners against United, but with nothing to gain from playing all its stars this weekend there may be a chance they rest some players.

The Cats will be all in, but a Swans win against Benalla, a Kyabram win against Euroa and a Rochester upset win against the Bears (along with a Cats loss) spells disaster.

Last time they met: Echuca won by 43 points Prediction: Echuca by 14 points.

SHEPP BEARS (1st) v ROCHESTER (7th) IF BEARS WIN -They finish top with one loss and end Rochester’s season, then and there. IF ROCHESTER WINS -They could replace either Kyabram, the Swans or Mooroopna inside the top six. They have a better percentage than the Cats, who (if they beat the Bears) could fall outside the finals with a loss to Echuca.

PREVIEW Rochester star Mitch Cricelli is the talk of the town – 13 goals in two weeks after a year on the sidelines. He returned via the reserves and kicked five in that game to a warning signal to the league.

With their forward line working better and Hugh Hamilton released into the midfield more the Tigers look dangerous. It will all come down to Saturday’s game at Deakin Reserve to decide their future.

Last time they met: Bears won by 53 point Prediction: Rochester by 1 point.

SHEPP SWANS (5th) v BENALLA (11th) IF SWANS WIN -They play finals and might even go to 4th on the ladder. IF BENALLA WINS -Chaos. The Swans could drop to seventh, depending of course if Kyabram and Rochester win.

PREVIEW Linc Sullivan and his Swans don’t know how to give up. Their season, particularly the second half, has been far from perfect but they still sit 5th on the ladder.

They beat a Seymour team that had Riley Mason and Jack Murphy back, taking more marks in their forward 50 through having 11 more inside 50 entries.

Zac Alderton’s physicality in the mid-field has helped, coupled with Quade Johnstone’s aggression, the work of Max Clohesy and the close checking nature of its defence.

Last time they met: The Swans won by just three points

TATURA (12th) v SEYMOUR (3rd) IF TATURA WINS -They break a 50+ game losing streak and Seymour could drop as low as sixth. IF SEYMOUR WINS -The Lions will await the results of three games to see who their opponent in week one of the finals will be – Kyabram, Mooroopna, the Swans or Rochester.

PREVIEW Riley Mason kicked 4 goals from 10 kicks in his return and Jaron Murphy bagged another two goals. They will be honing their skills this weekend to build momentum going into the finals.

Tatura was not disgraced last week by Benalla, losing by just 23 points.
