Petition to stop council letting KidsTown restoration slide

By Aaron Cordy ZIPPING down one of the big slides at KidsTown has been a core memory for locals and visitors since the slides were first installed at the beloved adventure playground. When Council gutted the playground as part of its rehabilitation works before developing a new Master Plan, they removed the slides and flattened the structured mound they sat on, as well as the cow maze.

Disappointed at the state KidsTown has been left in and worried that future generations will not have the same opportunities to explore, climb and create memories as past generations, the Mooroopna Steering Community circulated a petition to install large-scale slides and a maze to replace what was removed.

“Sadly, KidsTown is no longer the pride of the Goulburn Valley. It's no longer the pride of the area. When it was first created by all our amazing community groups, it was known as the biggest free play park in the Southern Hemisphere. Coming here today, it has no feeling, no enjoyment when you look around.

Whereas when it was all built by community for community, it had the love, the passion.

Sadly, Shepparton has lost a really big piece of a tourism space and history,” said local business owner Kara Beggs.

Over 1,300 people signed the petition to help restore the playground to its former glory, which was presented to Council on Monday, July 27.

Some 230 high-ability students from local primary schools had their minds stretched and challenged last week in a series of science workshops designed to inspire.

The High-Ability Student Summit – Empowering Students to Excellence is an initiative of the Shepparton Education Plan, allowing our most inquisitive students to explore the worlds of force, sound, light and heat.

Facilitated by Swinburne University’s Heather Greenwood, and held at the Shepparton Academy of Teaching and Leadership, the week-long summit saw students connect science to familiar experiences.

“They showed great curiosity in being guided in the physical forces that influence everyday life,” Shepparton Education Plan Project Manager Jenni Gibson said.

“It’s all about helping our high-ability students to think deeply, explore boldly and realise their potential as our future innovators and leaders.”

Caring for those who can’t walk home this Homeless Week NATIONAL Homeless Week runs until Sunday, August 9, and the Salvation Army in Shepparton are again at the forefront of promoting awareness of the issue in the area.

Today, Wednesday 5, they are holding Care Day at the Salvation Army Church on the corner of Nixon and Orr Streets, from 10am to 3pm. People experiencing homelessness can receive free treatments from services including haircuts and beard trims, dental checks, mental health check-

ins, and a community nurse providing general health checks.

Attendees will also be treated to a roast lunch as part of the Community Meal program run by the Salvation Army Corps.

Walking Home will once again be held at Victoria Park Lake, on Friday, August 7, beginning at 11am.

GREATER Shepparton City Council is pleased to unveil the new digital Greater Shepparton Sports Hall of Fame (GSSHOF) display, now located at the Shepparton Sports Stadium.

The interactive display replaces the former wall of inductees at Riverlinks, helping preserve the history of the Sports Hall of Fame

while making it easier for residents and visitors to learn about local sporting achievements.

Part of the group who initiated the GSSHOF, Margo Koskelainen OAM was rapt with the digital display.

“The work that the council has done putting it together is excellent, and it's very interesting to read. We have a wealth of sports people in this city, and I'm actually very pleased to know that I'm part of it,” said Margo.

“I think it's wonderful. I would like to think that we can develop it. I think there are other avenues as well within the sports complex up here, and I'm pleased that it's somewhere where it can be cared for.”

Mayor, Cr Shane Sali, joined members of the Greater Shepparton Sports Hall of Fame Advisory Committee to officially unveil the display on Wednesday, July 29.

"The new Hall of Fame display will provide greater visibility and accessibility for residents and visitors to learn about the inspiring stories of local sportspeople who have gone on to represent our region, state and nation across a wide range of sports," Cr Sali said.

The Sports Hall of Fame display features a 43-inch interactive touchscreen, allowing users to browse inductee profiles, learn about their achievements and view footage from previous induction ceremonies.

THE 2026 Furphy Literary Award Junior and Youth Competition winners were announced on Sunday, July 26, with stories and poems from young writers across Greater Shepparton and surrounding regions.

The story tellers competed in four categories: Junior Short Story and Junior Poetry for writers aged 12 years and under, and Youth Short Story and Youth Poetry for writers aged 13 to 17 years.

Sam Furphy, said it was inspiring to see the quality of entries continue to grow each year. “ T h e J u n i o r a n d Yo u t h Competition continues to showcase the incredible talent of young writers across our region,” he said.

Warramunda finalist in national aged care awards KYABRAM’S Warramunda Village has been named a finalist in two categories of the 2026 Ageing Australia National Awards, which will be announced on Aged Care Employee Day, Friday, August 7.

Warramunda Village has been shortlisted in the Project Team category for the delivery of its major internal redevelopment, while its Support at Home Community Care service has been named a finalist in the Innovation Team category.

The Project Team nomination recognises the village's significant redevelopment, which will increase residential capacity from 82 to 100 residents by mid-2027.

Chief Executive Officer John Clark said the

recognition reflected the outstanding work of a team that had delivered a major building project without disrupting the care provided to residents.

"This nomination recognises our entire Warramunda family, not just the members of our Project Control Group or Community Care.

By the time the next stage is completed (June 30, 2027), we will have added 18 rooms, a new allied health facility, entrance and an improved administration area."

Warramunda Village has also announced it will join Kyabram's 150th anniversary celebrations in late October by opening its doors to the community for the first time since COVID.

Tuesday, August 11, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is reminding everyone to check their mailboxes for instructions on how to participate on Census Night.

Most households will receive instructions to complete the Census online, with paper forms available on request for those who prefer them.

Some households will receive a Census paper form in the mail or have one delivered by a Census field officer, but they can still complete their Census online if they prefer. Once you receive your instructions, you can complete your Census before August 11.

In this year’s Census, the ABS expects around 85 per cent of forms to be completed online.

It will take the average household around 30 minutes to complete the form.

1,500 native plants were planted on the day as part of the One Tree Per Child initiative, which has played a key role in improving local biodiversity and engaging young people in environmental action. Over the past decade, more than 200,000 indigenous trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers have been planted across the region through the program.

REPORT CONFIRMS CFA ILL-EQUIPPED TO PROTECT REGIONAL COMMUNITIES

Outgoing State Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe, has condemned the Victorian Government after a new parliamentary inquiry report has confirmed the government’s mismanagement of the CFA and its ability to protect rural and regional communities.

“The Legislative Council’s Environment and Planning Committee’s inquiry into the 2026 summer fires has confirmed what Victorians already know and that’s the government lack of ability to properly manage our CFA brigades and its hardworking volunteers,” said Ms O’Keeffe.

Among the Committee’s findings in its final report included: The number of CFA operational volunteers had fallen by 26 per cent over the past decade, 802 single cab tankers remained in the CFA fleet and would not be fully replaced until 2036, while South Australia has already phased its single cabs out.

Around 650 CFA tankers still carried firefighters in exposed rear seating.

Roadside vegetation management was inconsistent, poorly funded and without clear accountability, leaving fuel loads that hampered evacuation and firefighting.

Taken with pick 27 in the 2023 AFL Draft, Oscar has had to bide his time in the SANFL, where he has averaged 19.6 disposals at 94 per cent efficiency this season.

The lack of con su lt at ion h as angered residents and the King Street businesses who will be most affected by the school. A sign on the site and registered letters, which most received after the proposal was approved, were the only warning of the new school.

Owner of Sister Studio on Kings Street, Laura Ross, is worried about her clients being able to find parking and school parents taking the limited spots available when the school opens.

“I’m not happy with the decision. People come here because of the free parking, but with the new school there's nowhere to park. It's always been like that. It's hard enough to be a business owner without

having that sort of stuff going on,” said Laura.

Several residents submitted concerns about the proposed school, citing traffic and parking as the top of the list of issues, which have fallen on deaf ears.

Greater Shepparton City Council also seems to be kept out of the loop in the planning process, which has no set opening date.

“It seems to go through unannounced to councillors some of t he s e t h i ng s , and then we get the blame for it.

We haven't had a part of the process here. It's just over ou r heads,” said M c E w e n Wa r d councillor, Cr Steven Threlfall.

“So next time you think about coming to council, for sure, come to cou nci l or your councillor Cr Steven Threlfall and raise the alarm and do what you've got to do, that's what we're here for. But the other end of the stick is, we don't see some of these things coming.” Council was consulted, which was highlighted at point 31 in the delegate report from the State Government’s Department of Transport and Planning.

“Notice of the application was given to Greater Shepparton City Council. Council responded on 3 June 2026 advising that the Planning Department had no comments to make on the application,” stated the report.

As of writing, there is no outline for enrolments and opening the school.

Shoppers inject $4.4M into local businesses through GMCU Giveaway continued from front page WHILE Kelsey claimed the major prize, she was one of 58 winners recognised throughout the campaign. Every week, shoppers from across the region received surprise phone calls after their everyday purchases turned into $250 Visa debit cards simply by supporting local businesses.

The Giveaway generated 60,636 total entries, with many shoppers taking advantage of doubling their chances through almost 6,000 bonus entries by signing up to The Adviser’s mailing list.

Across all eligible entries, shoppers spent more than $4.4 million at participating businesses.

Among the 140 participating businesses, SPC Factory Sales recorded the highest number of entries, with 2,734 receipts uploaded during the campaign, this is excluding bonus entires.

In addition to driving millions in spending at local stores, the $25,000 in prizes will also be spent in the local community, reinforcing the Giveaway’s goal of keeping money circulating through the region.

The campaign also rewarded participating businesses.

Long-time supporter Cafe Three620 was announced asone of the winners of the Business Grand Prize, recognising its ongoing involvement in the Giveaway and commitment to encouraging locals to shop locally.

Speciality Trees Managing Director Hamish Mitchell said the donation was a practical way to support the local community.

"Donating 1,000 trees to our regional community represents a sizeable portion of our own 2026 bareroot supply. We wanted to help the community in a practical way and we felt this was the best way to do that," he said.

Although the Benalla nursery escaped the fires, Mr Mitchell said the devastation across neighbouring communities was impossible to ignore.

"It's all about growing again and growing better together," he said.

No stranger to natural disasters itself,

Speciality Trees experienced the effects of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires before a devastating hailstorm 12 months later destroyed around 80 per cent of its tree stock.

Mr Mitchell said replanting was an important part of community recovery.

"When our environment is impacted and livelihoods are affected, replanting trees, like rebuilding structures, helps to knit the environment together and keep community connected both physically and mentally," he said.

Eligible Longwood residents will be able to collect donated bundles of five fire-resistant deciduous bareroot trees by identifying themselves to staff. Trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while stocks last.

For gardeners, landscapers and property owners, the annual clearance remains the main attraction. Held just once a year, the sale provides access to surplus nursery stock at genuine clearance prices, with knowledgeable staff on hand to provide expert advice on tree selection, planting and care.

The event takes place at 1317 Mansfield Road, Benalla, with gates open 8am to 4pm on Friday, August 14, and Saturday, August 15, and 8am to 12pm on Sunday, August 16.

Tyrrell weighs in on Labor spill ONE Nation Member for Northern Victoria Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell claims the removal of Premier Jacinta Allan is just panicked emergency microsurgery to attach a new head to the same snake that has neglected the state’s regions.

Ms Tyrrell said “no amount of deck chair reshuffling by Labor will avoid its destiny with defeat” in the November election.

“Jacinta Allan’s fate won’t be changing that of her party’s as One Nation support grows to be more popular than either of the so-called ‘major parties,” Ms Tyrrell said.

“In particular the whisper of Northern Victoria has grown to a roar, but Labor remains tone deaf in hearing of the legitimate complaints about our region’s appalling neglect.”

She said Allan’s replacement Ben Carroll can do nothing to wipe the painful memories of a state left reeling by the trauma of the Dan Andrews’ COVID legacy, corruption and the ongoing destruction of the state’s debt riddled economy.

“Carroll sat at the same cabinet table that created this awful

mess for 11 years, voting for every tax, every budget blowout, and every Melbourne mega-project that starved our regions,” said Ms Tyrrell.

Ms Tyrrell said Carroll’s elevation was not renewal but a case of factional survival, warning him that Northern Victorians had memories much longer than a list of reasons why the region and many others outside Melbourne suffered under Jacinta Allan’s doomed leadership.

Ms Tyrrell has also criticised Labor’s work-from-home legislation. The Equal Opportunity Amendment (Work from Home) Bill 2026 would enshrine a right to work from home two days a week where it can be reasonably done.

She said the legislation comes at a time when businesses and Victorians can least afford it.

“When the cost of lost business is passed onto families struggling to buy groceries, Ben Carroll’s solution is to give public servants and private sector workers a legal right to stay home two days a

week,” she said.

Ms Tyrrell, who has recently been announced as One Nation’s first candidate in the Victorian election, said the party has always been uncompromising in rejecting work from home policies.

“Businesses must be free to decide their own operational models, based on industry, clientele, and staffing needs,” she said. “Forcing a one-size-fits-all, city-centric policy will cripple businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises who rely on flexibility to survive.”

“One Nation wants to protect the livelihoods of these hard workers at CBD cafes, retailers and service businesses who depend on office workers as customers.” She also highlighted that the WFH legislation left questions of work place safety unanswered.

“Who is liable when a worker trips over a dog lead, burns themselves making coffee, or develops a chronic back injury from a cheap dining chair in their lounge room? Who pays?”

Friday this week – 7 August - is a special day for people who work in aged care. It’s Aged Care Employee Day. At Shepparton Villages we like to make a bit of noise about this day because it’s the only one in the calendar set aside specifically for ALL of the different kinds of people who work in aged care – from nurses to personal care workers, from lifestyle and leisure teams to maintenance and gardening teams, from kitchen and catering staff to backoffice admin and support teams – and plenty of others too.

Across our three campuses, in every corner of our organisation, they show up for people at the moments that matter most. When a resident wakes at 3am and needs reassurance, not just care.

When there’s a birthday nobody else remembers.

When there’s a hand that needs holding and no one else can be in the room, and when the opportunity presents itself for a joke that can turn a hard morning into a good one.

Our staff are there for the quiet, unglamorous work: the paperwork, the compliance, the rosters, the meal service, the assessments, the dressing changes and all the things that nobody sees but that help every one of our residents day in, day out, 365 days a year.

Aged care is, at its heart, a profession of care, service and presence. It’s choosing, every shift, to be fully with another person in a season of their life that is often difficult, sometimes frightening, and always deserving of care.

This year, as in earlier years, we’re doing a number of things to acknowledge the contributions of our team members at Shepparton Villages, including giving a small gift to each employee as a token of appreciation on Aged Care Employee Day. Honouring the heart of Aged Care AGED CARE EMPLOYEE DAY... Held annually, Friday, August 7, marks Aged Care Employee Day, honouring the more than 450,000 aged care workers across Australia who support older Australians every day. Photo: Supplied THIS Friday, August 7, is Aged Care Employee Day, a special day honouring the more than 450,000 aged care workers across Australia – including but not limited to nurses, personal care workers, allied health staff, chefs, cleaners, and volunteers – who support older Australians.

Currently, approximately 1.3 million Australians receive aged care services across the country. In Greater Shepparton, 53 per cent of the local population is aged over 70, and 16 per cent report

needing help in their day-to-day lives due to disability, according to Greater Sheppar ton City Council’s ‘Positive Ageing Strategy 2023.

This annual celebration in an oppor tunity for communities, organisations and individuals across Australia to say thank you for caring, and to recognise the dedicated and compassionate people who support older Australians. Aged Care Employee Day also shines a spotlight on the incredible hard work happening every day across

By Steve Brooks, Liberal candidate for Northern Victoria Region REGIONAL Victoria’s continued access to gas means a lot more to our region than simply warming our homes at affordable prices. Much of our Northern Victorian food manufacturing industry and light industrial processing requires gas for processing. Whether it is large scale food manufacturing, or processing of milk powder, Northern Victoria punches above its weight.

The gas used by our local industry is used to process locally produced food for consumers both in Australia and overseas.

Ask any chef, or industrial processor, but in many cases, gas must be used in preference to elec t rification due to the hig her temperatures achievable with gas.

The Victorian Labor Party has waged a decade-long war on gas, which has contributed to gas prices increasing 60-70 per cent in the last 10 years. Labor has pushed households and industry away from gas to electrification in the middle of a housing crisis rather than allowing households and businesses to choose how they heat their homes or run their businesses. This mindless march away from a key natural resource will leave our industry sent overseas, our small businesses poorer, our houses colder, and all of us worse off.

If the Liberal Party wins government in November, we will scrap the ban on gas connections for new builds in Victoria.

Furthermore, we will unlock new Victorian gas supply, taking action within the first 60 days of taking government. We will do this by inviting the gas industry to propose new gas projects, cut regulatory tape, and insist on domestic usage of gas, rather than it being exported.

A Jess Wilson Liberal Government will throw the door open to gas exploration in our State and has committed to an Energy Security Requirement, which will facilitate new projects meeting energy reliability and security thresholds, based on similar schemes in New South Wales and South Australia.

The Liberal Party of Victoria is calling time on the government tying industry up with new rules, new regulations and not allowing us to utilise the resources needed for industry to thrive.

Having our own food manufacturing industry supported by sensible gas policy is a critical national asset which should not be taken for granted. The Victorian Liberal party will back our industrial food processors and manufacturers with a gas policy that is sensible, and gives them freedom to run their businesses whilst allowing households to utilise Victorian gas at lower prices.

previews R16 SPLIT ROUND Mooroopna (7th) v Euroa (10th) Euroa has won its past three games and beaten the Cats in each of their last three meetings. Earlier this year, only four points separated the teams when the Magpies broke a six-game losing streak to start the season with a surprise 63-59 win.

Cohen Paul didn't play in that game, but he comes into this weekend's match with 15 goals from his past three games after his team claimed victories in Rivalry Round clashes against Mansfield, Benalla and Seymour.

Mooroopna has won four of its past six games and lost the other two by a combined total of just 10 points. The Cats lost to the Bears by only two points and, despite not having kicked 100 points since a 70-point win against Tatura in Round 2, are, like Euroa, one of the competition's form teams.

With the Betson brothers, Liam and Keelin, leading the charge, I expect the Cats to stay in finals contention by beating the Magpies. I have, however, written the Magpies off once recently and won't be making that mistake again.

It would not surprise me if Lachie Hill had 40 touches, Jett Trotter had 25 and kicked two goals, and Paul kicked another bag to continue Euroa's strong form.

That said, Mooroopna by 11 points.

In A-grade netball, this is the second-versusthird clash and, while neither team can lose its top-three ranking, the Cats will be aiming to improve on their 40-goal win from last week.

Euroa is the best-performing attacking team in the GVL, while the Cats' defence of Dayna Williams and Caitlin McLachlan is rightly considered one of the premier defensive combinations in the league.

Mansfield (9th) v Kyabram (4th) As mentioned earlier, there could be dire consequences for the Bombers if they lose this game and the teams below them, specifically Rochester and Mooroopna, win.

The Bombers would slip to sixth on the ladder if that occurred and be teetering on the edge of missing the finals as they attempt to defend their title. That said, they are coming off arguably their best win of the season against Echuca a fortnight ago.

The Bombers beat the Eagles by 100 points when they met in Round 7, with Charlie Barnett kicking five goals, Anthony Depasquale three and Riley Ironside three. Since then, Barnett has kicked only nine goals in eight games, while Depasquale has been playing regularly in the VFL for Werribee.

A case for a Mansfield win can be built given the Eagles, again depending on other

results, could close the gap to the top six to just two premiership points with a victory.

If Shepp Swans beat Rochester, Euroa beat Mooroopna and the Eagles topple Kyabram, Mansfield would sit only two points behind the Bombers, Cats, Demons and Tigers with two rounds remaining.

If this scenario were to occur, just four premiership points would separate the fourthranked team from the ninth-ranked team.

Billy Hogan is key to the Eagles' fortunes, returning to form with four goals in Round 15 after having kicked just six goals in the six games preceding the narrow loss to Seymour.

For mine, it's Kyabram by 14 points.

Shepp Swans (8th) v Rochester (6th) Without repeating the above, this match could see the Shepp Swans rise into the top six or the Tigers fall to ninth, depending on results elsewhere.

Rochester looks set to have Marty Hore, the former Melbourne AFL defender, in the team for the first time this year. He will train this week but appears fully recovered from his second ACL injury and ready to take the field.

The Tigers could also regain goalkicker Hugh Hamilton and spring-heeled Mitch Cricelli, who hasn't played since Round 5 last year, depending on how they get through training this week.

Cricelli kicked five goals two weeks ago in a reserve-grade game and appears on track for a return to senior football.

The Shepp Swans are the hardesttackling team in the competition. They are well organised by coach Linc Sullivan and, despite their current ranking, have consistently performed at a high level against teams around them on the ladder.

If James Auld can break free of Matt Kellett and the Swans can penetrate a defence that includes Ryan O'Keefe, Dylan Gordon and Hore, they may well be able to force their way back into the top four.

I think, though, the return of Hore and Hamilton, and maybe even Cricelli, will spark the Tigers' continued charge and keep them inside the top six.

Tigers by 21 points.

Netball predictions In the remaining netball games, I think Kyabram will challenge Mansfield for the first half, but with finals on the line the Eagles will be able to add a little percentage and win by 41 goals.

I also think the Tigers will challenge the Swans in netball, but, like Mansfield, there remains a faint hope of the Swans making finals, and that should inspire them to an 11-goal victory.
